Wednesday, June 4, 1879, at Providence Grays (15-12 3rd in the Liberty League)
Deacon Wilson finally signed our contract offer. We put him on the active roster. We lost 2 of 3 in Troy last time we met the Grays. John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 12-6 1.67 0.6/3.2 BB/K) vs. Will Taylor, Prov. (32 L 4-4 1.18 0.6/4.8 BB/K) Won - 10 to 7 Bendickson was awesome for 8 innings. We were up 10 to 1 going into the bottom of the 9th and they scored 6 times on 6 hits and 3 errors. He gave up 14 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. We made 4 errors, 3 of them in the 9th. We had 13 hits and the Grays made 8 errors. I had 3 hits with a double, a walk, scored twice, had an RBI and made an error in the 9th. 1B John Demick had 2 hits with a double, scored twice, knocked in 2 and made an error. LF John Powers had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Grays, 2B John Meredith played in his first game of the season due to an injury. He had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Other Games: Cincinnati (1) at Utica (6) - George Dennis (7-3) over Fred Cline (0-2). Dennis allowed 6 hits and struck out one. 2B Bub Crawford had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Bobby Hubbard had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and had an RBI. Rookie RF Joe Coffey sprained his ankle and will miss 2 weeks or so. Baltimore (4) at Boston (3) - William Rose (10-8) over Charlie Moss (8-5). Rose allowed 9 hits, walked a batter and struck out one. RF Reuben Frohman had 4 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. Louisville (13) at Worcester (3) - Buck Richards (3-12) over John Callaham (5-5). Richards allowed 8 hits, walked one and struck out 3. Callaham has lost 3 starts in a row and 4 of his last 5. He gave up 17 hits, all singles. 1B Jim Booker had 4 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. LF John Rodgers had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. C Doc Cole had 4 hits, scored twice and had 3 RBIs. Down in the National Association, OF Stub Orlando pulled a muscle in his side and will miss a month. Outfielders are evaporating and there are no more free agents to sign. Last edited by Questdog; 07-26-2014 at 12:15 AM. |

Saturday, June 7, 1879, at Providence Grays (15-13 3rd in the Liberty League)
Right now, the Haymakers have 8 players on the Disabled List. John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 13-6 1.68 0.6/3.4 BB/K) vs. Willis Kornfield, Prov. (26 R 11-8 3.01 1.0/3.1 BB/K) Won - 5 to 1 Bendy with a 4-hitter. He walked one and struck out one. We made 3 errors. We had 8 hits and the Grays made 5 errors. CF John Confair had 2 hits, was caught stealing once, scored a run, had an RBI and made an error. I had a double and an RBI. RF Deacon Wilson, in his Haymaker debut, had a double, a walk and an RBI. Other Games: Cincinnati (3) at Utica (0) - Jim Postema (12-7) over Tom Marshman (7-12). Postema allowed 3 hits and struck out 2. He also had a hit and scored a run. Baltimore (1) at Boston (2) - Charlie Morlock (10-6) over William Rose (10-9). Morlock allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 7. Rose only allowed 5 hits and struck out one. Each team made 4 errors. All the runs were scored in the 8th inning. LF George Zech doubled in a run to tie the game and scored the go ahead run when 3B Sandy Perkes singled. Louisville (5) at Worcester (4) in 10 innings - John Merson (7-4) over Pop Yurkovich (6-13). Merson allowed 12 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. Merson also knocked in the winning run in the top of the 10th. 1B Jim Booker had 3 hits with a double. |

Do you have plans for expansion or do you have league evolution on?

We will mirror the structure of the major leagues until 1985. There will be 2 expansion teams each in 1985, 1993 and 2001 to bring the total number of major league teams to 32. There are no current plans for expansion after that.

