COLLEGE FOOTBALL PRESEASON POLL RELEASED : IRISH NUMBER 1!
Notre Dame heads the list as the 1947 college football preseason poll was released today. The Fighting Irish led by senior QB Johnny *Lujack are the favourites after finishing second to Army in last season's year end poll. In addition to Heisman candidate *Lujack, Notre Dame is loaded with senior HB Fred *Evans and WR James xDavis along with a solid defense lead by ends Bob *Dove and George *Sullivan.

The University of Michigan, which finished 3rd in the polls last year is ranked second to start the season. Key Michigan contributers will be QB Daryll xRansford and RB Bump *Elliott. Texas had a terrible season a year ago but with senior QB Bobby *Layne the Longhorns are looking to redeem themselves this year.

Despite losing quarterback Charles *Trippi to graduation the Georgia Bulldogs are the 4th ranked team heading into the season. Senior Steve xKuffrey will have his work cut out for him replacing Trippi under center but he has an outstanding supporting cast led by RB Andy *Dudish, WR Tyler xGriffin and LB Bill *Godwin.

Rounding out the top 5 is Penn State. The strength of the Nittany Lions is their offensive line led by tackle John *Nolan and G Steve *Suhey who should clear some big holes for HB David xHunter.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
SCHANZ WINS DUEL OF 17-GAME WINNERS
In a battle of 17 game winners Charley Schanz outduelled Preacher Roe and helped the Philadelphia Phillies move a half game ahead of Pittsburgh atop the National League with a 7-4 win over the Pirates. The game was hardly the classic pitching duel that was expected as Philadelphia scored a run in the first on Joe Gordon's 19th homer of the season before the Pirates answered with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. All 3 of the Pittsburgh runs were unearned as the Phillies committed a pair of miscues in the first inning. The scoring continued in the second inning as Philadelphia plated 3 runs, 2 on a Joe Gordon double, before Pittsburgh answered with one of their own in the home half to tie the game at 4 after 2 innings.

The Phillies settled down at that point as Schanz would allow just 2 more Pittsburgh hits the rest of the way and Lefty Wilkie would pitch a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save. Roe would have more trouble in the 6th and be chased after Philadelphia plated 3 more runs thanks to a Buster Adams homerun. Schanz improves his record to 18-9 while Roe falls to 17-4.

With 18 wins in their last 21 games the Chicago Cubs haved moved into the thick of the National League pennant race. Yesterday spare outfielder George Case was the hero for the Cubs as he had 3 hits including a homer and drove in 3 runs in an 8-4 Chicago win at Brooklyn. 29 year old Hank Wyse went the distance for the Cubs to improve his record to 9-8. The victory moves Chicago to within 2 games of first place Philadelphia atop the National League. Tough news for the Dodgers in the game as they lost 2B Jackie Robinson for a couple of weeks with a back injury. Robinson was hitting .253 with 10 homers and 50 rbi's at the time. He is also leading the majors with 25 stolen bases.

Former St Louis Cardinal Stan Ferens tossed a complete game shutout to lead Cincinnati past his old team 4-0. Joe Dimaggio had a pair of rbi's to lead the Reds. In the other National League game the New York Giants hammered Boston 14-8. Vince Dimaggio homered and drove in 6 runs for the Giants while Sid Gordon added a pair of solo homers. Whitey Kurowski had 5 rbi's in a losing cause for the Braves.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The Cleveland Indians suffered a rare loss when leading entering the ninth. Detroit got a solo homerun from former Indian Hal Trosky in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 3 and then won it with 4 runs in the 10th inning. Bobby Thomson and Red Kress each hit 2 runs singles off of Indians reliever Johnny Babich to give Detroit the 7-3 win. Indians starter Bob Feller was forced to leave the game in the 6th inning with a tight shoulder but he is expected to be okay for his next start.

The St Louis Browns beat Philadelphia 6-4 to gain a little ground on the front-running Indians. Outfielder Eddie Silber had a pair of rbi's for the Browns while Archie McKain won his 13th game of the season. Third place Boston also won, hammering the Yankees 12-6. Red Sox slugger Ted Williams broke out of a 5-for-33 slump in a big way, hitting a double and a homer while driving in 5 runs. Mel Almada went 4-for-5 and has taken over the American League batting lead.

In the other American League contest Fred Hutchinson won his 15th game of the season and Cecil Travis hit a 3-run homer to lead Washington past Chicago 6-2.

PROMISING HEAVYWEIGHT LASTARZA WINS DEBUT
Bronx native Roland LaStarza, a heavyweight with plenty of promise, lived up to the advance billing in his professional debut. LaStarza won an easy 8 round unanimous decision over journeyman Hank Cooper in Newart last night. LaStarza, who sent Cooper to the floor twice in the bout, won every round and by an unofficial count landed 212 punches to his opponents total of 27. LaStarza is expected to fight 3 more bouts before the end of the year including his next match on Sunday September 9th against an as of yet undetermined opponent.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
KNICKS SIGN BARUFALDI
The New York Knickerbockers have signed former St Louis starting center Brenden Barufaldi to a 1 year contract. The 9th year pro started 65 games for the Bombers a year ago, averaging 6.9 pph and 6.9 rpg. Prior to the Bombers the former University of California grad played with Philadelphia, Fort Wayne and Kansas City. He is expected to compete with Leonard Loch, who has been the Knicks starting center the past 4 seasons.

The Chicago Stags announced a couple of moves yesterday. First they resigned PF Johnny *Jorgensen. The third year pro from Mississippi State was a second round pick of the Stags. He averaged 7.3 ppg in a reserve role last season. Chicago also longtime backup guard Pete Lathrop to their roster. The 30 year old split last season between St Louis and Kansas City. The former Washington State star has also played with Pittsburgh and Syracuse in the BAA.

In other news Kansas City signed former Minneapolis backup PG Michael Burtch. Kentucky inked small forward James Stout, who spent last season with the Braves after 6 years in Dallas while Fort Wayne resigned 3rd year guard Billy *Hassett to a 1 year deal.

LOUIS-CHARLES HEAVYWEIGHT REMATCH TONIGHT
There is plenty of excitement in New York tonight as preparation is complete for what many feel will be the fight of the year as world heavyweight champion Joe Louis meets top ranked contender Ezzard Charles. Louis is a perfect 9-0 in his postwar career while Charles is 20-1 with his only loss coming to Louis on an 8th round TKO last year. There was so much demand for tickets that the fight has been shifted from Madison Square Garden to Yankee Stadium where it is completely sold out.

Last night Phil Kim, rated as one of the 10 best young fighters easily won his professional debut in San Francisco. The 21 year old from Honolulu scored a unanimous decision over Freddie Herman. The 22 year old Herman is 7-11 in his career.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHIL'S ROY SANDERS SLAMS PIRATES
First baseman Roy Sanders hit a 9th inning grand slam to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past Pittsburgh 8-3 in National League play. The victory gave the Phillies 3 wins in their 4 game trip to Pittsburgh and increased their lead on the second place Pirates to a game and a half. Things do not get any easier for the Pirates who now have to regroup with 4 games against the red-hot Chicago Cubs while the Phillies head to Brooklyn to meet the last place Dodgers.

The Cubs completed a 4 game sweep of the Dodgers at Ebbetts Field with an 11-5 win yesterday. Harlond Clift with his 21st of the season and Bill Nicholson homered for the Cubs while catcher Ken O'Dea had his second straight 3-hit game. In the only other National League game Steve Gromek improved his record to 15-7 as Boston dumped New York 4-1.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
39 year old Ival Goodman was the hero in Cleveland. Trailing Detroit 3-0 Goodman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 7th and won the game with a 2-run double with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth inning. The 4-3 victory improved Bill Lohrman's record to 13-1. Detroit reliever Frankie Biscan took the loss as he was unable to preserve the win for ace Al Jurisch who pitched 8 strong innings.

St Louis gave away a 5-0 lead after 5 innings against Philadelphia but the Browns pulled out the victory with an rbi single off the bat of Vic Wertz in the bottom of the 12th inning. Johnny Pesky drove in 3 runs as Boston beat New York 6-4 while in Washington Phil Cavarretta's 12th homer of the season helped the Senators past Chicago 5-4.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
PACKERS NAME *ALBERT WEEK 3 STARTER
Traditionally the third preseason game is the contest where starters get the most preseason action they will see all month. That being said the Green Bay Packers caution we should not read anything into the fact that rookie Frank *Albert will be starting at quarterback tonight against Houston over second year man Jordan Montana. *Albert, selected 4th overall from Stanford last April, has looked very poised under center in his two appearances so far this season. Montana, who ironically was a year ahead of *Albert at Stanford, appeared ready to guide the team fulltime this year after Cecil *Isbell was not resigned by the Packers. Montana has played quite well this preseason but the Packers have simply been so impressed with *Albert that they feel they have to give the rookie a chance to show what he can do with the first team.

In addition to Houston visiting Green Bay, there are two other games slated for tonight. Another rookie quarterback will get the start in New York as it appears former Alabama signal-caller Harry *Gilmer has won the starting job with the Giants. Former Giant starter Eric Poppinga signed with Indianapolis during the off-season. The Giants host Pittsburgh. The Steelers hope to see a better performance out of first round pick Bob *Forte. Despite seeing plenty of action in the first two games the ex-Arkansas Razorback has just 7 tackles to his credit. The other game has Miami visiting Minnesota.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
TULSA IS TEAM TO BEAT IN MVC
With an 8-2-1 record and a win in the Alamo Bowl the University of Tulsa brought some respect to the Missouri Valley Conference. However calling the loose association of 5 teams a conference may be a bit of a stretch. Only Drake plays each of the conference opponents during the season and 2 of the 5 schools only play two in-conference opponents.

Despite the graduation of QB Clyde *LeForce and WR Camp *Wilson, Tulsa still has plenty of talent. Senior RB's Scott xSmith and JR *Boone will lead the offense. Other players of note from the conference include RB Linwood Sexton and QB Eddie *Kriwiel from Wichita State and Oklahoma A&M FB Jim *Parmer.

Here are the final 1946 standings
Code:
		  CONFERENCE	OVERALL
		  W L	T	W L T
Tulsa 3 0	0	7 2 1
St. Louis 1 0	1	4 4 1
Wichita State 1 2	0	4 5 1
Drake 0 3	1	1 7 1
Oklahoma A&M 1 1	0	4 5 2

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
PRESEASON NIT FIELD IS ANNOUNCED
An impressive collection of teams has been assembled for the 1947 Preseason National Invitational Tournament. The event, which will be held at Madison Square Garden Nov 8-10 will feature three teams that could be in the preseason top 10: Holy Cross, Indiana and Oklahoma A&M.

Holy Cross, a final four team a year ago and led by sophomore guards Bob *Cousy and Frank *Oftring, could be ranked number one when the preseason poll is released October 1st. Indiana is another potential number one and like Holy Cross the Hoosiers boost an impressive backcourt in senior Paul *Armstrong and junior Dick *McGuire. Ohlahoma A&M, which won the Big 8 tournament title 3 of the past 4 seasons, is also a possible preseason top 10 candidate. Senior guard Lonnie *Eggleston and sophomore forward Jack *Shelton will be the Cowboys key contributers.

Rounding out the top 4 in the field will be PCC South defending champ California led by reigning conference MVP senior center Jack *Nichols. Nichols is a candidate for National Player of the year.

