Add me to the list of people who think this is ridiculous in its amazingness.

BYRON NELSON WINS BRITISH OPEN AFTER MARATHON PLAYOFF
It took 23 holes on Monday but Byron Nelson finally disposed of Australian Peter Thomson to win the 1946 British Open Championship. It was an amazing finish to the tournament for Nelson as a final round 66 on Sunday allowed him to make up 5 strokes on the leader and force the extra days action. Nelson and Thomson each shot an even par 72 during the 18 hole playoff. At that point the two golfers returned to the first tee for a sudden death playoff. Both Nelson and Thomson parred each of the first 4 holes, all par fours. On the par 5 5th, Nelson sank a 30 foot birdie putt while Thomson came up short in his birdie effort Here is a recap of what led up to the playoff. On Thursday it was all Ben Hogan as the American birdied 7 of the first 9 holes and ended the day with a 9 under 63. Skee Reigel and Roberto de Vicenzo were tied for second 4 strokes back. On Friday the winds picked up a little and the scores began to rise. However, Hogan was in an early group and got a strong round of 71 in before the weather started getting messy. After two days Hogan had a 3 stroke lead on HenryBradshaw who put together rounds of 69 and 68. Dai Reis, who finished in the top 5 at Augusta remains in the hunt with back to back 69's. Rees and Reigel are 4 strokes off the pace. de Vicenzo saw his game exploded on the front 9 and he limped home with a 77 to barely make the cut. Saturday, as is so often the case at the British Open, weather played a big role. Just 10 of the 31 golfers who made the cut managed to break par and the race tightened up as Hogan's lead slipped to one stroke on Australian Peter Thomson. Thomson shot a 69 and made up four strokes on Hogan. Rees and Jimmy Demaret where two strokes off the pace while Reigel and Little are 3 back heading into Sunday. Bradshaw fell out of contention with a 74. On Sunday Byron Nelson made a huge charge and finished with a 66 to give him a 4-round total of 278. However, his score of -10 did not appear to be good enough to win as Hogan and Thomson, on number 16 when Nelson parred the 18th were sitting at -12 and -11 respectively. Then the bottom fell out for Hogan as he double-bogeyed 16 and bogeyed 17 to fall one stroke behind Nelson. Thomson saved par on 16 but he too took a bogey on 17 and he entered the final hole tied with Nelson. Thomson had a chance to win it but his birdie putt lipped out setting the stage for Monday's playoff. Nelson also parred 18 to finish a stroke off the pace after leading each of the first 3 days.
The leaderboard Final Scores - St. Andrews (1946 British Open) B. Nelson -10* won playoff P. Thomson -10 B. Hogan -9 D. Ford -8 S. Snead -7 B. Hamilton -6 C. Harbert -6 C. Harper -6 R. Horne -6 A. Cerda -6 J. Burke Jr -6 BONHAM AND MELTON TO START IN ALL-STAR GAME AT WRIGLEY FIELD It comes as no surprise that Cliff Melton of the Pirates has been named the National League starting pitcher for Tuesday's allstar game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Melton took the loss in his only start last week but his record still stands at 16-3. The American League will counter with Tiny Bonham on the hill. The Yankees ace is 13-2 with a 2.31 era. Washington will be the best represented AL club as 6 Senators will be on the allstar squad. All but one American League team will be represented as the Chicago White Sox failed to have a player named to the team. The Chisox perhaps could have made a case for OF Danny Litwhiler (.263,9,32) but the outfielders that were selected over him have certainly put up better numbers. No one else on the last place pale hose belongs anywhere near Wrigley Field on Tuesday. Brooklyn and Cincinnati led the National League with 5 players each. The host Chicago Cubs will only be represented by pitcher Paul Erickson. The last place Boston Braves did not have anyone named to the team although perhaps slugging 1B Rudy York (.216,12,38) deserved inclusion over Brooklyn's Zeke Bonura. Here is the complete roster for the game: These players were selected for the AL OOTP-Allstar Team : P Tiny Bonham from New York 13-2, 2.31 P Joe Beggs from Washington 13-5, 2.60 P Tom Baker from St. Louis(A) 12-6, 2.34 P Steve Gromek from Cleveland 12-8, 2.58 P Bob Bowman from Boston (A) 10-4, 2.54 P Red Barrett from Washington 10-7, 2.96 P Stubby Overmire from Detroit 11-7, 3.73 P Steve Roser from New York 1-3, 3.31 P Jack Wilson from Philadelphia (A) 1-1, 4.32 4 sv P Ray Poat from Cleveland 1-1, 2.70 C Al Evans from Washington .298,3,28 C Bob