I must admit...it's weird to have the tournaments completed...it's taken a long time.
Fun ride though. Now on to the future of the FBA. GH |

I've really enjoyed following along. It will be interesting now to see who will become dominant champions, go on to unify titles etc, and those who will lose their first defense and perhaps fall of the radar [in some cases]
All the best, and keep up the good work. Ian. |

I have to do the December WBO bouts, then figure out who is eligible to move into the big three, then do that draft. Then I'll be adding new guys to the WBO ranks as well. So a lot of housekeeping to do before moving into "2005". But with that move, I will also be moving to the new game, which I'm looking forward to. So it should be a fun new time for the FBA. GH |

WBO Fighters Moving Up
Well, the negotiations are complete and the WBA - with its vast financial resources - has snatched up the overwhelming majority of eligible WBO talent. This should make for a fantastic year ahead, and one in which the WBA really establishes itself as the top organization. Just looking at those joining the heavyweight ranks, you can tell the WBA is going to hold a number of exciting bouts this year. The WBC signed only 3 fighters, and the IBF signed only 4, while the WBA signed more than 25.
Here's a look at the contract pickups, sorted by weight class. Heavyweight Lennox Lewis - WBA John Ruiz - WBA Bert Cooper - IBF Earnie Shavers - WBA Axel Schulz - WBA Gerry Cooney - WBA Cruiserweight Piet Crous - unsigned Light-Heavyweight Crawford Ashley - IBF Drake Thadzi - WBA Ritchie Kates - WBA Middleweight Segundo Mercado - IBF Maselino Masoe - WBA Jr. Middleweight Buster Drayton - WBA Sam Garr - WBA Wayne Harris - unsigned Carlos Bojorquez - WBA Eckhard Dagge - unsigned Welterweight Mark Breland - unsigned John H. Stracey - WBA Pipino Cuevas - WBA Jr. Welterweight Allan Vester - WBC Perico Fernandez - unsigned Terron Millett - WBA Johnny Bumphus - WBA Akinobu Hiranaka - unsigned Lightweight Jean Baptist-Mendy - unsigned Arturo Pineda -unsigned Mando Ramos - WBA Moises Pedroza - WBA Jim Watt - WBA Roberto Elizondo - WBA Victor Hugo Paz - WBA Jr. Lightweight Bazooka Limon - WBA Featherweight Davey Kotey - WBA Bones Adams - WBA Jackie Gunguluuza - - unsigned Cesar Soto - WBA Vuyani Bungu - unsigned Jr. Featherweight Samart Payakaroon - WBC Kiyoshi Hatanaka - IBF Bantamweight Kaokor Galaxy - unsigned Jr. Bantamweight Chartchai Sasakul - WBA Adonis Rivas - WBA Flyweight Yuri Arbachakov - WBA Netrnoi Vorasingh - unsigned Rolando Pascua - WBA Yukito Tamakuma - WBC Pedro Flores - unsigned Soo-Chun Kwon - unsigned GH |

Up next, determining the fighters to add to the WBO. The FBA started, as you know, with guys who have fought for WBA, WBC or IBF belts since 1970. We're going to move back to 1968, as well as add guys who have fought for belts since the FBA was created. A list will be coming hopefully later this evening.

January Title Fights
WBA Jr. Middleweight: Mike McCallum (CHAMP) vs Gianfranco Rosi WBA Featherweight: Salvador Sanchez (CHAMP) vs Antonio Cermeno WBA Flyweight: Ricardo Lopez (CHAMP) vs Pongsoklek Wonjongkam WBC Flyweight: Miguel Canto (CHAMP) vs Melchor Cobb Castro IBF Heavyweight: Mike Tyson (CHAMP) vs Ernie Terrell IBF Light-Heavyweight: Virgil Hill (CHAMP) vs Clinton Woods IBF Welterweight: Wilfred Benitez (CHAMP) vs Bruce Finch Lopez fought Wongjongkam in the quarterfinals of the tournament, stopping him by TKO in the 6th round. While the victory wasn't a shock, the ease of it and the way Lopez was able to batter Wongjongkam from the start was surprising. It's very interesting that Lopez would choose this as his first defense. Hill obliterated Woods in a first-round technical knockout in the tournament quarterfinal. Woods was livid at the stoppage, which came when he hadn't even been dropped and with only 9 seconds left in the round. Hill, apparently, tired of his complaining. Benitez took an easy, unanimous decision over Finch in their opening bout of the tournament. Finch was gutty, and he kept the fight interesting if not competitive just with his heart. He's a good fighter for Benitez to look good against and beat. GH |

From here on in, I will probably just be writing up Title Fights and posting straightforward results for everything else. I may make exceptions for fights to determine #1 contender/title shots and such, but I certainly don't think every fight in the FBA needs to be written up now that the tournaments are complete.