Monday, June 9, 1879, at Providence Grays (15-14 tied for 3rd in the Liberty League)
Abe Everette, Troy (30 L 6-3 1.44 0.8/2.9 BB/K) vs. Willis Kornfield, Prov. (26 R 11-9 2.95 1.1/3.2 BB/K) Won - 7 to 2 Everette allowed 6 hits and struck out 1. We made 3 errors, 2 by Bill Rush, one at third and one at short. We had 11 hits and the Grays made 7 errors. I had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. C Henry Newman had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Sol Popko had 4 hits with 3 doubles and an RBI. He is the third batter ever to hit 3 doubles in a 9-inning game. We took 5 walks in this game off Kornfield: 2 by Bill Rush and 2 by RF Deacon Wilson. Other Games: Cincinnati (3) at Utica (7) - Tom Marshman (8-12) over Jim Postema (12-8). Marshman allowed 8 hits and struck out 3. Ex-Haymaker CF Bobby Hubbard had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. With all the injuries we have had to outfielders, I certainly regret letting him go. Baltimore (4) at Boston (11) - Charlie Morlock (11-6) over William Rose (10-10). Morlock allowed 8 hits and struck out 5. LF George Zech had 3 hits, was caught stealing once and scored a run. CF Charlie Warner had 3 hits, scored 2 runs, had an RBI and made an error. SS John Kron had 2 hits with a bases-loaded triple and scored 2 runs. 2B Billy Little and 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run, had 3 RBIs and made an error. Louisville (8) at Worcester (7) - John Merson (8-4) over Pop Yurkovich (6-14). Merson allowed 13 hits and did not walk or strike out anyone. Yurkovich set a new mark for strikeouts in a 9-inning game with 9. He allowed 12 hits and walked 2. Louisville scored 3 times in the top of the 9th to win. Both 2B John Bohler and 1B Jim Booker had RBIs in that 9th inning and each had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Bohler also stole a base and scored twice. |

I find it hard to keep up with the Haymakers' record during the course of a month.
May it be possible to casually let that flow in during the dissection of games every once in a while, like, once per series?

Actually, I made a conscience decision not to show it out of respect for you. I thought maybe seeing the Haymaker record would depress you even more over the fate of the Racoons.....

Troy Haymakers (21-9 1st place) vs. Louisville Eclipse (12-18 tied for 6th place) We swept Louisville in Kentucky the first time we met. Since then, however, they have changed pitchers and are 11-7 in their last 18 games, though we'll be facing their old #1 guy in this first game. He has, however, pitched very well since moving into the #2 role. Buck Richards, Lou. (32 R 3-12 2.86 0.9/3.7 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 14-6 1.60 0.7/3.3 BB/K) Won - 12 to 3 Once again, a shaky 9th inning spoils what was looking to be an awesome line for Bendy. He shut them out until the 8th and gave up 3 hits and 2 runs in the 9th. He allowed 7 hits, walked one and struck out 4. We made 4 errors, 2 by yours truly. We had 12 hits and Louisville made 8 errors. CF John Confair had 3 hits, was caught stealing once, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. I had 2 hits and scored 2 runs and was also caught stealing once. SS Sam Cowan had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. C Henry Newman and 1B Sol Popko each hit a double, scored a run and knocked one in. RF Deacon Wilson had 2 hits with a triple, was caught stealing once and scored 2 runs. LF Bill Harris did not get a hit, but did walk once, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Other Games: Providence (4) at Cincinnati (3) in 10 innings - Will Taylor (5-5) over Fred Cline (0-3). Taylor allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out 8. He had 2 hits at bat with an RBI. Each team scored a run on a passed ball in the 9th. In the 1oth, RF Ed Radle doubled and SS Joe Henry singled him home. Both players had entered the game in the bottom of the 9th as defensive replacements. Reds' CF Bob Raymond injured his back and will miss the next 2 months. Worcester (3) at Baltimore (4) - Roger Lake (3-8) in relief of William Rose over John Callaham (5-6). Rose tweaked his shoulder in the 1st inning and had to leave the game but should be okay with a week's rest. Lake allowed 9 hits, walked one and struck out 5 in 8.1 innings. Callaham allowed 7 hits and struck out 4 in his 4th loss in a row. It is the first one where he pitched well enough to win. 1B Buck Keating hit a home run and had 2 RBIs. Utica (3) at Boston (6) - Charlie Moss (9-5) over George Dennis (7-4). Moss allowed 12 hits and struck out 5. LF George Zech had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run, had an RBI and made an error. 2B Billy Little hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. Utica RF Joe Coffey has a slight hamstring pull and will sit for a couple of weeks. If you think Troy is off to a good start this season, you are right, but Rochester is playing even better in the National Association. They beat Manchester today, 13 to 3, to improve their record to 25-6. They already have a 6 game lead over 2nd place Buffalo. Two players, especially, have performed at a level that suggests they deserve to be in Troy. 26-year-old 2B Jack Green is batting .336 and has scored 35 runs in 30 games. 27-year-old P Jack Roberts is 11-2 with a 1.50 ERA. He also leads the Association in fewest walks per 9 innings and lowest batting average against. Of course, we have no room for either player right now on the Troy roster. John Hagadorn, by the way, is hitting well under .200 in 6 games. Last edited by Questdog; 07-26-2014 at 06:42 PM. |

