Blue Jays 8, Tigers 3. [Boxscore]
Summary: Slumping Tigers blasted by Blue Jays for their third loss in a row. Pitching: Alvarez was pounded by the Canadian Boys today, surrendering 5 runs on 6 hits (1 HR) and 3 walks over 3 innings while striking out 4. His record goes to 1-2, 5.03 ERA, 1.42 WHIP. Putkonen took over in the 4th, and he didn't fare any better - 3 runs given up on 3 hits (1 HR, a 3-run shot that did all the damage) and a walk. He whiffed 5 in the process. His record: 1-1, 2.89 ERA, 1.13 WHIP. Downs tossed the final frame for the Tigers, allowing a single and walk that lead nowhere. He stands at 0-2, 4.65 ERA, 1.35 WHIP. Offense: Only 8 baserunners today (7 hits, 1 walk), resulting in 3 runs, and 5 of those 7 hits were extra-bases. They struck out 9 times as well. Sadly, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. Fielder (1-4, .273) had a solo-shot HR (14) to RF in the 4th [Video], and Infante (4-4, .309) a 2-out solo-shot to center in the 9th [No video available at the time of this post] to go with his 17th double of the season. Others with extra-base hits were Martinez (1-4, .233), his 14th of the year, and Jackson (1-4, .289) with his 10th. And that's about all they did. Next game: Tuesday, Tigers (43-38, 17-22 away) @ Blue Jays (41-41, 23-17 home), 7:07 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Fister (6-5, 3.50) vs. Wang (1-1, 5.24). Understatement of the year. All that hype we had off-season and in ST has come crashing down... hard. That'll teach us to believe PR.
At least they're only 1/2 game back of Cleveland, so the season's not lost by any means, but unless something is done, these boys aren't going anywhere. |

Heck, last year look how fast everyone fell in love with Quenton Berry. Even when it was clear the dude was in way over his head, we rooted for him. Why, the dude showed emotion and spirit. |

What we have here are a bunch of veterans who know their jobs and can generally perform with the exception of a big clog in the middle of the line-up and a catching staff that sorely misses Avila's steady hand with the pitchers.
But I agree, they don't show any fire, just steadiness. Yeah, they have a competitive desire to win, and I have no doubt things are good in the clubhouse... but there's more to winning than just talent. It feels like they're just going through the motions and picking up their paycheck. Someone needs to start throwing fits when the team screws up or don't support the pitcher. (How about it, Fister? Mad enough to throw a few bats yet? In your place, I'd be all over these guys up one side and down the other.) In short, they need a real PIA in the clubhouse who will keep them on their toes. Hell, maybe Leyland's the problem in all of this - he seems to have the emotional range of a teaspoon when it comes to riding his roster. The only time he gets mad is when the press gets on his nerves or asks some needling questions about their performance. Steadiness isn't going to win games. It'll keep them in the hunt, and that's it. |

Man, Cleveland is really rolling. Kudos to them.
Hoping Max can make it two in a row for our boys. They've got to start filling this hole now while they can still see the sun.

hopefully this will finally get the fire in their belly .... they have been flat much of the year. the only thing really thats been saving them is Caberra and defense (which ties in with pitching too)

What a ride Scherzer is on. Getting to 14-0 against the Indians will be a tall order.

From an Indians perspective, I was feeling pretty good about the series this weekend until late in yesterday's game. Nothing like blowing a 5-0 lead in the sixth to deflate the balloon. We had similar problems all week in KC.
The Tribe has to win tonight with Porcello v. Masterson as the other matchups probably favor the Tigers. We also luck out and miss facing Verlander (and maybe more importantly, pitching Ubaldo). Unfortunately, I think the key to the series will probably be which bullpen implodes the least. The Tribe bullpen (outside of maybe Perez and Joe Smith) has been pretty bad of late, even against teams like KC and Chicago that aren't particularly good offensive clubs. |

Nice, roughed up Masterson and the lead is 2.5.
I miss you Randy!

I forgot Rondon. Good place to slip him in for a little confidence building last night. One inning with 2 Ks!