Other teams include defending Sun Belt Conference champion New Orleans although the Privateers have lost their two best players to graduation; MAC champion Miami of Ohio led by forward Bob *Brown; Skyline Champion Wyoming led by sensational sophomore forward Marko *Tordovich and freshman recruit Loy *Doty; and Auburn which had one of the best recruiting classes in the nation highlighted by 6'9" center Jason Rush and PG Barrett Payne.

Here are the seeds for the preseason NIT
1 Indiana
2 Holy Cross
3 California
4 Oklahoma A&M
5 New Orleans
6 Miami Ohio
7 Wyoming
8 Auburn

The other two preseason tournaments will release their list of participating schools next month.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
JAZZ INK REED COBB TO FILL SF ROLE
The New Orleans Jazz have signed former University of Alabama star Reed Cobb to try and replace legendary forward Cameron Belli. Cobb, a former first round pick of the Warriors, ran into ankle problems and has never lived up to the potential he showed in college. He appeared in 62 games for the Chicago Stags a year ago but was played sparingly a year after undergoing his third ankle operation. Cobb has also played for Dallas, Kansas City and Philadelphia in his 9 year career. His best and only completely healthy season was his rookie year when he averaged 10.0 ppg for the Warriors. Belli was not resigned by the Jazz after 14 seasons in New Orleans. He signed with Milwaukee earlier in the week. The Jazz also announced the signing of veteran backup guard Tommy Brown. Brown was with Kansas City last year and averaged just 4.2 mpg.

Minneapolis has signed center Tyson Richardson to a 1 year deal. Richardson spent most of his 7 year career with Milwaukee but has also played for Indianapolis and Boston. Last season he started 37 games for the Celtics and averaged 8.5 ppg and 5.8 rpg.

Finally Buffalo announced the signing of former Wyoming guard Mel *Thurston. A strong defender and tremendous outside shooter, the 23 year old went undrafted this summer. An All-American this past season, *Thurston was the leading scorer in the Skyline Conference and was named the conference MVP. He also led the conference in steals. He graduates as the Skyline Conference's all-time leader in points, field goals made and steals.

A new home for the All-Sports Dynasty

My All-Sports Dynasty has relocated. Al has been kind enough to allow me to have a little section on his new Big City Baseball site for me to keep a journal of the dynasty. I think it will make the dynasty much easier for anyone interested in it to read and follow along. He has also set up a section on the messageboard at BCB for comments and feedback on the dynasty. I hope those of you who have been reading will follow me over to BCB (http://www.bigcitybaseball.com)

I am by no means leaving this dynasty board. I am amazed at how much the quality and quantity of dynasties has increased since way back when we first got things going with OOTP2. I will still continue to post here and definately continue to read the many great dynasties.

Thank you Steve and Markus and the moderators here for thinking enough of my dynasty to sticky it. And thanks to everyone who has provided feedback for me. I hope that continues and you will find it even easier to follow along with the new format at BCB.

The direct link to my new dynasty section is in my signature. While you are there be sure and check out the rest of Big City Baseball. I know Al has plenty of great things in store in the coming months.

The All-Sports dynasty will go back to being posted here as well as at Big City Baseball. Since I moved it I have received a couple of emails including one asking me if the move was tied in to the rumours that the OOTP board may be shut down by SI at some point in the future.

Now, that was something that was never on mind but I can understand how the timing of my switch could be perceived that way. While I see that SI may feel there are business reasons why this forum should be intergrated in to their own board in the future as OOTP:FE moves closer to release, I think for the most of us losing this board is the last thing we want to happen.

If that is indeed something Markus and co. are considering we need to do everything in our power to make him realize the value of this board to his business. There are some great dynasty writers in this community and I like to think we help attract interest in OOTP when newbies browse our little section of the messageboard.

For that reason my dynasty will continue here. Now I also fully believe in Al's vision for a great meeting place for all baseball management gamers so I will also post at his site. And to hopefully encourage you to check out all the great things at BCB I will post some exclusive articles that will only appear at BCB. Hopefully, at whichever location you choose you will continue to follow my replay and I wholeheartedly apologize to any who felt I was protesting or abandoning this board. That was certainly not my intention.

BOXING
EZZARD CHARLES KO'S JOE LOUIS
A shocking conclusion to the World Heavyweight championship as Ezzard Charles, after being knocked to the canvas 3 times in the first two rounds, recovered to knock out previously unbeaten Joe Louis in the third.

The first round was even in the early going as each fighter scored on several punches. With just under a minute remaining Louis spotted an opening and landed a devastating combination that knocked down the challenger. Charles regained his feet quickly but was clearly hurt. He spent the final 30 seconds of the round trying to run away from the champ.

Charles had not recovered fully heading into the second round and Louis again sent him to the canvas with a short, clean combination. Charles lurched to his feet on the count of 8 but there was no question he was in trouble. For the next minute and a half Louis reigned blows on Charles but few landed squarely until the champ connected with a tremendous shot under Charles' ribcage that sent him crumbling to the canvas. Charles again struggled to his feet and beat the count. The referee asked him if he wanted to continue and Charles nodded that he could. Louis would land a few more punches in the final seconds of the round but nothing that could finish off Charles.

As the bell rang to begin the third round Charles appeared to have regained his wits but looked in bad shape with his right eye nearly swollen shut. Louis sensing, as it would turn out falsely, that he could finish the fight right here charged in after Charles. Charles flailed wildly trying to hold the champ off. Louis dodged the blows and countered when all of a sudden one of Charles' wild swings caught Louis flush, nearly buckling the champ. Louis again lurched forward when Charles unleashed a lightning bolt and the champ was on his back. Unlike Charles, Louis could not regain his feet. His legs would not support him and as the referee counted 10 Louis rolled over on his back. Ezzard Charles was the new heavyweight champion of the world.

Charles, who's career record is now 21-1, says he will give Louis a rematch but not before the end of the year. Louis sees his record drop to 9-1 but vows he will get his title back.

ORTIZ AND CASTILLO CLASH TONIGHT
California native Manuel Ortiz hopes to take another step towards regaining the World Bantamweight Title he lost last fall when he faces Mexican champ Luis Castillo in San Francisco. Ortiz was 37-0-2 before falling to Canadian Fernando Gagnon in the post-war tournament title bout. He also lost a controversial decision in February to Luis Galvani, who is now the title holder in the division.

Castillo, 27-12-3, is among the 10 best bantamweights in the world and should provide a real test for Ortiz. He looked very good in his last fight but tired late and lost on points to Galvani.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CUBS KNOCK OFF PIRATES 6-5 IN SERIES OPENER
The Chicago Cubs continue to be the hottest team in major league baseball as they have now won 20 of their last 23 games after holding on to be the Pirates 6-5 in the opener of their 4 game series in Pittsburgh. Seldom used backup catcher Tony Giuliani was the hero for Chicago belting a pair of homers off of Pirates reliever Jim Tobin who entered the game in the second inning when reigning Cy Young winner Cliff Melton reaggraveted his back injury and was forced to leave the game. Melton, who missed 3 weeks early in the season with a sore back, is listed as day-to-day. The Cubs built a 6-1 lead before Pittsburgh mounted a comeback attempt with 4 runs in the final two innings. Johnny Schmitz bailed out starter Ed Head (13-10, 4.20) in the ninth for his 5th save of the season. The win moves the Cubs ahead of Pittsburgh and into second place in the National League.

The first place Philadelphia Phillies had what basically amounted to batting practice in Brooklyn, rapping out 18 hits in a 10-4 win over the Dodgers. Ray Sanders had 4 hits for the Phils while Joe Gordon and Buster Adams each homered.

In Cincinnati pinch-hitter Sam Mele delivered a 2-run double with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth giving the Reds a 3-2 win over the New York Giants. Dave Koslo had a 4-hitter over 8 innings work for New York but he did not factor in the decision. In Boston, Chuck Workman delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th to lift the Braves past St Louis 4-3.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The front running Cleveland Indians lost yesterday but St Louis and Boston failed to take advantage as they each came up on the short end of the scoreboard as well. In Cleveland, Detroit second baseman Joe Wood had 3 rbi's and Ken Heintzelman outduelled Warren Spahn in the Tigers 4-1 win over the Tribe.

6 homeruns helped the Philadelphia Athletics blast St Louis 16-11. While he didn't homer, George Kell did have a big day for the A's, getting 4 hits and driving in 4 runs.

In Boston Max Lanier threw a 5-hit shutout as the Yankees blanked the Red Sox 7-0. Gene Hermanski had 4 hits including a homer for New York.

In the other American League game Washington trimmed Chicago 6-5. Dick Errickson (9-15, 4.05) pitched 8 solid innings for the win. He left after 8 with a 6-3 lead and the Sens bullpen nearly blew the game before Marino Pieretti got a strike out, a short pop fly and a ground out to end the inning with the bases drunk with Athletics.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
PACKERS WIN SHOOTOUT WITH TEXANS
Rookie Frank *Albert sure gave Green Bay management plenty to think about. Given a chance to make his first preseason start *Albert passed for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 51-41 win over Houston. Playing the entire first half the Green Bay starting offense looked outstanding. RB Tony *Canadeo ran for 114 yards while all-pro receiver Don *Hutson had 7 catches including 2 touchdown grabs. The Houston offense was also on fire led by starting QB EJ Atoe's 226 yards passing.

The defense was another story as both teams starting units looked awful. The game was tied 24-24 at half time when the starters gave way to reserves.

GIANTS 19 STEELERS 13
The New York Giants got their first win of the preseason at the expense of winless Pittsburgh. Rookie New York signal caller Harry *Gilmer completed 16 of 22 passes for 186 yards including a pair of touchdown strikes to receiver Steve Hawkins. Veteran linebacker Mel Hein had a big game for New York, making 7 tackles and getting one of the club's 5 sacks on the day. Second year backup DE Bob Mayberry had 3 sacks for New York.

VIKINGS 13 DOLPHINS 10
The Vikings and Dolphins are both 2-1 after Minnesota won 13-10 thanks to a 39 yard touchdown pass from rookie Paul *Governalli to receiver Ken Carpenter late in the third quarter. Running back Stacy Jolley had a strong game for Miami, scoring the Dolphins only touchdown while rushing for 96 yards. Jolley also had an 18 yard reception. Dolphins first round pick, ex Notre Dame offensive tackle George *Connor had his best effort of the preseason, leading the way for Jolley and recording 3 pancakes.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA>
CELTICS RESIGN HERNANDEZ
A quiet day as the BAA free agent signing period came to a close. The biggest news was the Boston Celtics announcing that Phil Hernandez has decided to return to Boston for a 14th season. There had been rumours the former Boston College star was going to leave the New England area and sign with defending champion Dallas but Hernandez elected to finish his career in the same city he started it. Taken 5th overall by the Celtics in the 1934 draft Hernandez has played 921 games in a Boston uniform, only Cameron Belli who played in 1013 for New Orleans has appeared in more games with one team. The point guard averaged 10.3 ppg and 5.1 apg last season.

The Celtics resigned another local college product yesterday. Former Holy Cross G Holt Dodson inked a 1 year deal with Boston. He played in 24 games for Dallas and Boston last season but has played just 82 games since being drafted in the first round 3 years ago.

