The pitching of Joe Blong was always going to struggle against this poor batting but his form also dipped during the month. He started all 9 games, pitching 60.1 innings. This work load saw him give up 78 hits and 26 earned runs for an ERA of 3.88. The team gave up a total of 70 runs during the month.

The batting tried its best with 52 runs in the month. The star of the show was First Baseman Cal McVey. McVey started all 8 games and had 32 plate appearances. These appearances bought him 12 hits along with 3 runs and 9 RBI's. This gave him an average of .375 for the month.

The pitching went back to Al Pratt as starter after his injury but this was probably not a good move. Pratt started all 8 games but put up poor numbers in the 58 innings he pitched. He gave up 59 hits and 22 earned runs for an ERA of 3.41. The team gave up a total of 56 runs.

The pitching from George Zettlein saw his worst month all season. He picked up an ERA of 3.90 along with 70 hits and 24 earned runs against him. He did all this from 8 game starts and 55 innings pitched.

The fans of the Orioles were frustrated with the way their team played during the season. Their frustrations stemmed from a lack of batting and a slow start. This always made it difficult for the team to try and defend their pennant title as they were always playing catch up. The slow start meant that the team were lucky to play average ball during the year. This average ball saw them finish third in the AL 9 games behind the winning Philadelphia Athletics. The fans will hope that the batting stars will come back into form next season and push the team back up the table.

The final 3 games saw 2 losses and a win against the Philadelphia Athletics 5-6, 1-2 and 12-2

The players that did perform well during the season include pitcher Cherokee Fisher and Second Baseman Eddie Booth.

The 5 year veteran Cherokee Fisher put in another solid performance for the Orioles this year. He started 56 of the 60 games and pitched 462 innings. This work load saw him pick up another solid ERA of 2.77 for the year. This should put him in the running for the Pitcher of the Year award again.

Eddie Booth has been with the Orioles ever since they drafted him in the first year draft in 1871. This 4 year veteran gets his fair share of starts in the team at second base. This year he started 45 of the 60 games played. These games saw him have 173 at bats in which he claimed 50 hits for an average of .289. The best of the full time starters was third baseman Lip Pike who posted an average of .274

The fans of the Boston Red Stockings were hoping that this year would see the team win the pennant, but with the dips in form shown this year, there was never any chance of that. The team played only average ball all season as the whole NL was blown away by the White Stockings. This was good enough to put them in second place in the NL. The fans will hope that these dips in form can be remedied next season and a push for the pennant can be mounted.

The Red Stockings finished the season with a 9-8 win against the Cincinnati Reds followed by being swept 0-3 by the White Stockings 1-10, 3-9 and 3-5

The players that showed that they never have a dip in form were Second Baseman Bill Craver and Pitcher Bobby Mathews

Five year Veteran Craver had another solid season for the Red Stockings. He played 58 of the 60 games with 48 of those being as a starter. These games saw him come to the plate 218 times. He managed to connect 72 times from these at bats to earn him an average of .330 for the year. This .330 average was the best in the NL and saw him win the NL batting crown for 1875.

Bobby Mathews has been the starting pitcher of the Boston Red Stockings for 5 years now and has been solid every year. 1875 saw him have his best season yet and he started 56 games and pitched 447 innings. This work saw him post his best ERA of his career at 2.48.

The Atlantics fans are seeing their team get worse rather than better as each season goes past. This year the team had another disaster of a season as they finished rock bottom of the NL table a full 23 games behind the winning White Stockings. While the fans feel that the players should take some of the blame, as they have not been performing, they haven't been helped with the fact that the coaching staff has never been settled. The fans will be hoping any changes made in the off season will not be to unsettling and can help the team improve next year.

The team finished the season with 2 wins and a loss against the Cincinnati Reds. 6-7, 8-6 and 9-2

The players who showed some form in this bad performance were Third baseman Bill Boyd and Pitcher Joe Blong.

Bill Boyd has been with the Atlantics for 4 years and has been a regular starter in that time. This year he played in 56 of the games played, of which he started 50. These games saw him hit the ball 61 times from 222 at bats. This earned him an average of .275. This has been the worst of his career so far but that can only be expected in a team that is struggling.

Rookie Pitcher Joe Blong was thrown straight in as the starting pitcher this year and you could tell that he was not quite ready for the level required. He tried his best as he started 58 games and pitched 413.2 innings during the season. This work saw him post an ERA of 3.05 for the year. Hopefully next season with this years experience behind him he will be stronger and better and will help the team win more games.

The White Stockings fans have been in heaven all year as the team managed to blow away all opposition in the NL. The team never had a losing month through the whole season and were never out of 1st place during the season. This won them their third NL pennant in 4 years. The team will now face the AL's Philadelphia Athletics in MLB Championship Series. The fans are hoping that with their experience of the big show they will have to much for the AL team.

The White Stockings finished the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Boston Red Stockings. 10-1, 9-3 and 5-3.

The players that starred in this wonderful performance were Pitcher Jim Britt and Short Stop Ross Barnes.

