I think the only options are to release him outright and take the financial hit or keep him onboard and pay out the same amount over the years. One thing to think about, if your league has a "cash max" and you are making way more than that in profit, then your extra cash disappears at the end of the year. Release the player to take advantage of that extra profit that you would lose anyway. I did that last year in one league, was going to max my profit at $15mill and then lose an additional $20mill for the season. Cut the player, paid off the $22mill in guaranteed salary and still had $13mill in cash after the year. So technically, the cut only cost me $2mill out of pocket.