The Fort Wayne Pistons signed journeyman backup SF Justin Sorrells to a 1 year deal. Sorrells averaged 7.3 ppg for New Orleans last season. He has also played for Kansas City, Philadelphia and Boston since being selected from Oregon in the first round of the 1940 draft. Bigger news in Fort Wayne was the fact that the Pistons did not sign a veteran center as insurance in case Noah Baldin suffers another injury. The 6th overall pick in the 1945 draft, Baldin has been limited to just 62 games because of numerous injuries including a torn achillies tendon that cost him all but 5 games last season. All conference his final season at Oklahoma A&M the 6'10" center has outstanding potential and if he can stay healthy he is certainly a player to watch in the league.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY AUGUST 17, 1947

NOTE - I have adjusted the dates in my replay to matchup with the real life 1947 calendar. As a result today is Sunday Aug 17 rather than the 19th as it was being displayed in my report. I did this for convience for me since I am using the real college football schedule for 1947 that will begin next month.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
WILLIAMS POWERS RED SOX PAST YANKEES
Ted Williams broke out of a 2 week long slump in a big way going 4-for-4 with 2 homers and 2 doubles to pace the Boston Red Sox past the New York Yankees 9-6 in American League action. Williams drove in 4 runs to take over the league lead in rbi's. He also leads the majors with 27 homers and his .331 batting average trails only teammate Mel Almada.

The win moves the Red Sox to within 7 games of first place Cleveland after the Indians lost 3 out of four in their series with Detroit. Yesterday, Tommy Henrich had 3 hits and scored 3 runs to lead the Tigers to a 5-4 victory. Hal Trosky also had 3 hits, including a homerun for Detroit. The Indians did get some good news. Bob Feller, who injured his shoulder in his last start, is apparently healthy enough to pitch and he will get the start today against Philadelphia.

St Louis blanked the Athletics 4-0 as Wally Judnich drove in a pair of runs for the Browns. Ray Scarborough (11-10, 3.34) tossed a 5-hit shutout. The Browns are now 6 games behind Cleveland. In the only other game Mel Mazzera had 3 hits to help Washington edge Chicago 3-2 as Joe Haynes won his 15th game of the season for the Senators. Washington has won 6 out of 7 including a 5 game sweep of the White Sox and is now 7.5 games behind first place Cleveland.

NATIONAL LEAGUE<
OLSEN 3-HITS PIRATES AS CUBS WIN AGAIN
The Chicago Cubs continue to be the hottest team in baseball as they won their 7th straight game in convincing fashion, blasting Pittsburgh 12-0. Vern Olsen tossed the shutout and won his major league leading 19th game of the season in the process. Olsen also had 3 hits as did reserve shortstop Lou Merullo in a rare start. First baseman Eddie Waitkus had a pair of hits and extended his hitting streak to a career high 17 games.

The Cubs are now just 1 game out of first place after front running Philadelphia was pummelled 15-4 in Brooklyn. A 9-run 7th inning highlighted by Stan Hack's 3-run homer chased Phillies starter Max Macon (13-6, 2.82). 28 year old outfielder Luis Olmo, just recently recalled from AAA Montreal, had 6 rbi's to lead the Dodgers.

In other National League action Grady Hatton and Eddie Lukon homered as Cincinnati beat the New York Giants 8-3. Harry Feldman got his 14th win of the season for the Reds. In Boston rookie Earl Torgeson's 2-run homer helped St Louis beat his former team, the Braves, 4-2. Drafted first overall this year by Boston, Torgeson was dealt to St Louis at the deadline in a deal that brought Whitey Kurowski to Boston. Kurowski also hit a 2-run shot in the game to account for the Boston runs.

GOLF
FLECK AND FERRIER SHARE LEAD AT U.S. OPEN
With three rounds complete Jack Fleck and Jim Ferrier are the co-leaders at the United States Open Golf tournament. It was another rough day for most of the field as windy conditions coupled with an extremely difficult layout made things difficult. One person who seemed unaffected by the difficulty was Jim Ferrier. The Australian carded a 66, the second best round of the tournament and moved from 4 strokes off the pace yesterday into a share of the lead. His co-leader is Jack Fleck, a 24 year old Bettendorf, Iowa native who missed the cut in each of his 3 previous career majors.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
JAGS HAND BEARS THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS
Is there cause for concern in the camp of the Chicago Bears? The struggling Bears look like anything but the defending league champions after dropping their third straight preseason game to the Jacksonville Jaguars by a 34-33 score. The Bears defense has been awful, allowing an average of over 37 points a game in the three losses. With the starters playing virtually the entire game the Bears defense allowed nearly 500 total yards.

There is some good news in Chicago and it is all on the offensive side of the ball. League MVP Sid *Luckman completed 21 of 26 passes for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Bears offense had an outstanding performance. Three time allpro receiver Ken *Kavanaugh was in mid-season form, making 6 catches for 110 yards.

This kind of offensive display from the Bears is to be expected but the woes on the defensive side have to be of concern. Most of the same cast from last season is back with one major exception. The retirement of Danny Fortman coupled with the free agent departure of Gary Carver has left the Bears with a big hole at linebacker. So far rookies Ronnie Nussmeier and Mike Philyaw have not been able to fill the void. It is beginning to look like the Bears will regularly need to score 40 points a game if they are going to win. The good news is they have the offense that could do it.

49ERS 21 CHARGERS 17
San Francisco improved to 3-0 after spotting San Diego a 14-0 first quarter lead and rallying for a 21-17 victory. The first quarter was all Chargers, or more specifically all Bob *Fenimore. The rookie running back ran for one touchdown and caught a 33 yard pass for a second major. It was an outstanding day for *Fenimore, who had 74 yards rushing and 4 receptions in the first half. Koy Harris threw a pair of 2nd half touchdown passes for the 49ers, who were aided by 3 interceptions.

RAIDERS 23 RAMS 10
Rookie Tom Maddox threw for 209 yards while completing 21 of 29 passes to lead the Raiders to victory but it was Oakland backup running back Derrius Barber who stole the show. Barber ran for 102 yards and 1 touchdown in the win. Rookie Camp *Wilson was also impressive in the victory, catching all 6 balls thrown his way.

FALCONS 23 TITANS 20
A strong effort from QB Arnie *Herber helped the Falcons improve to 3-0. The 5th year Falcon QB completed 29 of 29 passes for 194 yards. Rookie Charlie *Trippi looked good for Tennessee starting in place of the injured Manfred Gayle. However, the Titans backup QB, Terry Kocher was picked off 3 times in the 4th quarter ending any hopes of a Tennessee comeback. Falcons first round pick SS Red *Cochran had two of the picks.

SAINTS 27 PATRIOTS 21 (OT)
Saints QB Kalimba Goode was picked off twice and completed just 2 passes but one of them was a 54 yard touchdown strike to Frank Coleman with 16 seconds remaining in overtime to give New Orleans a 27-21 win over New England. The two starting running backs, Todd Berger of the Saints and New England's Mario Glenn led their respective offenses. Berger had 125 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns while Glenn ran for 99 yards and made 6 catches for another 48 yards. New Orleans improves to 2-1 while the Pats drop their 3rd straight game.

JETS 38 SEAHAWKS 0
Steve *Van Buren ran for 141 yards and Keith Reeves threw 3 touchdown passes as the New York Jets hammered Seattle 38-0. *Van Buren also had 4 receptions for the Jets. New York's defense held the Seahawks to just 151 yards total offense while their offense racked up nearly 600 yards.

BOXING
ORTIZ HAS LITTLE TROUBLE WITH CASTILLO
Manuel Ortiz took another step towards getting another chance at the World Bantamweight title. Ortiz had little difficulty winning a unanimous decision over Mexican bantamweight champ Luis Castillo last night in San Francisco. Ortiz was in complete control of the bout and unofficially won 12 of the 15 rounds. He wore down Castillo, who ended up getting dropped in the 12th round but that was more from his own fatigue than Ortiz's punching power.

The victory improves Ortiz record to 39-2-2 and is his second straight convincing win after a pair of losses including one to Fernando Gagnon that cost Ortiz the World title. Castillo falls to 27-13-3.

SOCCER
TSN TO PROVIDE ENGLISH FIRST DIVISION RESULTS
TSN will begin publishing first division soccer fixtures and tables from England. The games will be simmed using a dice game called Quick Play soccer. After a 6 year hiatus due to the war the English First Division (there was no Premier League then) resumed play last season. Liverpool finished first in a tight race, just one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton with Stoke City 2 points off the pace. Manchester City and Burnley would make the leap to Division One this season after finishing first and second respectively in Division Two.

The season begins next Saturday with a full slate of games including defending league champion Liverpool playing host to Preston North End.

JIM FERRIER WINS U.S. OPEN
Australian Jim Ferrier shot a 2 under 69 in Sunday's final round of the U.S. Open at the St Louis Country Club. That was good enough for Ferrier to win his first career major as he finished 1 stroke ahead of 24 year old Jack Fleck. Fleck, who hails from Bettendorf, Iowa, was tied with Ferrier entering the final round but he finished the final 18 holes at 1 under par. Ferrier becomes the first Australian to win a major. Americans Herman Keiser, Skee Riegel and Herman Barron rounded out the top five. Incidentally, Ferrier did win a major in 1947 in real life when he won the PGA Championship.

The low amateur was California Scott xTibbetts who finished 14 strokes off the pace. After his final round xTibbetts, who won the US Amateur Open this year, announced that he will turn pro in January of 1948. As reigning US Amateur Open champ he is automatically granted a tour card for next year.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CUBS BEAT BUCS AGAIN. MOVE INTO FIRST PLACE TIE
The Chicago Cubs beat the Pirates for the third straight time in Pittsburgh and as a result moved into a virtual tie with the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League. The Cubs beat the Pirates 8-4 for their 8th win in a row while Pittsburgh has dropped 6 straight. The Cubs scored 5 times in the 7th inning to chase Pirates starter Preacher Roe, who has lost 3 straight decisions after starting the season 17-2. Andy Pafko homered twice for the Cubs and drove in 5 runs while Phil Rizzuto also went yard. Hank Wyse went the distance on the hill for Chicago to improve his record to 10-8.

While the Cubs were beating up Pittsburgh, Philadelphia fell for the second day in a row to last place Brooklyn. Les Webber and two relievers combined on a 6-hitter in a 6-1 Dodger victory. Philadelphia ace Charley Schanz (18-10) took the loss.

In other action Cincinnati blasted New York 8-1. Joe Dimaggio hit a pair of homers to lead the Reds. Walker Cooper had 3 hits and 5 rbi's to pace St Louis past Boston 8-3.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
BROWNS AND RED SOX GAIN ANOTHER GAME ON SLUMPING INDIANS
There may still be a pennant race in the American League as both the St Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox made up another game on Cleveland, a club that has dropped 3 straight. The 4th place Washington Senators were the only upper division club that failed to gain a game on the Indians.

In St Louis Archie McKain (13-6, 3.29) earned the win as the Browns dropped Detroit 8-2. Bruce Campbell, Eddie Robinson and Vern Stephens all homered off of losing pitcher Virgil Trucks (10-14, 2.82). Meanwhile in Boston, Earl Johnson tossed a 3-hit shutout for his 16th win of the season as Boston blanked Chicago 3-0. Babe Young had a pair of doubles and scored two runs to lead the Red Sox.

Bob Feller tied a 39 year old Cleveland Indians team record by fanning 14 batters but it wasn't enough as the Indians were blanked 3-0 by Philadelphia. Feller, who equalled the strikeout mark set by Ed Walsh Sr. in 1907, allowed just 6 hits but was outpitched by Al Williams who tossed a 4-hit shutout for the A's. Roy Cullenbine homered in the first inning for Philadelphia while Wally Westlake drove in the other two runs with a sixth inning double.

