1938-39 Offseason News and Notes
Sometimes, things get by me. This one did, but it shouldn’t have. In 1938, Satchel Paige set a very impressive record. He finished the season with a 1.31 ERA. That not only beats Rube Waddell’s old record, but it shattered it! (the old record was 1.46 set in 1908) This question has to be asked. How the hell did he lose 6 games!!!!!!! SP Hal Newhouser is the 1st overall pick, and will join Dave Barnhill in Cincinnati to form MLB's newest dynamic duo. ![]() ![]() ![]() I really enjoyed Dutch's career. He could have been even better. Well deserved honor! ![]() |

1939 MLB Regular Season
Satchel Paige allowed 17 earned runs in his first 3 starts of the season. That’s roughly 45% of the earned runs he allowed all of last season! ![]() ![]() On back to back days in early August, the first place St. Louis Browns are dealt a huge blow to their title hopes. Starting pitchers Russ Van Atta and Les Tietje are both lost for the season. These 2 have a combined record of 75-24 over the last 1.5 seasons. This turns a fantastic rotation, into a below average one. They have a 10 game lead on the Yankees. Can the offense carry them into the playoffs? ![]() ![]() Van Atta and Tietje On August 4th, during a 6-5 loss to the Reds, Lou Gehrig hit his 16th home run of the season. It was also his 605th career home run, passing Babe Ruth, and becoming the All-time Home Run KING! ![]() ![]() Triple Crowns for everybody!!! ![]() |

![]() The Browns are going for their MLB record 4th World Series win in a row. The NY Highlanders of 1905-07 also won 3 times in a row, but lost to the Boston Doves in their attempt at 4. As I’ve already said, the Browns are missing 2 excellent pitchers. Other then Robert Griffith, the rotation is very poor. It’s up to the offense. Brooklyn got here with 2 castoffs. Mel Ott and Jimmie Foxx. Ott was a serviceable player, with medicore ratings in Detroit. After a 1934 trade to Brooklyn, everything clicked. He’s become a star, knocking in 133 or more runs in three of the last four years. Jimmie Foxx was a hot shot prospect, who suffered some massive talent drops. He played well when he got a chance, but has been dumped by 3 teams. 1939 was a huge breakout for him. 36 home runs and 138 RBI’s. He’s found a home too. |

1939 World Series
The Browns defeated the Dodgers in the 1937 World Series. Brooklyn, has never won a championship. As the 30’s come to an end though, the franchise has to be optimistic. They did win 3 NL pennants, which never happened before 1932. Griffith and the Brown bats dominated game one, 11-1. Now it gets dicey for St. Louis. They’ll be pitching some bad pitchers. Game 2 Browns started Ray Sherid had an ERA of 5.83 this year. It ends up not mattering though, as St. Louis again dominates 16-3. A Jimmie Foxx home run and a complete game from Johnny Marcum give game three to Brooklyn, 3-1. Amazingly, Robert Griffith repeats his game 1 performance. 9 innings, 4 hits, and 1 run. He loses though 1-0, and the series is tied at 2! A 7 run lead is too much for Brooklyn to overcome, and despite making it close, the Browns take game five 9-8. Game 6 is a thriller. Each team scores 4 runs in the middle frames. A ninth inning error got the Dodgers Luke Appling to third base with nobody out. Browns reliever Garland Braxton then stuck out the next 3 Dodgers to come to the plate, and a golden opportunity was gone. In the bottom of the tenth, Johnny Hopp beat out a slow ground ball to SS. He then stole second base. At the plate, the man who knocked in the winning run in each of the last 3 World Series. Joe DiMaggio tripled to left field, and St. Louis Browns have won their 4th straight World Series!!!! |

Even without the Yankees, Joltin' Joe Dimaggio is a better baseball player than any stat can justify

I do all the extra graphics via paint/photoshop. I'm still a rookie at all that stuff, but I'm a visual person. I love working on this type of stuff and improving my skills. So ya, every world series logo is just something i did on one, or a combo of those programs. I'm glad your enjoying it. I am too! |

