Apologies for the delay, guys. But we're set to go, and the first season update will be up tomorrow.

I give everyone their rookie ratings to start and their peaks as potentials. The fun is seeing who reaches their peak.

Reading this again, I assume you're talking about the draft ignoring need, not the order of the players themselves...shouldn't have come on here that early this morning

Last thought is what I meant. Like a team with George brett drafting Mike Schmidt when their ace pitcher is Sidney ponson.

Because my drafts are so short - 5 rounds - I've contemplated drafting for everyone myself. I just like staying out of the management in these leagues as much as possible. But it's something I may reconsider.

Disappointing start for the Hitmen, although the blow is softened by the overall mediocrity of the NL West. Still just 3.5 games back with plenty of room for improvement.

Pitching has been mediocre, but the offense has sputtered out of the gate. Ruth hit 1 homer with a .678 OPS in April. He posted a 1.031 OPS in the spring. They will improve, I'm certain. Too much offense not to.

April Review (cont.)

Northern League Report

The Louisville Racers have surged to the front as the 2011 season begins, led by strong pitching and rookie Willard Marshall's great month. The rookie Marshall hit .343 in April, while the reigning NL Outstanding Hitter, Dan Brouthers, banged out 7 homers and drove in 23 on the month for an offense that leads the Northern League in runs. Roy Oswalt, arguably baseball's most underappreciated star (he's the PBL's alltime wins leader with 44), picked up four wins on the month and looks poised for a third straight excellent season.

In New York, the Heroes have gotten similar benefit from one of their rookies, as Johnny Lipon took over the shortstop job and hit .415 in his first month. Jim McCormick (4-1, 3.08) has been excellent again. But the surprise has been Frank Killen. After going 10-6 with a 3.88 ERA in 2009, Killen was named the PBLs top prospect, only to spend virtually all of last season on the reserve squad. But he's back, and in April went 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA.

The Charlotte Cougars are mashing and pitching, leading the Northern League in homers with 29, and in bullpen ERA with a sparkling 1.97 mark. Mark Reynolds (.379-6-20) and Harry Davis (.364-7-21) are off to flying starts, while Josh Johnson (3-1, 3.89) seems poised to take another step forward. Great to see is the return of Matt Cain, who missed all of last season following elbow surgery. Cain made three appearances in April, picking up a win and a save while posting a 1.29 ERA.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, the Ringers have been erratic, but the clutch hit is saving them. Despite ranking 7th of 8 in average, OBP and OPS, the Ringers have managed to rank second in runs. There are some changes here, as it seems Victor Martinez (.239-1-6) and Ian Kinsler (.218-1-10) have been given the catcher and second base jobs, respectively, from Jocko Milligan and George Scales - who was signed after Los Angeles released him after last season. Satchel Paige (2-3, 3.89) and Joel Pineiro (3-2, 2.87) are throwing well, but waiting for Charley Radbourn (2-1, 5.87) to pick up the pace in a division that currently sees all four teams above .500.

Out west, there's a lot of sputtering, but the Indianapolis Engines lead the way, albeit by percentage points. Nick Johnson (.360-4-19) is off to a great start, sliding Jake Beckley (.296-1-8) into the DH slot for a potent punch. Top pick Stan Musial (.202-5-19) has provided new punch, and while his average has faltered to start, he's drawn 15 walks already. The pitching woes that cropped up last season have continued in the early going, though, as the Engines rank 7th in ERA at 4.97.

The Wichita Brigade sit a tick behind Indianapolis, but it will remain to be seen how an injury ravaged crew weathers the storm. Jonas Gaines (10-4, 3.34) is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Rube Waddell (2-2, 7.84) has been DL'd with shoulder joint irritation. Jimmy Sheckard, who went down for the year last May with a ruptured Achilles tendon, is now out with a torn labrum and expected to miss three months. And the always injured Spotswood Poles is down again, this time with an oblique strain, marking his 5th trip to the disabled list in the last 12 months.