Washington out hit New York 20-11 but the Yankees came out on top with an 8-7 victory over the Senators in 11 innings. Washington tied the game at 5 when Buddy Lewis hit a 3-run homer in the sixth. New York took the lead again in the 8th and the Sens tied it with two out in the ninth on an rbi single off the bat of Cecil Travis. In the 11th the Yankees would plate 2 more on a Mike Garbark double. Washington tried to rally in the home half and got one run back but pinch-hitter Tom Turner grounded out to end the game with the tying run just 90 feet away.

BOSTON SWEEPS PLAYER OF WEEK AWARDS
Third baseman Whitey Kurowski of the Braves and Red Sox pitcher Earl Johnson were named the players of the week in their respective leagues. Kurowksi has been on fire since coming over to Boston in a trade with the Cardinals at the deadline. He hit .458 with 12 rbi's in 24 at bats last week to win his first-ever player of the week award. The 6th year pro his hitting .307 with 8 homers and 58 rbi's so far this season.

Johnson also claims player of the week honours for the first time in his career. He struck out 13 batters while winning both of his starts last week including a 3-hit shutout of Chicago yesterday. In his first year as a starter Johnson is 16-8 with a 3.19 era. He split the first 6 years of his career shuffling between the Red Sox bullpen and AAA.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
CHIEFS WIN IN OVERTIME
In the battle between Ulish Groce and Tommy *Thompson for the starting quarterback job in Kansas City it was unheralded 3rd stringer Rick Wozniak who stole the show. The 4th year pro has never thrown a regular season pass in the NFL but took over midway through the 4th quarter and marched the Chiefs into field goal range so they could tie the game with Carolina at 23 and force overtime.

In overtime Kansas City won the coin flip and Wozniak went to work, completing 4 straight passes for 73 yards including the game winning 7 yard touchdown strike to receiver Jamie Smith giving the Chiefs a 29-23 victory. The performance certainly gave Wozniak a leg up on Korey Floyd in the fight for the third string job but barring a run on injuries it will likely be the last we hear of Wozniak. The main focus in Kansas City was on Groce and *Thompson and their battle for the starting job. Groce got the start this game and completed 15-of-22 passes for 145 yards with 1 touchdown and an interception. *Thompson took over in the 3rd quarter and completed 5 of 10 passes for 116 yards with one pick. Through 3 games *Thompson seeems to have played slightly better but the guess is because he is still technically a rookie he will begin the season backing up Groce.

Groce is no slouch and really an amazing story. Undrafted in 1942 he spent the season on the Chiefs practice squad before injuries made him the starting quarterback opening week the next season. He has started every game in Kansas City since then and was rewarded with a huge signing bonus at the end of the 1945 season. The Chiefs then surprised everyone by taking former Tulsa star Tommy *Thompson with their first pick of the 1946 draft. It appeared the highly touted rookie might win the starting job from Groce last season but then *Thompson suffered a season ending injury late in the preseason. The starting job was once again Groce's and he responded by leading the Chiefs to their first ever playoff berth. Now this year *Thompson is healthy again and the competition is back on.

The Chiefs defense had a solid game against the Panthers led by rookie DT Weldon *Humble. This year's first round pick had a pair of sacks in the game and bottled up the middle all day. Where Carolina did have success was running outside and Panthers RB Keith Meade led the way with 135 yards on 25 carries. It was a good test for Meade, who after running for over 1600 yards the previous season, played just 5 games last year due to injuries.

RAVENS 31 LIONS 29
Baltimore QB John Foster was picked off three times but he also tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Ravens past Detroit 31-29. The difference in the game was an interception, but it was one thrown by Detroit backup Billy Campbell. Ravens safety Mark Smith returned it 47 yards for the winning score.

EAGLES 34 BENGALS 13
Philadelphia got it's first win of the preseason in convincing fashion as the Eagles beat up Cincinnati. Quarterback Doug Bass and running back Harley Mitchell both had outstanding games for the winners. The Bengals turned the ball over 4 times including an interception that Antoine Trafford returned 74 yards for a score. Cincinnati is also 1-2 in the preseason.

REDSKINS 29 BILLS 20
Sammy *Baugh threw for 235 yards to lead the Washington Redskins past the Buffalo Bills. Redskins receivers Wayne *Miller and Dante *Lavelli where in midseason form as they combined for 15 catches. After running for 105 yards a week ago against Tennessee, Bills first round pick Buddy *Young was limited to just 26 yards today.

BROWNS 37 BRONCOS 31
Cleveland scored the final 20 points of the game to rally past the winless Broncos in Denver. Browns QB Jeff McDonald tossed 3 touchdown passes including one to All-Pro WR Zach Kruczek, who had 10 receptions on the day. The Browns wore down the Denver defense by dominating the time of possession. Cleveland had the ball for over 37 minutes.

COWBOYS 24 CARDINALS 7
Cowboys running back Raymond Cash ran for 111 yards to lead Dallas past Arizona. The Cardinals defense played well but the offense could not get untracked. Between them Arizona quarterbacks Trent Fenney and Tony Marsalis completed just 9 of 33 pass attempts while starting running back Tuffey *Leemans was held to just 37 yards on 21 carries.

It is expected *Graham will be the starting quarterback when the regular season begins.

BOXING
BUSY NIGHT OF BOXING ACTION AHEAD
It is an unusually busy Monday night in the boxing world with a number of bouts featuring up and coming pugilists along with a matchup involving a couple of top flyweights.

In Belfast, Ireland hometown boy Rinty Monaghan will face Glasgow native Vic Herman in a bout between flyweight contenders. Monaghan, 17-4-1, is rated the 6th best worldwide in his weight class. He is coming off a win in March over Japan's Speedy Akira. Herman is 14-4-2 and ranked 9th in the world. His most recent fight was a 9th round TKO loss to another top 10 fighter in Peter Kane.

There will be a battle of German heavyweights in Munich as Jurgen xHucke will face Arno Kolblin. The 21 year old xHucke is making his third professional appearance. His record is 1-1. Kolblin is 5-16 in his career. On the same card two German middleweights will make their professional debuts as 19 year old Hans Stretz will face 25 year Leo Starosch.

Another middleweight bout will pit veteran Freddie Apostoli against young Rocco xDiSaldo. Apostoli is making his first postwar appearance but the 35 year old saw plenty of ring action in the early 40's. The 24 year old DiSaldo is 0-2 in his young career.

In Sydney, promising Australian welterweight George Barnes makes his professional debut against Flashy Sebastian, who hails from the Philippines. The 29 year old Sebastian is 7-18-1 in his career. On the same card 18 year old Leo Espinosa of the Philippines meets Australian Johnny Gleeson in the professional debut for each of them. Espinosa is considered to have some potential in the bantamweight division.

Promising featherweight makes his debut tonight in his hometown of Philadelphia. 18 year old Percy Bassett meets New York City journeyman Ted Christie. Christie has an unimpressive to say the least postwar record - he is 5-33.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
CUBS FINALLY LOSE. FALL 12-6 TO PIRATES
Streaks came to an end for both Pittsburgh and Chicago after the Pirates beat the Cubs 12-6 at Forbes Field. Entering the game Chicago had won 8 straight including the last 3 from Pittsburgh while the Pirates were in midst of a 6 game slide. Tony Cuccinello had 4 hits including a homer and drove in 5 runs to lead the Pirates. Bob Elliott and Arky Vaughan each had 3 hit games. Vaughan and Elliott are each riding 16 game hitting streaks. Meanwhile Eddie Waitkus of the Cubs went two-for-four and now has had a base hit in 18 straight games. All are a far cry for the major league record of 39 games set by the Pirates Ginger Beaumont in 1903 and equalled by Detroit's Charlie Gehringer in 1931.

The loss drops the Cubs a game behind Philadelphia while the Pirates sit two and half games off the pace. The Phillies salvaged a split of their 4 game series with last place Brooklyn by taking a 5-2 victory in yesterday's series finale. Vic Lombardi(14-10, 3.21) pitched 8 solid innings for the win. Catcher Bennie Warren drove in a pair of runs.

In other National League play Cincinnati hammered New York 10-0 as Joe Medwick had a 3-hit game and pitcher Stan Ferens (12-6, 3.28) tossed a complete game 6 hit shutout. Rookie Earl Torgeson had the best game of his young career, getting 5 hits and driving in 4 runs as St Louis blasted Boston 7-0.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
The American League race continues to tighten as first place Cleveland lost for the fourth straight game. Rudy York had a pair of triples and drove in 3 runs as Philadelphia blanked the Tribe 4-0. Mort Cooper pitched a 7-hit shutout for his 6th win of the season. Bill Lohrman lost for just the second time this year.

Second place St Louis failed to gain ground as the Browns dropped a 7-0 decision to Detroit. Hal Trosky had 3 hits including a 3-run homer for the Tigers. Al Jurisch (18-9, 3.67) tossed a complete game 3-hitter for the win. Third place Boston also fell, losing 2-1 at home to Chicago thanks to a 9th inning rbi single from the White Sox' Mike McCormick. Andy Karl pitched 8 innings of 4 hit ball but did not factor in the decision as he was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 8th with the score tied at 1.

The other American League was in Washington where Milo Candini (14-12, 3.46) and 2 relievers combined to stop the Yankees 4-2. Catcher Al Evans had 3 hits and a pair of rbi's for the Senators who have won 8 of their last 11 games and are within 6.5 games of first place Cleveland.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
OTTO *GRAHAM LEADS BUCS PAST COLTS
In his first week as a starting quarterback Tampa Bay Buccaneers signal caller Otto *Graham displayed why many compare him to Bears great Sid *Luckman. Graham tossed 3 second quarter touchdown passes to lead the Bucs to a 28-17 victory over Indianapolis last night. In all he completed 17 of 28 passes for 168 yards while under intense pressure. If there is a negative to the rookie's performance it is that he had a tendancy to hang on to the ball too long. *Graham was sacked 4 times and knocked down countless others in his two quarters of action. The Bucs offensive line is suspect and Tampa better be careful their future star does not take too much of a beating.

Second year running back Darren McLeod helped the Bucs offense by running for 103 yards on 11 carries in the second half. Another second year Bucs back, ex-Ohio State star Keyshawn Smith ran for 79 yards in the first half. The Tampa defense looked great against the pass, getting decent pressure and coming up with 3 interceptions. However they had some issues stopping the run.

Colts first round pick Bob *Chappuis, the former Michigan star, ran for 101 yards after seeing little action the first two games. Starting QB Eric Poppinga was awful following solid performances each of the two previous weeks. The free agent lured away from the Giants in the off-season completed just 10 of 21 pass attempts and was picked off twice. 10 year veteran LB Ron James was one of the few bright spots on the Colts defense. He recorded 9 tackles and equalled his total all of last season by sacking Graham twice.

The victory keeps the Buccaneers unbeaten and they will finish the preseason next Sunday against another unbeaten team, the Baltimore Ravens. The 2-1 Colts host 2-1 Oakland on Saturday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
UTAH IS THE CLASS OF THE MOUNTAIN STATES CONFERENCE
The best team in the Mountain States conference this year should be the University of Utah. The Utes out of conference schedule is quite favourable and there is a chance they could go undefeated. With a solid defense and a tremendous offense led by HB Frank *Nelson, Utah should will have little trouble winning the conference. In addition to the running game the Utes also have a solid quarterback in senior Cannon *Parkinson and a decent pair of receivers in juniors Bernard *Hafen and Ralph *Olsen. Senior Middle Guard Bill *Angelos anchors the defense with help from junior MLB Bob *Summerhays.

