6/16 DET @ PHI: WIN 10-8 Hal Andrew has just been put into the rotation and had a shaky start. He gave up 7 ER in 4.1 IP. Rob Blaisdell (4-1, 3.34) came in to relieve him and ended up with the Win after only pitching two outs. Philly CF Hershel Cooley earned POG going 4 for 5, 2R, 5RBI, a double, and a triple. For us, Ray Kress HR'd on a 3 for 4, 2R, 3RBI, 1BB day. Carl Affee also HR'd (2 for 5, 2R, 3RBI, 1BB, & a double). The Greek also had a good game going 3 for 5, 1RBI. Footwangler pitched a scoreless 9th to get his first save of the season as our team’s new closer.

6/17 DET @ NYY: WIN 8-5 Bob Guilderson (7-6, 3.73) got the Win allowing 5 ER in 11 IP. Lloyd Wyman got his the Save by pitching a scoreless 12th. Carl Sandoz got POG goin 5 for 6, 1R, 2RBI, 1BB. Rollin Fish played left today and went 4 for 5, 1R, 3RBI. Affee had another nice game going 3 for 6, 2R. Dimeo went 2 for 6, 1R, 2BB. Bob Guilderson had a brain fart, trying to steal on one of the best arms behind the plate. He was thrown out easily by C Major Lanell.

6/18 DET @ NYY: WIN 4-3 Vic Gorin (10-6, 3.75) got the win and POG giving up 3R (2ER) in 8 IP. Alex Footwangler pitched a scoreless ninth for the Save. Yanks starter Buddy Greenberg went the distance but got the loss giving up 4ER in 9. Yanks RF Ping Hung and SS Frank Kuhn had 3 for 4 efforts. No one had a multi-hit game for us.

6/19 DET @ NYY: Loss 2-10 Wesley Lloyd (2-4, 5.01) had another shaky start giving up 9 ER in 4.1 IP for the loss. Janck Andrade (6-8, 5.03) got the Win after only giving up 2 ER in 8.1 IP. POG went to Yanks LF Allen March who went 2 for 4, 2R, 4RBI, 1HR. For us The Greek continues to be hot going 3 for 4. Bud Moore went 2 for 3, 1R, 1BB, and a double.

6/21 WSH @ DET: WIN 6-3 Hal Andrew (3-0, 4.34) remained loss-less pitching a CG for the win only allowing 3 ER. Ray Dimeo got POG going 3 for 5, 1R, 3RBI, 2 Triples. SS David Castaneda went 3 for 4, 2R. Bud Moore hit a 2R HR in the 1st for his only hit of the game.

Castaneda had another good game going 3 for 4, 1RBI, but was the only decent bat for us today. Hitman Crocitto did the most damage for WSH going 4 for 5. Kahle and McDonald both homered for them.

6/23 WSH @ DET: Loss 3-8 Vic Gorin (10-7, 4.01) got the loss giving up 8R (6ER) in 5IP. WSH starter Red Finley pitched all 9 getting the Win and POG... only gave up 3ER. WSH SS Hitman Crocitto continued to kill us going 3 for 3. For us, Ray Kress and Bud Moore both went 2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB.

6/25 StL @ DET: Loss 6-9 StL SP Fritz Kaufman (5-9, 4.72) had a CG win. He gave up 6R (3ER). Worried Wes (2-5, 5.64) better worry as he has just lost 4 in a row, very badly. This time he gave up 7ER in 5IP and is at risk of losing his spot to Melzer. StL RF Tony Monachino got POG for going 5 for 6, 2R, 3RBI, Triple. For us, Kress HR'd twice going 3 for 5, 3R, 4RBI. Castaneda also hit a solo HR and went 2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI. Dimeo also had a monster game going 4 for 5, 1R.

Alex Footwangler continues to be perfect in Save opportunities and got his third with only 3 pitches today. Cotton Simson (11-7, 3.33) got the CG loss giving up 6ER. StL Tony Monachino kept his hit streak going (now at 20), with a 3 for 5, 1R, 1RBI day. Carl Affee got POG going 2 for 4, 2R, 2RBI, Triple.

6/29 DET @ CLE: WIN 6-0 Worried Wes Lloyd (3-5, 4.91) got a much needed win and POG for his CG shutout. He only allowed 1 hit and 2BB in 9. For us, several guys had 2 hit games. A 2R HR by Affee was a highlight.

