It's a good bet this will be Giambi's last year as a Yankee. Whether this is true or not, he's having a good season and I hope it lasts thru October.

The Yankees won't pick up his option. It's $22 million.

But, that doesn't mean they won't do something else. There's a $5 million buyout and they'll likely use that and throw in another $10-15 million for two years.

Giambi likes playing in New York. He knows he won't get anything over 10 million in the open market. And he'll want a little security so they'll give him a second year.

Right now, the Yankees simply do not have anyone else that can play 1B for them. Bringing Giambi back at a reduced rate is probably their only choice.

Its not even an option. The Yankees, for the past 3 years, have been looking for a way to get out of their contract with Giambi. Given him anything to stay here at this point would be shocking.

They have a team full of 1B right now. As much as he hates to admit it, its only a matter of time before Posada is moved to first. And with his arm hanging on by a thread, and his age, a move to first can only help him.

Not to mention Giambi is playing on borrowed time, he's way over the over on how long it would take him to get hurt. You know that injury and obligatory trip to the DL each year is going to sneak up at any time.

If Giambi did some how wind up with an extension, which again, I would be shocked if they did. It better be an entirely incentive driven deal. You know, you get so much for a certain amount of at bats, HR's and of course not being busted for any further substance abuse.

I would be shocked too if Giambi was resigned but I just don't see who would be the real replacement.

There's no one the Yankees will throw big money at in this free agent class. I don't think they are confident about having Shelley Duncan there full-time. It might seem that they are going to continue to see if Betemit has value there but I think they see him more as a super-utility guy instead.

And we hear this talk about Posada but we haven't heard anything from him. How do we know that Posada would work out there. How do we know that he'll even want to be there.

I mean, do you feel more confident with Posada at first and Bengie Molina behind the plate instead of Giambi at first and Posada behind the plate?

I don't even feel confident with Molina being the backup catcher, I would rather have Moeller.

I have no confidence in Posada behind the plate at all anymore. Posada can say what he wants, but his days as catcher are over if he wants to pro-long his career. His arm just doesn't have it and we're gonna see more people running on him.

I think the Yankees have a spec at catcher who's supposed to be pretty good. What we may see is like what Girardi did with Posada when he first came up. Maybe Posada can split some time between 1b and Ca.

Can't believe we're almost half way through the season and there hasn't been a breakthrough in our division. Nobody seems to be getting a run together at any point. We lose a couple and the Rays and Yankees close up and then we win a couple and they lose. It just feels to me as if the entire division is going to limp over the October line...

There's an asterisk right next to the title!!!

Lets do what real baseball fans do. Ignore his very existence and moderation. Maybe then we'll just forget he's here and move on.

I don't think that'll happen. The Sox aren't as strong, and your opponents aren't that weak. Even without Wang, we've still got a decent rotation with a killer offense. The Rays look REALLY tough and the only thing keeping them from really breaking things open is their in-experience.

I see this being a 3 horse race all the way to the end. Should be fun

I'm enjoying the fact that the kiddies are succeeding in the pen. I wish Ohlendorf would become more consistent, but Veras & Ramirez have been very good. If Giese continues to throw well, I wonder if Kennedy comes back as a reliever and Hawkins gets released.
