The Red Sox reclaimed the AL lead with a 14-9 showing in June. Despite having the best team batting average and the 2nd best team ERA in baseball, the White Sox dipped to second after going 10-13 this month. St. Louis went 15-10 to climb to within 4.5 games of the lead. Detroit went 15-9 to climb above .500 and back into the race.

The NL is also a 4-team race so far. Currently, the Cubs and Giants are tied for first. The Cardinals are 2.5 games back, while the Reds stumbled to 4.5 games back.

Batters of the Month - a Pair of Ancestors!

AL - Thomas Strasser, CF, Cleveland Indians - He hit .373 with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored. Just goes to prove that the Indians should keep him in the lineup somehow.

NL - Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago Cubs - He hit an amazing .495 with 17 RBI, 19 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Matthew Hoefling, Detroit Tigers - He was 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 2 shutouts. He has won 14 consecutive decisions!

NL - Hugh Tiedt, Chicago Cubs - He was 5-1 with a 2.21 ERA including 2 shutouts.

Philadelphia (N) 29 46 .387 16.0
Boston (N) 28 47 .373 17.0

Ancestors:

Heinrich "The German" Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .218 with 9 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy went 1-5 with a 3.12 ERA in 6 starts.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .376 with 13 RBI, 15 runs scored and his first 2 home runs of the season.

Harry "The Haymaker" Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry was named BOTM (see above). He currently leads the NL batting race with a whopping .421 average.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert went 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 6 starts.

John "Pops" Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .269 with 13 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Jean-Francois "Flaky" Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .276 with 7 RBI and 11 runs scored before tearing an abdominal muscle on June 22nd. He will be out until late July.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .451 with 4 RBI and 10 runs scored after returning to the lineup on June 14th.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned went 2-2 with a 2.44 ERA in 6 starts including a shutout.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Will hit .256 with 4 RBI, 14 runs scored and 9 stolen bases.

Thomas Strasser, CF, Cleveland - Thomas was named BOTM (see above). He proved once again that he should be an everyday player. Credit the Indians for finding him a place. He has been a regular at first base, left field and now center field in his career.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) - Pudge hit .230 with 5 RBI and 6 runs scored. He has still thrown out 37% of attempted base stealers, which is the 5th best mark in the major leagues among regulars.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia (A) - Nagel went 1-3 with a 3.52 ERA in 6 starts.

Horst "Harry" Nagel, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .259 with 6 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Donald "Duckie" Andrew, 2B, Cincinnati - In a very ugly incident, Duckie was hit by a pitch on June 28th against the Cubs and suffered a skull fracture. He may miss two months, and with the season probably being cut short because of the war, he may not play again this season.

Ben "Rabbi" Baum, CF, Philadelphia (A) - Ben hit .289 with 14 RBI, 12 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Bourbon Allen, SP, Boston (N) - Allen pitched in just 2 games this month - both in relief. In just 1 1/3 innings, he allowed 4 hits and 3 runs, resulting in a gaudy 20.26 ERA on the month. However, despite his poor stats, coaches have noticed that he is progressing well, especially for a player who would probably be in AAA if it were not for the war.

The Red Sox began to pull away from the rest of the AL this month, going 18-10. Second baseman Genaro "Tito" Nunez leads the team and the league with a .398 average. The White Sox have slipped to third and were further hampered by the loss of #2 starter Eddie Whelan to an arm injury. He will be out until late August. Cleveland went 16-12 to pull into 2nd Place, but they still fell further behind Boston.

The Giants went 19-10 and took sole possession of the NL. The Cubs went 13-15 and slipped 5.5 games back after being tied for the lead at the beginning of July. They lost their top starter, Hugh Tiedt (17-7, 2.70) until late August. The Cardinals, however, went 19-8 and pulled a half-game closer.

The powers-that-be in baseball decided to stop the season prior to Labor Day because of the war in Europe, so there is now just one month left.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Patrick Seifried, 1B, New York Yankees - He hit .423 with 14 RBI and 15 runs scored. This is his first BOTM since 1913 - the year before he left for the Federal League. He has won 7 BOTM's in his career.

NL - Whitey Kohse, SS, New York Giants - He hit .373 with 24 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Rob Greenwald, St. Louis Browns - He was 6-1 with a 1.71 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Cecil Tan, Cincinnati Reds - He was 5-1 with a 1.34 ERA including 2 shutouts.

September 1, 1918

The season was cut short to end before Labor Day, but the pennant races went right down to the last minute. The Red Sox began August with an 8-game losing streak and Cleveland climbed right back into contention. Going into the last series of the season, Cleveland faced the dangerous White Sox while Boston hosted the Athletics. Boston lost 2-of-3 games, and on the last day of the season Cleveland could have tied for the AL lead with a win. After winning the first two games against Chicago, Cleveland stumbled on the final day, losing 4-1 and finishing 1-game behind the Red Sox.