6/30 DET @ CLE: WIN 15-3 We swept Cleveland decisively this time... today: 15 hits, 15 runs. Hal Andrew (4-1, 4.60) gave up 3ER in 8.2 IP for the Win and also managed a 3 for 5, 3R, 2RBI day (he's currently hitting .429). POG went to Carl Affee got POG and went 2 for 5, 2R, 5RBI, 1HR. Ray Dimeo also HR'd and Doubled for us going 2 for 4, 3R, 2RBI. Sandoz went 4 for 6, 3R, 3RBI, Double, Triple.

BAD NEWS
-Worried Wes Lloyd had 3 good games, but also 4 terrible games. No changes will be made quite yet, but Melzer has been whining for a spot in the rotation and may get it if Wes continues to be so inconsistent.
-Matt Perly has been off lately and will probably give up some at bats to Ormiston while he rests a strained back here and there.
-Our #1 draft pick Sherm Rorabeck has lived up to his injury prone status. I knew he was a gamble but so far he's been a bust. He is out for another two weeks with a strained back after already giving up 5 weeks with various other injuries.

GOOD NEWS
-We moved up to the #2 spot in the AL by going 8-5 in the last two weeks. We didn't make up any ground on St. Louis, however.
-Our entire starting OF has been hot lately. All three hit around .400 in this last week or so. Dimeo also hit .500 during that stretch. Sandoz and Dimeo both look to have an outside shot at the All-Star game.

PROMOTIONS
-Our 3rd round pick this year 22yo LF/RF Isaac Mitchell has earned a spot on our AAA roster. He should see some time on the active roster this year, at the very least as a September call up.
-21yo RH SP Jack Boe (3rd Rnd pick in '43) also moved up to our AAA club and was immediately thrown into the Ace spot in their rotation.

Matt, thanks for the support. Yah, its good to be winning again. And, thanks goodness Footwangler seems to be Ok in the closer spot so far. Hopefully, he'll continue to do well. I really thought he'd have a break out year for us.

Chappy, I agree. Having to analyze the box scores does help me decided what I need to do with my guys and should provide an interesting look back in the future if I can keep it up.

Will you be giving him a quicker hook setting in team strategies?

Also, whenever you have time, like the AS break or post/pre-season, will you run down some of your prospects? That's always fun.

I'll try to find some time to take a tour of my minor leagues at some point this week.

I don't think I made any changes with the pitching rotation this last update. But if Wes doesn't mellow out, I'd probably move Andrews to #3, Melzer to #4, and then Wes will move to spot start / mop up duties.

But, I'd like to give the guys a chance to settle into their current rolls. I don't like the idea of shaking up the roster more than necessary.

7/1 DET @ CHI: loss 2-5 Bob Guilderson (8-8, 3.77) got the CG Loss giving up 5R (3ER) in 8 IP. Corky Stell (6-9, 3.52) got the Win & POG giving up 2R (1ER) in 8.2 IP. Sox 1b Sunny Davie hit an HR and a double. For us, only Rollin Fish had a good game going 2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, HR filling in at CF.

7/2 DET @ CHI: loss 4-5 Vic Gorin (11-8, 3.88) pitched all 8 innings for us, but gave up 5ER for the loss. Earl Boyd (12-7, 3.80) gave up 4R (3ER) in 8.1 IP for the Win. Sox RF Stu Cripps got POG for going 3 for 4, 1RBI. Carl Affee went 3 for 5, 2R, 1RBI for us.

7/3 DET @ CHI: WIN 3-2 Worried Wes (4-5, 4.35) got the CG Win & POG giving up 2R (0ER). Willard Carte also went the distance giving up 3ER in 9 IP. Bud Moore and Ray Kress were the only multi-hit bats today both going 2 for 4.

7/4 DET @ CHI: loss 4-5 Hal Andrew (4-2, 4.71) pitched a CG, but got the loss after giving up 5ER... 3 of those runs were in the 9th. POG Went to Sox RF Boze Wealot who's PH 2R double in the 9th earned the win.

7/5 NYY @ DET: loss 1-3 Yet another CG, this time by Bob Guilderson (8-9, 3.73) who allowed 3ER in 9 for the loss. We need to give out BP some work at some point, the all star game is coming up and they haven't seen action all week thus far. Willie Dawkins got the Win and POG for only allowing 1 ER in 8. Luther Ormiston hit a double and a triple on a 2 for 4, 1R day. Carl Sandoz also had a nice game going 3 for 4.