Pitcher Jim Britt has been the White Stockings starter ever since he joined the club in the 1871 first year draft. This season saw him post a career year as he claimed his best ERA of 1.89. He did this in 57 game starts with 486.2 innings pitched. There is a very good likelihood that these figures will see Britt picking up the NL Pitcher of the Year award at the end of season awards dinner.

Britt also broke both the single season ERA and win records with 1.89 and 42 wins respectively. He also picked up his first pitching triple crown during the season.

Short Stop Ross Barnes has been an ever present for the White Stockings since he joined the club in the inaugural draft at the start of 1871. The season saw him continue his run of starting every game the White Stockings have played as he started all 60 games this season. These 60 games saw him come to the plate 265 times and pick up 81 hits. This gave him an average on the season of .306. This was the worst of his career and shows how hits and runs were harder to come by this year for all players.

8th October 1875

The Reds fans saw another season of struggles as they flirted with the bottom of the NL table. In the end the team managed to play slightly below average ball on the year. This saw the team finish in 3rd place in the NL table. This is the second third place finish in 2 years and the fans will be hoping that the off season sees some improvement in the team so that they can finish in a better position next year.

The team finished with a 8-9 loss to the Boston Red Stockings and a 1-2 series loss to the Brooklyn Atlantics. 7-6, 6-8 and 2-9

The players that showed they can still be counted on during the season to produce the goods were Right Fielder John Radcliff and Catcher John Clapp

John Radcliff has been with the club for 5 years. His starting history has been patchy during his career but this year it was good as he played in 54 games with 53 of those being starts. He had 204 at bats with 60 hits claimed. This gives him an average of .294. This is the worst of his career but was the best of the regular starters in the team this year.

Clapp has been with the club for 4 years and has been the starting catcher the last 3 of those years. This season saw him start all 60 games and claim 72 hits from 259 at bats. This gave him an average of .278 which is the best it has been when he is the regular starter.

The pitching has been mixed all season as 3 players made starts. Stearns made the most starts at 39 but his ERA was poorer at 2.57 than Al Pratt who had an ERA of 2.30 from 16 starts. Pratt also missed 4 months of the season through injury.

The fans of the Cleveland Blues are become resigned to the fact that their team is going to be the perennial struggler in the AL. This season was no different as they only managed to win 23 of the 60 games played. This consigned the team to their 3rd 4th place finish in the 5 seasons of the league and their 5th in either 3rd or 4th place. The fans would love to see a season where their team managed a top half finish and hope that this off season may bring the changes that will see this happen.

The team finished with a win and 2 losses against the St. Louis Brown Stockings. 7-6, 2-3 and 7-8

The best of the players in this poor showing were Pitcher Tricky Nichols and Second Baseman John Dailey

Rookie pitcher Tricky Nichols has had a tough start to his career as a starting pitcher. He started 53 games during the season and pitched 406 innings. This work load saw him gain an ERA of 2.75. This seasons experience should stand him in good stead for the next season as he should return stronger than this year.

John Dailey is in his first year in the MLB and has posted solid numbers for a rookie. He played in 54 games, all as the starting second baseman. These games saw him come to the plate 223 times and hit the ball 63 times. This earned him an average of .283. These figures will put him in with a chance of the Rookie of the Year award and should also benefit the club as he should be better next season.

8th October 1875

The fans of the Athletics are finally celebrating the AL pennant they craved. The team have been close on more than one occasion in the last four seasons but have finally managed to top the AL table at the fifth time of asking. They did this on the back of some excellent batting and pitching during the season. They will next face the strongly fancied Chicago White Stockings. The fans of the Athletics are hoping they can spring a surprise and win the MLB Championship Series.

The team finished the season with a 3-2 win against the St. Louis Brown Stockings and a 2-1 series win against the Baltimore Orioles. 6-5, 2-1 and 2-12

The stars of the season were Right Fielder John Glenn and Pitcher Dick McBride

Right Fielder Glenn has been with the club for 5 years and has an up and down career while their. This season has seen him on an up as he played 53 games with 49 of those as the starter. This saw him take 205 at bats to hit the ball 68 times. This gave him an average of .332 for the season. This average saw him crowned the batting champion in the AL.

5 year starter Dick McBride had a career year in 1875. He started 56 games and pitched 443.2 innings. This work load saw him pick up an ERA of 1.97. These figures could very easily see him pick up the AL pitcher of the year award. We will find out at the Awards dinner in late November

The fans of the Brown Stockings are extremely frustrated at the end of a second season where the team didn't produce what the fans know they can produce. The batting again had its dips in form and this left the team finishing in second place with only average ball being played. The fans will be looking at the changes that can be made in the off season to see if the improvements can be made.

The team finished the season with a 2-3 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics and a 2-1 series win against the Cleveland Blues. 6-7, 3-2 and 8-7

The players that have managed to keep their form together through the season were Pitcher George Zettlein and Third Baseman Harry Schafer.

Starting Pitcher George Zettlein has been the go to pitcher for the Brown Stockings for all 5 seasons so far. This year saw another solid performance by him as he posted an ERA of 2.62 from 425.1 innings pitched in 56 game starts.