Scheffing from New York .282,5,22 1B Babe Young from Boston (A) .296,10,54 2B Odell Hale from St. Louis(A) .253,5,38 3B Buddy Lewis from Washington .340,7,54 SS Skeeter Newsome from Philadelphia (A) .283,7,36 LF Ted Williams from Boston (A) .346,14,44 CF Phil Cavarretta from Washington .281,6,47 RF Roy Cullenbine from Philadelphia (A) .298,6,44 1B George Mcquinn from St. Louis(A) .272,7,40 LF Mel Mazzera from Washington .327,5,43 RF Tommy Henrich from Detroit .309,8,32 LF Jeff Heath from Cleveland .300,8,47 3B Oscar Grimes from Cleveland .303,13,40 3B Billy Johnson from New York .290,8,37 These players were selected for the NL OOTP-Allstar Team : P Cliff Melton from Pittsburgh 16-3, 2.44 P Mickey Haefner from Brooklyn 11-7, 2.42 P Ernie White from St. Louis 10-6, 2.96 P Paul Erickson from Chicago (N) 10-6, 3.27 P Bill Voiselle from New York(N) 10-7, 3.35 P Dave Koslo from New York(N) 9-8, 2.99 P Don Black from Brooklyn 8-5, 2.66 P Jake Mooty from Cincinnati 2-2, 3.90 P Frank Seward from New York(N) 1-2, 2.66 5 sv P Johnny Hetki from Cincinnati 3-2, 2.45 8 sv C Walker Cooper from St. Louis .305,5,29 C Bennie Warren from Philadelphia (N) .280,4,23 1B Stan Musial from St. Louis .282,8,39 2B Tony Cuccinello from Pittsburgh .301,9,44 3B Bob Elliott from Pittsburgh .265,3,38 SS Pee wee Reese from Brooklyn .281,4,39 LF Pete Reiser from Brooklyn .337,4,50 CF Bobby Estalella from New York(N) .331,3,38 RF Enos Slaughter from St. Louis .260,8,59 1B Zeke Bonura from Brooklyn .261,8,48 CF Ben Chapman from St. Louis .355,3,37 LF Joe Medwick from Cincinnati .319,6,27 RF Ford Garrison from Cincinnati .328,2,28 2B Alex Kampouris from Cincinnati .320,5,35 SS Arky Vaughan from Pittsburgh .333,2,31

WHERE HAVE YOU GONE, JOE DIMAGGIO
Cincinnati Reds fans have been wondering that ever since Dimaggio was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the New York Yankees in 1940. Jolt'in Joe spent 4 and half years in New York and appeared to be destined for stardom until he missed 6 weeks of the 1939 season with a serious stomach muscle tear. Dimaggio never fully recovered from that injury and, while he has been a solid player and a 3-time allstar for the Reds, his batting average has steadily declined. This season, at the age of 31, he is hitting just .201 with 9 homers at the break. He has shown flashes of brilliance, such as a pair of 3 homer games a couple of years back and he won the NL MVP award in 1944 but he has never lived up to the great expectations we had for him. His career in Cincinnati seems to have stalled his development although I am sure the injury is the main factor. Sounds a lot like Ken Griffey Jr huh? SENS AND PIRATES CLING TO LEAD AT THE BREAK As we hit the symbolic halfway point of the season both the National and American Leagues have whittled the potential contenders down to 5 teams. The Washington Senators won just 3 of 7 games last week and saw Boston move to within 2 games of top spot. The Red Sox cooled a little from their torrid pace of late June but still managed to win 4 of 7 games. Ted Williams took over the batting lead from Washington's Buddy Lewis. Williams, who was named AL player of the week hit .500 with 3 homers and 10 rbi's last week. Williams is also the league leader in homers with 14 but his 44 rbi's are still 10 back of Lewis and Williams' teammate Babe Young. Cleveland can pretty much kiss any chance of getting into the race good bye. The Indians lost ace Bill Lohrman (9-6, 2.80) for at least a month with a back injury. Lohrman won 21 games a year ago. On Tuesday, St. Louis(A)'s Tom Baker overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Chicago (A) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Baker (12-5) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 101 pitches. The hitting star for St. Louis(A) was third baseman Bob Dillinger, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. St. Louis(A) scored 6 runs on 11 hits. Two days later Browns rightfielder Bruce Campbell hit a milestone, getting his 2000th career hit. With no outs in the 6th inning, Bruce drilled a double, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 13 years of big league action so far, Bruce has compiled a batting average of .290, along with 266 homeruns and 1144 RBI. While the allstar game is forefront in most people's minds you can forgive Pittsburgh and Brooklyn players for looking beyond the game. The Pirates and Dodgers square off in a 4 game first place showdown starting Thursday in Pittsburgh. Following that series Brooklyn has a 2-game set with the third place Cardinals so it is an important