In a perfect world, MLB would institute Throwback Thursdays, where on any given Thursday, you would see teams wearing (modern-materials versions of) uniforms from their team's past, a new throwback every year.

This would

a) make Thursday, the least desirable day of the week, somewhat special
b) provide MLB with a steady stream of nostalgia-driven cash, as ardent fans buy a new memory every damn year
c) make sure to keep stupid ideas out of the picture, unless a team wants to junk its MAIN uniforms and do something bizarre.

But the Mets visit Houston and it's Racing Stripes vs Shooting Stars on Thursday, before returning to normal service the rest of the week.

This will of course never happen, given that 1) Manly Manfred is evil 2) ad execs and design consultants need to justify their salaries and 3) I never get what I want.

But let me dream, okay?

Jhonny Pereda, a backup catcher pitching in a lopsided game, struck out Shohei Ohtani the other day. Watch him flinch when Ohtani swings, like "Whoa. If this guy hits it and it's a comeback liner, I'm dead!"

But Ohtani whiffed and Pereda kept the ball. I would have done the same.

If there is one thing in this world that I know nothing about (only one?), it's betting on sports. God be praised.

But perhaps you will enjoy or glean knowledge from this ESPN article:

Why the 2025 Colorado Rockies are every bookmaker's nightmare

From what I can tell, sports bookies cannot set the odds on the Rockies high enough for people to bet on them (and lose). Bettors are preferring to "fade" the Rockies (I think that means betting against them) and accepting the lower payouts en masse.

Hence outfits like FanDuel are losing money on the Rockies. My heart bleeds for them.

If the Rockies finish the year 72-37 (.661) they would reach .500.

Colorado run diff is -171. The combined run dif of the other 4 in the NL is -195.

Thanks to a recent donation by the E. 161st St. Benevolent Society, the Rox finish the first third of the season 9-45, which easily projects to 27-135 for the whole length. Still south of the Spiders, but within reach

It will take a little more (34-74) to reach the "don't talk about us" levels of 43-119, but that seems doable. 42-66 to get to 51-111, my standard level of "merely terrible", would be harder work, but still not entirely out of question.

Keep hope alive, Pile!

(OTOH, to avoid losing 100 games on the season, Colorado would need to be bang-on .500 from here on out. 54-54. Doesn't seem likely.)

The colorful pattern on the uniform represents the various neighborhoods of Baltimore. It was designed on the inside -- a first for an MLB team -- as a showcase of the city’s colorful interior, a contrast from the grayscale exterior that represents a “surface-level view” that some may have of the city. Those vibrant colors symbolize the uniqueness of the various aspects of Baltimore.
Just shove it.

I think that, if the 2024 World Series were replayed today, the result would be largely the same. Maybe a sweep this time.

The half-century of losses for the Rockies is full after getting swept by the Metsies.

Reminder: it's June 1.

9-50.

I watched the Saturday game of the week, had to be 60 years ago, where the pitcher slipped on the mound, and slammed the ball about ten feet in front of the mound.

It sailed toward the plate about 50 mph, and looked as big as a watermelon.

The Fat Kid (Harmon Killebrew) muscled up..as if he needed to...and hit it 450+ to dead center. Everyone on the field was backing up when he crushed it. It remains an enduring memory, to this day.
