1928 World Series results
1928 World Series: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Cincinnati Reds
Results Game 1, October 4th, 1928, Redland Field Reds Escape Athletics in 10, Now Lead Series 1-0 A clutch 10th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a walk-off win over the Philadelphia Athletics and a 1-0 lead in the World Series at Redland Field. Young catcher Jimmie Foxx, 20, earned kudos after he went 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the tenth. With two out, Foxx hit a fastball from Vic Sorrell for a run-scoring single. The Reds, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win. "Our guys just had that look of determination," said winning manager Sadie McMahon. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Reds lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 5th, 1928, Redland Field Philadelphia Win Evens Series at 1 Behind a bravura effort from starter Sheriff Blake, the Philadelphia Athletics topped the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 5-2 and got their first win in the 1928 World Series. Blake threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball for the Athletics. The win moves Philadelphia into a 1-1 tie with Cincinnati. In the top of the fourth, Philadelphia third baseman Freddie Lindstrom had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and two out, Lindstrom stroked a 2-run single to center. It made the score 4-0, Philadelphia. For the game, he was 3-5 with 3 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. "I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Lindstrom. The next game is set to be played for October 7th, 1928 at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Series tied at 1-1 Game 3, October 7th, 1928, Shibe Park Road Win Lifts Cincinnati to 2-1 Lead in WS With right-hander Howard Ehmke leading the charge, the Cincinnati Reds got past the Philadelphia Athletics, 7-5, in extra innings in Game 3 of the World Series. Ehmke threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball at Shibe Park as Cincinnati managed to grab a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Paul Waner came to bat in the top of the 11th. Facing Philadelphia pitcher Vic Sorrell, he hit a first pitch fastball for a 2-run single. It was a game-changer, putting Cincinnati on top, 7-5. "We took advantage of our opportunities," Waner told the Cincinnati Times. "It's as simple as that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Reds lead series 2-1 Game 4, October 8th, 1928, Shibe Park Almost There: Cincinnati On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 5-1 Win When the stakes were high, Ed Walsh raised his game to match. The right-handed Walsh turned in a stellar performance in Game 4 of the World Series, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Cincinnati Reds to victory. He allowed 11 hits and struck out 2. The win gave Cincinnati a 3-1 lead over the Philadelphia Athletics in the best-of-7 series. One of the clutch hits for Cincinnati came from one of their biggest talents. In the top of the seventh with two out, Jimmie Foxx, who finished 5th in the NL in triples with 17 last year, hit a run-scoring double to put the Reds up, 3-1. For the game, the catcher went 2-4 with 2 doubles and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 2 runs. "It's nice to come out on top today," said Foxx. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Reds lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 9th, 1928, Shibe Park Reds Hammered by Lindstrom, Drop Game 5 to Athletics The Philadelphia Athletics have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Cincinnati Reds, winning, 9-4, at Shibe Park. Athletics third baseman Freddie Lindstrom was 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. The win cuts the deficit facing the Athletics to 3-2 in the best-of-7 World Series. Bill Terry, the Philadelphia first baseman, contributed a 2-run double in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 4-1, Athletics. For the game, Terry was 2-5 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. "We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said Philadelphia skipper Del Delmas. Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Reds lead series 3-2 Game 6, October 11th, 1928, Redland Field Reds Take Title With a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Athletics tonight at Redland Field, the Cincinnati Reds wrapped up their 3rd title in team history. Cincinnati left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Reds celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors' clubhouse following the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Cincinnati manager Sadie McMahon. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as Cincinnati celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works. "We're going to celebrate our team, our championship Cincinnati Reds," the mayor said. The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 87-67 record. Reds win series 4-2 World Series MVP: RF Paul Waner (Cincinnati Reds) |

1929 World Series results
1929 World Series: Cleveland Guardians vs. Cincinnati Reds
Results Game 1, October 9th, 1929, League Park Foxx, Reds Wallop Guardians in Game 1 of WS The Cincinnati Reds started the World Series in style, winning on the road against the Cleveland Guardians at League Park by a score of 8-2 to take an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Reds first baseman Jimmie Foxx excelled. He went 4 for 4 with a home run, a triple, a double, and a walk, while scoring 4 runs and driving in 3. A key moment came with one out in the top of the first. That's when Foxx hit a fastball from Firpo Marberry for a 2-run home run, putting Cincinnati up, 3-0. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Reds manager Sadie McMahon said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park in Cleveland. Reds lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 10th, 1929, League Park Cincinnati Tops Cleveland Again, 8-7 Riding the 2-hit performance of right fielder Sam Rice, the Cincinnati Reds got a road win against the Cleveland Guardians, 8-7, in Game 2 of the World Series. Rice went 2-3 with a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Reds, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0. The game was all tied up in the top of the ninth, until Rice delivered big-time for Cincinnati, stroking a dramatic run-scoring double off Lefty Stewart. The game-changing hit put the Reds on top, 7-6. "It was a good day, but I'm not letting my guard down," Rice said. "I'll let my guard down as soon as someone puts a big, fat championship ring on my finger." The next game is set to be played on October 12th, 1929 at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Reds lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 12th, 1929, Redland Field Cincinnati Wins at Home to Take 3-0 Lead in WS The Cincinnati Reds are one game away from a sweep after beating the visiting Cleveland Guardians, 7-2, at Redland Field. Reds left-hander Dutch Leonard had a standout performance in which he threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. Cincinnati now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. A key moment came with two out in the bottom of the fourth. That's when Leonard hit a fastball from Tom Zachary for a run-scoring single, putting Cincinnati up, 3-1. "We lost," Cleveland manager Oscar Purner said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Reds lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 13th, 1929, Redland Field Cleveland Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1 The Cleveland Guardians have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Cincinnati Reds, winning, 5-4, at Redland Field. Guardians right-hander Firpo Marberry threw 8.0 innings allowing 4 runs. The win cuts the deficit facing the Guardians to 3-1 in the best-of-7 World Series. Cleveland used a timely hit from Red Kress to get the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to put the Guardians ahead, 5-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a difference-maker. "We're one game closer to our goal," Cleveland manager Oscar Purner said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Redland Field in Cincinnati. Reds lead series 3-1 Game 5, October 14th, 1929, Redland Field Reds Take Title With a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians at Redland Field today, the Cincinnati Reds wrapped up their 4th title in team history. The Reds left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Cincinnati manager Sadie McMahon. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as Cincinnati celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order. "I hope they have a big celebration," Cleveland manager Oscar Purner said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it." World Series MVP: 1B Jimmie Foxx (Cincinnati Reds) |