In Sacramento, the most notable point to be made is that the Stingers signed pitcher Webster McDonald. If you wonder why that's important, it's because McDonald was released by the Orlando Orcas, which itself is important because McDonald was the player Orlando received in exchange for Ryan Howard last season in a trade that confused, well, everyone. But if you're looking for hope in Sacramento, it may come in the form of George Hall. The winner of the NL Outstanding Hitter Award in the inaugural season of 2009, Hall hit .353 with 51 homers and 126 RBI in that campaign. Last year, Hall declined to .276-13-59 after battling injuries early in the year. But Hall hit .293 with 5 homers and 18 RBI for April...a pace that would put him over 30 homers and 100 RBI for the year. His return to form could have major impact.

There's no panic in the Chicago Hitmen, at least not yet. Sure, they started the season 8-16, but the whole division has played poorly, meaning they are only 3 1/2 games out. No big deal. The offense has stumbled out of the gate. Babe Ruth and Josh Hamilton each have only one homer, and even Albert Pujols (.266-5-17), while respectable, isn't himself yet. Cy Young has posted a 2.47 ERA in five starts, and has a 1-4 record to show for it. Rube Foster, so good last year, has a 6.98 ERA at this point. It will get better, here.

April Review (cont.)

Southern League Report

The defending champion New Orleans Knights have picked up right where they left off last season, going 17-8 in April to get off to a first-place start. The trio of Mark Prior (3-2, 2.89), Doc McJames (4-1, 2.65) and Dontrelle Willis (4-1, 2.11) are leading the way, with the Knights having posted a collective 3.05 ERA so far. The losses of Topsy Hartsel (broken hand) and Curtis Granderson (hamstring) haven't derailed the champs, whose biggest change is the position swap of Ross Barnes and George Wright - Barnes now plays short and Wright plays second.

Tim Keefe is on his way to being the comeback story of the year if he can keep this up. The Orlando Orcas traded spare part Tom Brown to Arizona to get Keefe, who is universally regarded as having great potential but lost 24 games last year. So far, Keefe has posted a 2.57 ERA and hurled four complete games in five starts as the Orcas stand at 13-11, led by Sam Crawford (.340-5-24).

The Memphis Strummers stand at .500, getting the usual great performance from 2-time Outstanding Hitter Oscar Charleston, and surprise production from Ty Wigginton (.357-3-18). Ryan Braun (.203-6-24) is producing runs despite few hits, while Ichiro has found himself assigned to the bench to start the year in a surprising move. On the hill, Tim Lincecum (4-2, 3.33), Lady Baldwin (3-2, 3.57) and Frank Dwyer (3-0, 3.22) have led the rotation to a good start, though the bullpen's ERA is above 7.

It looks like the Arizona Sandmen have found an infield that sticks. For the first year-and-a-half of their existence, the Sandmen shuffled second base, shortstop and third base with mixed results. Late last year, they cemented Willie Wells at shortstop and moved the speedy Jose Reyes from short to second. Wells (.265-3-14) has been a rock at short, and Reyes (.347-1-8 with 9 steals) is becoming the dynamic force Arizona anticipated when drafting him. At first, Ryan Howard (.259-6-19) may well be the best trade pickup in the PBL's short history.

The Las Vegas Bosses are somewhat mirroring the Northern League's Philadelphia Ringers. The Bosses are 5th in OPS, yet league the South in runs behind 7 homers from Alejandro Oms, who has become one of the PBL's best players. The consistent Jouett Meekin (3-0, 2.70) is off to a fine start.

The San Antonio Sheriffs have the best early 1-2-3 punch of any pitching staff. Ted Trent (2-1, 1.82), Dick Rudolph (4-1, 1.06) and Joe McGinnity (4-1, 2.34) have been brilliant, offsetting the struggling start of Brandon Webb (0-4, 6.61) to keep a struggling lineup - hurt by injuries to leadoff man Scott Podsednik (broken hand) and Buck O'Neil (quad strain) - afloat.

Despite having the three Player of the Week award winners, one of whom was the Batter of the Month, the Los Angeles Idols are 8-16.

May Review (cont.)

