Also, why do they use roman numerals to designate the year a movie was made in the final credits?
So if the movie sits around on a shelf for a couple years, it isn't as obvious it was made 3-4 years ago. Like John Wayne's Jet Pilot--made in 1950, but not released until 1957--but looking at the roman numerals, you wouldn't know that. Of course, since we've entered the MM's, this is a lot harder to hide.

Good point. I didn't even think of this, but it makes sense.

but the Orange Bowl is just that. It's not "Orange Bowl XXIV".

Granted, it's not one of the four(3) major sports, but...?

I guess that from a marketing standpoint, the college bowls don't have any problem referring to it as the 2005 Orange Bowl when in reality it's a "playoff" for the 2004 season. It gets confusing - is the winner of the 2005 Orange Bowl the 2005 National Champion, or the 2004 National Champion?

I'm guessing that's why it's not called the 2005 Super Bowl - was that for the 2005 season or the 2004 season? As for Roman numerals instead of the standard numbering, the creators probably wanted it to sound more regal since they were trying to drum up its popularity, and numbering it in that way likely spurred more conversation about it. Super Bowl I just looks better than Super Bowl 1, anyway.

Regarding the movies, it seems to be a tradition of which the origins are not known.
Thanks a lot Mr. Punster!!

btw, if Aretha Franklin sings at next year's Super Bowl, it will definitely live up to its roman numeral name.

I like the elitist explanation. The NFL is glorious and must project its glory whenever possible.

There were two superbowls played the year I was born. One in January and one in December. That would be a little confusing.

I think it should be the Fed-Ex Pepsi Superbowl of Anaheim.

I thought it looked odd when I saw the Roman numeral date on the end of something that came out in 2000: MM. Now we're up to MMV. But when I was a kid, the dates looked more like MCMLXXXVI (1986).