7/6 NYY @ DET: loss 4-6 Vic Gorin (11-9, 4.03) has been struggling lately. He got another loss giving up 6ER in 8IP. Jack Andrade got a CG Win giving up 4R (3ER) in 9. Yanks LF Allen March got POG going 1 for 2, 1R, 4RBI, 1HR, 2SacFlys. NYY 3B Tim Dilworth hit 2 doubles on a 3 for 4 day. Ping Hung went 2 for 5 to keep his hit streak alive (now at 22). For us, Dixie Douglas subbed at 1B and went 3 for 3, 1R. Ormiston played 3B and an inning at 1B. He went 2 for 4, 1R. Ray Dimeo went 3 for 5, 1RBI.

7/7 NYY @ DET: WIN 5-4 Once again this week narrowly avoiding a sweep. Worried Wes Lloyd went 3.2 IP with out giving up a run, but had to leave with soreness in his shoulder... should be OK in about a week. Jocko Bradshaw pitched a scoreless 8th & 9th for the Win. All our relievers except for Footwangler got into this last game before the all star break. Carl Affee got POG who went 1 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Perly also looked good (and finally healthy) going 2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI.

7/9 ALLSTAR GAME: WIN 5-1 Ray Kress made it as an OF reserve. He went 1 for 1. Ray Dimeo also made it as an IF reserve but went 0 for 1.

7/12 DET @ CLE: loss 6-9 Hal Andrew (4-3, 4.98) got the loss giving up 6 ER in 7 IP. CLE LF Bill Berry got POG hitting the only HR of the game and going 3 for 5, 3R, 3RBI, + a Double. CLE SS Pip Seneca also had a monster game going 4 for 5, 3R, 1 Double. For us, Carl Affee went 3 for 5, 2RBI. Ray Kress went 2 for 5, 1R. Castaneda went 2 for 3, 1R, 1 Double.

7/13 DET @ CLE: WIN 8-2 Bob Guilderson (9-9, 3.68) got a much needed Win allowing only 2 ER in 7.2 IP. He also went 2 for 4, 2R, 2RBI... one of those hits was a solo HR in the 3rd. Ray Dimeo got POG honors going 3 for 5, 2R, 2RBI, 1 HR, 1 Triple.

7/14 DET @ CLE: loss 1-2 Vic Gorin (11-10) finally had a nice game only giving up 2 ER in 8 for a CG. But, unfortunately he also got the loss as he was out pitched by Billy Crowell (7-13, 3.24) who only gave up 1 ER in 9 for POG and the Win. Carl Affee was the hottest batter of the day going 3 for 4, 1 Double.

7/15 StL @ DET: loss 2-6 For some reason Stan Leveck (4-5, 4.43) got the start in place of injured Worried Wes despite not being my "spot starter". He got the loss giving up 5R (4ER) in 8.2 IP. Fritz Kaufman (7-10, 4.59) pitched a solid game going the distance and only giving up 2ER for the Win and POG honors. Frankie Bowers and Vern Piernatszki both HR'd for StL. Steven Bussell also had a nice game for them going 3 for 4, 1RBI. For us, only Dimeo (2 for 4, 1BB) mutli-hit. Sandoz went 1 for 2, 2RBI, 3BB.

BAD NEWS
-We only went 3-8 and have dropped back down to 4th in the AL, 8.5 games back.
-We lost a lot of close games and yet Footwangler got no time on the mound this sim as we've had few save opportunities.

GOOD NEWS
-Ray Kress and Ray Dimeo both made the All-Star game as reserves.

ROSTER CHANGES & INJURIES
-Perly is healthy again and playing well so he'll go back to getting almost all starts against righties at 3B. Ormiston has also been playing well. Next spring training should be make for an interesting battle.
-Worried Wes should make his next scheduled start. He left a game after 3.2 IP and also missed a start due to a sore shoulder.
-Surprise, Surprise, Rorabeck is nursing yet another injury - this time a bruised ankle.

