JIM Rumor Mill

With the first two months of the season in the books, the Joy in Mudville rumor mill continues to turn . . .

Hopelessly out of the pennant chase, the Milwaukee Brewers are shopping pitchers Ken Sanders, Bob Locker, John Gelnar, Dave Baldwin and John Morris.

Not happy with the play of light-hitting Freddie Patek, Pittsburgh is seeking an upgrade at short stop.

Baltimore management is puzzled by the Orioles' offensive struggles this season. Through the first six weeks of the spring, pitcher Jim Hardin had hit as many home runs (1) as reigning American League MVP Boog Powell.

Cincinnati hopes to pull a deal for a second baseman before the August 31 deadline. The Reds have indicated that left fielder and future hair stylist Bernie Carbo is on the trading block.

Montreal ownership is reportedly willing and ready to deal.

Philadelphia pitcher Jim Bunning (1-8, 5.34 ERA) is rumored to be considering a career in politics after he hangs up the spikes.

Boston pitcher Tom Bradley has been angered by his team's lack of offensive support. Despite a 1.48 ERA, the right-hander is just 2-4 in 13 starts for the Red Sox.

Chicago Cub second baseman Glenn Beckert (pictured below) continues to fume over the loss of his starting job to recent acquisition Don Buford.

A new ballpark is in the works for the Kansas City Royals. It will open for the 1973 season.

Washington Senators management has yet to confirm the team will play in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area next season.

JIM Standings Heading into This Weekend's Amateur Draft

With the amateur draft upon us this weekend, the Joy in Mudville pennant races are tighter than ever.

The largest divisional lead is held by Los Angeles in the National League West. The Dodgers are three games ahead of Cincinnati.

Meanwhile in the East, the defending NL champion Pittsburgh Pirates have fought their way ahead of St. Louis.

In the American League, the East has seen three different leaders this season. Washington, New York and Baltimore have all taken turns at the head of the pack. The Orioles hold a 1.5-game lead over the Yankees and Senators.

The AL West features four teams within 2.5 games of each other. The surging Chicago White Sox have risen to the top of the standings. Chicago is closely followed by California, Oakland and Kansas City.

Senators, Indians Agree to Swap

With the amateur draft just hours away, speculation that the Cleveland Indians will take infielder Mike Schmidt with the top pick all but seems assured.

Early Thursday morning, the Erie Warriors agreed to send starting third baseman Graig Nettles to the Washington Senators for left fielder Jeff Burroughs.

Nettles, 26, was hitting .263 with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs through 60 games with the Sons of Geronimo. The left-handed hitting Nettles is known as a Gold Glove-caliber fielder at third.

Burroughs, 20, has appeared in 35 games for Washington. In just 38 at-bats the right-hander is hitting .263 with no homers and six RBIs. Burroughs has been backing up Hal McRae in left field for the Senators.

Cleveland has also sent pitcher Rick Austin to the minors. Prospect Pete Broberg has been called up and will take a slot in the Indian rotation.

Bunning Hangs Up Glove for Political Career

Breaking news out of Philadelphia . . .

In a stunning announcement, Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia Phillies has announced his retirement from baseball to pursue a career in politics.

Bunning said, "I am ready to move from one hill to another. I appreciate everything the Phillies have done for me, and I look forward to one day representing the great fans of Philadelphia in our nation's capital."

Bunning, 34, was just 1-8 with a 5.34 ERA in 14 starts with Philadelphia this season.

To fill Bunning's spot on the roster, the Phillies have called up AA sensation Steve Stone. Hopefully all the youngsters out there can learn something from watching him play.

Giants, Yankees Undergo Change at the Top

Brad S. has decided to step down as the GM of the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. Taking over in his place is Todd L, older brother of Tim L (aka Trader Tim). We can't wait to see the first deal they make with one another.

On behalf of the Joy in Mudville we'd like to welcome Todd. His bio will be posted in the near future. For now know that Todd scored the first touchdown in the history of his hometown's youth football league.

Nettles Denies Kelly Leak Rumors

Graig Nettles has more to worry about than just being traded.

The third baseman denies reports that teen baseball sensation Kelly Leak of "The Bad News Bears" is his relation.

Nettles released a statement through the Washington Senators--the franchise that recently traded for him. In the statement, Nettles said that while he is thrilled by the talent on the diamond that Leak possesses and wishes him all the best in his baseball pursuits, he is not related to the youngster in any way.

You be the judge:

Todd L: San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees

The posting introduces the latest member to the Joy in Mudville League. Welcome Todd L!

Name: Todd

Favorite team: Cubs

Favorite player(s): Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins, Ryne Sandberg

Best game I ever attended: Cubs vs. Reds, Riverfront Stadium, mid 70's, Herman Franks belly bucked the home plate umpire to the ground and was ejected.

Best baseball movie: "A League of Their Own", Tom Hanks line "Their's no crying in baseball", is a classic. "The Babe", gets special mention because it was filmed in the Danville Stadium (hometown).

Best baseball book: "Lords of the Realm"

Drink that best describes my teams: Slow Gin Fiz

New Year's wish for my team: Kerry Wood becomes a great reliever- Cubs celebrate their 100th year World Series Anniversary with a Title.

Any other quirky fact or tidbit you'd like to share: The A's of the early 70's were my favorite all-time team. Can I trade team for team?

Three-Way Trade Involves Minor League Catchers

A three-way trade has sent minor leaguers to new franchises.

With Friday's deal, Milwaukee sends catcher Pete Koegel to Houston. The Astros trade catcher Rick Stelmaszek to Washington. Washington sends catcher Paul Casanova to the Brewers.

"It may wind up being my trash for your trash for someone else's trash," said one of the GMs.

Senators, Astros, Expos Pull Off Trade

Things often come in threes.

If that old saying is true, then Friday's late-afternoon trade may be yet another indication of future events.

On the eve of the amateur draft Montreal, Washington and Houston hooked up on a three-way trade.

The Expos sent pitcher Burt Hooton to Washington. The Senators then traded a 1972 first-round pick along with a possible conditional pick to the Astros. Houston dealt first baseman Bob Watson to Montreal.

Hooton, 21, was Montreal's top pick in last year's amateur draft. The No. 5 overall selection was recently chosen as a Class-A All-Star. He was rated the 24th best overall prospect by Baseball America.

Watson, 25, was batting just .236 with no homers and 17 RBIs for the Astros. His playing time has fallen off significantly with the emergence of John Mayberry in Houston. Watson, however, hit .307 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 1970.

If the traded draft pick turns out to be lower than No. 11 overall, then Washington has agreed to give Houston its second-round pick next summer as well.

Indians Grab Ohio Native with Top Pick

The Cleveland Indians kept an Ohio native in his home state with the No. 1 overall pick in the June amateur draft.

The Indians selected Ohio University All-American infielder Mike Schmidt Saturday to open the second annual draft.

Cleveland brass indicated that the Dayton native will likely begin his playing career in the big leagues rather than in the minors.

Schmidt, 21, helped lead the Ohio Bobcats to the most recent College World Series.

San Diego chose right fielder Dwight Evans with the second pick. A year ago, the Padres had the No. 1 selection and took pitcher Jon Matlack (who has since been traded). Cleveland took pitcher J.R. Richard with the No. 2 pick last summer.

Montreal grabbed pitcher Rick "Big Daddy" Reuschel with the third pick. Milwaukee followed by taking infielder Buddy Bell fourth. Detroit tabbed hard-throwing pitcher Rich Gossage at No. 5.

Montreal Acquires Catcher to Complete Earlier Deal

The player to be named later has been named. It's Joe Nolan.

The Montreal Expos acquired the recently drafted catcher from Washington to complete an earlier trade that sent pitcher Steve Renko to the Senators.

Nolan, 20, was the Senators' third-round pick in Saturday's amateur draft. The six-foot, 190-pounder will report to Montreal's Class-A team. Although he is a right-handed throwing catcher, Nolan bats from the left side.

JIM Rumor Mill

With the All-Star break fast approaching, the rumor mill hits its mid-season form . . .

Milwaukee has put third baseman Rich Rollins on the trading block.

San Diego is looking to deal Cito Gaston, Nate Colbert, Ollie Brown and pretty much anybody on its roster.

Rumblings that the Senators will leave Washington for the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex are growing louder. In addition, the franchise shift will likely send the team into the American League West with one team (most likely Milwaukee) landing in the AL East.

Unhappy with the inconsistent performance of reigning Cy Young award winner Dave McNally, Baltimore is reportedly entertaining offers for the left-hander.

The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds are trying to work out a deal that would send second baseman Glenn Beckert to the Queen City. Word has it that the Cubs are seeking a catcher.

With their recent surge into the American League West pennant race, the California Angels are promoting outfielder Mickey Rivers from the minors.

Houston surprised a number of experts by drafting catcher Steve Yeager in the first round. Just a year ago, the Astros took backstop Darrell Porter. Could a trade be in the works?

Reds Trade for Beckert

Attempting to solve their problems at second base, the Cincinnati Reds traded for a disgruntled Chicago Cub Tuesday.

Cincinnati acquired 30-year-old Glenn Beckert from Chicago. In exchange, the Cubs got power-hitting prospect Cliff Johnson.

Beckert hit .266 and scored 74 runs last season with the Cubs. However, he lost his starting job to Don Buford who came over in a trade with Baltimore. Appearing in just 25 games this season, Beckert is batting a lowly .111 (3-for-27).

Yet, Beckert will most likely take over the starting second base job in Cincinnati where Tommy Helms (.079) has also struggled this season. Backup Jimmy Stewart (.279) has spent more time in left field this season. Moreover, the Reds aren't sure prospect Lenny Randle is ready for the big leagues quite yet.

Johnson, 24, was the 19th overall pick in the recent amateur draft. Cub officials were lured by his potential power numbers in Wrigley Field.

Orioles, White Sox, Pirates and Dodgers Lead Divisions at All-Star Break

The fans of Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles all hold bragging rights at the All-Star break.

Those four teams lead their respective divisions as the annual Midsummer Classic is upon us.

Three of the four--the Orioles, Pirates and Dodgers--all made the playoffs a year ago. The White Sox are the newcomer intent on crashing the party. A season ago, Chicago finished a distant second to Oakland.

JIM Diamond Notes: Philadelphia captured two of the three National League awards for June. Outfielder Greg Luzinski won the Player of the Month award while teammate Barry Lersch took home the Pitcher of the Month honors . . . The American League award winners were first baseman Tony Horton of Cleveland and pitcher Jon Matlack of Baltimore . . . Rennie Stennett of Oakland and John Milner of Atlanta repeated as Rookie of the Month picks . . . Houston's playoff hopes were dealt a severe blow when first baseman John Mayberry tore a thigh muscle. He will miss at least three months. Earlier in the season, the Astros traded away their other first basemen Bob Watson and Joe Pepitone. That leaves veteran Jim Beauchamp as Houston's starting first sacker . . . Likewise, the Cincinnati Reds will be without left fielder Bernie Carbo who fractured his cheekbone in a recent game. Carbo could miss the remainder of the year . . . Atlanta's Rico Carty became the first player in JIM history to hit three home runs in a single game. Carty went deep thrice against the New York Mets in a 10-9 loss on July 4 . . . Chicago Cub Ken Holtzman threw a one-hitter against San Diego July 10. Only a first-inning single by Ed Spiezio spoiled Holtzman's no-hit bid . . . New York Yankee Roy White will miss at least a week with an Achilles tendon injury . . . No. 1 overall draft pick Mike Schmidt of the Cleveland Indians is batting just .140 in 86 at-bats. He hit his first career home run off Fritz Peterson of the Yankees on June 29 . . . The trade deadline is July 31.
