My five favorites would be.

1. Sugar Boy Nando
In a 20+ year career that spanned 4 decades Nando worked his way into the Ring's top ten rankings periodically and was middle-weight champion of Aruba. I adopted him as my boxing Everyman years ago. He symbolizes, for me, every guy who earns his living in the square circle.
2. Elmer "Violent" Ray
I have described Ray as the "Hal Newhouser" of heavyweights. He is the epitome of the under-rated and forgotten black fighters in the first half of the 20th century.
3. Joey Giardello
Began boxing before I was born. Was a ranked fighter when I was in kindergarten. Was ranked throughout my early life. Was still ranked and won a linear title when I was in high school and was still fighting when I got into college. Heart and perseverence personified.
4. Tony Zale
From the steel mills of Gary, making him one of my (and my dad's) favorite local heroes.
5. Stan Ketchell
Stories about this guy awed me as a kid and still do.

I guess that I'm all alone in my admittedly odd fondness for Tex Cobb; quote machine, kick-boxer (and a good one by the way), bad actor and not a completely putrid heavyweight. - Doesn't really surprise me

I remember an interview of Tex Cobb, who was from Philly, and he said that once he saw two wineos fighting over a bottle of booze in a Philadelphia ally and both were throwing left hooks.

Uh...Jackie Robinson, William S. Hart, Tito Fuente, Albert Einstein and Ma Jode...Rats! I always have trouble with these list thingees...Chick Gandil, Red Ryan, Lionel Conacher, Frederick Banting and the guy who did the Maypo commercials....No No! Supposed to be boxers! Concentrate. Lilian Gish? No, don't think that's right. Liberace? Wadda ya mean he was...Gedoudda here! No way! Yer kiddin. Always wondered why he didn't fight more often. (At this point two large orderlies in whites rush Cap and wrap him up in his jacket with the long sleeves at the back.)

I honestly couldn't name just five. Top three would probably be Earnie Shavers Carlos Monzon and Muhammad Ali and then a whole heep of others most of whom have already been mentioned, Tommy Hearns Colin Jones Aaron Pryor etc

I have alot of oldtime favorites based on books I've read and tapes I've seen...such as Rocky Marciano, Harry Greb, Sailor Tom Sharkey, etc..

But I'll make my list from the fighters I saw in the mid to late 70's to early eighties who turned me into a real boxing fan..

I have two lists-

In no particular order my 5 favorites that I grew up watching.

Alexis Arguello-The explosive thin man was not extremely mobile but he was smooth and slipped punches well, exceptional power for his build, he could turn the tide of a fight at anytime. Was as classy a fighter as you would find, always put on a show.

Danny "Little Red" Lopez-I am hard pressed to think of a more exciting fighter than Little Red. Not blessed with an abundance of boxing skill you could count on 2 things when he fought. He would hit the Canvas, and then get back up and knock out his opponent, always looked stiff in the ring to me, but he could punch.

Ray"Boom Boom" Mancini-Another who was not among the most skilled guys out there, he willed himself to win wearing opponents down with the sheer volume of his attack, great heart. I will never forget the 15th round of the second Bramble fight when Mancini, battered and Bloody begged the Ref to let him finish like a Champ, that was a hell of a fight. Still the only time I have gotten teary watching Boxing.

Marvin Hagler-The Marvelous one was a machine in the Ring, a ferocious slugger who developed solid Boxing skills as his career progressed. (I feel he is often underrated in this area) He dominated his division like few had and the Hearns fight is the best 3 rounds of Boxing I have ever seen in a middleweight fight.

Thomas Hearns-The Hitman was a force, his right hand at Welter was as dangerous a punch as there has ever been IMO, he stayed around way too long and did not have the most solid of Chins, but his long rangy punches were smooth and crisp. Chose to punch more than box cause he could, but when he did put choose to Box he was as good as any, ask Sugar Ray.

Top 5 oldtimers (Have seen them all on Film)

Stanley Ketchel Pure ferocity in the ring, this man fought with anger in his heart.

Harry Greb Perpetual motion, punches from all angles non-stop as long as the fight lasted.

Sugar Ray Robinson What can you say about Ray, arguably the best pound for pound ever, he was a poet in the Ring.

Jack Dempsey Fought like a panther stalking his prey, the sight of Jack in the ring was menacing, had as good a killer instinct as anyone in the game.

Henry Armstrong Another like Greb who threw nonstop from every conceivable angle, but with more power, another contender for best P4P of all time.

My 5 favourite fighters (not the best) that I actually remember fighting are:

1) Dave Russell CW/HW Who gave 100% and was good to watch.

2) Lester Ellis JLW Had very fast hands and had power as well.

3) Tony Mundine MW/LHW Big punch, bad chin, exciting.

4) Jimmy Thunder HW His fights usually ended in a KO one way or another.

5) Jeff Fenech FW All action, working class champion.

My 5 favourites who fought before my time (I've only watched on film) are:

1) Bill Lang HW The only World HW title challenger from my hometown.

2) George Cook HW Took on everyone.

3) Max Schmeling HW True champion.

4) Tommy Burns HW A lot of heart for a little bloke.

5) Jack Johnson HW Who stuck it up everyone.

This list would certainly change if I think about it for long but I will shoot right off the top of my head....
Arguello, Benitez, Norton, Hit Man, Saad, Hagler and Davey Moore....sorry, that's seven. Couldn't leave anyone off.

My list should have included Pernell Whittaker and Oscar D, and I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen Carlos Palomino or Michael Carbajal listed. Guess that stretches my list of five to 16, huh?
I liked the inclusion of Henry Armstrong and Tony Zale on other lists, too. Guess I could be headed for 20! LOL

Lee, did you really see Harry Greb on film? I thought none of his films existed except for the training/sparring footage for the Mickey Walker fight.
