MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SENATORS KNOCK OFF RED SOX IN EXTRA INNINGS Buddy Lewis delivered an rbi single in the top of the 11th inning to give the Washington Senators an 8-7 victory over Boston, spoiling a dramatic Red Sox comeback bid. Trailing 7-3 entering the bottom of the 9th the Red Sox scored 4 times, including a 3-run homer off the bat of Ted Williams with 2 out, to tie the game. The loss drops the Red Sox 5 games behind idle Cleveland in the American League pennant race. The Senators are now just a game and a half behind the Red Sox. In other American League action Marius Russo hurled 8 innings of 3 hit ball in the Yankees 5-1 win over Detroit while rookie outfielder Wally Westlake's third homer of the season helped Philadelphia past the Chicago White Sox 4-3. NATIONAL LEAGUE Charley Schanz won his 19th game of the season and Buster Adams hit a 3-run homer leading Philadelphia past the Chicago Cubs and moved the Phillies to within a game of the National League leaders. Third place Pittsburgh also won, beating Cincinnati 7-4. Reserve infielder Lee Handley had a 5 hit game for the Bucs while Preacher Roe snapped a 4 game personal losing streak and improved his record to 18-6 on the season. Sam Chapman and Chuck Workman each homered in the Boston Braves 8-0 whitewashing of Brooklyn. For Chapman, it was his league leading 24th round tripper of the season. In St Louis, Vince Dimaggio had 3 hits including a homer to lead the New York Giants past the Cardinals 6-2. Code:

USC, which suffered through a dissappointing 1946, is rated the 6th best team in the national pre-season poll. UCLA is the only other PCC school in the top 20, holding down the 17th spot. Last season the Bruins were unbeaten until a Rose Bowl loss to Michigan. The Trojans are considered the creme of the conference thanks to an outstanding defense led by linemen Paul *Cleary and Ralph *Heywood. Senior tackle John * Ferraro and the rest of the line will be the key to the offensive which is led by sophomore QB John *Powers. Junior back Don *Doll handles the bulk of the rushing duties. Like USC, UCLA's success depends upon the performance of it's veteran defense. Linebackers Don *Paul and Jack *Myers are both possible first round NFL picks. Cornerback Jerry Shipkey and lineman Roy *Kurrasch will also play a big role on the defensive side of the ball. On offense the only thing senior QB Ben *Reiges needs to do is look for receiver Tom *Fears. Fears is a Heisman Trophy candidate and a possible first overall NFL pick. Code:

Romero scored a unanimous decision victory over Johnny King in Liverpool last night to get back the title he was forced to surrender when he beat Canadian Fernando Gagnon for the World Bantamweight crown. Romero would lose the world title in his first defense, against Cuban Luis Galvani, freeing him to go after the European belt once again. The victory improves Romero's record to 22-7-1 while the loss drops King to 37-7. King had claimed the title in July by scoring a unanimous decision over Italian Guido Ferracin in the final of a 4-fighter elimination tournament to replace Romero. One other bout of note also in the bantamweight division. Hiroshi Horiguchi of Japan scored an 8th round knock out of veteran Canadian Katsumi Morioka in Vancouver. The bout was a tuneup for Horiguchi who will face World Champion Luis Galvani in Tokyo at the end of September. GOLF HOGAN HAS CLINCHED MONEY TITLE With two regular events plus the year end Tournament of Champions still to be played Ben Hogan has already clinched the top spot on the year end money winners list. With 6 victories and 12 top 5 finishes Hogan has earned more than twice as much money as the number two man on the list. He has made the cut in 16 of the 17 events completed so far this season. Here are the leading money winners on the tour this season. The top 20 will qualify for the Tournament of Champions that features a record $3000 prize for the winner. The top 40 on the money list automatically qualify for their tour card for next season. All remaining golfers will have to go through Q School to regain their tour card. Code:

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL INDIANS RALLY PAST BROWNS A 5-run 9th inning lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 7-4 victory over the Browns at Sportsmen's Park yesterday. Trailing 4-2 entering the final inning the Indians got a lead off triple from pinch-hitter Ken Keltner and built a rally from there with 5 singles, a walk, a wildpitch from Browns reliever Frank Papish and 2 St Louis errors. Ray Poat allowed just 5 hits in 8 innings work for his 10th victory of the season. In other American League action a pair of 2-run doubles in the 8th inning off the bats of Johnny Hudson and Stan Spence lifted Boston past Washington 4-2. Fred Hutchinson took the loss despite having a 1 hitter through 7 innings. In New York, Don Lang's rbi single in the 11th gave the Yankees a 4-3 win over Detroit. CUBS CONTINUE TO ROLL ALONG The Chicago Cubs beat Philadelphia for the third time in 4 games and are again 2 games ahead of the Phillies after a 5-3 victory yesterday. Joe Marty's bases loaded double in the 6th was the key hit for the Cubs who will play Philadelphia 2 more times in this rare 6 game series before the two clubs meet again in Chicago next week for a 3 game set. Pittsburgh remains 3.5 games off the pace after the Pirates trimmed Cincinnati 5-4. Outfielder Jim Russell had a 4 hit game for the winners. In other action, Chuck Workman's 10th inning single gave Boston a 4-3 win over Brooklyn while in St Louis Earl Torgeson homered and Frankie Baumholtz delivered a bases-loaded single in the Cards 6-1 win over New York. In this issue we will take a look at the AFC and offer some predictions for each of the divisions. Tomorrow the focus will be on the NFC and TFSN will release our Championship game predictions. We start with the AFC EAST (1946 record in brackets). Teams are listed in predicted order of finish. NEW ENGLAND REMAINS CLASS OF AFC EAST NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (12-3-1)- The Pats have a solid offense led by running back Mario Glenn. Injuries limited the 7th year pro to just 841 yards and 11 games a year ago but if he can stay healthy he could approach the 1865 yards he ran for in 1944. The biggest strength is their offensive line which includes allpro tackle Andre Ellis and guard Derrick Elling. Rookie Hugh *Taylor and veteran Jim Houser are decent receivers and QB Bob Irvin is solid but needs to cut down on his interceptions. Defensively the Pats have a strong linebacking corps which includes a pair of 4 time all-pros in MLB Jon Quinn and OLB Tauras Redding. 4th year DT John Davis hasn't made allpro yet but that might change this season. Safety Jeremy Williams and first round pick CB Tom Morris anchor the secondary. OUTLOOK - There is no reason to think the Pats can't win the division for the third time in the past 4 years. NEW YORK JETS (7-9) - The Jets will go as far as the legs of Steve *Van Buren will carry them. He rushed for over 1700 yards a year ago and may be even better this season because of the upgrades to the offensive line thru the draft. First round pick Albert *Nemetz was a star offensive tackle at Army and will be joined by former Ohio State guard Bill *Hackett. QB could be a question mark but Keith Reeves did a decent job in the preseason games. With Van Buren and backup RB Robert Dorsey the Jets don't need Reeves to win games, just to not lose them. The defense is balanced with LB James Saylor as the only true star. OUTLOOK - A solid team even with a one-dimension offense but they won't surpass the Patriots this year. BUFFALO BILLS (6-9-1) - The Bills have a pair of tremendous receivers and outstanding cornerbacks but are weak in the trenches and lack a QB who can take advantage of the wideouts. On a team with a star passer, WR Sonny Pointer would have far more than two all-pro nominations. Dan Peete, like Pointer a Bill since the league formed in 1941, has tremendous hands but QB Rod Bird has not been able to capitalize on his receivers skills. The Bills hope Demarco Dickinson, who led North Carolina to a perfect regular season last year, is their QB of the future but unfortunately the future is not now for Dickinson who will require some seasoning. Rookie Buddy *Young out of Illinois gives the Bills a decent running back but the offensive line is in desperate need of an upgrade. Greg Fletcher and DD Glover are both outstanding cover cornerbacks but the rest of the defense is average at best. OUTLOOK - Until they address weakness on both the offensive and defensive line the Bills will be a .500 team at best. MIAMI DOLPHINS (6-10) - A 3-1 preseason led by some outstanding play from QB Woody Brooks has south Florida excited about the Dolphins, a team that has had 3 straight losing seasons. With workhorse RB Stacey Jolley, who led the league in rushing with 1744 yards a year ago, the Dolphins can certainly move the ball on the ground. If Brooks can continue to play like he did in the preseason that will make receivers Hugh Vick and Keyou Kinard even better than they were a year ago when they combined for 129 receptions and 15 touchdowns. OUTLOOK - It all hinges on QB Woody Brooks. If he can light up defenses like he did in the preseason and cut down on his interceptions the Dolphins could make their first playoff appearance in 4 years. TWO WAY RACE IN THE AFC NORTH CLEVELAND BROWNS (9-7)- The Browns surprised everyone a year ago by making