1939-40 Offseason News and Notes
Wow, Philly has decided to trade away ace Barney Brown. ![]() The Phillies are going into rebuild mode. Gehrig had his worst season, Suttles is about to turn 40, and Brown isn’t getting any younger at 32. He finished his Phillies career with a 165-92 record. He won the 1931 Rookie of the year, 36 and 37 Rube Waddell awards, played in 5 all-star teams and won 2 world series. Ron Northey is a nice piece going back to Philly. ![]() Barney Brown Jackie Robinson is the 1st overall pick by the Cleveland Indians. This means that their middle infield will feature real life teammates Robinson, and Pee Wee Reese in a few years. ![]() ![]() ![]() Tris Speaker barely made it in. He's got good numbers, but not as good as i thought i remembered. I want the Hall of Fame to be special. Only the best of the best. Speaker is about the bottom of the barrel in terms of members, at this point. ![]() |

1940 MLB Regular Season
Washington Senators 2nd round pick Booker McDaniels has gotten off to the best start I’ve ever seen. His career is just 10 games old. He’s 10-0, with a 1.30 ERA. In games where McDaniels doesn’t start, the Sens are just 9-24! ![]() Booker McDaniel WOW, Joe DiMaggio has entered the prime of his career. He’s won 4 World Series, and is just 25 years old. In his first 200 plate appearances of 1940, he’s got 69 hits, 17 home runs, 64 RBI’s, 20 walks, and just 2 strikeouts! Joltin Joe ![]() I haven’t talked a lot about 43 year old Detroit Tigers pitcher William Bell. Bell has been a good pitcher since he was drafted 8th overall in 1922. Up until 1933, Bell was a solid pitcher. He went 188-150. I’d guess his ERA over that span was around 3.80. That’s good, that’s solid. He’s been a work horse. A series of injuries held him to only 20 starts in 1933, and he missed the start of the 1934 season because of it. Somehow, some way, from the age of 36 to now, 42, he’s become one of the best pitchers in baseball. His record from 1934 to present day is 112-50, with an ERA around 2.50. He won the 1935 Rube Waddell award, at age 37, and at age 40, he went 14-3, with a 2.02 ERA. He’s listed by OSA as the 2nd best pitcher in baseball. It seems he’s getting better! How long can William Bell keep this up! I bring this up because, if you can do math better then me, you'll see Bell just won his 300th ball game. William Bell On the last day of the season, the Cincinnati Reds led the Chicago Cubs by just 1 game. The Cubs had been working hard to whittle down, what once was a 7 game Reds lead 3 weeks ago. The Reds were shutout by Pittsburgh, giving the Cubs a chance to force a 1 game playoff. News much have reached the Cubs in the eighth inning, as they scored 6 runs that frame, and beat the Cardinals, by 6. Chicago will start Whitey Wilshere. He’s a 28 year old lefty, who had a hell of a 1940 season. He’s a former 4th round pick that’s really developed nicely. ![]() The Reds will go with Milt Shoffner. He’s 2 years removed from losing 21 games. Despite that, he’s been a regular in Cincinnati’s rotation for a decade. It’s a pretty even pitching matchup. Shoffner and Wilshere both have good games. It’s a low scoring affair, but, despite only registering 4 hits, the Cubs complete the comeback and win the NL pennant with a 3-2 win. Their reward, the St. Louis Browns. ![]() ![]() |

1940 World Series
Robert Griffith wins his ninth WS game, a 4-2 game one Browns win. The Cubs knock Van Atta around, and Cubs ace Paul Bruno dominates in a game two, 10-2 Cubs win to tie the series. 4 early Browns runs are enough to hold off the Cubs in a 5-3, game three Browns win. Robert Griffith again took the mound in game four, and had his worst World Series performance ever. He allowed 7 runs in 3 innings. Enos Slaughter knocked in 3 of his World Series leading 6 RBI’s, and the Cubs tie the series again, with a 13-9 win. Paul Bruno again dominates Van Atta, and the Cubs take game five, 7-0, putting them 1 win away from ending the Browns reign. Whitey Wilshere shuts out the Browns for a 2nd consecutive game, and the series is over. The Chicago Cubs have ending the St. Louis dynasty, and are 1940 World Series CHAMPIONS! |

1940-41 Offseason News and Notes
The Chicago White Sox will have a pretty good outfield in a few years. Ted Williams will be joined by Ralph Kiner, who is the first pick in the 1940 MLB draft. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