week for the Dodgers, who went 5-2 against Chicago and Boston last week. Pete Reiser of the Dodgers was named National League player of the week after hitting .571 with 8 rbi's. Reiser received some more good news this week when he learned he made the first all-star team of his 7 year career. The Dodgers did get some bad news when they learned that 25 year old rookie pitcher Hank Behrman is gone for 6 weeks after hurting his back on July 4th against the Cubs. Behrman, who was 6-6 with a 5.19 era, has been replaced in the rotation by another rookie - 29 year old Joe Hatten. Hatten looked good in his debut as a starter. He went the distance pitching a 6-hitter in a 5-3 win over the Braves. Hatten, who has made 9 relief appearances has an era of 1.56. 1946 NFL PREVIEW - Part 1 of 4 With training camps opening over the next couple of weeks it is time to take a look ahead at the 1946 NFL season. Over the next 4 weeks we will give you everything you need to know to prepare for the season opener in September. Each week we will take a look at two divisions. This week we start with the North Division from both the AFC and NFC. Before we get started here is a brief look at the history of the league. (Editor's note: I began this league in 1941 to build up some game generated history so for our purposes it is deemed the league was formed that season. All real life NFL history will not be recognized in this sports world. Although the game will be mainly populated by fictional players certain real life players will show up. Each time they are mentioned there will be a * prior to their last name so you know they are real players I added to the game. Some of the real players will perform better than they did in real life and others will perform much poorer. Also, some real life college stars who did not play pro ball will nevertheless be included in this history.) Here are the year by year league champions: 1941 Detroit 20-14 over Tennessee 1942 Philadelphia 24-13 over New York Jets 1943 Carolina 27-13 over Oakland 1944 Cincinnati 19-13 over Arizona in overtime 1945 Baltimore 45-14 over Chicago Year by Year Offensive MVP 1941 Thomas Blades RB Atlanta 1942 Keith Musso RB Jacksonville 1943 Tony *Canadeo RB Green Bay 1944 Mario Glenn RB New England 1945 Johnny Cushing RB Oakland Year by Year Defensive MVP 1941Justin Sanders DT Jacksonville 1942 Charles Smith DE Philadelphia 1943 Julian Hughes DT Buffalo 1944 Lamar Jackson DT Carolina 1945 Julian Hughes DT Buffalo Year by Year Offensive ROY 1941 Harley Mitchell RB Philadelphia 1942 Terry Stephens QB New England 1943 Todd Berger RB New Orleans 1944 Tony Marsalis QB Arizona 1945 Antowain Anderson RB Atlanta Year by Year Defensive ROY 1941 Andre Bostic LB Detroit 1942 Ed Philcox DE Dallas 1943 Damon Stamer DE St Louis 1944 Ade Coulter DE Tennessee 1945 Ruben Taylor DE Minnesota Year by Year Coach of the Year 1941 Steve Jamieson San Francisco 1942 Bill McRae Tampa Bay 1943 Bill McRae Tampa Bay 1944 Tony Fenerty Carolina 1945 Bill Costa Minnesota AFC NORTH PREVIEW All 4 teams in this division finished at or above .500 a year ago. The defending league champion Baltimore Ravens have to once again be considered the favourite but Cincinnati and Cleveland could also contend for the division title. BALTIMORE RAVENS - The Ravens will go as far as their defense will take them. Ranked 2nd in the league a year ago mainly due to the play of DE J.D. Cumby and LB Miller Rentzel. 6th year QB John Foster was named the MVP of the title game and the ex-Oklahoma star could be ready for a breakout season. CINCINNATI BENGALS - CB Mac Wiley led the NFL with 13 interceptions a year ago and along with Johndale Rogers forms the best cornerback duo in the game. First round draft DT Speedy Garrity will add to an already strong defense. 4th year running back Bill *Dudley topped the 1000 yard rushing mark for the first time in his career. Wideouts Bob *Shaw and Bob Edwards combined for nearly 160 receptions. Veteran QB Bud Rutledge is a two-time first team allstar. CLEVELAND BROWNS - The run-n-gun Browns are all offense. However they have a big hole to fill as league receiving leader Bryan Givens has decided to retire after making 110 catches a year ago. Zach Kriczek had 99 receptions a year ago and will now be the go-to guy. Free agent Jack Abraham was brought in from Kansas City to try and replace Givens. Givens was joined on the conference first team allstar list by QB Bob Slaughter and FB Tony Ellis. Kriczek and tackle Jim Moulds made the second team. Upgrading the defense is a priority if the Browns are to be taken seriously and they used their first two picks to upgrade a porous secondary. PITTSBURGH STEELERS - It could be a long year for the Steelers. Not because they are that bad but rather because the rest of the division is so good. A pair of Notre Dame grads in RB Elmer *Angsman and WR Bud Neal were added thru the draft in an effort to improve the league's most anemic attack. QB Juqua Shirk had a terrible season and word is Tom Friede will take over under center. Friede spent all of last season holding the clipboard but he has started 10 games in his 5 year career. continued in next post