Fans in Boston cheered their Sox, who won the pennant for the first time ever! The Red Sox had long been one of the lowliest franchises in major league history. They had only had 2 winning seasons in the league's 17-year history. The last winning season they had was way back in 1905 when they were 79-75. This team had never finished higher than 3rd Place and they were coming off three consecutive 74-80 seasons. Now only 3 teams have never won a pennant - Detroit in the AL and Brooklyn and Cincinnati in the NL. Congratulations to the Beantown faithful!

The National League pennant race was just as exciting with St. Louis and New York battling. The two teams squared off at the beginning of the month, and the Cardinals took 2-of-3 games. During the final week of the season, St. Louis was swept by Brooklyn and they lost their first game against the Cubs. Meanwhile, the Giants struggled against Pittsburgh, but they won their first two games against the Phillies in the final series of the season and clinched their first pennant since 1907.

World Series

The Giants are a team built on offense. For several years they have hit the most home runs in the big leagues. That may be partly due to the Polo Grounds where they play their home games. That field favors hitters, and players with any power have an increased chance of hitting a ball over the fences. They have several big hitters such as first baseman Jared Jarry, centerfielder Campbell Ditty and rightfielder "Moneybags" Tatum. Their picthing staff is better than they appear statistically because they play at the Polo Grounds, and they are led by Will Stafford. His 24-4 record and 2.83 ERA are big reasons why the Giants were successful this season.

The Red Sox have one of the top power hitters in the game's history, first baseman Michael Wrightson, but he was lost for the season with a broken ankle on July 6th. Outside of him, they have no real power threats to take advantage of the Polo Grounds. This team is only among the best in one category - stolen bases. They are actually among the worst in several pitching categories. The Red Sox are one of the best examples we have ever seen of winning as a team. They manage to score runs when needed and their weak pitching staff has been clutch whenever necessary. They have one of the best pure hitters in the game, second baseman Genaro Nunez. Nunez won his 3rd AL batting title this year by hitting .402 - setting a new AL record and becoming just the second AL player to ever eclipse that lofty mark. He has led the AL in OPS and stolen bases in 4 of the past 5 seasons. Boston's pitching staff hinges on the performance of 40-year-old Will Haggan, who has had one of the finest seasons in his long career. He went 21-9 with a 2.82 ERA, his best ERA since 1912. He has won 20+ games 8 times and won the World Series with the cross-town Braves in 1910, lending that experience to his fellow Sox teammates. His 21 wins this season placed him first on the all-time wins list with 291.

My Prediction: The Red Sox pitching staff is too weak and inexperienced after Haggan. Their offense is questionable. Meanwhile, the Giant offense packs a wallop and their pitching is quite underrated. I expect the Giants to win in 5 games.

ALL WEB PAGES ARE UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES AND WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES...

WORLD SERIES

Boston 2 - New York 1: A two-run 5th inning was all the Red Sox needed to win their first World Series game. Will Haggan pitched a 5-hit, 1-run complete game for the win.

Boston 0 - New York 2: This was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the 8th when New York rightfielder "Moneybags" Tatum hit a 2-out 2-run single off Boston rookie David Duncan to give the Giants the lead. New York starter Will Stafford pitched a 4-hit shutout for the win.

New York 5 - Boston 6: After being down 4-1, the Red Sox scored 2 runs in the 5th and then 3 runs in the 7th. With two outs in the top of the 9th, New York's Jared Jarry, who had been relegated to a pinch hitter by a pulled groin muscle, hit a single giving the Giants runners at the corners in a 1-run game. However, "Moneybags" Tatum grounded out to end the game.

New York 15 - Boston 3: The Giants pounded Boston starter Will Haggan for 12 runs in just 5 1/3 innings en route to a 15-3 shellacking of the Sox.

New York 0 - Boston 5: Boston's David Duncan pitched a 6-hit shutout to place the Red Sox just one win away from a World Series championship. This was the 3rd game in which the vaunted Giants offense was held to 2 or fewer runs.

Boston 9 - New York 3: The Red Sox offense dominated this game, scoring 9 runs off 15 hits and 3 walks. Meanwhile, starting pitcher James Petersen put together a solid performance, allowing just 3 runs in the complete game win.

Genaro "Tito" Nunez was named World Series MVP. He hit .440 in the series with 4 RBI and 6 runs scored.

WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING ALL PLAYER PAGES...

If you'll notice, I am using actual photos from 20's-era players for new rookies beginning this season, except for this year's relief pitchers... You can see the first ones by viewing this season's draft log...