it all the way to the NFL championship game before falling to Chicago. The Browns have never finished a regular season more than a game above or below .500 but 1947 may change that trend. There are some weaknesses on the Browns but there are also some areas of tremendous talent. Zach Kruczek was second in the league with 106 catches a year ago and he is quite possibly the best wide receiver in the NFL. Tackles Jim Moulds and Frank Huntley are the key cogs to arguably the best offensive line in the conference. Unfortunately RB Tony Ellis is merely average and Cleveland lacks a marquee quarterback. On defense there is all-pro end Wayne *Millner who had 11 sacks a year ago and a decent corps of linebackers. However, aside from all-pro Michael Jones the secondary is suspect. OUTLOOK - Browns have the best chance of winning this division but could face a stiff test from Baltimore. BALTIMORE RAVENS (7-8-1) - League champions in 1945, the Ravens defense fell apart last season and they missed the playoffs. Baltimore focused on addressing that problem during the offseason and the addition of first round pick FS Vance Steele from Boston College makes this the best secondary in the conference. Ex-Oregon Duck DE Eric Terrell was picked up in the second round and he has outstanding potential. Linebacker remains an area of concern. Offensively, QB John Foster has all the potential in the world as he displayed when he was named MVP of the 1945 championship game. However, more often than not he has been very inconsistant and injuries last season did little to help the situation. If he stays healthy and has his mind on success the Ravens will win the division handily. If not, Baltimore will have to hope RB Fabien Montgomery can duplicate his career best 1342 rushing yards from a year ago. Outlook - Everything depends on Foster. If the former Oklahoma signal caller finally lives up to his immense potential Baltimore could run away with the division. PITTSBURGH STEELERS (8-8) - The Steelers have never made the playoffs despite finishing at or above .500 four of the past five years. Their best talent is on the defensive side of the ball including all-pro CB Todd Elwell and LB Shurron Hannam along with rookie LB Bob *Forte. However, the defensive line is below average. QB Tom Friede struggled in his first season as a full-time starter with a 62.2 QB rating and 25 interceptions. Pittsburgh lacks a dominant running back or a big play receiver. Outlook - Despite the weakness on the offensive side of the ball and at defensive line, the linebackers and secondary are good enough to keep the Steelers close in most games. With a few breaks this will be another .500 season for Pittsburgh but likely once again not good enough for the postseason. CINCINNATI BENGALS (7-9) - 3 years ago Bud Rutledge was one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Unfortunately the 37 year old looked like he lost quite a bit off of his game the last couple of years yet he remains the Bengals best option. Receiver Bob *Shaw had 91 catches as a sophomore and looks poised to become one of the best wideouts in the game. RB Bill *Dudley gained just 553 yards in an injury plagued season a year ago and he is hurting again as this season prepares to begin. Linebacker Jeff Perry was among the league leader in tackles and the Bengals will be deadly against the run with Duval Van Buren and Speedy Garrity clogging up the middle. Kicker Steve Modzelewski is among the best in the game. Outlook - Unless Rutledge discovers the fountain of youth the Bengals will fight it out with the Steelers to see who finishes third in the division. TENNESSEE IS THE TITAN OF THE AFC SOUTH TENNESSEE TITANS (11-5)- The Titans should have their 3rd straight double-digit victory season in 1947. The defensive line is among the best in the league anchored by tackles Ernie Savage and Richard Jones along with end Ade Coulter. QB Manfred Gayle has plenty of options for the passing game with the first one always being all-pro wideout Mark Hayman. The running game is not a priority in Tennessee but Derek Mason can carry the rock with the best of them. Outlook - Clearly the class of the division once again. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (7-9) - The Jags biggest weakness a year ago was their pass defense. The addition of first round pick CB John *Podesto should help but Jacksonville's defense is still a major cause for concern. The defensive line is solid but there are plenty of holes in other areas. Tommy Bledsoe returns at QB but could be pressured for the starting role by former Cincinnati backup Doug Clarke. RB Keith Musso has never duplicated the numbers he put up in 1942 when he was named league offensive MVP but he is still a dependable runner. Lewis Smith had 108 catches a year ago and made the second all-pro team appearance of his career. Offensive tackle Jerry Andruzzi and guard Lennox Kane are all-pro's but there are some holes elsewhere on the line. Outlook - It will be up to the Jags offense if the team is going to contend this season and it is unlikely they will have enough to make the playoffs. HOUSTON TEXANS (8-7-1) - After sneaking into the playoffs on the final day of the season, the Texans made it all the way to the AFC title game. However QB Vaughan Diedrick is gone to Philadelphia after starting every game in Texans history. Diedrick had clearly lost a lot last season but his replacement, longtime backup E.G. Atoe, has been with the Texans 7 years and never taken a regular season snap. If Atoe struggles third round pick Jerry Henley may get a shot but this will be a long season for Texans if that happens. The Texans have no running game to speak of and while the receiving corps, led by Mel Ours, Art Tasker and rookie Walt *Schlinkman, is outstanding there are doubts as to whether Atoe can get them the ball. A player to keep an eye on is first round pick Bob *Ravensberg. The linebacker from Indiana will be counted on to upgrade an average defense. Outlook - Forget a surprising playoff run this season, .500 would be a big achievement. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS (8-8) - Eric Poppinga is the new Colts QB but he was just 4-9 at the helm of the Giants a year ago and they had better talent than this Indy club. Poppinga does have a pair of decent receivers to throw to in Jabar Rivers and Garland Brown along with a rookie running back, Bob Chappuis, with some potential. However, I think you will be hard pressed to find a less talented defense than the Colts unit. Outlook - 6 wins at best for a terrible defensive team with little offensive firepower. RAIDERS LOOK TO REBOUND IN AFC WEST OAKLAND RAIDERS (8-8) - A year ago this paper picked the Oakland Raiders to finish first in the West and make some noise in the playoffs. What happened? The Raiders ran into some injuries and even when healthy failed to live up to expectations and finished third in the division. So what do we do this year? You got it. We pick the Raiders to win the west once again. This team just has too much talent not to make the playoffs. Johnny Cushing is in his 7th year and ran for just 1437 yards (which is low for him but a great season for just about anyone else) but he is still one of the best backs in the league. Rookie Tom Maddox looked great in camp and appears to have won the starting QB job away from Antwan Baker. Another rookie, Camp *Wilson, should add depth to the receiving corps. The offensive line is among the best in the game. Linebackers Pat Harder, Javon Love and Johndale Hardy make the Raiders defensive among the quickest in the league. Outlook - If they stay healthy the Raiders will win the division. Even with a couple of key injuries a wildcard berth is still a very good possibility. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (11-5) - Behind the signal calling of Ulish Groce the Chiefs made their first ever postseason appearance a year ago. Groce is still the starting QB, at least for now as rookie Tommy *Thompson, who missed all of last season, continues to push him. Bruce Jones is yet another solid runner in a division full of great running backs. WR Pettis Neumann has 263 catches in his first three seasons but has yet to make an all-pro team. That will change some day soon. The Chiefs strength is their offense but the defense has some talent as well including 2-time allpro CB Larry Barnett. Outlook - It is a tough division but the Chiefs should battle for a wildcard spot. DENVER BRONCOS (13-3) - The Broncos have something to prove after an early playoff exit as it remains to be seen if the 7 game improvement over the previous season was the start of something big or just a fluke. The defense is solid but there are some question marks on the offensive line and at QB. Jay Cason has been the starting QB for Denver since the league formed in 1941 but backup Gary Chase may take over this year. Neither has played exceptionally well the past few seasons. There are no questions at running back, where Oscar Hartings returns for a 7th season, or at wide receiver with Jerry Watson, Brian Gardner and first round pick Elbie *Nichol. Outlook - The Broncos will not duplicate their 13-3 record of a year ago but the question is just how far will they fall? It says here they will miss the playoffs and finish 8-8. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (7-9) - Former Jacksonville QB Justin Jackson never lived up to expectations with the Jags but we are betting a fresh start in San Diego will allow everyone to see just how good the former UNLV signal caller really is. Rookie RB Bob *Fenimore will go a long ways towards making Jackson's job easier. The defense, led by DE Reggie White (not that Reggie White) is decent. White led the team with 12 sacks last year. TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : THURSDAY AUGUST 28, 1947