Troy Haymakers (22-9 1st place) vs. Louisville Eclipse (12-19 7th place) Who the heck scheduled a game on Friday the 13th? I don't want to play, but if I sit out, no one else will want to play either. I got a bad feeling about this one.... Ryther makes his 1879 debut after being injured since Spring Training. He was 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA last season for Brooklyn in one start and 17.1 innings. He was the Hurler Trophy winner in the New York State Championship Association in 1877 for the Pennant winning Syracuse Stars. Buck Richards has been sent to Buffalo. Ted Ryther, Lou. (25 L 1st start of 1879) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 15-6 1.62 0.7/3.3 BB/K) Won - 5 to 4 in 12 innings Bendy allowed 6 hits and struck out 2, but I had to pinch hit for him in the bottom of the 9th since we were losing. Yale Molloy led the inning off with a hit, his second in as many tries for the season, and with 2 outs, I knocked him home to tie the game. I tried to steal second, though, so Cowan could knock me in to win, but I got thrown out. Abe Everette came on and he ended up with the win, pitching 3 innings and only allowing one hit. In the bottom of the 12th, 3B Bill Rush led off with a single, but got thrown out trying to steal. I singled and stole second and went to third on the bad throw by C Doc Cole. After they walked SS Sam Cowan, 1B John Demick singled to win the game. Ryther pitched very well for the first 7 innings, only giving us 3 hits and one run. His lack of conditioning, though, began to show in the 8th. We made 6 errors, 2 by CF John Confair. We had 13 hits and Louisville made 7 errors. 3B Bill Rush had 2 hits with a triple, walked and scored a run. I had 3 hits, scored 2 runs, had 2 RBIs and made an error. SS Sam Cowan had 3 hits, a walk, scored a run and made an error. John Demick had 2 hits. RF Spider Coleman had 2 hits and an RBI. Other Games: Providence (4) at Cincinnati (5) - Jim Postema (13-8) over Willis Kornfield (11-11). All the scoring was done by the 4th inning. Postema allowed 8 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4. Kornfield allowed 9 hits and struck out 2. Manager/CF Washington Mach had 3 hits with 2 triples, scored a run, had 2 RBIs and an error. Providence SS Sam Clark sprained his ankle and is expected to miss 2 weeks. Worcester (8) at Baltimore (3) - Pop Yurkovich (7-14) over Sal DeVaux (0-1). Yurkovich allowed 3 hits, walked 4 and struck out 7. 24-year-old Sal DeVaux made his Liberty League debut. He allowed 12 hits, walked one and struck out 3. He had been 9-7 with a 2.31 ERA for Washington in the National Association. Baltimore CF John Froom pinched a nerve in his neck and will miss the next 2 weeks. Utica (2) at Boston (11) - Charlie Morlock (12-6) over Tom Marshman (8-13). Morlock allowed 7 hits and struck out 3. LF George Zech had 1 hit, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs, had 2 RBIs and made an error. Last edited by Questdog; 07-26-2014 at 08:07 PM. |