In addition to Nelson, there is another running back to keep an eye on. Robert *Hazelhurst of Denver is considered a possible first round NFL draft pick. Denver has lost some key contributers and it will be very unlikely for them to repeat as conference champs. Last season Denver flirted with finishing the year in the top 25 but a Raisin Bowl blowout loss to Hardin-Simmons ended those hopes. This year Denver and Colorado should battle for second spot in the conference. Colorado OT Paul *Briggs and Utah State LB Frank *Williams are two other players to keep an eye on this season.

This will be the final year of the Mountain States Conference as the University of Colorado has announced it's plans to join the Big 6. The remaining 6 members of the Mountain States Conference are going to remain together but will change the name to the Skyline Conference next year.

BOXING
PERCY BASSETT WINS DEBUT BY KNOCKOUT
18 year old Philadelphia featherweight Percy Bassett has quite a future in store for himself if last night's professional debut is any indication. Bassett came out swinging against veteran New York pugilist Ted Christie and pounded him into submission before the first round was over. Christie never landed a punch and was out cold when Bassett's final shot, a devastating uppercut, made contact with the New Yorker's chin.

In other action from a busy Monday night in boxing. Scotland's Vic Herman scored a 9th round knockout of Irishman Rinty Monaghan in a bout in Belfast between two flyweight contenders. Herman improves to 15-4-2 and is ranked 6th in the division. The loss drops Monaghan's record to 17-5-1. Monaghan has lost 3 of his last 4 bouts with his only victory coming by TKO when Speedy Akira broke his hand in their bout.

In Munich heavyweight Jurgen xHucke scored a technical knockout over Arno Kolblin. xHucke improves to 2-1 and may be in line for a shot at the German title. On the same card middleweights Leo Starosch and Hans Stretz fought to a draw. One judge had them even while the other two officials looked like they were watching different fights. The first had Starosch winning 78-74 and the second scored it 79-73 in favor of Stretz. It was the professional debut for each of them.

Still with middleweights, veteran Freddie Apostoli came out of retirement and made short work of young Rocco xDiSaldo. Apostoli won the scheduled 8 round bout when the referee stopped it in the 6th. Apostoli had handily won all 5 rounds leading up to the stoppage. The San Francisco native had not fought since the sport was reformatted following WWII but he did see plenty of action in the thirties and early-40's. Some had felt xDiSaldo, who made his mark fighting on the streets of Chicago, would do well in the sport but he falls to 0-3.

Finally in Sydney Australian welterweight George Barnes won his pro debut but just barely, claiming a split decision 12 round victory over Flashy Sebastian of the Philippines. In the co-feature Philippino Bantamweight Leo Espinosa scored a unanimous decision over Australian Johnny Gleeson in their 8 round bout. It was the debut pro fight for each of them.

Tonight, middleweight Lester Felton makes his pro debut. Recently rated the 6th best young boxer in the world, the 18 year old Detroit native will make his debut in the Motor City against Canadian Len Wadsworth. Wadsworth likely will not provide much of a test for Felton as the Torontonian is 2-27 as a professional. One other bout features German heavyweight champion Hein Ten-Hoff defending his national title against challenger Willie Muller. Ten-Hof is 18-7 in his career while Muller is 2-0.

GOLF
HOGAN DOMINATING AFTER 15 EVENTS ON PGA TOUR
With just 3 regular events remaining in the 1947 PGA schedule there is little doubt that Ben Hogan will be the leading money winner on the tour. Hogan finished tied for 6th in this past weekend's US Open and earned $1000 for his efforts to boost him past the $20,000 mark in season earnings. A winner in 6 of the 15 events and never missing the cut, Hogan has nearly double the prize money of the number two golfer, Sam Snead.

Rounding out the top 5 are 'The Missouri Mortician' Herman Keiser, who jumped up the chart with a win in the British Open and a third place finish at the US Open. Fourth place belongs to Jay Hebert who won in back to back events at New Orleans and Dallas in the spring. South African Bobby Locke, who claimed victory at Phoenix, is fifth.

In real life the 1947 money winner was Jimmy Demaret who earned $27,936. Demaret sits 7th at this stage of the replay. The Houston native has 4 top five finishes but has yet to win an event this year. The next stop on the tour is Tucson.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHILLIES WORK OVERTIME TO BEAT REDS
Ray Sanders delivered an rbi double with one out in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies past Cincinnati 2-1. The victory keeps the Phillies 1 game ahead of the Chicago Cubs atop the National League. Hugh Mulcahy (14-12, 3.23) pitched 8 scoreless innings for the Phillies who led the game 1-0 until reliever Lefty Wilkie allowed a pinch-hit homerun off the bat of Reds rookie Sam Mele (.212,2,12) with two out in the bottom of the ninth. It was just the second homerun of his career for Mele. Another Reds rookie, Art Houtteman (11-11, 4.84) pitched 7 strong innings before leaving the game with an arm injury. Houtteman was placed on the DL and will miss two weeks.

Phil Rizzuto hit his 14th homer of the season and Ed Head pitched a 5-hitter to improve his record to 14-10 as the Cubs beat Boston 6-1. Cubs 1B Eddie Waitkus had 2 hits to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh continues to slide. The Bucs have dropped 7 of their last 8 after falling 5-3 at home to St Louis. 32 year old Xavier Rescigno pitched 8 innings for the Cards to earn just his 5th career victory. Legendary Pirate hurler Cliff Melton took the loss to drop to 14-8 on the season. Enos Slaughter had 3 hits including a homer and a double to lead the Cardinals. In the only other National League game Stan Hack's 10th inning pinch-hit homer gave Brooklyn a 5-4 win over the New York Giants.

SPAHN 4 HITS ATHLETICS
Warren Spahn (15-10, 3.26) tossed a 4-hitter to help the Cleveland Indians trim the Philadelphia Athletics 3-2 in American League action. Jeff Heath had 3 hits and an rbi to lead the Indians offense. In other American League action Stan Spence hit a 2-run homer and Rube Melton went the distance for his 12th win of the season as Boston topped Chicago 3-1. A grand slam off the bat of Bruce Campbell lifted the St Louis Browns to a 9-4 win over Detroit and Max Lanier pitched a 5-hit complete game as New York dropped Washington 5-1.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
BIG SIX CONFERENCE PREVIEW
This could be a big year for the Big Six Conference as two of the teams are rated in the preseason top 20 and a third could be by years end. Last year only Oklahoma finished ranked in the top 20 and the Sooners were a dissappointing 17th after losing the Orange Bowl to North Carolina 27-23. This year the Sooners start the season ranked 12th in the nation. The Kansas Jayhawks also have high hopes after finishing 6-3-1 a year ago. Kansas is ranked 14th in the preseason poll. The the conference title could well be decided Saturday, October 18th when the two schools meet in Norman. However, Missouri hopes to have something to say about that. The Tigers received some consideration but did not quite make the preseason top 20.

Oklahoma is led on offense by junior quarterback Jack *Mitchell, senior RB Charlie *Sarratt and senior tight end Jim *Tyree. Junior OG Buddy *Burris anchors a solid offensive line. The key contributers on defense are lineman Ruben Castor and defensive back Joe *Golding. Kansas also has a strong offense behind senior QB Ray *Evans and wide receiver Otto *Schnellbacher. *Schnellbacher is also captain of the Jayhawks basketball team and may be drafted by both the NFL and the BAA. Fullback Forrest *Griffith will handle the rushing duties along with Evans. Linebacker Don *Ettinger is the Jayhawks best player and quite likely a first round NFL pick.

Missouri has high hopes for a strong season from junior QB Harold 'Bus' *Entsminger but there defense led by senior linebacker Ed *Quirk is inexperienced. One other player to keep an eye on is Nebraska defensive lineman Carl *Samuelson who may well be the first player from the conference selected in next year's NFL draft.

This will be the final year the conference will be known as the Big Six. The University of Colorado has been accepted as the seventh member in football and the Buffaloes will leave the Mountain States Conference at the end of this season. Next year the group will be known as the Big Seven Conference.

BIG SIX PLAYER IN THE SPOTLIGHT : OTTO SCHNELLBACHER KANSAS
Well before Dion Sanders and Bo Jackson there were plenty of two sport stars. Recently selected QB Otto Graham of Tampa is a perfect example although Graham decided to give up basketball and concentrate solely on his NFL career. Another great example is Otto *Schnellbacher who captained the University of Kansas in both football and basketball in 1947.

In real life the native of Sublette, Kansas was known as "The Double Threat from Sublette" because of his proficiency in both sports. He led the Jayhawks footballers to a conference title and an Orange Bowl berth in 1947 and was a two-time all conference split end and an all-american his final year. He surpassed that in basketball by being named all-conference 4 times. He also played both pro football and basketball, splitting 4 seasons with the NY Yankees of the All-America Football Conference and the NFL's New York Giants, primarily as a defensive back. Schnellbacher played one year in the Basketball Association of America with St Louis and Providence.

In my allsports replay Schnellbacher may have a chance to be an all-american in both basketball and football this year. Kansas has a solid football team this year and may have an outside shot at a national championship. In basketball, the Jayhawks had to settle for the NIT last year after 3 straight trips to the NCAA's. Schnellbacher led the club in scoring and assists and was named to his first Big 8 All-Conference team. With 4 starters returning this could be a big season for the Jayhawk basketball squad as well. I can not track individual college football stats except for their senior season so only Schnellbacher's college basketball stats appear below.

BOXING
FELTON WINS PRO DEBUT
It more resembled wrestling than a boxing match but middleweight Lester Felton won his professional debut by easily outpointing journeyman Len Wadsworth in their bout in Detroit. The 18 year old Felton did a nice job picking his spots for much of the fight but the crowd grew increasingly frustrated by his tendancy to hold on to his opponent and slow the bout to a standstill. Wadsworth, with a 2-28 record, seemed more interested in collecting a paycheque than fighting and was more than happy to dance with Felton instead of box. All in all it was not a great effort by Felton, who recently was named one of the top 10 newcomers to the pro ranks.

One other bout of note as Hein Ten-Hoff defeated Willi Muller for the vacant German Heavyweight title. Ten-Hoff won by a 14th round TKO and improved his career record to 19-7. The title was vacated when Walter Neusel, who also currently holds the European Heavyweight belt, declined to defend his German championship. Neusel will be in action tonight in Edinburgh, Scotland when he defends his European title against Scottish native Manuel Abrew. The 34 year old Abrew has fought just twice since the war as he declined to enter the postwar tournament.

In other action tonight lightweights Lulu Constantino and Arthur King will meet in Toronto. King, the Canadian champion at age 21 and a Toronto native, sports a pro record of 14-2. He is considered the 10th best lightweight in the world. Constantino will be a real challenge for the young Canadian as the 26 year old Far Rockaway, New York native is also 14-2 and ranked 5th in the world. On the same card two other Canadians will make their pro debuts. 19 year old Halifax lightweight Richard 'Kid' Howard faces Massachusetts veteran fighter Jackie Parker while heavyweight Don Eagle will take on Clint Conway, who hails from New York City.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PHILS TITLE HOPES SUFFER SERIOUS BLOW
The Philadelphia Phillies learned today they will be without starting pitcher Max Macon for likely the rest of the season. The 31 year old Macon(13-6, 2.80) suffered a torn ligament in the elbow on his throwing arm in Philadelphia's 2-1 loss at Cincinnati yesterday. There is a slight chance he will be able to pitch in the postseason should the Phillies qualify. Despite getting outhit 12-7 the Reds managed to beat the Phillies thanks to some clutch pitching from Harry Feldman (15-8, 4.44) who put himself in a few jams but always managed to find a way out of them. Ford Garrison had 3 hits and an rbi to lead the Reds. Ron Northey had a 3-hit game for the Phillies who are once again tied with Chicago for top spot in the National League.