NFC NORTH PREVIEW
CHICAGO BEARS - The Bears finished 13-3 and were NFC champions a year ago before getting blow out in a lopsided championship game loss to Baltimore. Led by QB Sid *Luckman the best offense in the NFL placed 6 players on the first or second All-NFC team. In addition to Luckman, who had the league's best QB rating, WR Ken *Kavanaugh, TE Dedric Darby, tackle Joe *Strydahr, WR Matt Sikahema and guard George *Musso made the all-pro team. The defense, led by ex-Michigan lineman Bill *Hewitt, is solid. MINNESOTA VIKINGS - The Vikings finished the regular season tied with Chicago at 13-3 but were upset at home by Carolina in the divisional playoff game. Minnesota relies on workhorse rookie running back Gene Szott, who rushed for 1513 yards a year ago. The defense is among the best in the conference and was led by defensive rookie of the year Ruben Taylor and veteran linebacker Manch Jackson. The Vikings traded out of the first round but used a high second round pick on QB Jim Elliott from South Carolina. Elliott will probably need a year or two to grow into the job but he could end up being the steal of the draft. GREEN BAY PACKERS - The Packers are a balanced club but just don't have the talent to compete with the Bears and Vikings. RB Tony *Canadeo, a former league MVP, rushed for 1687 yards and WR Don *Hutson made 92 catches. QB Ceicl *Isbell is steady but not a franchise QB. The Packers drafted Stanford QB Jordan Montana (perhaps a relative of you know who) in the third round and he looked good in mini-camp but for now the job belongs to Isbell. Linebacker Bulldog *Turner is the best of an average defense. DETROIT LIONS - Some things never change. The Lions were 3-13 in 1945 and ranked dead last in defense and 31st in offense. However, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. . QB Bob *Waterfield was selected 4th overall a year ago and he looked good in 8 starts as a rookie. To protect their franchise QB the Lions used the first overall pick on tackle Lou *Groza. The future appears bright for Detroit. . Unfortunately the future is definately not now. CAMPBELL REPLACES DUTTON AS NHL PRESIDENT Clarence Campbell was named president of the National Hockey League just a few months after he had been hired as outgoing boss Mervyn "Red" Dutton's assistant. Dutton announced his resignation at the league's summer meeting in Montreal last week and Campbell was a unanimous choice to take over. Born in Fleming, Saskatchewan in 1905, Campbell was an outstanding student and avid sportsman in his youth. In 1924 he graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in law and arts and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in the United Kingdom. During this period he studied refereeing and worked several hockey and lacrosse matches in Europe. He returned to Canada after six years at Oxford when the country was in the throngs of the Great Depression. He took a low paying job with an Edmonton law firm and officiated for the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA). Clarence Campbell's proficiency as a referee attracted NHL officials and he was hired by NHL president Frank Calder at the start of the 1936 season. He quickly established himself as one of the better referees in the league. By the spring of 1937, he was assigned to the Stanley Cup semifinals between the Red Wings and Canadiens. He was the referee the night Howie Morenz's career came to an end as a result of a broken leg on January 28, 1937. Campbell enlisted as a private in the Canadian Army in 1940 but quickly rose through the ranks until he ended up commanding the 4th Armored Division. In 1945 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In the aftermath of the war he was appointed the prosecution lawyer for the Canadian War Crimes Commission at the Nuremberg trial of Nazi Kurt Meyer, convicted of executing innocent Canadian prisoners-of-war. Campbell was awarded the Order of the British Empire and made King's Counsel. CELTICS AND KNICKERBOCKERS