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL CUBS STRETCH LEAD TO 3 GAMES WITH 4-3 WIN OVER PHILS The Chicago Cubs increased their lead on the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League standings to 3 games with a 4-3 win yesterday. The Cubs have beaten the Phillies 4 times in the last 5 days and will look to make it 5 out of 6 with 21 game winner Vern Olsen on the hill in the finale of the 6 game set today. It is the only 6 game series in the entire major leagues this season and could not come at a better time for the Cubs, who have been practically unbeatable the past month and a half. In yesterday's win Ed Head pitched 8 solid innings to run his record to 15-10 while rookie Jim Hearn pitched a scoreless ninth to lower his era to 1.93 and claim his 5th save. Eddie Waitkus with a pair of hits and an rbi led the Chicago offense. In Cincinnati, Alex Kampouris had 3 hits to lead the Reds to a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh. Former Cy Young winner Cliff Melton took the loss and drops to 14-10 on the season. The fading Pirates are now 4.5 games behind Chicago. The Cardinals rallied for a 7-5 win over the Giants in New York. Buddy Hassett's 2-run pinch-hit double in the top of the ninth tied the game and then another 2 run pinch-hit double, this one off the bat of Lynn Myers, won it for the Cards in the top of the 10th. Extra-innings in Boston as well with the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers winning 3-2 after Pete Reiser led off the top of the 10th with a triple and he scored the winner on a Carl Furillo rbi single. AMERICAN LEAGUE Bill Lohrman and Archie McKain each pitched a complete game 5-hitter in a terrific pitching duel but in the end Lohrman's Cleveland Indians squad prevailed 1-0 thanks to a Lou Boudreau sacrifice fly in the 4th inning. The loss drops McKain's St Louis club 7.5 games behind the front-running Indians. Lohrman improves to 14-2 and lowers his league leading era to 1.52. Boston stays 5 games back after the Red Sox beat Washington 2-1 thanks to a Ted Williams pinch-hit homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning. In other action Philadelphia scored 3 unearned runs in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees in New York. A's starter Fred Caligiuri left the game with an arm injury and appears to be done for the season. Caliguiri was 14-11 with a 3.67 era in 34 starts this seaosn. Detroit also lost a starting pitcher in it's 11-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Ken Heintzelman hurt his shoulder early in the game and is expected to miss 2 weeks. Code:

The Pats won the AFC East with a 12-3-1 record last year but lost their playoff opener to an underdog Cleveland Browns squad. The Pats were beaten up and were down to their 3rd string QB in the game but still should have beaten Cleveland if not for a pair of missed field goals from Brennan Armstead, who has since lost his kicking job to rookie Rick Wells. New England looks like the team to beat in the AFC East and should provide a strong test for the Chargers who have missed the postseason each of the past 4 years. San Diego has a decent team but the AFC West is arguably the best division in the NFL right now. Justin Jackson will make his regular season debut in a Chargers uniform after 6 seasons with Jacksonville. The often-injured QB has 49 career starts. He never really lived up to potential in Jacksonville but gets a clean slate with the Chargers. Interceptions have always been his downfall and he was picked off 4 times in the preseason. NFL SEASON PREVIEW Part 2 of 2 teams are listed in predicted order of finish with last years record in brackets. REDSKINS TO END EAGLES FLIGHT ATOP NFC EAST WASHINGTON REDSKINS (8-8)- This is the year the Redskins end the Eagles 2 year old hold on the division. The Redskins, when healthy, have one of the best offenses in the league led by QB Sammy *Baugh. The only negative for Baugh are his bad ankles, which have forced him to miss 13 games over the past two seasons. Bob *Seymour is a solid running back who gained over 1500 yards on the ground last year and receivers Wayne Miller and Dante *Lavelli combined for 155 receptions a year ago. The offensive line is adequate but it is essential they limit the number of hits Baugh takes this season if the Redskins are going to be successful. The defense is not anything special but they do enough to get the job done. Outlook - If Baugh remains healthy the Redskins should win the division, but that is a big if. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (11-5) - With 5 playoff appearances in 6 years and the 1942 NFL championship to their credit the Eagles are one of the leagues most successful franchises. Philadelphia does not do anything fancy prefering to give the ball to Harley Mitchell and let the strong offensive line do it's job. Ken Neal and Doug Bass are nearly equal in ability at QB and the Eagles are confident with either of them under center but the first option is always to run the ball. The Eagles also added ex-Houston starter Vaughn Diedrich as the third string QB but his role will be only to mentor Neal and Bass. The defense does not have any superstars but it is a solid group that plays better than it's individual parts might indicate it should. Outlook - Washington may edge out the Eagles for first place but a wildcard berth should definately be in store for the Eagles. NEW YORK GIANTS (5-11) - Despite never making a playoff appearance Benny Frey has coached the Giants all 6 of their seasons and he is back for a 7th. The playoffs are a pretty much out of the question again this season as the Giants have no where near the talent level required to compete with the Eagles and Redskins. The defense is solid, particularily in the secondary and at linebacker with Mel Hein and Joey Collins. Offensively, the Giants just cant cut it. With Eric Poppinga gone to the Colts it looks the QB duties will fall to backup Lincoln Hill but don't be surprised if second round pick Harry *Gilmer sees plenty of action. Tight end Pete *Pihos was taken third overall by the Giants. The ex-Indiana Hoosier is a solid talent but the Giants had far bigger needs particularily at wide receiver where only Chuck Myers is dependable. Outlook - With Dallas in the division at least the Giants can be confident of not finishing dead last. DALLAS COWBOYS (4-12) - The Cowboys are 16-32 over the last 3 seasons and things do not look much better this year. Many are still shaking their heads at Dallas' decision to draft George *Savitsky ahead of QB Otto *Graham first overall. That is not a knock on Savitsky, he will be an outstanding defensive linemen but Graham could be the second-coming of Sid Luckman and is already a better QB than the Cowboys Doug Schroeder. Raymond Cash is a solid RB and the offensive line is young and improving. With the exception of veteran linebackers Bronko Caravello and Jake Stemke no defensive starter has more than 3 years experience. Outlook - The best the Cowboys can hope for is to catch the Giants for third place in the division. BEARS AGAIN WILL MAUL OPPONENTS IN NFC NORTH CHICAGO BEARS (14-2)- The Bears have won the division 5 straight seasons and this year will make it six. The defense has some question marks but with an offense that includes reigning league MVP Sid *Luckman at QB, 1000 yard rusher George *McAfee, and WR Ken *Kavanaugh, great defense is not necessary. The Bears did suffer a blow in the preseason when number 2 wideout Robert Feeley tore up his ankle and is likely done for the year. However, with Matt Sikahema and second round pick Jim *Keane waiting in the wings there is plenty of depth. The Bears used their first round pick on Purdue OT Tom *Hughes and he looked like a future all-pro in preseason action. Outlook - Nothing less than another trip to the league title game will satisfy fans in Chicago. GREEN BAY PACKERS (5-11) - Aside from the Bears the rest of the division is just an afterthought but rookie Packers QB Frank *Albert is hoping to change that way of thinking. There is some talent at the skill positions including veteran WR Don *Hutson and RB Tony *Canadeo, both with multiple all-pro nominations to their credit. The offensive line is solid and the defense should be better than it was a year ago. Outlook - If everything goes right the Packers could earn a wildcard berth. DETROIT LIONS (6-10) - The Lions have not made the playoffs since winning the first league title game in 1941 but that could be changing in the next couple of years. Through shrewd drafting Detroit has quietly built up a solid group of talented youngsters led by third year QB Bob *Waterfield and 4th year running back Fred Johnson. The offensive line is very good, particularily at tackle with second year players Lou *Groza and Clenton Johnson (no relation to Fred). New additions this year include pass rushing defensive end Elmer *Mader and ex-army fullback Doc *Blanchard. The development of second round pick Armegis Baker suffered a setback when the Virginia Tech cornerback tore up his knee and will be out for the season. Outlook - An improving team but still a few players away from a wildcard berth and a mile away from the Bears. MINNESOTA VIKINGS (7-9) - The Vikings won just 2 games in 1944 but responded with a 13-3 season the following year and their first playoff berth. A slump last year left them out of the playoffs once again and if anything this team seems to have regressed further despite a 3-1 preseason record. Paul *Governali, the Vikings first round pick from Columbia, outplayed incumbant Jim Elliot to win the starting QB job but there are questions as to whether Governali is ready for this level. Making it even tougher for Governali is the lack of a feature back and some big question marks on the offensive line. Defensively the secondary is outstanding but there are plenty of weak spots elsewhere. Outlook - Could surpass the Packers and Lions this season but if things go the wrong way could be looking at first overall pick in next years draft. 