Yeah, if your player development report says they weren't able to adjust to the position, he's no closer to attaining it than he was prior to ST. The higher the range of a player at his current position, I *think* there's a better chance for them to learn the one you're trying to make them learn. So, with your lame defensive catcher, the risk WILL be greater. And it's even possible that he will suffer defensive loss at his original position too if he fails.

As far as I know, if you add points to his defensive ability in spring training, that will help the player to earn a better rating at his new position than leaving the defensive points at 5. You'd have to take points from another area in addition to that from which you got the 5 points to allow him to learn a new position, but the player is more likely to get a better new range rating as a result.