Vern Olsen became the first 20 game winner in the majors this season by pitching the Cubs past the Braves 3-2 in Boston. Olsen (20-6, 2.72) allowed 8 hits and just 1 earned run with Johnny Schmitz pitching the ninth for his 6th save of the season. Backup catcher Tony Giuliani, who had a pair of 3 hit games last week, had another strong game with a pair of hits including a 2-run triple for the Cubs.

Buddy Hassett hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 12th inning to lead St Louis past Pittsburgh 4-2. The Cards had tied the game in the top of the 8th on a 2-run shot from Enos Slaughter. The loss drops the Pirates 3.5 games behind the co-leaders. In the other National League game Bob Scheffing's rbi single in the 8th snapped a 1-1 tie and helped the Brooklyn Dodgers past the New York Giants 3-1. Mel Ott's 4th homer of the season accounted for the New York run. It was the 409th homer of the 38 year old Ott's career. He is 5th alltime in that category. He is also in the top 5 in rbi's and just 2 walks from passing Eddie Collins to move in to 5th place alltime in bases on balls.

GUTTERIDGE GIVES TRIBE EXTRA INNING WIN
Cleveland second baseman Don Gutteridge had 3 hits including a game winning rbi single with 2 out in the 11th inning to give Cleveland a 6-5 victory over the visiting New York Yankees. Jeff Heath and Mike Tresh also had 3 hit games for the Tribe, who remain 5 games ahead of the St Louis Browns atop the American League.

Wally Judnich hit two homers and drove in 5 rbis while Bruce Campbell had 4 rbi's as the Browns blasted Chicago 13-7. In Boston, shortstop Johnny Hudson hit a 3-run homer in the first inning to lead the Red Sox past Detroit 5-2 while Ernie Kish drove in 4 runs in Philadelphia's 6-1 victory at Washington.

ABREW SHOCKS NEUSEL FOR EUROPEAN HEAVYWEIGHT CROWN
With a huge hometown crowd cheering him on and perhaps some questionable scoring, Scotland native Manny Abrew won a shocking decision over German Walter Neusel to claim the European Heavyweight title. The French judge scored the fight even while the British judge and the referee each gave Abrew a one-point victory. To say the 34 year old who was making just his third postwar fight was an upset winner is a huge understatement. Neusel, who knocked out Britian's Bruce Woodcock to win the title last March, falls to 23-7.

Here are the top 5 contenders for the European Title, a belt that no titleholder has ever been able to keep in his first defense.

CHAMPION Manuel Abrew Edinburgh, Scotland 3-0
1: Hein Ten-Hof Oldenberg,Germany 19-7 (German Champ)
2: Stephane Olek Paris,France 17-13
3: Johnny Williams Barmouth,Wales 22-7-1
4: Walter Neusel Bochum,Germany 23-7
5: Bruce Woodcock Doncaster, England 13-6-1 (UK Champ)

Canadian Lightweight champ Arthur King was in action last night but in a non-title bout. King moved closer to a date with World Champion Ike Williams after winning a unanimous decision over Lulu Constantino at Maple Leaf Gardens. The victory improves King's record to 15-2 and moves the Toronto native into the top 5 in the lightweight division world wide. Constantino drops to 14-3. On the same card Canadian lightweight Richard Howard and heavyweight Don Eagle won their professional debuts.

One other bout of note yesterday German lightheavyweight Rudel xDietrich won a unanimous decision in his 6 round bout with Detroit native Johnny Vorce. xDietrich improves to 2-1 while Vorce is 0-4 in his career.

The highlight of tonight's boxing schedule is the card from Madison Square Garden. The main event pits the Raging Bull, Jake LaMotta against Holman Williams while a co-feature will have world middleweight champ Tony Zale face relative unknown Joey DeJohn in a non-title bout. Zale won the title in an upset over previously undefeated LaMotta last January and then successfully defended it with a TKO of George Abrams in the 15th round of their bout in July. Zale has agreed to meet the winner of the LaMotta-Williams fight following his rematch with Abrams at the end of September. Between them Jake LaMotta and Holman Williams are 42-2. Each fighter has lost just once - LaMotta to Zale in January while Williams lost a 15 round unanimous decision to LaMotta in the finals of the post-war tournament.

Also on the same card will be the pro debut of welterweight Carmen Basilio. Basilio will meet Jimmy Evans in a 6 round bout. Basilio was recently rated the third best young boxing prospect in the world.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
BORDER CONFERENCE
Hardin-Simmons is once again the class of the Border Conference. After finishing a perfect 10-0 Hardin-Simmons defeated Denver in the Raisin Bowl and finished the season ranked 13th in the nation. They remain 13th in the preseason poll released last week. The top player for the Cowboys is senior RB Wilton *Davis. Tackle John *Treadaway is a tremendous blocker and in Tom *Johnson Hardin-Simmons may have the best punter in the nation.

This is a conference full of great running backs. In addition to *Davis there is Ralph *Earhart of Texas Tech, UTEP's Ed *Smith and Jerry *Nuzim of New Mexico State. The University of New Mexico, Texas Tech and Arizona led by QB Fred *Enke should fight it out for second place.

BORDER CONFERENCE PLAYER IN THE SPOTLIGHT : FRED ENKE ARIZONA QB
The son of the University of Arizona basketball coach who bared the same name, Enke is making his mark on the gridiron rather than the hardwood. He was a three-sport star at Tucson High during the early 1940s before joining the Wildcats where he has played football and basketball. This will be his first season as the starting QB at Arizona and he has spent parts of the past 3 years coming off the basketball Wilcats bench for his father. He is likely a third or fourth round NFL pick.

In real life Enke Jr was a Hall of Fame athlete at the University of Arizona, and the first quarterback from Arizona’s high school ranks to start in the National Football League. At Arizona he lettered in football, basketball and baseball, and played on three Border Conference championship basketball teams coached by his father. He was named all-conference as a quarterback in 1947, was a third team All-American, and set Wildcat school records for total offense with 2,973 yards. Enke played professional football from 1948 to 1954, with the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Colts.

GOLF<
TUCSON OPEN BEGINS TODAY
The 1947 PGA Tour enters the home stretch as Tucson National Country Club will act as the host of the third annual Tucson Open. Jimmy Demaret is the defending champion and while his place is pretty secure in the top 20, many other golfers are scrambling to finish in the top 20 money winners and qualify for the postseason Tournament of Champions which will have the richest purse in golf history.

Following this stop there are just two more regular events remaining in the golf season. Next week Salt Lake City will be the site of the Western Open before the season concludes in Los Angeles with the LA Open.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
RED SOX POISED TO MAKE MOVE
The Boston Red Sox nudged ahead of the St Louis Browns and into second place in the American League yesterday. Next the Red Sox set their sights on the first place Cleveland Indians as those two clubs prepare to meet 7 times in the next 10 days. The Indians, who were off yesterday, hold a 5.5 game lead on Boston. Cleveland has won just 3 of it's last 8 games while the Red Sox have taken 8 of their last 10 including a 5-1 win over Detroit yesterday. Earl Johnson pitched a complete game 2 hitter for his 17th victory of the season. Today Andy Karl will attempt to become the second 17 game winner on the Red Sox but he will have a tough assignment since league era leader Bill Lohrman (13-2, 1.62) suits up for Cleveland.

In other American League action yesterday Buddy Lewis hit a dramatic 3-run homer with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th to lift Washington past Philadelphia 4-2. Fred Hutchinson earned his 16th win of the season in that game by pitching a complete game 4-hitter. Meanwhile in St Louis, Bill Fleming of the White Sox pitched his first career shut out as Chicago blanked the Browns 7-0.

There were late inning heroics for both Chicago and Philadelphia in National League play and as a results the Cubs and Phillies remain deadlocked atop the loop. Harold Clift's 3-run homer in the top of the 9th gave Chicago a 5-2 win in Boston. In Cincinnati, little used journeyman outfielder Le grant Scott delivered an rbi single in the 11th inning to help Philadelphia past the Reds 4-3. Del Ennis for the Phillies and Joe Medwick of the Reds each had 4 hits in the game.

In Pittsburgh, Preacher Roe suffered his 4th straight loss but you can hardly blame the Bucs hurler for the loss. Roe allowed just 2 runs and 7 hits but that was enough to drop his record to 17-6 after the Cardinals pulled out a 2-1 victory. Johnny Hutchings and 2 relievers combined on a 3-hitter for the Cards. In the other game Pee Wee Reese drove in a pair of runs to help seventh place Brooklyn past last place New York 5-4.

BOXING
WILLIAMS WINS SPLIT DECISION OVER LAMOTTA
Holman Williams avenged his only career loss by winning a split decision victory over Jake LaMotta in a spirited battle of highly ranked middleweights at Madision Square Garden. Williams controlled the fight early before LaMotta made a huge charge in the later rounds but fell just short of knocking Williams out. Williams, at 28-1, suffered his only loss at the hands of LaMotta in the post-war tournament title match last September. He will get a title shot in December against Tony Zale assuming Zale wins his Oct 2nd rematch with George Abrams. LaMotta, who lost the title to Zale in January, falls to 15-2.

Speaking of Zale, on the same fight card he won an easy unanimous decision in an 8 round bout with journeyman Joey DeJohn. Zale sent DeJohn to the canvas twice in the bout and was awarded all 8 rounds by each of the judges.

On the undercard highly touted ex-Marine Carmen Basilio was the victim of a questionable decision as his bout with Jimmy Evans was declared a majority draw. The announcement was booed loudly by the Madison Square Garden crowd which felt the young welterweight had done more than enough to win the 6-round bout. Basilio did appear to have the fight in hand but his performance was far from the dominating effort we were expecting from his professional debut. In real life Basilio made his pro debut against Evans and won by a third round knockout.

The big fight tonight takes place in Philadelphia where Jimmy Carter, the third ranked lightweight in the world meets 6th raked Orlando Zulueta. Zulueta, with a record of 12-2-1, is the Cuban Champion. Carter, a 24 year old from New York City, is 15-4. He suffered a unanimous decision loss to Zulueta during the early stages of the post-war tournament.

Hebert has a 3 stroke lead on Jack Burke Jr and defending champion Jimmy Demaret. The top amateur is 24 year old Boston native Harry xWhistler, who sits five strokes off the pace at -3.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
SOUTHERN CONFERENCE PREVIEW

1946 was a banner year for the Southern Conference with 3 schools finishing the season ranked in the top 14 including undefeated North Carolina at 11-0 and a winner in the Orange Bowl. The Tar Heels finished the season as the 4th ranked team in the nation and were more than a little dissapointed they did not end up ahead of Notre Dame and Michigan, who each lost 1 game. North Carolina starts this season off as the only ranked team from the Southern Conference. The Tar Heels may be hard pressed to hang on to their number 7 ranking with non conference games against Georgia, Texas and Tennessee. In addition, the hole created with the graduation of All-America QB DeMarco Dickinson will be difficult to replace. In his place will be sophomore Charlie *Justice. A running back as a freshman, Justice makes the switch to quarterback this season. Sophomore WR Art *Weiner should help make Justice's transition to QB easier, as well senior FB Walt Pupa.

William & Mary has a chance to go to a bowl game for the second straight year. Team captain Bob *Steckroth is one of the best receivers in the nation. The Tribe also have an outstanding offensive line led by senior guard Knox *Ramsay and junior center Tommy *Thompson who should make life easy for junior running back Jack *Cloud.