3 TEAM RACE IN NFC SOUTH NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (10-6) - The Saints have one of the best offensive lines in the league and a terrific running back in Todd Berger. Bob Sommer and rookie Barney *Poole are solid receivers. The only question mark is can QB Ryan Boyette play as well or better than he did last season, his first year in New Orleans after 5 seasons as a backup in Philadelphia. The defense has some holes but the addition of first round pick Neil *Armstrong from Oklahoma A&M plugs one at cornerback. Outlook - Should be the class of the division but will face stiffer competition than a year ago. ATLANTA FALCONS (6-10)- You would be hard pressed finding three better offensive players on one team than QB Arnie *Herber, RB Antowain Anderson and WR Duane Whelihan of the Falcons. The problem is they lack a supporting cast. The defense has plenty of weak spots and the offensive line play is spotty. Outlook - If everything goes right and the big 3 stay healthy the Falcons could win the division. If one or more of the big 3 miss an extended amount of time or the defense plays less than it's potential it could be another 6-10 season. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (5-11)- With only 17 wins in their last 3 seasons the Bucs had little fan support until the Cowboys passed on Otto *Graham and the Bucs got the Northwestern QB with the second overall pick. Add in a 3-1 preseason and fans are positively giddy in Tampa. QB was not the Bucs biggest need but Graham was just too good to pass up. The team has still not announced whether Graham or second year man Paul *Christman will get the nod this weekend. There is also a battle for playing time at running back between second year men Darren McLeod and Keyshawn Smith. Each gained over 700 yards while starting 8 games a year ago. The downside is the defense is less than stellar and the offensive line is below average. Outlook - The future looks bright but is likely a couple of years away. CAROLINA PANTHERS (6-10) - It looks like another long season for a team that prior to last year made it at least as far as the conference championship game three years in a row. Keith Meade and rookie Herman *Wedermeyer give the Panthers a strong running attack but QB Javon Jamieson is suspect at best and the receivers are barely adequate. The secondary is not to bad but the defensive front seven are far below average as a unit. Outlook - Panthers may contend, but only for the first overall draft pick. 49ERS FACE CHALLENGE TO REPEAT IN NFC WEST SAN FRANCISCO (11-5) - If the San Francisco 49ers are to repeat as West Division champs they will need another big year from their defense. They have probably the best defensive front four in the conference and their secondary is above average as well. The offense could be a concern as San Francisco does not possess any outstanding skill position players. QB Koy Harris is a marginal starter and RB Travis Henderson has yet to show anything special in his 5 year career. Outlook - The defense may be good enough to get the Niners another playoff spot but they will face a stiff challenge from Arizona and St Louis. ARIZONA CARDINALS (8-8) - As good as the Niners defense is it pales in comparison to the Cardinals unit. SS Booker Hasselbeck has been an all-pro each of his 6 seasons in the league and linebackers Mel *Hein, Randy Eaton and Neill Bledsoe are all punishing hitters. Now that he has a year of experience the Cards are hoping for bigger things from second year QB Trent Fenney and they drafted Hubert *Bechtol from Texas in the first round to give Fenney a go-to receiver. RB Tuffy *Leemans looked good at times last year but needs to be more consistant. Outlook - If things fall in to place Arizona will battle San Francisco right down to the wire for the division title. ST LOUIS RAMS (6-10) - You would be hard pressed to find a 6-10 team with more talent than the Rams. Unfortunately, the club has never been able to get all that talent playing on the same page. QB Rod Dugans hurt his foot in the final preseason game and may miss the opener but he needs to have a season more like he did two years ago than last year when he threw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns. The defense will be stronger this season with the addition of rookie CB Ken Murphy from USC and LB Burr *Baldwin from UCLA. Outlook - Could this finally be the year this group of talented individuals finally play like a team? If so, we will have a 3-way race for the division title. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (7-9) -The franchise is still looking for it's first ever playoff appearance but don't expect it to come this year. QB Doug Kooistra is a big question mark and the jury is still out on last year's first round pick Marion *Motley, who never did find his stride. Joining Motley in the Seattle backfield this year will be Heisman Trophy winner Glenn *Davis from Army. The defense is adequate as is the offensive line. Outlook - Likely headed for another 7 or 8 win season but more because of the quality of the division than any weakness on the Seahawks part. They could be the best fourth place team in the league. TFSN's POSTSEASON PREDICTIONS: NFC TITLE GAME : Chicago over Washington AFC TITLE GAME : Tennessee over Oakland NFL CHAMPIONSHIP : Chicago over Tennessee BOXING ARMSTRONG KO'S HOSHINO 4th ranked featherweight Henry Armstrong had little difficult disposing of Harold Hoshino with a 3rd round knockout. Armstrong improves to 31-2 and is in line for a shot at world featherweight champion Willie Pep. Hoshino is knocked out for the second straight time and sees his record drop to 25-5-1. The Seattle native is ranked 10 in the weight class. Speaking of Pep, he will defend his title tonight in San Francisco against marginal contender Chico Rosa. On the undercard of the Armstrong-Hoshino bout California flyweight Jackie Jurich won a majority decision over Japan's Yoshio Shirai. Jurich is now ranked the 8th best flyweight in the world and improves to 16-4 while 9th ranked Shirai falls to 11-4-2. GOLF WESTERN OPEN BEGINS TODAY The Salt Lake City Country Club in Utah will host the most prestigous tournament west of the Mississippi when the PGA tour kicks off the Western Open starting today. Ben Hogan is the defending champ, having won the event when it was held near St Louis last year. I have found a game that with a little editing I could add the Tour de France to my replay. I have also found the complete year by year results for it. However, I doubt there would be much interest in this so I wont unless a couple of people think they would like it included. Any thoughts?

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PATRIOTS DROP THE BALL IN SEASON OPENER The San Diego Chargers capitalized on five New England turnovers, including two in the first minute of the game, and hammered the Patriots 36-3 in the NFL season opener. The trouble began for New England right from the opening kickoff when rookie return man Bob *Jenkins fumbled and the Chargers Charlie Scudero scooped up the loose ball and raced 19 yards into the endzone. After the extra-point the Chargers lined up for the kickoff and once again Jenkins coughed the ball up on the return. This time it took two plays before the Chargers scored another touchdown with a Rob Douglas 13 yard run finishing off the mini-drive and making the score 14-0 San Diego. Before the first quarter came to a close the Chargers had a 19-0 lead thanks to a safety and a field goal. Early in the second quarter things got even worse for the Pats when QB Bob Irvin was injured. Fortunately the injury was not serious enough to put him out long term but Irvin was done for the day. Backup Terry Stephens had little success, completing 13-of-23 but getting picked off twice. The Chargers, on the other hand, received a strong game from QB Justin Jackson in his San Diego debut after 6 seasons in Jacksonville. Jackson completed 23-of-32 for 298 yards including a 35 yard touchdown strike to Marquise Woodson. Jackson was intercepted once, but that came midway through the third quarter with the game well out of reach. Rookie San Diego running back Bob *Fenimore also had a strong game, gaining 87 yards and scoring his first NFL touchdown. The Patriots are in New York next weekend to play the Jets while San Diego travels to Oakland to meet the Raiders. REGULAR SEASON WEEK 1 SCHEDULE Thursday August 28 San Diego 36 New England 3 Sunday August 31 Buffalo at Kansas City Miami at Denver Tennessee at Cleveland Jacksonville at Pittsburgh Indianapolis at Baltimore Houston at Cincinnati Philadelphia at Chicago Dallas at Green Bay NY Giants at Minnesota Tampa at St Louis Atlanta at Arizona