7/26 DET @ BOS: WIN 7-1 Hal Andrew (7-3, 4.17) allowed only 1 ER for his CG Win. BOS starter Billy Hyberg rarely goes 3 whole innings. He got the loss and only managed 2.2 IP before running out of steam. SS Rusky Lutske went 3 for 4, 1 Double and 1B Bing Holt went 2 for 3, 1BB for BOS. Rex a perfect 3 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB. For us, Ray Kress got POG honors going 2 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 1 Double. Kaladimos went 2 for 4, 2R. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 5, 2R, 1RBI.

7/31 CHI @ DET: loss 2-5 This one went 10. Hal Andrew allowed 2ER in 8.1. But the loss went to Footwangler (6-2, 2.66) who gave up 3 ER in the 10th. For CHI Corky Stell went 8 only allowing 2ER. The win went to Jake Craze (8-8, 4.80) who pitched a hitless 9th & 10th. POG honors went to CHI 2B Danny Lazo who went 2 for 4, 2RBI, 1BB. For us Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4. Matt Perly also went 2 for 4, 1R, 1 Double.

STANDINGS
-We are in forth place in the AL and are now 9.5 games back. Our 7-6 in the last 13 games wasn't enough to keep pace.

BAD NEWS
-As a starter Worried Wes had a good couple of games and several stinkers. He has also spent a lot of time out with multiple injuries this month. He was a fairly reliable reliever and I'm feeling the need to put him back in the pen for now.
-Bob Guilderson had a bad month going 1-5. He didn't pitch bad in all those five losses, but he still founds wins hard to come by.

GOOD NEWS
-Hal Andrew has been pitching pretty decent in the #4 slot.
-Other than a failed hold in that final game, Footwanger has looked good as my Closer. I will probably tell him not to worry about his endurance issues and focus on being the best Closer he can be this spring training.

ROSTER CHANGES
-Harley Melzer looked pretty good in his last couple of starts and is reviving my need to see him in the rotation. I pulled the plug on him early in the year after an injury, but I want to give him a second shot as a starter. He will take Worried Wes' spot in the rotation for now.
-Bud Ulrich is going to move up to AAA. He's gotten his ERA under down to 2.88 so we will try him at the next level.
-Steven Brown was grabbed off waivers. He's a 25yo RH MR who shows good control. He'll stay in AAA for now as I'd like to see a little more Umph in his fastball.

Sherm Rorabeck INJURY WATCH
-Time to spin the wheel and see how Sherm hurt himself this sim: And the survey says!!!!!! ... he is now suffering from a stiff neck that he got while making a catch in the OF - Give that guy some icy hot and tell him to play on.

A few interesting notes:

Fish has hit 4 HR in just 97 AB.

Wes has only 17 K's in 84 IP. That doesn't bode well and probably shows more of his ineffectiveness.

Yea, but unfortunately: 7/31 Roland Fish has lost some power... Roland Fish plate discipline seems to have faded...

At 24, he's exceeding some of his Talent Ratings even with these drops. But, hopefully he'll get those skills back up at spring training and continue to over achive at the plate. With Douglas retiring and Affee turning 36, there's little doubt he'll continue to be on my active roster next year.

My 3rd rounder this year also has a shot at the active roster next year if not sooner. But Fish is my only legit CF if Affee goes down or unexpectedly retires. Well, actually, I do have Ron Campsey, but I'd rather not have to rely on him.

He's got good velocity but below average Stuff. I think he decided on retiring one year too late. He could have gone out on an All-Star note. But this year, he's just looking old.

8/1 CHI @ DET: loss 3-5 Bob Guilderson (9-13, 3.76) gets the loss after allowing 5R (3ER) in 8.1 IP. The win went to Earl Boyd (15-8, 3.82) who allowed 3ER in 8 IP. No one had multiple hits for the Sox. This was anouther one of those games where we outhit our opponent, but the 9BB by Bob is what did us in. Ray Dimeo had a good game going 3 for 5, 1R. Ray Kress got POG going 2 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1 Double, 1 HR.

8/2 DET @ NYY: WIN 5-2 The game was tied in the ninth when Matt Perly's Double sparked a three run inning. Vic Gorin (14-11, 3.59) got the Win and POG allowing only 2 ER in 8IP. Alex Footwangler K'd up two for a scoreless, hitless ninth for the save. Yanks RF Ping Hung went 2 for 4. For us Ray Dimeo went 2 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 3, 1BB. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1 Double.

8/3 DET @ NYY: loss 3-7 Harley Melzer (4-3, 4.84) had a rough day giving up 7R (6ER) in 5.1 IP for the loss. The win and POG went to Rudy Davidson (6-9, 5.23) who went all nine and only gave up 3ER. Several Yanks batters had a good day. For us, Rik the Greek Kaladimos was the only hot bat. He was 2 for 4 and both of his hits were solo HRs.

8/4 DET @ NYY: WIN 9-6 Hal Andrew (8-3, 4.13) gave up 5ER in 8IP but still managed the Win. POG went to Kaladimos who was hot again going 3 for 5, 2R, 2RBI, 1SB, 1 solo HR. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI.

8/5 WSH @ DET: WIN 4-3 Bob Guilderson (10-13, 3.73) got the CG Win and POG giving up only 3ER. 4 Errors by WSH hurt Zolly Schoeter who only gave up 4R but only 1ER in 8 IP for the loss. No one hit well for WSH. For us, Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1RBI. Ray Kress hit a solo HR for his only hit of the day.

8/6 WSH @ DET: WIN 6-2 Vic Gorin (15-11, 3.50) allowed only 1 ER in 8 IP for the win and POG honors. Chris Frays (6-7) went the distance for WSH but gave up 6R (4ER). WSH CF Peter Overton had a good game going 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 2SB. For us, Tom Hoelscher filled in for Dimeo and went 2 for 5, 2R, 2RBI, 1 HR. Bud Moore went 1 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Carl Sandoz hit 2 doubes (2 for 5, 1RBI). Luther Ormiston went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1 Triple.

8/7 WSH @ DET: WIN 3-4 Harley Melzer allowed 3ER in 8IP and was named POG. The Win went to Stan Leveck (4.39, 5-5) who only threw three pitches for the final K and final out of the game. David Castaneda's solo HR in the 9th gave us the Win... it was his only hit of the game. Dimeo went 2 for 4, 2R, 1 Triple.

8/8 DET @ StL: loss 2-3 Hal Andrew only allowed 2ER in 8 IP. But the loss went to Stan Leveck (5-6, 4.46) who couldn't hold the lead this time. The CG Win went to Eugene Spencher who only allowed 2 ER in 9. POG honors went to StL CF John Fahringer who's 2 solo HRs did the most damage. For us, Ray Kress hit a 2R HR. The Greek went 2 for 4.

8/9 DET @ StL: loss 1-3 Bob Guilderson (10-14, 3.68) was out pitched again. He got the CG loss despite only giving up 3R (2ER). POG and CG Win went to Fritz Kaufman (10-12, 4.12) who only allowed 1ER. Matt Perly is the only player for either team who can say he hit well (2 for 3, 1RBI, 1 Double).

8/10 DET @ StL: WIN 4-3 Vic Gorin (16-11, 3.46) gets the Win after giving up 2ER in 7.2 IP. Footwangler gave up a couple of Doubles and 1ER in the 9th before settling down and getting the final out for the Save. Matt Perly got POG going 4 for 4, 1R, 2RBI, 1HR. Rollin Fish filled in at RF and went 2 for 4, 2R, 1BB, 1 Double, 1 Triple.

8/11 DET @ StL: loss 4-6 Harley Melzer (4-4, 4.72) had a rough day giving up 6R (5ER) in 7.2IP for the loss. Cotton Simson gets his 3rd consecutive CG Win against us giving up 4R (3ER). POG went to StL 1B Lester Walk who hit 2 HRs. CF Cy Helbig had a perfect day going 3 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 2BB, 1HR. For us, Carl Affee had a decent game going 2 for 4, 2RBI, 1 Double.

8/12 CLE @ DET: WIN 4-2 Hal Andrew (9-3, 3.81) got POG and CG win for us giving up only 2R (1ER). The CG loss went to Billy Crowell (10-16, 3.18) who gave up 4R (3ER). Carl Affee had another good game going 2 for 4, 2R, 1RBI, 1 Double. Matt Perly went 2 for 4, 1RBI.

8/13 CLE @ DET: loss 1-2 Poor Bob Guilderson (10-15, 3.61). He is once again the victim of lack of run support. He only allowed 2ER in the CG loss. George Bowers (9-12, 3.92) allowed 1R (0ER) in a CG win and got POG honors. Ray Dimeo went 2 for 3, 1R, 1BB. But other than that, a quiet day at the plate for both teams.

8/14 CLE @ DET: loss 3-8 Vic Gorin (16-12, 3.55) allowed 5 ER in 7 IP for the loss. The win and POG honors went to Whacker Roberts (11-13, 4.25). Matt Perly remains hot going 2 for 4, 1RBI. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 4, 1R, 1BB, 1Double. For CLE 1B Ted Varner went 2 for 3, 1RBI... SS Pip Seneca went 2 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1 Double. Whacker Roberts went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1 Double.

8/15 BOS @ DET: WIN 12-6 Harley Melzer (5-4, 5.13) got the Win despite giving up 6ER and a career high 9 BB in 5.2 IP. BOS SS Rusky Lutske went 3 for 4, 1R, 1BB, 1 Double. 1B Bing Holt went 2 for 4, 1R, 3RBI, 1BB, 1HR for them. For us, Ray Kress got POG honors going 2 for 5, 1R, 4RBI, 1HR. Carl Affee went 3 for 4, 4R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1SB, 1 Triple. Bud Moore went 3 for 5, 1R, 1RBI... basically every one but our SS and Pitchers had a great game at the plate as we racked up 17 hits and 5BB.

STANDINGS
-We've played 15 straight games in August as we play every day except for 8/22 this month. We went 8-7. Unfortunately 3 of those losses were against division leading St. Louis. We are 4th in the division and now 13 games back.

BAD NEWS
-Harley Melzer has been a little shakey since being put into the #3 spot in the rotation.
-Poor Bob Guilderson has gone 1-6 in his last seven starts despite pitching well in most of those games. We have a one of the top offenses in the league, but can't seem to put it together on days Bob is pitching.

GOOD NEWS
-Hal Andrew has been hot in his last 7 starts (5-0, 2.28)
-Vic Gorin has been a little up and down, but has still managed a 5-1, 2.25 in his last 6.
-Matt Perly has been tearing it up hitting .619 in his last 7 games.
-Ray Kress is for sure on of our MVPs at the plate, but he is making a case for himself for a gold glove as he has a perfect fielding % so far this year.
-Zero injuries despite the non-stop schedule this month - Even Sherm Rorabeck managed to get healthy!!!!

This win broke up the Browns' 12-game winning streak.

It also looks like soon after you swept Washington, they began their 7-game winning streak.

I think you can go to the league leaders section of the game, go to pitching stats and find run support. I wonder how far down Guilderson is on that list. He may be one of the least supported pitchers in the league.

Glad to see my grandfather is filling in nicely. It's too bad the Braves are terrible.

Yea, it's nice having a guy who can step in at any OF position.

When I played ball, I was pretty much that speedy, stick me anywhere in the OF kinda guy. I was more the no-power, high walk rate, beat out the throw for an IF single kind of hitter, so in that respect I was not like Fish. But in all other ways, he reminds me of me.

I always have someone like Fish on any team I control.

8/16 BOS @ DET: WIN 8-5 Hal Andrew (10-3, 3.88) guts out a CG WIN in which he allowed 5ER. Hal got the benefit of a 5R 8th inning by us after he gave up 4, in the 7th. POG went to Rollin Fish (1 for 4, 1R, 3RBI) who's Triple with the bases loaded did the most damage in the 8th. Kaladimos went 2 for 3, 1RBI. Bud Moore went 1 for 2, 3R, 1RBI, 2BB.

8/17 BOS @ DET: WIN 4-2 Bob Guilderson (11-15, 3.56) gets the CG Win and POG after only giving up 2ER. BOS SS Rusky Lutske went 2 for 3, 1R, 1BB. For us, Kaladimos had another good game going 3 for 4, 1R, 2RBI 1HR

8/18 BOS @ DET: loss 2-4 Vic Gorin (16-13, 3.57) gets the CG loss giving up 4ER. Three of the runs came compliments of a Big Holt Double with bases loaded in the 6th giving the CG POG Win to Sloppy Mosich who gave up 2R (0ER). CF Al Arsenault also had a good game for them going 2 for 4, 1HR. No one had a good day at the plate for us.

8/19 DET @ CLE: WIN 3-2 This was a weird game. Hal Melzer got POG, but not the Win as this game went 12 innings. He only gave up 2R (1ER) in 9 IP. Stan Leveck (6-6, 4.24) pitched a scoreless 10th & 11th for the Win. For some reason in the 12th Alex Footwangler was called in to PR for Ormiston who had hit a PH Double. Alex ended up being the game winning run as Vincent Solinger brought him home with a PH single. Lloyd Wyman closed out the 12th for the Save. Carl Sandoz hit well going 2 for 3, 2RBI, 1 Double, 1SacFly.

8/20 DET @ CLE: WIN 3-2 Worried Wes (5-6, 4.32) got a the spot start for a CG POG Win giving up only 2ER, 3H, 3BB. 2 of those hits went to CLE C Fred Storey (2 for 4, 1R). Ray Kress hit well for us going 2 for 4, 1R, 2RBI.

8/21 DET @ CLE: loss 0-1 We out hit CLE 8-4, but couldn't score against Billy Crowell who gave up 0ER & 0BB in a CG POG WIN. Poor Poor Bob Guilderson pitched another nice game for naught. He only allowed 1ER in 8 IP for the CG Loss. David Castaneda went 2 for 4. Carl Affee was a perfect 4 for 4.

8/23 DET @ CHI: WIN 10-4 Finally, our bats wake up after a MUCH needed day off. Vic Gorin (17-13, 3.59) gets the Win despite giving up 4ER in 8.2IP. POG went to Rik the Greek Kalamidos who went 3 for 4, 3R, 4RBI, 1BB, 1HR, 1Triple. Ray Kress went 3 for 5, 2R. Bud Moore went 2 for 3, 3R, 1RBI, 2BB. Matt Perly hit 2 for 5, 2R, 1RBI. Fish filled in at CF and went 2 for 5, 3RBI, 1 Double.

8/24 DET @ CHI: WIN 7-5 Seeing 4 errors in the box score makes me cringe. Two of them went to Harley Melzer (6-4, 4.68) who got a CG win despite giving up 5ER. SS Rex Seelinger (3 for 4, 1R) and RF Stu Cripps (2 for 4, 1BB, 1 Double) hit well for the ChiSox. For us, Ray Dimeo hit well going 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 2Doubles, 1SacFly. Mat Perly got POG goin 2 for 4, 2R, 2RBI, 1 Double. Bud Moore was 2 for 4, 2R. Dave Castaneda went 2 for 3, 1R, 1RBI.

8/25 DET @ CHI: loss 7-8 Hal Andrew (10-4, 3.76) went 7 IP and gave up 8R although only 1 was "earned". The WIN went to Thomas Collaco (3-3, 5.40) who allowed 4 ER in 7IP. Sox 1B Sunny Davie got POG going 3 for 5, 1R, 4RBI, 1 Grand Slam. Chester Munch also hit well for them going 3 for 4, 1BB, 1 Double. For us, Ray Kress went 2 for 4, 2R, 1BB. Hal Andrew went 2 for 3, 1RBI and is hitting .250 this year.

8/26 DET @ WSH: WIN 6-4 Bob Guilderson (12-16, 3.47) got a CG Win giving up 4R (3ER). Ray Kress got POG going 2 for 3, 3RBI, 1BB, 1SacFly. Ray Dimeo went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1BB, 1HR. Carl Affee was even better going 4 for 5, 2R, 1 Triple. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 5, 3R, 1 Double. The Greek went 2 for 4.

8/27 DET @ WSH: WIN 7-2 Vic Gorin (18-13, 3.55) got the Win giving up 2ER in 8IP. Bud Moore got POG for going 2 for 5, 1R, 3RBI, 1HR. Ray Kress also homered going 1 for 3, 2R, 1RBI, 2BB. Carl Affee went 3 for 5, 1R, 2RBI, 1Double. Ray Dimeo was 2 for 4, 2R, 1SB.

8/28 DET @ WSH: WIN 3-1 Harley Melzer (7-4, 4.37) got the WIN and POG giving up only 1ER & 3 hits in 8IP. Alex Footwangler finally got a Save opportunity and pitched a scoreless 9th. One of those WSH hits was a solo HR from C Dutch Kahle. For us, Carl Sandoz went 3 for 4, 1RBI, 1 Double. Ray Dimeo went 2 for 4, 1R, 1RBI, 1Double. Peter Murovic filled in at C and went 2 for 4, 1R. Rik the Greek went 2 for 4, 1R, 1SB.

8/29 PHI @ DET: WIN 3-0 Hal Andrew (11-4, 3.56) got the CG Shutout Win for POG. Hal only gave up 3 hits and 3BB. Chubby Allen got the CG loss despite only giving up 3ER. Carl Sandoz went 2 for 3, 1R. Rik Kaladimos went 2 for 4, 1RBI.

8/30 PHI @ DET: WIN 3-2 Bob Guilderson (13-16, 3.42) is fighting hard to not end the season with a losing record. He only gave up 2 ER in a CG POG WIN. Back to back solo HRs by Carl Affee and Ray Kress gave Bob the lead in the 3rd. Dixie Douglas got a rare start at 1B and went 2 for 3, 1R, 1Double.

8/31 PHI @ DET: WIN 3-0 Vic Gorin (19-13, 3.42) got the POG CG Shutout Win. He out pitched Lefty Bowden who also went the distance but gave up 3ER. Luther Ormiston (1 for 2, 2R, 1RBI, 1B) homered and so did David Castaneda (1 for 2, 1R, 1RBI).

STANDINGS
-We had a great end of August going 12-3. We move up to #3 in the AL

BAD NEWS
-Despite the nice record over the last couple of weeks, we only made up 1 game - now at 12 games back and that lead is starting to feel insurmountable.
-Luther Ormiston's skill scores are looking very good but he's only hitting .254. I still think he has a good shot at winning 3B next year. Getting in this full year is good for him and a little bit of tweaking on his swing in spring training will hopefully turn him into a monster at the plate. Perly will still get a shot at 3B as well as a chance to unseat Dimeo at 2B. Too bad none of those three ever learned to play SS. I would love to have all three in the line up with my big hitting OF.

GOOD NEWS
-I was happy to see our starters playing well. The only bad thing is Alex Footwanger's reliable ERA is being wasted with all these CG wins.
-We had a lul in the offense, but woke up a bit after a much needed day off.
-Sherm managed an entire month with out an injury and even improved his defense in RF. Now, if he can just start making better contact at the plate, he could move up to AA next year.
-Ray Kress continues to play perfectly in LF - 0 errors.

Guilderson was a pinch runner because he has 6 speed.

Washington was on an impressive 17-game winning streak when yuo went up against them, and the Tigers promptly swept them.

You didn't make up any room in the standings because both Washington (see streak above) and St. Louis have been lights-out in August.

Actually, it was Footwangler that was used as a PR and yea, he can wangle pretty darn fast for a pitcher. Ormiston has good base running instincts, but yea I guess speed is more important in that situation. Luckily Lloyd Wyman settled down after allowing 2 hits to get the Save. If I had been watching that game, I'd been nervous as heck having Loyd in there instead of the Alex.

Just out of curiosity, could a pitcher be in the bullpen warming up, be called into PR and then pitch the next inning? Seems like it would be legal if you did a double switch of some kind. Might be a little unsettling for the pitcher tho and thus just as much of a gamble as having Wyman close out a game.

I'm not 100% certain, but I'd say yes. Any pinch runner or pinch hitter can be inserted into the game after the inning, and a iptcher is the same as any other position in the lineup. Man, where's jdw when you need him?

You know, I better start being nicer to Wyman or he might demand a trade in the off season.

FYI: Guilderson has the 10th worst run support per game in the majors (5th worst in the AL) at 4.0 runs per 9 IP. The worst run support belongs to Cleveland's George Bowers at 3.2. The best is Detroit's Hal Andrew by a wide margin at 6.8 with the next best support coming to Van Melbourn of Washington at 5.8 (a full run per 9 IP less). Hence Hal's 11-4 record.

This is likely due mostly to the fact that the Tigers are usually facing other teams' #4 starter when Hal's on the mound, while they face other aces when Guilderson starts.

Yea, I noticed Hal was getting more luv than Bob. But, we've finally been putting up more runs for Bob over the last month giving him 5-1 over the last 7 starts. All he needs is one more win to get to .500. An already good offense should be even better next year. Assuming Affee and his fractured foot doesn't retire and Bob's numbers don't take too much of a hit, he should end up with a winning record next year.

Actually, according to our web site Affee has broken ribs. I could have sworn Affee's player page said a fractured foot. Too strange. Either way, I want Affee healthy for next year, so Fish will start the final week in CF.