Troy Haymakers (23-9 1st place) vs. Louisville Eclipse (12-20 tied for 7th place) Ted Ryther, Lou. (25 L 0-1 2.38 1.6/1.6 BB/K) vs. Abe Everette, Troy (30 L 8-3 1.35 0.7/2.6 BB/K) Won - 6 to 3 Abe only allowed 4 hits, 2 in the first and 2 in the 8th to give them their runs. He walked one and struck out 3. We made 5 errors, 3 by 1B John Demick. We had 13 hits and Louisville made 3 errors. RF Spider Coleman had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. 3B Bill Rush had 3 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. CF John Confair had a triple, but also grounded into 2 double plays and made an error. C Eb Burke had 2 hits and scored a run. Abe Everette had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Our new owner, Frank Phillips, has become a bit of a nuisance lately. He stopped me after the game and admonished me for playing C Eb Burke. He thinks Henry Newman ought to be in there everyday. I told him that I disagreed and that since I had won 3 Pennants in a row, I thought I was more than qualified to make the assessment. He said, "Be that as it may, I want to see Newman in there everyday and you will abide by my wishes." I replied that I would abide by his wishes in things within in his purview and that I would follow my own council in things that were within mine, and that if he did not like winning Pennants, he was within his rights to hire a different manager. He did not give me an ultimatum and we will see if I have shut him up or not. Other Games: Providence (13) at Cincinnati (6) - Will Taylor (6-5) over Fred Cline (0-4). Taylor allowed 10 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2. CF Lou Landaal had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. 2B John Meredith had 3 hits, scored a run, had an RBI and made an error. LF Silver Borresen had 3 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 5 RBIs. Ex-Haymaker 3B Crazy Kelley, making his first Liberty League appearance since 1877, had 3 hits with a double, scored a run, had 2 RBIs and made 2 errors. Worcester (11) at Baltimore (5) - John Callaham (6-6) over Roger Lake (3-9). Callaham allowed 12 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3. Lake did not pitch very well, allowing 18 hits, but he did knock in 4 of Baltimore's 5 runs with a pair of hits. RF Dummy Smith had 3 hits, a walk, scored 3 runs and made 2 errors. There were 18 errors made by the two teams. Utica (5) at Boston (6) - Charlie Moss (10-5) over George Dennis (7-5). Moss allowed 11 hits and struck out 2. LF George Zech (I've mentioned him quite often of late, haven't I?) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. |

Troy Haymakers (24-9 1st place) at Cincinnati Reds (16-17 4th place) The Reds beat us 2 out of 3 in Troy the first time we met. I've recalled Wash Horsfall from Rochester and sent IF John Powers back down. Wash has proven to me that I can use him if necessary to pitch. His arm is not up to starting however, and we will only use him in emergency relief. John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 15-6 1.56 0.6/3.2 BB/K) vs. Jim Postema, Cin. (29 R 13-8 2.66 0.6/3.5 BB/K) Lost - 6 to 3 Bendickson only allowed 5 hits, but 4 of them were for extra-bases. He walked 1 and struck out 2. We made 4 errors, 2 by Bendickson himself. But the story today was Jim Postema. He gave us only 5 hits and walked 1. Before today the most strikeouts Postema had recorded in a 9 inning game was 7. The record by any pitcher was 9, set by Pop Yurkovich of Worcester one week ago. But today the Dutchman sent 11 Haymakers back to the bench because they failed to make contact with the ball. And the Haymakers are the toughest team to strikeout in the League! An amazing performance to watch. Cincinnati only made 2 errors. CF John Confair had a double and scored a run. RF Deacon Wilson hit a triple, scored a run, and had an RBI. The Haymakers had only allowed one home run on the year before today. They allowed the second one in this game and it was hit by the same fella that hit the first, C Jake Houghton of the Reds. It came with 2 men on base and went a country mile. Other Games: Boston (9) at Providence (5) - Charlie Morlock (13-6) over Willis Kornfield (11-12). Morlock allowed 11 hits and struck out 2. He also had 2 hits, scored 2 runs, had an RBI and made an error. CF Charlie Warner had 3 hits, was caught stealing once, scored a run, had 2 RBIs and made an error. SS John Kron had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored twice and knocked one in. RF Dan Sloan had 5 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. Baltimore (4) at Louisville (2) - Sal DeVaux (1-1) over John Merson (8-5). DeVaux allowed 8 hits and struck out 3. Merson only allowed 7 hits and struck out 4. 9 Eclipse errors did him in. Baltimore only made 3 miscues. LF Martin Griffin had 2 hits, stole 2 bases, scored a run, knocked in 3 and made an error. Utica (3) at Worcester (7) - Pop Yurkovich (8-14) over Tom Marshman (8-14). Yurkovich allowed 7 hits, walked one and struck out 3. 3B Jim Hodzic had 3 hits with a triple, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. |

Troy Haymakers (24-10 1st place) at Cincinnati Reds (17-17 tied for 3rd place) OF Bill Hammack is healthy enough to play, so I sent OF Bill Harris back to Rochester. John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 15-7 1.66 0.7/3.2 BB/K) vs. Fred Cline, Cin. (37 R 0-4 3.86 1.4/0.9 BB/K) Lost - 3 to 1 You know, when we began this game I had visions of us scoring double digits off Fred Cline; I was only off by 9 runs. Bendickson lost his second straight game where he only allowed 5 hits. He struck out 2. We made 7 errors, 4 by LF Bill Hammack, who had not played in a game since early May, so we will give him this one as a mulligan. We had 8 hits and Cincinnati made 4 errors. I had 2 hits, but tweaked my ankle and had to leave the game. It's nothing serious and will be fine in a day or two. Manager/CF Washington Macho had a double and a triple for the Reds, scored a run and had an RBI. Other Games: Boston (5) at Providence (3) - Charlie Moss (11-5) over Willis Kornfield (11-13). Moss allowed 9 hits and struck out 3. CF Charlie Warner had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. The Red Caps have now won 7 in a row and are tied with the Haymakers for first place. Baltimore (8) at Louisville (9) in 12 innings - Ted Ryther (1-2) over Roger Lake (3-10). Ryther allowed 17 hits in 12 innings, walked one and struck out 7. CF Pop Engleson singled with 2-outs in the bottom of the 12th to win it. He had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. SS Matthias Haak had 3 hits with a double, scored a run, had an RBI and made 2 errors. C Doc Cole had 3 hits, scored 2 runs, including the final one, and made an error. Utica (1) at Worcester (9) - John Callaham (7-6) over George Dennis (7-6). Callaham allowed 6 hits and struck out 2. With his bat, Callaham had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF Duke Baab had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, was caught once and scored 2 runs. Manager/C Al Cannon had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 23-year-old rookie 2B Billy Moore had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, was caught once and scored 2 runs. |

Troy Haymakers (24-11 tied for 1st place) at Cincinnati Reds (18-17 3rd place) John Bendickson, Troy (27 R 15-8 1.64 0.6/3.2 BB/K) vs. Jim Postema, Cin. Troy Haymakers (28-11 tied for 1st place) at Boston Red Caps (28-11 tied for 1st place) We beat the Red Caps 2 out of 3 in Troy the first time we met. Boston has an 11 game winning streak. Abe Everette, Troy (30 L 9-3 1.24 0.7/2.6 BB/K) vs. Charlie Morlock, Bos. (29 R 16-6 1.92 0.6/4.7 BB/K) Lost - 5 to 0 Everette allowed 10 hits, walked one and struck out one. We made 3 errors. 2 by CF John Confair. We had 5 hits and Boston made 2 errors. Charlie Morlock with his second shutout in a row, his 9th win in a row and his 4th game in succession where he has allowed 6 or fewer hits. Boston has now won 12 in a row. Hopefully, number 13 will prove unlucky. LF Bill Hammack had 2 hits. Other Games: Utica (12) at Baltimore (6) - Tom Marshman (10-16) over Sal DeVaux (1-5). Marshman allowed 10 hits, walked one and struck out 2. 3B Charlie Taylor had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Manager/1B Lou Knight had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a triple, scored 3 runs, had 3 RBIs and made an error. 2B Bub Crawford had 3 hits, scored 2 runs, had an RBI and made 2 errors. Baltimore P William Rose wrenched his back and is going to be sore for a couple of weeks. Providence (4) at Louisville (5) - John Merson (10-5) over Willis Kornfield (13-15). Merson allowed 8 hits, walked one and struck out 2. Kornfield allowed 9 hits, walked one and struck out 6. RF Joseph Thomson had 2 hits with a double, scored a run, had an RBI and made 2 errors. Worcester was down 3 to 1, but scored twice in the top of the 9th to tie the game, only to watch Cincinnati score a run in the bottom half without the aid of a hit or a walk to win. With one out, SS Bob Sampson reached base on an error by 2B Billy Moore. He then stole second and went to third on Manager/C Al Cannon's bad through. Cannon then let one of Yurkovich's pitches get by him and the game was over. |