North Carolina State possesses one of the best defensive backs in the nation in senior Les *Palmer but the Wolfpack will have their work cut out for them if they wish to duplicate last season's success.

PRESS RELEASE:
OLYMPIC GAMES WILL JOIN ALL-SPORTS REPLAY

Thanks to a site I located today I now have a complete list of results for all athletes in the 1948 summer olympic games. That information combined with some ideas from an Olympic text game posted at Table-top Sports will allow me to create a simple game designed to generate results for the Olympics. I will likely just focus on swimming along with track and field but I may also have some ideas to include other sports as well. I also have partial results for the winter olympics and am considering adding it as well but it will be far less detailed than the summer games.

Either way, I think with the information that allows me to include the Olympics I now have every major sporting event of the era covered. The winter olympics at St Moritz will begin Jan 30, 1948 while the summer games in London start next July.

RED SOX CLOSE GROUND ON INDIANS WITH EXTRA-INNING WIN
Al Zarilla and Ben Steiner delivered rbi's in the top of the 11th innning to lift the Boston Red Sox past Cleveland 3-1 and move them to within 4.5 games of the front running Indians. The game started as a tremendous pitching duel between Boston's Andy Karl (16-7, 3.90) and Cleveland ace Bill Lohrman (13-2, 1.59). The two starters each gave way entering the 9th inning with the score tied at 1. At that point there had only been 5 hits in the ballgame.

The Indians had taken the lead in the bottom of the 6th when Andy Karl allowed 2 singles and a pair of walks including one to catcher Mike Tresh with the bases loaded. Karl made up for it with his bat a half inning when his rbi single off Lohrman scored Roy Partee. Boston infielder Johnny Pesky, with 3, was the only player on either side to get more than one base hit. Tex Hughson (7-9) got the win in relief while Ed Klieman (3-4) was tagged with the loss.

Milo Candini allowed just 3 hits over 8 innings to record his 15th victory of the season as Washington shaded the Browns 3-2 at St Louis. In the only other game Danny Litwhiler regained the American League rbi lead with 3 as Chicago blasted Philadelphia 11-3.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Both of the National League co-leaders lost yesterday allowing the third place Pittsburgh Pirates to creep a little closer. Arky Vaughan drove in a pair of runs as the Pirates squeked past St Louis 4-3. Bill Salkeld's rbi single in the bottom of the 9th plated Vaughan with the game's winning run. Chicago was beaten 6-2 in Boston as Braves hurler Steve Gromek went the distance to improve his record to 16-8. Ford Garrison and Johnny Mize each had 3 rbi's as fourth place Cincinnati knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies 9-1. In the other game Carl Furillo drove in 5 runs to help Brooklyn outslug the New York Giants 16-9.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
BEARS GET FIRST PRESEASON WIN BUT AT A PRICE
The good news for the defending champion Chicago Bears is their defense played much better in a 35-13 pasting of New England, which earned Chicago it's first win of the preseason. The bad news is the Bears lost starting WR Robert Feeley for at least two months with a torn knee ligament. The 4th year receiver had 63 catches including 12 touchdown grabs a year ago. On the positive side the Bears do have some depth at wideout including 2nd round draft pick Jim *Keane. *Keane, who caught passes from Otto *Graham at Northwestern a year ago, will be the number 3 receiver while 3rd year man Matt Sikahema moves into a starting role alongside all-pro Ken *Kavanaugh. Sikahema had 46 catches a year ago. The Bears open the regular season next Sunday at home to Philadelphia. New England, which finished the preseason 0-4, hopes for better luck in their season opener at San Diego next Thursday night.

In other action rookie QB Paul *Governali passed for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns to help Minnesota edge Jacksonville 37-35. Both clubs finished the preseason with 3-1 records. The Vikings host the Giants while the Jags travel to Pittsburgh in next Sunday's season openers for the two squads.

Art Sampson returned a punt 90 yards for a score in a 17 point first quarter outburst by the Dallas Cowboys, who coasted to a 23-10 win in Atlanta. Rookie Johnny *Clement ran for 89 yards and last seasons offensive rookie of the year Raymond Cash gained 61 on the ground to lead the Dallas offense. Both teams finished the preseason at 3-1. Dallas visits Green Bay next Sunday while Atlanta travels to Arizona.

GOLF
DEMARET AND BURKE TIED FOR LEAD AT TUCSON OPEN
Defending champion Jimmy Demaret and Jack Burke Jr. are the co-leaders after two rounds of the Tucson Open. The big story was the collapse of first round leader Jay Hebert who, the day after carding an 8 under 64, saw his score balloon with a round of 79 on Friday. Tommy Bolt and Johnny Bulla are tied for second two strokes behind the co-leaders and the ever dangerous Ben Hogan lurks 4 off the pace. Among those who failed to make the cut you can include the name of Sam Snead who finished at 3 over par. Three amateurs made the field including US Amateur champ Scott xTibbetts who just snuck in at plus one. The low amateur through 2 rounds is William Scarborough III at 2 under par.

BOXING
GRECO WINS CANADIAN WELTERWEIGHT CROWN
Montreal native Johnny Greco claimed the vacant Canadian Welterweight title with a unanimous decision over Gus Mell at the Montreal Forum. The 24 year old Greco improves his post-war record to 13-12-1. He is not considered a serious world title contender. Mell, who also hails from Montreal, falls to 11-21-4 with the loss.

In other boxing action last night the world's 3rd ranked lightweight won in a bout in New York City. New Yorker Jimmy Carter improves to 16-4 with a 12 round majority decision over Cuban Orlando Zulueta. Carter will likely get a shot at the winner of the Ike Williams-Art Aragon bout which is slated for Friday September 12th. Williams, the World Lightweight Champion, is a perfect 20-0. Carter has not faced Williams but he did lose a unanimous decision to Aragon during the post-war tournament qualifying stage. Carter's win over Zulueta avenged another qualify stage loss for the New York native. Zulueta's record drops to 12-3-1.

Highlighting tonight's action is a European Featherweight title matchup between Ray Famechon and Ronnie Clayton. Famechon makes his first appearance since being totally outclassed by Willie Pep in a world title fight last April. The 24 year old Clayton, sporting a 27-12-3 record, gets his first shot at the European belt.

thanks. Not quite sure how good the olympic games I create will be but I think I have a good basic plan in place for the design of each game. I have already tested basketball and yachting and got some pretty good results for each.

Events like hockey, soccer, basketball and all racing events will be easy to create a game for. However, I am still at a loss how I will create simple little dice games to simulate the figure skating, gymnastics and field events.

But I have a lot of time to come up with a plan.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
BLACK HAWKS TRADE BENTLEY TO TORONTO
The Chicago Black Hawks have shocked the hockey world by dealing the reigning NHL scoring leader to Toronto in a 7 player deal. Bentley and Cy Thomas head to the Leafs in exchange for the Flying Forts line of Gaye Stewart, Bud Poile and Gus Bodnar along with defensemen Bob Goldham and Ernie Dickens.

Bentley was the first all-star team center and won the Lady Byng Award last season but the aging Hawks finished dead last with just 17 wins in 60 games. Hawks General Manager Johnny Gottselig felt the deal was necessary to allow his club to build for the future. The trade gives Toronto the strongest center ice combination in the league with Syl Apps, Teeder Kennedy and Bentley. Bentley had 37 goals and a league high 52 assists for Chicago last season. Cy Thomas spent last season with Edmonton of the Western Canada Senior League.

The Hawks depth is instantly upgraded with the addition of the three Fort William, Ontario natives. Gaye Stewart had 26 points and played most of the season at left wing with Gus Bodnar in the middle and Bud Poile on the right side. Poile had 23 points last year while Bodnar tallied 15. In the playoffs Stewart and Poile were teamed with Ted Kennedy and were a major reason why the Leafs forced Detroit to 7 games in the Stanley Cup finals. Stewart had 7 goals and 2 assists while Poile also had 9 playoff points. Bodnar, bothered by an injury had just 2 assists in the postseason. Goldham is a steady stay-at-home defenseman and tied for the team lead in plus-minus a year ago at plus 14. Dickens spent all of last season with Pittsburgh of the AHL but has 25 games of NHL experience under his belt.

Editor's note - In real life this trade occurred a couple of weeks into the season but because I am using whatifsports to simulate the games Bentley will appear with Toronto the entire year in my replay.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
EXTRA EFFORT ALLOWS CUBS TO DRAW FIRST BLOOD IN SHOWDOWN WITH PHILLIES
You can't blame the Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates if they are feeling a little tense lately. The red-hot Chicago Cubs have made up 10 games in the standings over the past 32 days and have sole possession of first place after a 3-2 win over Philadelphia yesterday in the Windy City. Phillies 3B Jim Tabor's error allowed the Cubs to score twice in the bottom of the 11th erasing a 2-1 lead the Phillies gained on a Ron Northey homer half an inning earlier. The win allows the Cubs to draw first blood in a long 6 game series with the Phillies that could just decide the National League pennant race. The Phillies, already reeling with the injury to pitcher Max Macon (13-6, 2.80), got more bad news when Hugh Mulcahy (14-12, 3.15) suffered a shoulder injury and he may miss his next scheduled start against the Cubs on Wednesday.

The Phillies and Pirates have to be shaking there heads when it comes to what the Cubs have done. Here is the record of each of the 3 teams on July 22.
Code:
PHILADELPHIA	54	34 x
PITTSBURGH	55	39 2
CHICAGO 45	45	10
The Cubs were in 5th place at the time but since then have won 26 of their last 31 games while both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have played below .500 ball. Even the great Cliff Melton could not help the Bucs, he was beaten 5-3 by Boston yesterday.

In other National League games Sid Gordon had 4 hits and veteran Mel Ott had 3 as the Giants topped St Louis 7-4. Ott also drew a walk in the game, the 1607th of his career leaving him just 1 shy of Eddie Collins for 5th alltime in that category. Ott is already in the top in both homers (5th, 409) and rbi's (3rd, 1748). He is also just 72 hits shy of becoming the 15th player in league history to record 3000 career hits. In Brooklyn, Carl Furillo had 3 hits and a pair of rbi's as Brooklyn edged Cincinnati 3-2.

SWIFT TO GET START TODAY FOR PHILLIES
With Max Macon sidelined the Philadelphia Phillies are turning to veteran Bill Swift in an effort to slow down Vern Olsen and the Chicago Cubs. Swift, who has 268 career victories including 26 in 1940 when he won the NL Cy Young Award will be making just his 6th start of this season. He was 3-2 before an arm injury in May cost him 2 months. Since his return he has been confined to the Phillies bullpen in part because of the job Macon has been doing. The 39 year old Swift won 15 games a year ago.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP
Ival Goodman had 3 hits including a 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th to lift Cleveland past Boston 7-5 in American League play. Lou Boudreau also had 3 hits for the Indians, who stretch their lead over the Red Sox to 5.5 games. Wally Judnich and Vic Wertz homered for St Louis as the Browns beat Washington 7-6 to move into a second place tie with Boston.