Harry Schafer has been with the Brown Stockings for 5 seasons and has always been a regular starter for the club. This season he played 58 games including 54 starts. These games saw him come to the plate 254 times and put bat to ball on 75 of these occasions. This gave him an average of .295, the best of his career so far.

13th October 1875

The White Stockings fans are celebrating tonight as their team parades the MLB Championship Series Trophy through the streets of down town Chicago. The team played wonderfully in the series and didn't allow the AL's Philadelphia Athletics even a sniff of a chance at beating them. The series finished as a 4-0 sweep and helps the fans forget last season's 0-4 MLB Championship Series loss.

Game 1 saw the White Stockings give up an early 0-3 lead in the first inning before storming back with 10 unanswered runs in the rest of the games. The star of the show was Catcher Deacon White who produced a fine batting display of 4 hits and 3 runs from 5 at bats. Al Spalding took the win after pitching the whole game giving up only 2 earned runs.

The White Stockings had to fight a lot harder to pick up the win in Game 2 of the Series. The team won 10-9 and managed to hold the win in the last inning against a strong comeback from the Athletics. The game was won in the 7th inning with a 5 run blast. The star of the show was Short Stop Ross Barnes as he hit 4 for 1 run and 1 RBI.

Game 3 was a low scoring affair which saw the White Stockings use early pressure to grind out the win. They picked up a run in each of the 1st, 2nd and 4th innings along with one in the 8th to take the game. Jim Britt had a superb game with the ball as he allowed only 2 hits and 0 earned runs in the 9 innings he pitched.

Game 4 was another exhibition of how the White Stockings can take a game away from the opposition by stringing together 7 or 8 hits in an innings and score a 5 run blast. They did this in the 3rd inning of this game as they won it 8-4. The star of the show was surprisingly though was not a batter but instead pitcher Al Spalding who pitched the whole game and gave up only 2 earned runs.

The fans of the Athletics are crying tonight as they saw their team crushed by the NL's Chicago White Stockings. The team were swept 0-4 by the White Stockings in what amounts to a humiliating defeat. The Athletics fans are hoping they can return next season and put this humiliation right.

The Athletics lost game 1 by a score of 3-10. The team got an early boost as they scored 3 runs in the first inning before being shut down by the White Stocking pitching. The Athletics pitching struggled as the strong White Stocking line up picked up 4 runs in both the second and the fourth inning. Pud Galvin picked up the loss.

Game 2 saw a second loss for the Atheltics. This game was a lot closer as the team lost 9-10. The team were leading 5-4 after 6 innings only to see 5 runs posted by the White Stockings in inning 7 against the 2 by the Athletics. This inning took all the fight out of the Athletics until the picked up 2 late runs in the last inning to go close.

Game 3 saw the Philadelphia Athletics all but shut out by the pitching of the White Stockings to lose 1-4. The team only managed 2 hits all game and picked up their single run in the 3rd inning.

Game 4 saw the Athletics try and grind a result out only to see the game taken away from them by the White Stockings with a 5 run blast in the 3rd inning. They lost the game 4-8 and had to be happy with only single runs in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th innings. The pitching let the team down as John Cassidy gave up 8 earned runs in the game.

Off Season 1875

1st January 1876

The fans of the Orioles have seen a quiet front office this off season as very few changes were made by the owners. The only real front office news of note was that Manager Augusto Barron has signed 2 year extension to his contract.

The same cannot be said of the playing staff as the Orioles went into the trade market to try and strengthen their team

The team traded 25 year old second baseman Eddie Booth and 20 year old minor league Right Fielder John Gaffney to the St. Louis Brown Stockings in exchange for 29 year old Right Fielder Ed Pinkham. The fans feel that they possibly got the worst of that deal but only time will tell.

The award season saw very little recognition for Orioles players. The only bright spark was that Short Stop George Wright managed to make the AL Defensive team of the year to earn another Golden Glove award

The first year draft picks were thin on the ground for the Orioles this year and the team decided to go for pitching in the form of Hugh O'Neill. The full draft log is shown below.

Off Season 1875

1st January 1876

The fans of the Boston team were busy in the off season as the owners decided to hold a vote to see if they would like a name change and if so what they would like it to be. The fans opted for a name change to the Boston Red Caps. We ourselves cannot see why the fans made this choice as the difference between Red Caps and Red Stockings is very little apart from the shorter banners needed.

The front office saw very little movement as GM Karl Bakewell signed a 1 year extension to his contract.

The Player award season was also quiet with very little recognition for the players of the Red Caps/Stockings. Only 2 players made the defensive team of the year. These were Pitcher Bobby Mathews and First Baseman Tim Murnane. Both took home a Golden Glove award.

The first year draft pick saw the team go crazy and select more than anyone else from their picks. They opted for Pitcher Terry Larkin in the first round to help bolster the pitching options. The full draft log is shown below.

The team signed all draftees except 3rd round pick Jim Ward who will return for the draft next year.