Good morning - and I'm back from a sorely-needed vacation. Looks like that's when the Tigers choose to go on a major tear!
Maybe I should go away more often, ha. ![]() I'll restart the recaps beginning with today's game against the Tribe. Let's see what happened... 1. Tigers on a 5-game winning streak, sitting at 48-38, 1st in the division by 3.5 games. They've evened up their road record to 22-22, thanks to this trip. 2. There's been two roster changes: Matt Tuiasosopo has come off the DL, and poor Avisail Garcia had to take the escalator down to Toledo yet again. Wonder if he has revolving door syndrome yet? Anibal Sanchez came off the DL, punting Jose Alvarez back to Toledo - and it looks like he pitched quite well in his return. ![]() Roster section updated. 3. Buncha Tigers made the All-Star roster: P Max Scherzer (fan vote) P Justin Verlander (Leyland's choice) 3B Miguel Cabrera (fan vote, starter; 1st time selected as a starter due to other vote-winning guys at his 1B/3B position in previous years.) 1B Prince Fielder (player vote) RF Torii Hunter (player vote) Ss Jhonny Peralta (player vote) There will be a "Final Man" vote, in which 1 of 5 selected players will get a shot at making the roster. Joaquin Benoit is in that group. Congrats to the Boys! I now return you to your regularly scheduled static until after today's game. Last edited by RandyTiger; 07-07-2013 at 11:44 AM. Indians 9, Tigers 6. [Boxscore]
Summary: Pitching issues snap Cats' winning streak. Pitching: Fister ran into an old, familiar problem - little run support - and struggled early on, giving up 4 runs in the 1st alone before ultimately finishing with 6 runs (3 HR) given up on 6 hits and 3 walks spread over 6 innings. He earned a no-decision, thanks to late-inning heroics, so his record stands at 6-5, 4.07 ERA, 1.23 WHIP. (On the subject of run support, I got curious and did some checking. Fister is drawing 4.50 per game, good for 32nd in MLB and 4th for the team's starters. Porcello is last on the team and 53rd in the league with 4.06, while Scherzer is 1st in the league with 6.29! Stats do not include today's game, but that gives you a rough idea of where things stand.) Reed, fresh from his call-up from Toledo, worked the 7th, tossing a perfect inning and collecting 1 strikeout. Record: 0-0, 2.38 ERA, 1.24 WHIP in 11.1 innings (9 K's). Alburquerque began the 8th - and immediately ran into trouble, giving up a walk and 2-run HR before getting his first out - a strikeout - and then issued another walk. Leyland wisely pulled him at that point. He took the loss, of course, so he stands at 1-2, 3.38 ERA, 1.69 WHIP over 21.1 innings with 37 K's. Hopefully, he'll acquire some form of control soon. Hopefully. Putkonen closed out the 8th, giving up a single and getting a punch-out. Record: 1-1, 2.75 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, with 17 K's in 19.2 innings. Offense: It appeared early on they were going have another no-show offense, but once Fister departed, they went into action. Guess they just don't like him on the mound, ha. The only run they had until late game was Miggy's solo-whopper into the left-field stands, his 28th of the year. [Video] I think every missile-launch warning satellite in orbit picked up on it, ha. Kidding, but you get the idea. He finished 4-4 (.368) with the aforementioned homer and 2 RBI (90, and it's not even the ASB yet!). He even had a rare double-steal with Fielder (3rd SB of the year, 1st for Prince). This guy is a monster - and I'm glad he's on our team. Torii Hunter had a great day too - 2 for 5 (.309) with a 3-run blast (6th) in the 8th [video], and 4 RBI (42), all of which came in the 7th and 8th innings to help tie up the game. Other than that, the Tigers had 13 hits and 5 walks, with every starter getting at least 1 hit. Unfortuately, only 3 of them were extra-bases, with Santiago collecting his 5th double to go with Miggy's and Torii's homers. They had plenty of opportunities to score, but they just couldn't pull the trigger, as their 4-13 RISP and 11 LOB show. Next game: Tigers (48-39, 22-23 away) @ Indians (46-42, 25-17 home), 7:05 Eastern. TV: FS-D. Radio: 97.1 The Ticket. Projected starters: Scherzer (13-0, 3.09) vs. Kazmir (4-4, 4.86). |
