Duran destroyed Morales and goes for Benny Leonard!
Municipal Gymnasium, Colon, Panama, 2001-02-06
WBC LW ELIMINATORY TITLE FIGHT Roberto Duran 14-2-1 (11) TKO1 Eduardo Morales 8-10-1 (4) As it was expected this fight was a real mismatch, nobody knows why the WBC selected Eduardo Morales for this eliminatory fight, but it mattered little to Roberto Duran who destroyed the argentine on less than three minutes. Duran battered Morales from the first second of the fight hurting him several times until feinting a body shot and conecting a great hook to Morales’ head that let him out on his feet forcing the referee to stop the fight. Now a great fight is waiting us next month : undefeated WBC champion Benny Leonard against former WBO champ Robeto Duran. Also on the undercard: FW: Celestino Caballero 7-9-0 (2) UD10 Victor Hugo Paz 3-13-0 (0) LW: Julio Diaz 13-4-0 (9) KO7 Billy Costello 4-13-2 (1) JWW: Juan Martin Coggi 14-6-0 (6) TKO5 David Kamau 5-12-1 (2) FLY: Rocky Gattellari 10-7-0 (2) UD10 Peter Mathebula 4-15-0 (1) JWW: Omar Weis 5-14-0 (0) TKO8 Gene Hatcher 6-11-0 (3) JLW: Kennedy McKinney 8-5-1 (3) TKO6 Janos Nagy 12-11-1 (7) Last edited by Thomas Hearns; 08-15-2012 at 11:04 AM. |

Gans outpointed Nelson and is the next for Joe Brown
Coconut Creek Casino, Coconut Creek, FL, United States, 2001-02-07
WBA LW ELIMINATORY TITLE FIGHT Joe Gans 13-3-1 (5) UD12 Battling Nelson 14-8-1 (9) As it was expected it was a very competitive fight between this two good lightweights. But Joe Gans was a bit better and now he will face Joe Brown for the WBA LW title next month. Nelson started the fight better winning the first two rounds both were very competitive ones. Gans started to recover winning the following two rounds and for the first time totally dominating the fight on the fifth round. Gans continued his momentum winning the sixth round but Nelson won the seventh one to put himself on the fight again. On the eighth round Gans totally outboxed and outlanded Nelson to easily won the stanza. The ninth round was an even one, but on the tenth Gans again had a great round hurting Nelson with a cross. Nelson put his las effort on the elventh round and won it on a onesided form also putting gans on trouble near the end of the stanza. Finally Gans won the last round to secure his victory. My scorecard was 116-113 and the official ones were 116-113 (x2) and the official ones were 116-113 (x2) and 116-112. Also on the undercard: SHW: Sherman Williams 5-13-1 (2) KO6 Maurice Harris 5-8-0 (2) JLW: Mike Anchondo 11-7-1 (3) UD10 Claudio Martinet 6-9-2 (1) CW: O'Neil Bell 4-8-0 (2) TKO8 Dennis Lebedev 10-6-1 (5) SHW: Robert Helenius 8-7-0 (6) SD10 Chris Arreola 10-8-0 (6) WW: Antonio Margarito 10-4-1 (4) KO1 Angel Espada 6-6-2 (1) LW: Levander Johnson 3-12-1 (1) TKO8 Julien Lorcy 5-14-1 (3) Last edited by Thomas Hearns; 08-16-2012 at 01:48 PM. |

Ike Williams will face Whitaker next month
Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, NY, United States, 2001-02-08
IBF ELIMINATORY TITLE FIGHT Ike Williams 14-4-0 (8) MD12 Freddie Welsh 15-3-3 (5) Former WBO champion Ike Williams scored a slim MD12 win against Freddie Welsh and will be the next challenger for the undefeated IBF world champion Pernell Whitaker. The pair split the first two rounds and on the third round Williams connected a big combination that dropped Welsh for a six count. Welsh got up and survivied the round without more trouble. Williams continued his momentum winning the fourth round too. Welsh tryed to react edging the fifth round but Willaims reagined the control on the following round. Welsh had his best round on the seventh one clearly dominating Williams for the first time on the fight but Williams answered winning the eighth round on a one-sided form. Welsh edged the ninth round but Williams won the following two stanzas, Welsh tried to pressure the action on the last stanza and won it convincingly. My scorecard was 115-112 for Williams and the official ones were 115-111 115-112 for Williams and 113-113. Also on the undercard: SMW: Anthony Hanshaw 11-9-1 (5) SD10 Robert Stieglitz 8-10-1 (3) LHW: Harold Johnson 13-5-1 (4) UD10 Daniel Judah 3-15-0 (0) MW: Mickey Walker 17-5-1 (13) UD10 Tony Licata 3-13-0 (0) WW: Paddy Duffy 5-11-0 (2) MD10 Ariel Chaves 5-13-0 (1) HW: Ken Norton 12-4-0 (10) UD10 Alfredo Evangelista 2-11-1 (1) CW: Carlos DeLeon 7-8-1 (1) KO7 Herbie Hide 6-9-1 (5) Last edited by Thomas Hearns; 08-16-2012 at 01:47 PM. |