Northern League Report

The Louisville Racers continue their strong start, going 17-12 on the month as they continue to get big hits and strong pitching. Dan Brouthers (.299-13-44),as always, leads the way, but he's getting help he's hardly used to. Nobody matches his numbers, but Joe Kelley, Lefty Marr, Willard Marshall and Billy Southworth each have five homers already. Contrast that with last year, when Kelley was second on the team with 11. On the hill, Roy Oswalt (6-1, 3.02) and Edinson Volquez (6-2, 2.80) are both off of to great starts. They'll be tested, though, as closer Francisco Rodriguez (1-1, 8 SV) and starter Deacon Phillippe (5-4, 3.68) are both expected to miss four months.

That comes as good news for the Charlotte Cougars, who have their own injury to deal with, as Josh Johnson (5-1, 3.03) is expected to be out about three months with a shoulder injury. That injury leads Charlotte to hope Matt Cain (1-0, 4.40) is fully recovered from his elbow surgery as he will enter the rotation. The Cougars went 19-10 in May as the top three of Jack Stivetts (5-4, 3.57), Ben Sheets (5-2, 3.07) and Cliff Lee (6-4, 3.23) carried them. They aren't drawing walks or hitting for average, but the Cougars are getting some pop: Fred Dunlap has 11 homers and Harry Davis has 10.

It's far too early to talk pennant race, but the defending Northern League champion New York Heroes sit in third, only a game out. Roger Connor has only three homers, continuing a downward power trend since the inaugural 2009 campaign. But he's batting .350. Taking a step backward is David Wright, who leads the team with six homers but is batting only .234. Frank Killen (7-1, 1.34) has been outstanding, Jack Taylor (4-1, 2.81) and Jim McCormick (7-3, 3.76) have been strong and Bill Byrd (3-7, 4.31) has pitched to some tough luck. His BABIP is .323. Last year, when he went 21-6 with a 3.18 ERA? .255.

The Philadelphia Ringers are mashing homers, a league leading 62 so far, and not playing badly despite their last place status. They are second in runs and fourth in ERA, so they're in the top half on both halves of the game. John O'Rourke (.318-17-48) seems to have lifted his power stroke back to the numbers of two years ago, when he banged 47 homers. Charley Jones, who himself hit 47 a year ago, has 12 despite batting only .209. Satchel Paige (2-3, 6.23) had a rough month on the hill, having given up 12 runs and 19 hits in 8 2/3 over his last two starts.

Rube Waddell has a 6.49 ERA. Jay Hughes - 33-18 in his career coming into this season - is 1-7 with a 6.14 ERA and has been put in the bullpen. All-Star Robinson Cano is hitting .383 - but doing so off the bench in a move nobody is quite sure what to make of. And yet, the Wichita Brigade are where they always seem to be...first place. True, they are only three games over .500, but regardless, they are in the driver's seat again. Their choice of two shortstops in the draft when the incumbent was last year's Outstanding Rookie was criticized. The draftees? Johnny Pesky is hitting .315 and playing second base. Buddy Kerr is hitting .348 and starting at short. And the incumbent, Mike Moynahan, is DHing and hitting .281, second on the team with 33 RBI. Skipper Whitey Herzog seems to push all the right buttons, even if they're questionable ones.

In Sacramento, the Stingers are relying on George Hall (.282-14-37) to keep them afloat. The league's worst offense and 6th ranked pitching staff - hurt by the injury to Cole Hamels (3-1, 4.14) - are still out by only 2 1/2.

The Indianapolis Racers saw rookies Stan Musial and Tiny Bonham go down in consecutive days. Musial (.266-8-33) was trying to play through an ankle sprain when he left with a back strain that's sidelined him for a couple of weeks. Bonham (4-4, 4.23) is suffering tendinitis and is expected to miss two more weeks. Surprising in his performance has been Nick Johnson (.329-7-46), among the league leaders in average and RBI.