FORMED - BAA OFFICIALLY HAS FOUR MEMBERS The newly formed Basketball Association of America has now officially grown to four teams. Last week the league unvieled plans to have as many as 13 teams ready to play by November. Two teams, the Philadelphia Warriors and Washington Capitols, officially committed and even signed a few players and, in Washington's case a coach as high school coach Red Aurebach inked a deal with the Caps. This week two more teams officially announced their membership and nicknames. The Boston club will be known as the Celtics while Madison Square Garden officially announced it's team would be known as the Knickerbockers. The Celtics nickname choice was designed to garner immediate interest from city's large Irish population. The Knickerbockers name traces it's origin back to the Dutch settlers who came to the New World - and in particular to what is now called New York - in the 1600's. It specifically refers to the style of pants the settlers wore, pants that rolled up just below the knee, which became known as "knickerbockers". "The name came out of a hat," explained Garden Executive Fred Podesta. "We were all sitting in the office one day -- Irish, (public relations director) Lester Scott and a few others on the staff. We each put a name in the hat, and when we pulled them out, most of them said Knickerbockers, after Father Knickerbocker, the symbol of New York City." Several other teams are expected to officially join the league next week. In all, 13 cities made a $1,000 deposit for a franchise at the league meeting 2 weeks ago. The standings page:

This is great stuff. I am hoping to see good things from my Cleveland Browns this year.

7 RUN 8TH GIVES AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL STAR BRAGGING RIGHTS
the bottom of the 8th inning helped the American League overcome a 6-5 deficiet and turn the All-Star game into a laugher. Billy Johnson of the Yankees hit a bases loaded triple and Washington's Phil Cavarretta delivered a 2-run homer to key a 7 run outburst in the bottom of the 8th inning as the American Leaguers won 12-6. It was the third victory in the last 4 years for the Junior Circuit. Browns starter Tom Baker earned the victory while Mickey Haefner of the Dodgers was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning. The NL jumped out to an early when leadoff man Arky Vaughan of the Pirates worked AL starter Tiny Bonham for a walk. The Cards Stan Musial singled and 2 batters later Tony Cuccinello of Pittsburgh hit a 3-run homer off of the New York Yankee ace. The AL got one run back when Yankee catcher Bob Scheffing drew a one out walk from Giants starter Cliff Melton and moved to third on a double from Ted Williams of the Red Sox. Scheffing scored on a sacfly from Oscar Grimes of the Indians. Veteran Cardinals outfielder Ben Chapman made it 4-1 Nationals in the second when he hit a 2-out rbi single but in the home half the American Leaguers took the lead after a 4-run outburst. A 2-run double off the bat of the A's Roy Cullenbine was the big blow. Bonham and Melton finally settled down in the third and each retired the side in order. Washington pitcher Red Barrett was lit up for 2 runs in his only inning of work. Enos Slaughter of St Louis and Cuccinello drove in runs in the 5th to make it 6-5 Nationals. It stayed 6-5 until the American League bats exploded in the 8th. Ted Williams led off with a single off Haefner. Buddy Lewis of the Sens fanned but then Tommy Henrich of Detroit singled and Cleveland's Jeff Heath drew a walk to load the bases. Cincinnati reliever Johnny Hetki took over on the hill but he was greeted by pinch-hitter Billy Johnson who ripped a triple into the rightfield corner. Skeeter Newsome of the A's followed with a single to plate Johnson to make it 9-6. The National's went to their third pitcher of the inning but Ernie White of the Cardinals had no more success than the previous two. White faced pinch-hitter Cavarretta, and the Senators outfielder greeted him with a 2 run. Singles from Babe Young of the Red Sox and Al Evans of Washington brought Ted Williams to the plate again. Williams drove in a run with his second single of the inning. Bill Voiselle of the Giants became the 4th pitcher of the inning for the NL and he struck out Buddy Lewis, who fanned for the second time in the inning, and then got Henrich to ground out to finally put an end to things. Washington's Joe Beggs came on to pitch the 9th inning for the AL and, despite a double from Alex Kampouris of Cincinnati and a single from his Reds teammate Ford Garrison, held the Nationals