Carolina at San Francisco New Orleans at Seattle NY Jets at Oakland Monday September 1 Washington at Detroit MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL 9TH INNING RALLY GIVES PHILLIES NEW LIFE Heading in to the 9th inning of yesterday's game in Chicago the Philadelphia Phillies pennant hopes appeared to be if not dead than certainly on life support. The Phillies were trailing the Cubs 4-2 and were 3 outs away from losing 5 out of 6 at Wrigley and falling 4 games behind Chicago. Then lightning struck. Cubs ace Vern Olsen, who had allowed 2 runs and 5 hits, turned the ball over to the Chicago pen and the Phillies promptly greeted reliver Johnny Schmitz and his two replacements with 7 runs and 8 hits. Philadelphia would turn certain defeat into a 9-4 victory and if the Phillies do eventually win their first ever pennant this season, they can look back at yesterday's win as one of the key reason why they finished first. The news was not all rosy for the Phillies who lost yet another starting pitcher to injury. This time it was Orval Grove who went down in the first inning with a serious elbow problem that will put an end to his season. Grove (2-3, 6.45) was filling in for the injured Max Macon (13-6, 2.80) in the Philadelphia rotation. Macon is also likely out for the season. Meanwhile, Hugh Mulcahy (14-13, 3.19) will need to miss at least one more start with shoulder stiffness. Lefty Hoerst, who is 4-1 out of the pen this season, will step into the rotation. There were two other National League games yesterday. Ernie White tossed a 1-hitter as St Louis blanked the New York Giants 5-0. Vince Dimaggio's first inning single was the only blemish on White's record. Enos Slaughter had a single, a double and a triple to go with 3 rbi's for the Cardinals. In the other contest Chuck Workman's 19th homer of the season helped Boston past Brooklyn 5-2. AMERICAN LEAGUE Bob Feller and a pair of Cleveland relievers combined on a 3-hitter as the Indians shaded Boston 2-1. Both Cleveland runs came on a single off the bat of Hal Wagner in the 6th inning. The win stretches the Tribe's lead over Boston to 6 games. In other action Wally Judnich's 3-run homer snapped a 2-2 tie and led St Louis past Washington by a 6-2 score. Al Jurisch became the first 20-game winner in the American League. The Detroit bullpen nearly cost Jurisch the victory but the Tigers hung on to beat Chicago 9-8. Finally in New York, Yankee catcher Mike Garbark's 3rd career homer came with 2-out in the bottom of the ninth and gave the pinstripers a 2-1 win over Philadelphia. Code:

Shute has had some solid early rounds in tournaments this year but is also near the bottom of the money winner list. A couple of more familiar names, Sam Snead and Jay Hebert, are 4 strokes back. Pep, who is a perfect 20-0, made his 4th successful defense of the title he has held since the end of the post-war tournament. Rosa, 25-11-2, is not considered one of the top 20 fighters in the weight class and would be a stretch to make the top 40. Pep is in the middle of a western tour that will see him make 3 or 4 defenses of his title over the next few months. Tonight a pair of top 10 ranked lightweights meet in Philadelphia as Bob Montgomery (10-1) faces Paddy DeMarco (11-5). Montgomery, a Philadelphia native, suffered his only loss in a title fight against world champion Ike Williams in June. This will be his first bout since that fight. DeMarco, from Brooklyn, has not been too active lately as he has not fought since losing a decision to Lulu Constantino last April. CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE Football begins north of the border this weekend with a pair of games in the Canadian Leagues. Minor point re your addition of English and Scottish football TF; three points for a win is a modern invention. Until the early 1980s the points system was two points for a win, one for a draw.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROE BLANKS DODGERS ON 6-HIT SHUTOUT Things may be looking up again for the Pittsburgh Pirates after Preacher Roe earned his second straight victory by pitching a complete game 6-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Brooklyn. Roe started the season 17-2 before dropping 4 straight decisions and going winless in 9 starts. The win over Brooklyn improved his record to 19-6 and allowed the Pirates to remain within 4 games of first place Chicago in the National League. A little over a month ago when Roe and practically the entire Pirates roster was on a tear, it looked like Pittsburgh could run away with the pennant. The Cubs continued their hot play with a 6-4 win over St Louis. Outfielder Bill Nicholson was the hero for Chicago, homering twice and having 4 hits in total. Philadelphia fell 3 games off the pace after the Phillies fell 5-2 in New York. The last place Giants prevented Phillies ace Charley Schanz (19-11) from earning his 20th win of the season. In the other game Chuck Workman hit a 2-run homer in the 8th to help Boston past Cincinnati 6-4. In the American League veteran outfielder Terry Moore drove in 3 runs to lead Cleveland past Boston for the second straight game. Yesterday's score was 5-1 as Warren spahn tossed a complete game 6-hitter to improve his record to 16-11. Earl Johnson (17-9) took the loss for the Red Sox, who now trail Cleveland by 7 games. Elsewhere, Ellis Clary delivered an rbi single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Washington past St Louis 5-4; Jack Boiling had 3 hits including a homer in New York's 10-6 win at Detroit while Philadelphia topped Chicago 3-1. Montgomery was all over DeMarco from the get-go, as he was looking to prove his first career loss in his previous bout meant nothing. Montgomery improves to 11-1, with that lone defeat coming at the hands of world champion Ike Williams in June. For DeMarco it is his second straight defeat and drops his career record to 11-6. Tonight World Lightheavyweight champion Lloyd Marshall faces number one contender Archie Moore in one of two title fights on calendar. Marshall is 23-4-1 in his postwar career while Moore is 32-2. The other title fight is for the European Middleweight belt as Marcel Cerdan (25-5) defends his crown against Cyrille Delanoit (27-10-1) of Belgium. GOLF FURGOL LEADS WESTERN OPEN Ed Furgol is the leader midway through the Western Open being played in Salt Lake City. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL INDIANS STRETCH LEAD IN AMERICAN LEAGUE Pinch-hitter Clyde Kluttz second career homer, a 3-run shot in the top of the 14th inning, gave the Cleveland Indians an 8-5 win over Boston and increased the Indians lead over the second place Red Sox in the American League to 8 games. It was Cleveland's third straight victory over the Red Sox and 5th in a row overall. Boston had taken a 5-3 lead into the 8th inning before the Tribe rallied to tie the game. Eddie Robinson hit a solo homer in the 9th inning at Washington to give the St Louis Browns a 6-5 win over the hometown Senators. The victory keeps the Browns 8.5 games behind the Indians. In other American League action Bill Bevens went the distance allowing just 6 hits to pitch the Yankees past Detroit 5-1 while Harry Danning's 2-run homer in the top of the ninth gave Chicago a come from behind 6-5 win at Philadelphia. NATIONAL LEAGUE HARD-LUCK ERICKSON SUFFERS ANOTHER LOSS FOR CUBS Paul Erickson just can't buy a break. While the rest of the Cubs rotation is on a roll, Erickson is suffering through a 10-17 season. Loss #17 came yesterday when Earl Torgeson hit a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th to give the St Louis Cardinals a 4-2 victory over Chicago. Prior to that homer, Erickson had allowed just 3 hits. Bill Voiselle had a solid effort on the hill for St Louis, improving his record to 15-13 while allowing just 5 hits in 8 innings work. Despite the loss the Cubs finished the month of August with a 22-8 record. The entered the month 6 games behind first place Philadelphia and finish it 2 games ahead of the Phillies. Speaking of the Phillies, they doubled New York 8-4 as Buster Adams and Ron Northey each homered in the victory. Vic Lombardi went the distance for his 15th win of the season. Pittsburgh scored 7 times in the second inning and coasted to an 8-4 victory over Brooklyn. Dodgers starter Don Black walked 6 batters in 1 and 2/3 innings of work. In the other game Joe Medwick had 3 hits and drove in 2 runs as Cincinnati beat Boston 7-6. JURISCH AND WHITE CLAIM PITCHER OF MONTH AWARDS Detroit's Al Jurisch and Ernie White of the St Louis Cardinals were each named pitcher of the month in their respective leagues. Jurisch was 5-0 with a 2.43 era in August as he earned the award for the first time in his career. He was traded to the Tigers from the St Louis Cardinals in July. His former St Louis teammate, Ernie White, was named the National League's top pitcher in August. White was 4-0 with a 1.62 era. It is his second pitcher of the month award in his 7 year career. Another Tiger, outfielder Tommy Henrich earned the top batter nod for August. Henrich hit .387 with 20 rbi's in the month. The 10 year veteran has been named batter of the month on 4 other occassions. The National League winner is Pittsburgh thirdbaseman Bob Elliott. Elliott hit .411 with 3 homers and 17 rbi's in August. Elliott, who wins the award for the second time in his career, is leading the major leagues in hitting this season with a .353 batting average. Code:

One judge scored the 15 round bout dead even while the other two gave Moore a slim victory. With the victory, the 34 year old Moore improves his postwar record to 33-2. Marshall, who claimed the title at the conclusion of the postwar tournament, sees his record slip to 23-5-1. In Paris, Marcel Cerdan of France successfully defended his European Middleweight belt with an unanimous decision over Belgium challenger Cyrille Delanoit. Cerdan is 26-5 and looking to make the trip across the Atlantic for a shot at World Champion Tony Zale. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE SEASONS SWINGS INTO FULL GEAR TODAY A busy day in the National Football League as the first regular season Sunday is upon us. There are 14 games on the schedule including the defending league champion Chicago Bears entertaining Philadelphia in what has to be considered the marquee matchup of the day. Those hoping to see second overall pick Otto *Graham in action will have to wait at least one more week as the Tampa Bay Bucs have announced that Paul *Christman will get the nod at quarterback for their game in St Louis. First overall pick DE George *Savitsky will see plenty of action in the Cowboys opener at Green Bay. The season officially began Thursday with San Diego humiliating New England 36-3. The Monday night contest this weekend has a great quarterback matchup - veteran Sammy *Baugh and the Washington Redskins travel to Detroit to face the Lions and third year signal caller Bob *Waterfield. REGULAR SEASON WEEK 1 SCHEDULE Thursday August 28 San Diego 36 New England 3 TODAY Buffalo at Kansas City Miami at Denver Tennessee at Cleveland Jacksonville at Pittsburgh Indianapolis at Baltimore Houston at Cincinnati Philadelphia at Chicago Dallas at Green Bay NY Giants at Minnesota Tampa at St Louis Atlanta at Arizona Carolina at San Francisco New Orleans at Seattle NY Jets at Oakland Monday September 1 Washington at Detroit CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUES Thanks to a CFL windows based game I have found I will have a little more detailed coverage of Canadian Football. The game is based not specifically on the 1947 season but rather for the years 1950-54. I will take some liberties and begin it in 1947 so that instead of only reporting scores with the Quick Play excel version I was using I will now have full stats to report on. This will also be helpful in that board member created players who do not catch on with an NFL team will have another league in which I can add them to. The link to the game for anyone interested is here: http://www.sportplanet.com/sbb/apfas/apfas.htm Professional football north of the border began yesterday with four games. In the Interprovincial League QB Sam Etcheverry threw two touchdown passes and Alex Webster ran for 202 yards and a pair of scores as Montreal thumped the Ottawa Rough Riders 39-11. In the Western League Winnipeg held on to beat Regina 17-14. The Bombers had lead 17-4 until Regina staged a 4th quarter comeback that fell just short. In the Ontario Rugby Football League the Windsor Royals shaded the Toronto Indians 14-10 while in Hamilton the Wildcats blasted the Sarnia Imperials 29-0. Just curious, but do you have an idea when the SWC preview will be done for college football? Just wondering how my Horned Frogs are going to stack up this year.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : MONDAY SEPTEMBER 1, 1947
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE BEARS RALLY TO BEAT EAGLES 24-20 There is no quarterback in the NFL better than Sid *Luckman at engineering 4th quarter comebacks and yesterday was vintage *Luckman as the Chicago Bears signal caller marched his team 78 yards in the final minutes of the game to pull out a 24-20 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles had a 20-17 lead when Philly kicker CR Evans shanked a 39 yard field goal attempt with 4;27 remaining in regulation. Luckman took over and completed a couple of passes to Ken *Kavanaugh and with a minute to play the Bears had the ball on the Eagle 24 yard line. Rather than settle for a possible game tying field goal to send the contest into overtime, Luckman aired out a touchdown strike that reserve wideout Steve Robinson grabbed in the endzone to give Chicago the win. It was the second time on the day that Luckman and Robinson connected for a major. In addition to throwing a pair of touchdowns, Luckman completed 21 of 29 attempts for 253 yards. The Bears comeback spoiled a terrific effort from Eagles halfback Harley Mitchell, who ran for 147 yards. The top defensive player was 4th year Chicago lineman Bill *Hewitt, who had 3 of the Bears six quarterback sacks on the day. CHIEFS EMBARRASS BILLS 53-13 Ulish Groce threw for over 350 yards and Bruce Jones ran for 133 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs hammered the Buffalo Bills 53-13. Groce picked apart the Bills defense as the Chiefs racked up 515 yards of total offense compared to just 142 for Buffalo. Rookie Demarco Dickinson was a surprise starter at quarterback for the Bills and the man who lead North Carolina to an unbeaten regular season a year ago quickly found out this wasn't the Southern Conference he was playing in. Dickinson completed just 13 of 32 pass attempts and was picked off once. Despite being under almost constant pressure he did manage to avoid getting sacked. 4 lost Buffalo fumbles, including 3 from rookie running back Buddy *Young just compounded the troubles. BACKUPS HELP BROWNS DROP TITANS 37-20 Tony Ellis ran for 132 yards and a pair of Cleveland quarterbacks combined for 307 yards passing as the Browns had little trouble handling the Tennessee Titans. Ellis was given the start despite losing his job to Bill Green in training camp because was nursing an foot injury. Meanwhile Browns starting QB Jeff McDonald left the game with an injury in the second quarter after completing 7 of 9 passes for 108 yards. Louis Webster took over and the Browns offense hardly missed a beat. The Browns also lost cornerback Bob Humphrey with an injury. He and Green may miss a few weeks each but McDonald should be ready to play next week. RAVENS STOP COLTS IN OVERTIME Baltimore defensive end TJ Fiala sacked Indianapolis QB Eric Poppinga in overtime, forcing a fumble that set up the winning score in the Ravens 23-17 victory. Two plays after the fumble Baltimore QB John Foster connected with WR Rick Johnson for the game winning score on a 12 yard pass. The Ravens rallied to tie the game by scoring 14 points in the 4th quarter after the Colts had built a 17-3 lead. ROOKIE QB LEADS PACKERS Frank *Albert passed for over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his NFL debut to lead the Green Bay Packers past Dallas 21-12. Veteran Don *Hutson was Albert's favourite target, making 6 catches for 81 yards. Packers running back Tony *Canadeo also had a solid game, gaining 64 yards rushing and another 35 receiving. First overall pick George *Savitsky made an impression for the Cowboys by recording 2 sacks but the Dallas offense could not mount any sort of attack whatsoever. In other games: Denver withstood a late rally from Miami to beat the Dolphins 31-29. Miami scored 10 points in the final 5 minutes of the game but failed to recover an onside kick with :32 remaining in the game. 6th year pro Gary Chase threw 3 touchdown passes for Denver in just his 4th career start. George Musgrave kicked 4 field goals, including a 20 yarder with less than 5 minutes to play, to give the Minnesota Vikings a 26-23 victory over the New York Giants. Legendary defensive back Booker Hasselbeck had 10 tackles, an interception and 2 forced fumbles but it wasn't enough as his Arizona Cardinals fell 23-16 to Atlanta. Running back Antowain Anderson rushed for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Falcons, who got the victory despite having 5 turnovers including 3 interceptions thrown by QB Arnie *Herber. Judging by Sunday's effort from Paul *Christman it may be a while before rookie quarterback sensation Otto *Graham gets off the Tampa Bay bench. *Christman completed 23 of 35 passes for 372 yards to lead the Bucs past St Louis 29-26. He also threw 2 touchdown passes include the game winner to RB Keyshawn Smith midway through the fourth quarter. Cornerback Todd Elwell had 3 interceptions and backup QB Mike McNeil passed for 3 touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers tamed the Jacksonville Jaguars 39-7. McNeil was forced to take over when Tom Friede suffered a concussion on the first series of the game. Walt Williams ran for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns plus he had a 57 yard reception in Houston's 24-10 victory over Cincinnati. Three fourth quarter touchdowns including a pair of Steve *Van Buren runs gave the New York Jets a come from behind 31-17 victory over the Raiders in Oakland. In a matchup featuring two of the game's premier backs, Van Buren outgained Johnny Cushing (127 yards to 79) and scored 2 touchdowns compared to none for Cushing. The Carolina Panthers took a 17-0 first quarter lead and cruised to a 23-14 win over the 49ers in San Francisco. The 49ers ended up with nearly twice as many net yards as the Panthers but Carolina managed to build a lead thanks to a couple of San Francisco turnovers. The game proved costly for the Panthers who lost second round pick MLB Gary Reich for possibly the season with a neck injury. Running back Keith Meade could also miss a couple of weeks with an injury. Meade, who gained over 1500 yards two years ago, was limited to just 5 games last season because of injuries. Ryan Boyette threw for 225 yards and ran for 41 more and a pair of touchdowns to lift New Orleans past Seattle 24-13. Saints running back Todd Berger also scored a touchdown and rushed for 116 yards. Heisman Trophy winner Glenn *Davis gained 72 yards on 7 carries and scored a touchdown for the Seahawks but second year pro Marion *Motley struggled, gaining just 8 yards on 11 carries. Motley had some decent games in the preseason but struggled in the opener just as he did most of last season. GOLF THREE-WAY PLAYOFF NEEDED TO DECIDE WESTERN OPEN Sam Snead birdied the 17th hole to pull even with Byron Nelson and Jimmy Demaret forcing a 3-way playoff to decide the winner of this year's Western Open event at Salt Lake City, Utah. Snead made up 9 strokes on Saturday's leader Nelson, by shooting an 8 under par 64. Demaret shot 68 and actually had sole possession of the lead momentarily before he took a bogey on the 16th. Nelson, trying to earn his first winner's paycheque of the year, got into trouble early Sunday and never fully recovered, settling for a 1 over par 73. Gene Sarazen nearly made it a 4 player playoff but his birdie putt on 18 lipped out and he finished one stroke behind. The playoff will be an 18 hole stroke play contest beginning Monday morning. If there is still a tie for the lead following today's round sudden death will apply. Code:

The loss drops Boston to third place, a half game behind St Louis and 9 full games back of the Indians. The Browns got a pair of hits and 3 rbi's from Wally Judnich in a 7-3 victory over Washington. Other games had Max Lanier toss a 2-hit shutout as the New York Yankees blanked Detroit 4-0 while Frank Demaree's 10th inning sacrifice fly gave Philadelphia a 5-4 win at Chicago. In the National League the three front-runners all were victorious so the Cubs enter their final 3 games of the year against the Phillies leading Philadelphia by2 games. Yesterday, Phil Rizzuto had 3 hits and a pair of rbi's as Ed Head won his 16th game of the season in a 6-4 Chicago victory. The Phillies kept pace by rapping out 17 hits in an 8-1 win over New York. Buster Adams and Mickey Witek each had 4 hits for the Phillies. Cliff Melton earned his 15th victory of the year in Pittsburgh's 8-1 win over Brooklyn. Ralph Kiner, Bob Elliott and Bill Salkeld all homered for the Bucs. Joe Medwick hit a 3-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to give Cincinnati a 9-6 victory over Boston in the only other National League game. Code:

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE LIONS ROAR IN WIN OVER WASHINGTON The Detroit Lions had a much easier time than they could have ever hoped for as they manhandled the Washington Redskins with a 33-18 Monday Night Football victory. Lions QB Bob *Waterfield showed that he may be ready to take that giant step to join the game's elite signal callers with a tremendous performance against Washington. Waterfield completed 20-of-29 passes for 290 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the other side of the field veteran Sammy *Baugh failed to survive the first quarter as he left the game with a lower leg injury. Prior to leaving Baugh was intercepted twice and completed just two of 6 passes. Both interceptions led to Detroit touchdowns as the Lions built up a 17-0 lead and never looked back. Fred Johnson scored both Detroit touchdowns in the opening quarter, the first on a 1-yard plunge and the other one on a 4 yard swing pass. The Lions running back would add another score in the third quarter and finished the evening with 73 yards rushing and 76 yards receiving. Both teams were hit by the injury bug. In addition to the loss of Baugh, the Redskins also saw second round pick CB Tommy *Harmon suffer an ankle injury that may cost him his entire rookie season. Starting outside linebacker Chuck Henry was also injured but he is expected to return next week. Detroit will be without starting offensive guard Ernie Kosar for up to 10 weeks after he left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PIRATES AND PHILLIES CLOSE GAP ON CUBS While the Cleveland Indians are running away with the American League pennant, the race in the National League looks like it could go right down to the wire. The Philadelphia Phillies moved back to within one game of the Chicago Cubs after posting a 5-1 victory over the Cubs in the opener of a 3 game set in Philly. The Phillies jumped all over Cubs ace Vern Olsen (21-7, 2.85) in the first inning plating 4 runs thanks to doubles from Del Ennis, Ray Sanders and John O'Neil. Phillies hurler Lefty Hoerst (5-1, 1.69), making his first start of the season due to multiple injuries in the rotation, made the lead stand up as he 7-hit the Cubs. The Pittsburgh Pirates also benefitted from the Phillies win as the Bucs blanked Cincinnati 3-0 on a Vic Raschi 3-hitter. The performance gave the rookie pitcher his first career shutout and moved the Pirates to within 2 games of the frontrunning Cubs. In other action St Louis scored 5 times in the 8th inning to beat New York 6-3 while Whitey Kurowski drove in 3 runs as Boston doubled Brooklyn by the same 6-3 count. AMERICAN LEAGUE The Cleveland Indians keep finding ways to win ballgames. Yesterday the Tribe blew an 8-3 lead against Washington and trailed 9-8 after the Senators scored in the top of the 11th. However, with two out in the bottom of the inning Mickey Rocco and Jim Gleeson each singled and then both scored on a pinch-hit from Terry Moore giving the Indians a 10-9 win and keeping their lead over Boston at 9 games. The Red Sox got 3 homers, including a grand slam from catcher Roy Partee, in a 9-3 drubbing of the St Louis Browns. The win moved the Red Sox a half game ahead of the Browns and into second place. Elsewhere, shortstop Sig Gryska had 4 hits to help Chicago past the Philadelphia Athletics 9-3. LOHRMAN AND MEDWICK CLAIM PLAYER OF WEEK HONOURS Cleveland pitcher Bill Lohrman was named the American League player of the week after going 2-0 with a 1.06 era in the past 7 days. Lohrman, who counted a shutout as one of his victories last week, is 15-2 with a major league low era of 1.55. He missed a month and a half after suffering a shoulder injury at the end of May. The National League player of the week is Cincinnati outfielder Joe Medwick. Medwick was on a tear last week, batting .522 with 9 rbi's. The outburst at the plate improved his average for the season to .348 and he is battling with Pittsburgh's Bob Elliott for the batting crown. Medwick led the NL in hitting last year with a .323 average. Code:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW MICHIGAN IN NATIONAL TITLE HUNT AGAIN Only a loss to National Champion Army prevented a perfect season for the University of Michigan Wolverines who are once again the class of the Western Conference. The Wolverines breezed through the conference schedule without a scratch and that will likely be the case again this year. Graduation hit the Michigan defense hard but the offense looks loaded with seniors like QB Daryll xRansford, RB Bump *Elliott, TE Terrell Williams and WR Bob *Mann. Illinois, which finished last year ranked 15th, will challenge Ohio State for second place in the conference and a bowl bid. The Illini have veteran QB Perry *Moss and a strong defensive front anchored by Les *Bingaman. Ohio State will rely on senior QB Benjamin xWoosley to carry the offense. Center Jack *Duncan and LB Dick *Flanagan will also be leaders for the Buckeyes. Code:

Thanks, yeah, 1947 wasn't a real great year, although we did beat the Aggies and Sooners, but I guess the Longhorn loss took out hte momentum. Maybe with my skill on the team I can change that

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BONHAM NEARLY PERFECT FOR YANKEES Tiny Bonham pitched a 1-hit gem leading the New York Yankees to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. Bonham was as close to perfection as one could get without throwing a perfect game. He allowed just one baserunner, a second inning single to Paul Campbell, but faced the minimum 27 batters because Campbell was erased on a double play. For the season Bonham is 14-15 with a 2.79 era. Yankee outfielder Joe Gallagher drove in a pair of the New York runs with a first inning single. Russ Derry's pinch-hit rbi single in the bottom of the 11th inning gave Boston a 3-2 victory over the St Louis Browns. Red Sox starter Earl Johnson held the Browns scoreless through 8 before St Louis evened the game with a 9th inning rally off the Boston bullpen. The win moves Boston to within 8 games of first place Cleveland after the Indians were blanked 4-0 by Washington. Red Barrett (11-10, 4.34) went the distance for the winners while Warren Spahn (16-12, 3.24) took the loss. The Tribe actually outhit Washington 8-7 but a pair of Senator homeruns from Phil Cavarretta (.258,14,65) and Mike Chartak (.296,10,59) proved to be the difference. In the other American League game Detroit trimmed Chicago 4-3. Hal Trosky had 3 hits in the contest for Detroit including a first inning single off of Bill Fleming for the 2000th of his career. CUBS TOP PHILLIES Back-to-back-to-back rbi doubles in the 5th inning from Eddie Waitkus, Bill Nicholson and Ken O'Dea lifted the Chicago Cubs past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 in National League action. Hank Wyse (13-9, 2.50) and Charlie Schanz (19-12, 3.45) each allowed 8 hits in going the distance but Phillies ace Schanz was denied his 20th victory of the season. The Cubs lead over Philadelphia is back to 2 games. Pittsburgh is 3 off the pace after the Pirates were