1919

After many teams lost money due to the shortened season last year, baseball owners agreed to schedule only 140 games per team for the 1919 season. They were uncertain over the economy's future. The World Series, however, would be lengthened to 9 games. Also making news was the fact that two New York Giants, Lemuel Ashman and George Knapp, were barred from baseball for trying to enduce players to throw games for money.

In lighter news, the National League voted to ban the use of spitballs by all new pitchers. The ban was expanded to include the use of all foreign substances, such as saliva, resin, talcum powder and paraffin, as well as any other alterations to balls (shine or emery) by pitchers.

The White Sox are favored to win the AL despite finishing 3rd last season. With players like "Jock" Gillis returning from military service, Chicago is primed for a title run. Boston still has a chance to repeat, but the AL should be extremely competitive this season. Cleveland and Detroit should be major participants in the pennant race. Both Philadelphia and St. Louis have very talented teams, if only they can translate that talent into wins. Even Washington and New York have solid teams this season.

The NL could also have a tight race, but the early favorites are New York and Chicago. Brooklyn, Cincinnati and St. Louis should each be key in the pennant race, while Philadelphia hopes to compete. Pittsburgh and Boston will almost certainly finish at the bottom of the league once again.

Key Retirees:

Jassen Nelson, SP, Detroit Tigers 1901-1906, New York Yankees 1906-1917

Nelson was one of the finest pitchers of his generation. He was a 6-time 20-game winner, recording a career high 27 wins in 1904 at age 26. He won 3 World Series with the Yankees (1908, 1911, 1912), and he was the series MVP in 1908. He won the 1909 POTY Award and 7 Gold Gloves. He threw a perfect game against the Red Sox in 1916, just the second perfect game in baseball history, putting the finishing touch on a masterful career. He retired with a 274-196 record (tied for the 2nd Most Wins All-Time), 2.66 ERA (12th Best All-Time), 2016 K's (3rd Most All-Time), 412 complete games (4th Most All-Time) and 51 shutouts (8th Most All-Time).

"Razor" Lawley, CF, Washington Senators 1901-1918

Lawley was the cornerstone of Washington's offense since the team began in 1901. He won 5 Gold Gloves and was the 1904 BOTY. He was also part of Washington's only World Series championship in 1913. He finished his career with a .290 average, 2574 hits (3rd Most All-Time), 369 doubles (8th Most All-Time), 344 triples (3rd Most All-Time), 1094 RBI (Most All-Time), 1195 runs (4th Most All-Time), 783 walks (14th Most All-Time), 335 stolen bases (15th Most All-Time). He is one of only 5 players with over 2500 hits, one of only 6 players with over 300 triples and one of only 6 players with over 1100 runs scored. He is in the top 15 in almost every major offensive career category, highlighted by the fact that he has the most RBI of all-time.

Two notable players were unable to return to professional baseball after suffering injuries in the war. Rayford Suszek, the former backup catcher for Cleveland, was initially expected to challenge the aging Whiskey Allen for the starter's job. Keven Lehan, who patrolled the outfield for the Atletics, Browns and most recently, the Robins, is unable to return to the National League. He had a .306 career average and 1089 hits after 7 seasons as a full-time starter.

Ancestors Added

Whiskey Allen, Jr., SP, Boston (N) Braves

Whiskey is the second talented son of Cleveland catcher Whiskey, Sr. Interestingly enough, Junior will pitch on the same Braves staff as his older brother Bourbon. Junior is not expected to be a starter like his brother as of opening day, but he should get several opportunities to start this season. The Braves have some talented young players in their organization, and yet they still are a long way off from being competitive. However, the presence of the Allen brothers will be a major key in leading this organization to respectability.

The AL was a dogfight in April, but the Browns currently lead the league by a half-game over the White Sox and Senators. Boston started slowly, but they also lost two key players to injury, third baseman Calvin Page and starting pitcher Eric Harrison, who missed last season while in the military.

St. Louis went just 16-13 in May and slipped out of first for a day, but on the last day of May, they retook the AL lead over the White Sox. Washington is just 2.5 games back, and they are the only other AL team currently over .500. Boston continues to struggle, and it is beginning to look like last season truly was a one-time magical season for Red Sox fans.`

Brooklyn maintained a lead in the NL despite going just 14-14 in May. New York stumbled at 13-14, and the Cubs were just 14-14, but Cincinnati was the story. The Reds went 22-7 in May and pulled into 2nd Place, just a half-game behind the Robins.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Jed Burke, 2B, Chicago White Sox - He hit .394 with 24 RBI and 20 runs scored.

NL - Jared Jarry, 1B, New York Giants - Jarry won his second consecutive BOTM Award by hitting .364 with 21 RBI, 20 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - Murphy won back-to-back awards by going 5-1 with a 1.24 ERA.

NL - Tim "Presto" Lopresto, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 5-2 with a 1.41 ERA and 1 shutout.