In the other American League games Max Lanier tossed a 6-hitter for his 14th win of the season as New York downed Detroit 7-2 while a 5-run third inning helped the Chicago White Sox past Philadelphia 6-2.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
MONTANA GIVES PACKERS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
The Green Bay Packers are said to be leaning towards making rookie Frank *Albert the starting quarterback when they open the season against Dallas next week but second year pro Jordan Montana is doing his best to change the Packers plan. Montana threw for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead Green Bay past Cleveland 24-14 in their final preseason game. Montana took over to start the second half with the Packers trailing 14-0 and was in complete control of the Green Bay offense. Reserve cornerback Jamal McAlister had a pair of interceptions for the Pack who finish the preseason 2-2. Cleveland also finishes 2-2 and the Browns will open the season against Tennessee.

BERGER LEADS SAINTS PAST HOUSTON 31-7
All Pro running back Todd Berger scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns and ran for 137 yards to lead New Orleans to it's third win of the preseason. All the scoring came in the first half as the Saints marched up and down the field behind the steady guidance of QB Ryan Boyette. Houston's points came off of Boyette's only mistake, a 61 yard interception return for a touchdown by Tony Brady. New Orleans opens the regular season in Seattle while Houston travels to Cincinnati next week. The Texans finished the preseason with a 2-2 record.

In other preseason action Indianapolis took advantage of 5 Oakland turnovers to beat the Raiders 22-14. Third string QB Butch Morrow tossed a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes to help Pittsburgh win it's first preseason game 24-7 over winless Tennessee. The Miami Dolphins offense had the ball for over 43 minutes in their 39-17 spanking of the New York Giants. Dolphins QB Woody Brooks passed for over 200 yards and 3 Miami running backs combined for 173 rushing yards.

Second year back Marion *Motley gained 86 yards and scored a touchdown as Seattle improved to 2-2 in the preseason with a 23-7 victory over winless Denver. Finally, in St Louis Doug Bass looked to lock up the starting QB job with Philadelphia after leading the Eagles to a 35-17 victory over the Rams.

BILLS RELEASE 4TH ROUND PICK *STROHMEYER
As teams scrambled to get down to the roster limit a number of veterans will be let go in the next couple of days but it came as a big surprise when the Buffalo Bills decided to waive rookie defensive end George *Strohmeyer. An All-American and the Outland Trophy winner as a senior, Strohmeyer was a 4th round pick of the Bills but he showed very little in the two preseason games he appeared in. The Bills let him go two days in advance of the official release date to give Strohmeyer a chance to perhaps catch on with another team.

GOLF

Ben Hogan has his sight set firmly on his 7th tournament win of the season. The PGA money leader carded a 7 under par 65 on Saturday to pull into a first place tie with Jack Burke Jr. through three rounds of the Tucson Open. Burke Jr., who co-led with Jimmy Demaret after Friday's round, shot a 69 yesterday. Demaret's score ballooned with a 76 on Saturday and he now sits 7 strokes off the pace.

BOXING
CLAYTON WINS EUROPEAN FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
Britian's Ronnie Clayton is the new European Featherweight champion after scoring a split-decision victory over Ray Famechon in Paris last night. Clayton improves his record to 28-12-3 with the win and is ranked 7th in the world in his weight class. For Famechon it is a second straight terrible outing as this comes on the heels of his loss to world champion Willie Pep. Famechon is 25-13 since the war.

In other boxing action from around the world yesterday, middleweight Charlie Burley beat Carl 'Bobo' Olson by a 4th round TKO. Burley improves to 15-4 with the win and is possibly in line for a world title shot. The Pennsylvania native had his opponent on the ropes all fight and knocked Olson down early in the 4th round. Olson did regain his feet but was defenseless as Burley reigned blow after blow upon him until the referee jumped in with 20 seconds remaining in the round. Olson falls to 25-10 and has suffered a TKO loss in each of his last two bouts.

In the lightweight division, Rudy Criz of Los Angeles won a unanimous decision over Texas native Lew Jenkins. The victory raises Cruz' record to 15-2 and keeps him as one of the top 10 contenders in the lighweight class. The loss was the first real test for the 31 year old Jenkins, who sees his record drop to 13-5-1.

In New Orleans, lightweight Joe Brown was successful in his first fight in 6 months. Brown, who lost by a third round knock out in a title shot against Ike Williams in February, easily outpointed Mexican Mario Trigo in their 8 round bout. Brown improves to 13-3 while Trigo falls to 14-5-1.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
RED SOX WITHIN 4.5 GAMES OF INDIANS
Roy Partee and Al Zarilla snapped a 1-1 tie with rbi singles in the 9th inning to help the Boston Red Sox beat Cleveland 4-1. The rally made a winner out of Red Sox pitcher Bob Bowman (8-5, 3.93) and allowed Boston to gain a game on the first place Red Sox. In other American League action Washington beat St Louis 4-1 but in the process lost pitcher Joe Haynes for the rest of the season. The 29 year old Haynes (15-10, 2.36) appeared to be on his way to a third straight 20 win season before blowing out his elbow.

White Sox pitcher Bud Byerly tossed a 6-hitter and drove in a pair of runs as Chicago beat Philadelphia 3-1 while in New York Hal Trosky homered and drove in 3 runs to lead visiting Detroit past the Yankees 11-6.

CUBS BLOWOUT PHILLIES: TAKE 2 GAME LEAD
Vern Olsen won his major league leading 21st game of the season while Phil Rizzuto had 4 hits in Chicago's 15-4 laugher over Philadelphia. The win moves the Cubs two games ahead of the Phillies atop the National League but the two teams will meet 7 times in the next 10 days. In St Louis Ernie White tossed a complete game 1-hit shutout as the Cardinals blanked New York 4-0. The only hit off of White was a 4th inning double from Mickey Haslin. Elsewhere, Bill Salkeld had 4-hits as Pittsburgh plastered Boston 11-3 while
Joe Medwick drove in all 5 runs including a pair on a 10th inning double as Cincinnati topped Brooklyn 5-3.

JURISCH, MEDWICK WIN PLAYER OF WEEK ACCOLADES
Detroit pitcher Al Jurisch and Cincinnati outfielder Joe Medwick have been named the players of the week in their respective leagues. Jurisch won both of his starts including a 3-hit shutout of the Browns. On the season the third year pro is 19-9 with a 3.78 era. He is 9-1 since joining the Tigers in a mid-July trade from the Cardinals.

Medwick hit .538 with 9 rbi's for the Reds last week. On the season the 35 year old is challenging for the National League batting crown with a .339 average. He has 9 homers and 66 rbi's. This is the 4th time in his career Medwick wins the player of the week award.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PRESEASON
RAVENS WIN IN O.T. AS PRESEASON SLATE COMES TO AN END
Starters saw very little action as the final day of the National Football League preseason was played out. The most exciting contest occurred in Baltimore where the visiting Tampa Bay Bucs tied the game in the final minute of regulation on a James Green field goal only to see Baltimore pull out a 32-29 victory on a 47 yard field goal from Jim Holmes as the 15 minute overtime came to a close.

The best individual effort was in Buffalo where a pair of rookie running backs took centre stage. Bills back Buddy *Young gained 171 yards and scored 3 touchdowns to lead Buffalo past San Diego 31-17. Young had TD carries of 2,60 and 70 yards. Chargers rookie Bob *Fenimore had a touchdown of his own and gained 112 yards rushing. Fenimore was the 16th pick from Oklahoma A&M while Young was a second round selection out of Illinois.

In other action Tommy *Thompson completed 5 of 6 passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas City topped Cincinnati 34-30. Despite the stellar performance in 1 quarter of action, *Thompson will start the season as the back-up to Ulish Groce. The Bengals gave veteran QB Bud Rutledge plenty of playing time and his effort was good enough that he will get the nod as starter next week against Houston. Some observers in Cincinnati had felt 3rd year pro Ken Smith had done enough to win the job from Rutledge.

In San Francisco, Otis Johnson connected on 3 second-half field goals to lead the 49ers past Detroit 16-13, Arizona blasted the Jets 27-3, and Sam Foster's 3 yard run accounted for the only touchdown in Washington's 13-9 win over Carolina.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
THE SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE
The SEC had 3 teams ranked in the top 12 Nationally at the end of the 1946 season and this year should be more of the same. Georgia, Alabama and a rejuvinated Mississippi squad all could be in the top 10 by the end of the year with Tennessee and Georgia Tech not that far behind.

Georgia was unbeaten until a loss to number one Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl and despite losing QB Charles Trippi the Bulldogs appear loaded again this season. With Trippi gone, senior Steve xKuffrey gets his first chance to guide the offense. If he sputters there is junior John Rauch waiting in the wings. xKuffrey should be fine as he has a great running back in Andy *Dudish and a solid group of receivers led by seniors Dan *Edwards and Tyler xGriffin. The Georgia defense anchored by senior MLB Bill *Godwin will once again be punishing.

This may be a down year for last season's co-champs but the Tennessee Volunteers still have some talent on the defensive side of the ball. Cornerback Jack xRuvalcaba is one of the best ballhawks in the nation.

Halfback George *Gulyanics will be the key to Alabama's success. The Tide also have a solid offensive line led by certain NFL star Vaughn *Mancha. The most improved team in the conference should be Mississippi with two potential first round NFL picks in QB Charlie *Conerly and WR Joe *Johnson. Ole Miss also has a strong offensive line led by guard Bill *Erickson.

SEC PLAYER PROFILE - MISSISSIPPI QB CHARLIE CONERLY
Conerly is counted on to lead Mississippi from a terrible 0-6-1 conference mark a year ago to possibly a conference title in 1947. In real life he started his college career as a tailback in 1941 and 42. Conerly then spent three years with the Marines before returning to Mississippi in 1946. He became quarterback of the Rebels newly installed T Formation. He led Mississippi to a 9-2 record and a win over TCU in the Delta Bowl earning him All-American honours. He would then join the Giants and was named rookie of the year in 1948. Later he led the Giants to 4 championship game appearances before retiring following the 1961 season.

GOLF
BRADSHAW RALLIES TO WIN TUCSON OPEN
Harry Bradshaw came from 4 strokes back to win the Tucson Open and his comeback was against the most dominant golfer of the year. Entering the final round the Irish golfer sat 4 strokes back of Ben Hogan and Jack Burke Jr. Bradshaw carded a 5 under par 67 while Hogan, far and away the leading money winner on the tour, could do no better than par and finished one stroke behind Bradshaw. Burke exploded with a 75 and finished tied for third with Johnny Bulla.

It was Bradshaw's second tour win of the seaon - he previously won the Memphis Open. The $1500 first prize also moves him into 18th place on the season money list - important because the top 20 money winners qualify for the Tournament of Champions event which includes a record first prize of $3000. There are two more stops in the season: Salt Lake City for next weekend's Western Open and then in California for the Los Angeles Open the following week.

BOXING
SADDLER AND WRIGHT WIN TUNEUP BOUTS
In preperation for their meeting on September 30, top featherweight contenders Sammy Saddler and Chalky Wright each fought a tune-up bout yesterday. In New Haven, Saddler had little trouble disposing of journeyman Al Reid, taking a unanimous 8-round decision. Saddler improves his career record to 24-2 while Reid falls to 15-24-2. Both of Saddler's losses have come against undefeated World Champion Willie Pep. Wright also won an easy 8 round decision, at Del Mar Racetrack in California over Fabela Chavez. Wright is 27-6-1 and will be looking to avenge a TKO loss to Saddler early in the postwar tournament.

Undefeated World Featherweight Champion Willie Pep will be looking for his 20th victory in San Francisco on Thursday when he puts his title on the line against Chico Rosa. It really is nothing more than another payday for Pep who should have little trouble with Rosa. A native of Hawaii but fighting out of Los Angeles Rosa has put together a streak of 9 straight wins and is 25-10-2 for his career.