hammered 12-1 by Cincinnati. Joe Dimaggio(.239,19,69) had 3 hits including a pair of homers to lead the Reds while Joe Medwick (.352,10,77) had a 4-hit game. Medwick, with 19 hits in his last 8 games, is now dead even with the Pirates Bob Elliott in the batting average race. Pittsburgh's Preacher Roe (19-7, 3.68) took the loss and will have to wait a few more days before getting another chance at his first 20 win season. In other action Marty Marion's 8th inning homerun snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled the St Louis Cardinals to a 4-1 win over the Giants in New York, while in Brooklyn Pee Wee Reese singled in his third rbi of the game in the bottom of the 10th to give the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Boston. The University of Texas had a terrible time with conference games last season but the Longhorns look ready to tear up the SWC this time around. With Heisman Trophy candidate Bobby *Layne at quarterback and Joe *Baumgardner and Al *Lawler in the backfield the Texas offense will be a force. The defense is also strong with Max *Baumgardner and Jim *Canady leading the way. When it is all said and done it would not be a huge surprise if Texas ends the season as the National Champion. Arkansas, a greatly improved SMU squad, and Texas A&M will battle it out for second place in the division. The Razorbacks are led by running back Aubrey *Fowler while the big name for SMU is sophomore QB/RB Doak *Walker, who was a high school teammate of Texas QB Bobby *Layne. Do not count out Rice even though the Owls lost several key players while Texas Christian could also be a sleeper pick depending on how much success QB Scott xThompson has. TCU also has one of the best linebackers in the conference in senior Cornell Jones. Code:

CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUES BOMBERS BEAT GREEN RIDERS 24-22 The Winnipeg Blue Bombers edged the Roughriders in Regina 24-22 thanks to an impressive performance from running back Gary James. He scored all 3 Winnipeg majors, two of them rushing and the third on a 6 yard touchdown pass from Jack Jacobs midway through the fourth quarter. James gained 100 yards rushing on the day but was second on his team to Leo Lewis, who rushed for 134 yards. It was the Bombers second win in less than a week over Regina. On Saturday the Bombers prevailed 17-14 in the season opener for both teams in Winnipeg. Akira, with a record of 16-4-2, becomes the new World Champion after Paterson's reign lasted just one fight. Paterson is 21-3 for his career. After the victory Akira's manager announced they would honor the tenative contract that Paterson's camp had to defend the title against Frenchman Valentin Angelmann on October 9th. However, they plan to switch the venue from London to somewhere in Japan. On the undercard Teddy Gardner, the man Paterson beat to become world champion, had little trouble winning a unanimous 10-round decision over Frenchman Honore Pratesi to improve his record to 18-3-1. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL CUBS BLAST PHILLIES 8-0 : TAKE 3 GAME LEAD The Chicago Cubs stretched their lead atop the National League standings to 3 games afer hammering Philadelphia 8-0 in the final meeting of the season between the 2 clubs. Paul Erickson (11-17, 4.72) and reliever Bob Chipman combined on the 5-hit shutout. In other National League action rookie Earl Torgeson hit his 16th homer of the season and 2B George Scharein had 4 hits as St Louis pounded the Giants 13-6. In Brooklyn, Steve Gromek got his 17th win of the season as the Boston Braves dropped the Dodgers 7-4. Brooklyn starter Don Black took the loss to fall to 4-18 on the season. Just two games in the American League and neither involved pennant contenders. In Detroit, Tommy Henrich homered for the second straight day to help the Tigers past Chicago 9-3. In the other game the Yankees topped Philadelphia 9-5. The A's lost starting pitcher Mort Cooper for the season with a back injury. The 34 year old Cooper was 6-12 with a 4.83 era on the season. The most impressive effort came from Rocky Marciano. The 24 year old from Brockton, Mass. improved his professional record to 2-0 with his second straight TKO, this one in the second round over New Haven's John Edwards. Another heavyweight, Brooklyn teenager J.T. xCampbell improved to 3-0-1 as a pro with a 6th round knockout of Canadian Buddy Fisher. xCampbell was in complete control of the bout and it was clearly the best effort of his short pro career. Bronx heavyweight Roland LaStarza improved to 2-0 as a pro but looked very shaky in earning a 6-round split decision over Connecticut's Eldridge Eatman. Finally 21 year old welterweight Carmen Basilio needed less than 2 minutes to knockout his opponent, Elliott Throop. Basilio, who was forced to settle for a majority draw in his pro debut 3 weeks ago, made sure he kept the judges out of this decision. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Previewing the Independants NOTRE DAME PRESEASON NUMBER ONE The Notre Dame Fighting Irish enter the 1947 season as the number one ranked team in the nation and with good reason. The Irish suffered just one loss last season, a 16-7 defeat against undefeated national champion Army. While the Black Knights lost most of their offense including Heisman Trophy winner Glenn *Davis and quarterback Arnold *Tucker to graduation and the NFL, the Irish have plenty of returning starters. Senior QB Johnny *Lujack is a Heisman Trophy candidate and the leader of an offense that includes HB Fred *Evans and WR James xDavis. Tackle Ziggy *Czarobski is one of the best offensive lineman in the college ranks. As good as the Irish offense is, their defense is even better with 4 potential 1st round NFL draft picks including linemen Bob *Dove and George *Sullivan, LB Bill Porcher and CB Corwin *Clatt. Penn State, Army, Rutgers and Pennsylvania are other independants who made the preseason top 20. The Nittany Lions have a strong ground attack led by HB David xHunter and blockers John *Nolan and Steve *Suhey. Pennsylvania also relies on it's running game with back Skippy *Minisi being the key component. Army should once again be a solid team but the losses are just too great for the school to contend for a second straight National Championship. Code:

The 8 team event will begin Thursday November 6th and run through the weekend. 1 NEW YORK UNIVERSITY (25-7) - A dominant team that had it's tournament hopes last year derailed in their conference tournament by a season-ending injury to center Dolph *Schayes. Schayes, who averaged 14.9 ppg and 11.6 rpg as a sophomore is a potential National Player of the Year candidate as a junior this season. Fellow juniors SG Slater *Martin and PF Matthew Blake make this squad a potential preseason number one. Blake made the All-Eastern Independant Conference team a year ago. 2 WASHINGTON (20-14) - The Huskies lost a couple of key players to the NBA but should be a strong team this season with juniors David *Johnson and Marshall Hawkins having another year of experience under their belts. Will likely be a preseason top 20 and challenge Oregon for the PCC North title. 3 PENN STATE (11-19) - A terrible season a year ago but the Nittany Lions should be much improved with 4 returning starters and a decent crop of freshmen. Will have a hard time surpassing Notre Dame for the Midwest Independant Conference title. 4 VMI (22-11) - All 5 starters are back as well as a couple of key reserves. A veteran club with 10 players that are either in their junior or senior season. Not a top 25 team but may be the class of the Southern Conference. Center Raj Lockwood was All-Conference as a junior last year. 5 USC (31-7 NCAA runner-up) - After a spirited run all the way to the NCAA title game this may be a rebuilding year for the Trojans as 10 of the 13 players on their roster are freshman or sophomores. Senior center William *Towery, who averaged 14.8 ppg and 11.3 rpg and was named All-PCC South, is the only returning starter. 6 KANSAS (16-15) - Senior PG Otto *Schnellbacher captains not only the Jayhawks hoops squad but also the football team where he plays WR. He was All-Big 8 a year ago and is one of 4 returning starters with their eyes on getting Kansas it's first Big 8 conference title since 1942-43. 7 RICHMOND (30-8, NCAA rd of 16) - Senior guard Dick *Schrider has led the Spiders to two straight sweet 16 appearances. If freshmen center Nic Ducklow and guard Austin Dunn can adapt quickly the Spiders may challenge for the Mid-Land Conference title. 8 HOUSTON (24-9) - Just two starters return for the defending Southland Conference champions. The Cougars made their 3rd ever NCAA tournament appearance last year but have yet to win a game. It may be a struggle to win the conference title this season with All-Conference forward Cody Hernandez and center Robert Lewis both graduated. The Hawaii Classic is one of three preseason tournaments with the other two being the Alaska Shootout and the Preseason NIT. The field for the Alaska Shootout will be announced in the next couple of weeks while the NIT will feature the following schools: Preseason NIT Seeds 1 Indiana 2 Holy Cross 3 California 4 Oklahoma A&M 5 New Orleans 6 Miami Ohio 7 Wyoming 8 Auburn CANADIAN FOOTBALL ENGLISH FIRST DIVISION Parker ran for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Edmonton Eskimos past the Calgary Stampeders 22-19 in the season opener for both teams. Both teams return to action Saturday when there is a full slate of games in all 3 leagues. Code:
