They've hosted a Rugby World Cup, so they've already got some of the stadiums, and should have the infrastructure to be able to pull it off logistically.

Now, whether it will be a success is another thing, especially for the South African people and on soccer in the country - that is still to be seen.
The HIV stuff shouldn't have any bearing on it.

The black Africans LOVE football. The 'whites' prefer Rugby.

Agree..the Spanish language coverage treats the WC as a celebration. For ESPN its just cold clinical corporate TV

I was going to ask you about how popular football is in SA. From what I've read, it's not very popular at all, but you've answered the question.

And sorry for being a bit presumptuous there - I was in your backyard, and you should have got me out.

Another cool thing about the Spanish coverage is that they show the players marching onto the field and they show the anthems. That gets me really fired up.

Although when I was at school we played more football than rugby. Go figure.

I can see that, although I find the anthems to be dull and without life, or start up stupid contreversies because some dumb ****s decide it's a good time to express their feelings for another country. Wankers.

We get the twice weekly ESPN baseball feed on our sports channels over here. Pretty crap. I prefer the local commentators when I get them through MLB.tv

You should watch some All Black rugby. Nothing beats a decent Haka for getting the old hairs on the back of the neck going.

ESPN don't even show the anthems? Wow, for a country that plays the national anthem before every sporting event that seems strange.

In this case I think they are more afraid of offending the femenists than the religious types.