January Title Fight Recaps
IBF Light-Heavyweight: Champion Virgil Hill (4-0, 1 KO) vs Clinton Woods (3-1, 1 KO) Hill pummeled Woods in their first bout, leading to a first round stoppage. Woods has won both of his fights since then, and hoped to prove the stoppage in their first encounter was too quick. He may not have proven that, but he certainly came to give a better effort this time around. Through 7 rounds, Woods was ahead on 2 of 3 cards, having pressed the action and handled Hill's jab significantly better than in their opening encounter. But Hill dropped Woods in the 8th, and the steam seemed to leave him from that point on. He wouldn't go down again, but in the end Hill would win a unanimous decision victory to retain his title. Virgil Hill UD 15 Clinton Woods (147-137, 144-140, 143-141) WBA Flyweight: Champion Ricardo Lopez (4-0, 2 KO) vs Pongsaklek Wongjongkam (1-1) Many were stunned this was Lopez's first defense, as Wongjongkam is thought to be a tough customer. But Lopez stopped him in 6 the first time, and figured he could do so again. Wongjongkam never found a rythym in the first contest. This time, he let his hands go a lot more freely, and Lopez was eating a lot more leather than the first time out. The fourth round saw Wongjongkam batter Lopez from pillar to post, and each time Lopez tried to regroup and engage toe-to-toe, it was Lopez who was bounced around the ring. Lopez came out with a vengeance in the 5th, but Wongjongkam responded and the two traded blistering shots the rest of the way, with Lopez getting an advantage. Swelling around the left eye of Wongjongkam also became a problem. But he would respond in the 6th, thoroughly neutralizing Lopez and ripping off hooks to the head and body that were shaking Lopez hard. With 10 seconds left, out of nowhere, Lopez unloads a series of blows punctuated by a hook to the head that drops Wongjongkam to the canvas, turning a clear round for Wongjongkam into a 10-8 for Lopez. The scoring would become a moot point, though. The swelling became more of an issue as the bout went on, despite Wongjongkam's best efforts. Finally, Lopez would tag him solidly in the 11th, and Wongjongkam was unable to rise, letting Lopez retain the title. Ricardo Lopez KO11 Pongsaklek Wongjongkam IBF Welterweight: Champion Wilfred Benitez (4-0) vs Bruce Finch (0-2) Finch is dropped for 9 in the opening round and takes a brutal beating for 4 rounds before responding. Finch has Benitez in trouble in the fifth and sixth, but Benitez resumes his dominance, and swelling around Finch's left eye becomes a major issue. The doctor let's him continue in the 9th, but after Benitez rips a couple of hooks off his head early in the 11th, the bout is stopped. Wilfred Benitez TKO11 Bruce Finch IBF Heavyweight: Champion Mike Tyson (4-0, 3 KO) vs Ernie Terrell (2-1) If the thought is the best way to fight Tyson is to smack him in the mouth, then Terrell certainly gave his best effort. Tyson is dropped a minute into the first round of a dirty, nasty fight. The crowd leaps to its collective feet, but Tyson is up at 7 and weathers the storm. An angry Tyson comes out in the second and assaults Terrell, landing several thudding shots, but Terrell is standing at the end of three minutes. Tyson controls most of the third as well, but Terrell is standing in there with him. Rounds 4 and 5 turn tactical, much to Tyson's dismay, and he is warned for hitting on the break late in the round. Tyson hurts Terrell badly with a hook near the end of the 6th, but Terrell remains on his feet. Terrell is keeping Tyson at bay in the 7th, and Tyson responds with using his shoulders in close, drawing a warning from ref Frank Cappaccino. Tyson batters Terrell in the 8th, and it appears the challenger is fading quickly. But in the 9th, it's Terrell who starts with the roughhousing, holding Tyson down by the neck during an exchange to draw his own warning. Terrell's left eye is swelling, and he could be getting desperate. But in the 10th, Terrell dominates Tyson, finding every opening and picking him apart with his jab throughout the round. Sure enough, at the end of the round it's Tyson who is exhibiting swelling around his right eye. Tyson controls the 11th, before an exciting 12th round sees Terrell take everything Tyson can unload and respond with everything but the kitchen sink. Both fighters are staggered during the round, and Terrell at this point is fighting essentially with one eye. The 13th sees a much slower pace, but gets some odd excitement when Cappaccino takes a point away from Terrell for leaning on Tyson's neck again. Terrell later is also warned for holding and hitting in a round that seems to go Tyson's way regardless, making it a 2-point round. The 14th is uneventful, bringing us to the 15th in a surprisingly close fight. Given that Tyson chose this opponent, it's certainly closer than he expected, and a real possibility he could lose his belt. The round starts measured as both fighters are gassed, Terrell has one good eye and Tyson is working on, perhaps, 1 1/4. But it livens up when a Terrell uppercut rips Tyson above that right eye and the blood starts flowing. Tyson ties Terrell up shortly afterward and much of the next minute is spent exchanging hugs and trapping the arms. Terrell lands a pair of jabs, Tyson lands one of his own, but the two basically bear hug their way to the bell and the decision, Tyson looking nervous, pacing in his corner. The scoring... 143-142...Tyson . . . . . 143-141...Terrell . . . . . . . 143-141 for the winner....................... . . . . . . . . . . ...and STILL the IBF Heavyweight Champion of the World...IRON MIKE TYSON!!! The champ escapes a thriller, and Terrell sets himself as a legitimate contender. The point deduction actually cost him a draw. Not sure he can give this effort again, but his approach will surely be noticed by whoever else comes in to challenge Tyson. Mike Tyson SD 15 Ernie Terrell More results to come... January Title Fight Recaps Continued
WBA Jr. Middleweight: Champion Mike McCallum (4-0, 2 KO) vs Gianfranco Rosi (0-1-1) McCallum chooses a perfect first defense opponent. Rosi is tough and game, but significantly overmatched. He takes a great deal of punishment, but after almost 10 rounds of being worked over by the Bodysnatcher, his face is a mess and the ringside physician won't allow this fight to proceed any further. Mike McCallum TKO 10 Gianfranco Rosi WBA Featherweight: Salvador Sanchez (4-0) vs Antonio Cermeno (1-2, 1 KO) This was supposed to be a walk in the park for Sanchez. But when, in the opening round, his left eye began swelling seriously, things started to look a bit different. Cermeno was taking aim at the eye, and probably did so too much. But he knew he was an outclassed fighter here and there was a weak spot he was determined to expose. Sanchez was ripping Cermeno apart, but Cermeno's jab stuck out there enough that Sanchez's eye was closing in rapid fashion. His corner was working over it hard every minute break, but it was certainly affecting Sanchez's performance. Fortunately for him, he sliced Cermeno by his right eye in the 6th, and would reopen the cut several times throughout the fight. Cermeno had to fight his own issues, and it may have saved Sanchez. His aggressiveness left him, and Sanchez spent the second half of this fight in a defensive posture, knowing full well his eye was in terrible shape. But he controlled the later rounds - including an 11th round knockdown of Cermeno -enough to keep the physician from having to check him and Sanchez ends up surviving more of a challenge than expected. Salvador Sanchez UD 15 Antonio Cermeno (147-139, 145-141, 144-141) WBA Flyweight: Champion Miguel Canto (4-0, 1 KO) vs Melchor Cobb Castro (3-2, 1 KO) Cobb Castro complained loudly after the fight that Canto was intentionally head butting him. There appeared to be three butts in the fight, each right above the eye, which ultimately led to Cobb Castro's demise. Canto dominates the bout, and in the 11th the ringside doctor says enough is enough. An easy win for Canto, the kind you expect in a first defense where the opponent is hand picked. Miguel Canto TKO 11 Melchor Cobb Castro That concludes the title fights for January. I was watching that Sanchez fight legitimately concerned they were going to stop it due to swelling. Fortunately, he made it through. GH |

Geez, that Tyson-Terrell fight was a classic, GForce. I really liked the way you described it. Makes me excited about what is to come in my HBF. Great stuff!