Some are starting to feel that 2011 seems a bit too much like 2009 for the Chicago Hitmen. The team has all the talent in the world, yet seems to be snakebit, particularly with respect to injuries (which seem to be up around the PBL in general in the early going this year). Cy Young posted a 3.25 ERA before developing tendinitis expected to sideline him for two months. Johan Santana, who it seems was being protected from something, is now disabled and quite possibly done for the season. He didn't take the mound in April, despite being active, and made five appearances in May before being shut down. The story here, however, may be Babe Ruth. Last year's top draft pick, Ruth put up a strong first campaign (.280-25-87) before going down with a leg injury late in the year. This was supposed to be the next step. But Ruth (.252-3-10) has played sparingly this year. Rookie Eddie Waitkus (.257-7-34) has taken hold of the first base job, pushing Adam Dunn (.200-8-20) into the outfield with Albert Pujols (.280-8-34) and Josh Hamilton (.354-7-25). Dunn hit 34 homers and drove in 105 last year, and it's admitted he's formidable, but some feel there's more at work here - perhaps a love of the night life on Ruth's part that the team feels it needs to ground him a bit. "His time will come," is all manager Tony LaRussa would say about it. Ruth has plenty of growing to do, but it won't come from the bench. Once his patience evolves as expected, the sky is the limit. Chicago should be testing that limit now.

May Review (cont.)

Southern League Report

After a flying start, the New Orleans Knights were grounded in May, going 12-17 on the month. The 1-2 punch of Mark Prior (8-3, 3.26) and Dontrelle Willis (6-2, 2.96) continues to pitch well, but an 8-game losing streak to open the month set the team back. Sam Thompson (.304-13-34) and Ross Barnes (.343-6-36) are leading an offense that is second in the league despite an invisible bottom of the order.

They are only 3 1/2 out, but if you don't think the Orlando Orcas miss Ryan Howard's bat, think again. The trade last year stripped power from a team that now ranks last in the Southern League in offense. Bill Hoffer (7-3, 2.71) has been excellent, as has Tim Keefe (3-7, 3.51) who has feel victim to lack of run support. The disappointment of Honus Wagner (.250-5-21) continues, though he is playing his best shortstop in three seasons this year. Sam Crawford (.323-8-41) is left to carry the load.

They are 24-28, and nobody jumps out as having a great year for the Alabama Airmen. But the perennial doormat ranks third in runs and second in ERA, a sign better things could be coming. Joe Mauer (.309-1-21) remains steady on offense and a good handler of a pitching staff led by Dan Haren (7-1, 2.38) and rookie Virgil Trucks (6-3, 2.55).

The Memphis Strummers tanked in May, going 12-17. This franchise seems a bit in disarray right now. Cap Anson (.263-1-14) has been sent to the reserve squad and Ichiro Suzuki has gotten five at bats all year. Oscar Charleston (.304-5-24) has been fine but un-Oscarlike. And the pitching, besides Tim Lincecum (5-5, 3.56), has been horrible, with a Southern League-worst 5.06 ERA.

Their leading hitter is Jason Bay at .266, but all you need to know about the first place San Antonio Sheriffs is pitching. Ted Trent (4-3, 2.37), Dick Rudolph (8-2, 2.14) and Joe McGinnity (7-3, 2.96) pace a rotation backed by baseball's best bullpen (a 2.48 ERA).

There has been no reversal of fortune like the Los Angeles Idols, who followed their 8-16 April with a 20-8 May. Pitching, other than Pitcher of the Month John Clarkson (6-3, 2.60), has been poor. But the lineup is torrid, with an .802 collective OPS paced by batting leader Cal McVey (.357-7-22), Fred Tenney (.347-12-47) and Mike Donlin (.353-12-33).

Major Announcement Planned

The rumor mill is swirling at the Pastime Baseball League brass is reportedly poised to make a major announcement during this year's All-Star break July 11-13. Nobody seems certain as to what the announcement will be, though theories include those of a financial nature - such as a salary cap - a plan regarding free agency as labor negotiations loom, expansion of the league or addition of playoff teams. However, it all seems conjecture at this point, as there's no concrete info coming from anywhere.