scoreless in the 9th. Ted Williams of Boston, who went 3-for-5 with an rbi and a run scored was named the game's MVP. PIRATES TAKE 3 of 4 FROM DODGERS - LEAD IS NOW 4.5 GAMES In a key showdown between the National League's top two clubs it was the the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates who came out on top. The Pirates won 3 of 4 games against the Dodgers to pad their lead. The opener on Thursday was a matchup of all-star pitchers but it became a rout quickly as the Bucs scored 6 runs off of Mickey Haefner (11-8, 2.76) in the first inning and cruised to an 11-2 win behind a complete game 8-hitter from Cliff Melton (17-3, 2.42). Bob Elliott had 4 hits to lead the attack and rookie outfielder Ralph Kiner hit his second career homer, and his first since May 18th. Kiner did not wait long for his third homer as he hit it the next night to help Pittsburgh to a 9-5 victory. Kiner, Arky Vaughan and Dick Siebert each had 3 hits for the winners. Saturday's affair was a wild game. Pittsburgh scored 3 times in the bottom of the 8th to take a 7-6 lead only to have Brooklyn plate 5 in the top of the 9th. The Bucs answered with 4 of their own in the home half to tie the game and then won it on a Frankie Gustine single in the bottom of the 10th after Bill Elliott had doubled to lead off the inning. Brooklyn avoided the embarassment of a sweep with a 9-3 win yesterday. The third place Cardinals took 3 of 4 from Chicago to remain in third place, 6 games back. The 4th place Reds swept four games from Philadelphia and now are 7.5 games off the pace. Joe Medwick of the Reds was named NL player of the week after hitting .563 (9-for-16) with 6 rbi's in the 4 games. Medwick is riding an 11-game hitting streak. RED SOX INCH CLOSER TO FIRST PLACE SENATORS The Boston Red Sox have moved to within 1 game of first place Washington in the American League. The Red Sox split a 4-game set with the hapless White Sox in Fenway while the Senators were dropping 3 of 4 to the Browns at Sportsman's Park in St Louis. Johnny Pesky had a big series for the Red Sox and he was rewarded with the American Player of the Week Award. The 26 year old infielder hit .438 with a homer and 3 rbi's. A 5-game series in New York against the Yankees is whats ahead for Boston while the Senators have one more against the Browns before returning home for a 4-game set with Chicago. After that Boston and Washington go head-to-head in the nation's capital for a 3-game set beginning next Sunday. WEILAND JOINS 300 WIN CLUB Bob Weiland of the Detroit Tigers became the 18th member of the 300-victory club when he was credited with the victory in Saturday's game against Cleveland. Weiland pitched just 1/3 of an inning in relief but was given the win after a Tiger rally. The 40 year old has five 20-win seasons to his credit and pitched a no-hitter in 1935. He is 5-2 this season working mainly out of the bullpen. Weiland began his career with the White Sox in 1929 but was dealt to the Athletics in July of his rookie year. Weiland* 300 NFL 1946 SEASON PREVIEW - Part 2 Last week TSN previewed the North Divisions of both the NFC and AFC. This week we turn our attention to the East. AFC EAST PREVIEW BUFFALO BILLS -The Bills were the only AFC East club to finish above .500. The Bills won their first playoff game in franchise history before losing to eventual league champion Baltimore in the AFC title game. Running back Michael Williams is the key to the Buffalo offense. The two-time AFC 2nd team allstar rushed for 1706 yards a year ago and has topped the 1000 yard mark each of his four seasons in the league. Defensive lineman Julian Hughes leads the defense, which was suspect at times last year. Hughes was Defensive MVP last year for the second time in his career. To be a serious contender the Bills need to upgrade at the QB position and in the defensive backfield. The first round pick was used on safety Stephen Whitehead from North Carolina State who should help the defense. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS - The 7-9 Pats rely on a punishing running game with Mario Glenn (1618 yards) following bruising blockers Andre Ellis and Derrick Elling. With the selection of tackle Dewitt Coulter out of Army this season the Pats offensive line will be even stronger. A healthy Bob Irwin could make a big difference this year. The Pats signal caller missed half the season year ago with various injuries. MIAMI DOLPHINS - Dolphins fans had to put up with a second straight losing season from the 6-10 Dolphins. Defense was the weak spot but surprisingly the Dolphins focused on the offensive side of the ball in the draft. Most experts felt WR Hugh Vick out of Michigan was a real reach at 7th overall. The Dolphins brass feels Vick would be a perfect compliment to second year QB Woody Brooks. Brooks, the ex-UCLA star, started every game of his rookie season and he did improve as the year wore on. Running Back Stacey Jolley had another 1000 yard rushing season, making it 3 in a row for the 7th round pick out of Louisville in 1943. Ryan Burns is one of the best tight ends in the league. Lots of talent on offense. Unfortunately for the Dolphins there is little talent on the other side of the ball. NEW YORK JETS - If you could combine the Jets defense and the Dolphins offense you would have a great team. New York, aside from 3rd year RB Steve *Van Buren, has little talent on offense. The o-line in particular is among the worst in the league. Third year QB Keith Reeves could eventually be a star - if he lives long enough. Reeves was sacked 75 times over his first two seasons with the Jets. There is a lot of talent on defense and if the offense can put things together the Jets could be a force, but with the offensive line they have it is highly unlikely. continued

NFC EAST DIVISION PREVIEW PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - The Eagles have made the playoffs four of the last five seasons and won the East title a year ago with a 9-7 record. The defense is outstanding led by linebacker Ed LeBlanc and CB's Rob Meester and Marion Dulaney. The offense sputtered a little last year especially when RB Harley Mitchell was injured. A healthy season from the 1941 offensive rookie of the year is a must if the Eagles are to do much this year. QB Doug Bass also was injured for much of last season but ex-Oklahoma star Ken Neal filled in admirably. Big Clemson tackle Gary Bishop was the Eagles first round pick and will strengthen the offensive line. WASHINGTON REDSKINS - Coach Scooter Hayes led the Redskins to their first playoff berth in 1944 but then he bolted to Carolina. Charley Woodson was the coach last year and a 4-12 season cost him his job and he was replaced by Tony Kopay who gets his first chance to be the head man. The 'Skins have some talent at the skill positions on offense, such as 10th year QB Sammy *Baugh, running back Bob *Seymour and wide receiver Wayne *Miller. Add in second overall pick Dante *Lavelli, a gifted wide receiver from Ohio State and this team looks far better than it performed a year ago. The defense is acceptable and if everyone stays healthy the Redskins could be back in the playoffs. TSN is picking Washington as our surprise team of the year. NEW YORK GIANTS - The Giants have never played a postseason game and you can expect that trend to continue unless the Eagles run into major injury trouble. On offense New York has a lot of average players but no great ones. Three different QB's spent time under center a year ago and there was no clear marquee running back. The defense has a couple of Pro-Bowl quality players but there are some weaknesses as well particularily at linebacker. The Giants had a weird draft dealing their top 4 picks to the Jets to move up to number 3 overall where they selected center Vincent Uwaezouke from Michigan State. DALLAS COWBOYS - The 6-10 Cowboys need help on both sides of the ball. They upgraded their offense with the selection of Tennessee RB Raymond Cash with the 6th pick of the draft. It has become clear that Doug Schroeder is not the man to guide the Cowboys offense. The 5th year pro from Auburn finally saw his first game action a year ago and he should terrible judgement averaging over 2 interceptions a game. Unless Cash can have an immediate impact it will be another long season in Dallas. Next week we continue the NFL preview with a look at the South Division of each conference. LEAGUE BACKGROUND - NCAA FOOTBALL The college football landscape is much different in 1946 from today. Independant clubs play a much bigger role and the service academy's, in particular Army, are powerhouses. Many of the traditions are intact however, such as the Rose Bowl. It will feature the winner of what will become known as the PAC 10 and Big 10 conferences only those two groups go by different names in 1946. Here is the complete conference run-down. CHICAGO, TORONTO AND DETROIT ARE IN AS BAA NOW HAS SEVEN TEAMS COMMITTED Three more franchises have officially confirmed they will be joining the new pro basketball league called the Basketball Association of America. At a joint announcement this week it was announced that Chicago, Detroit and Toronto will join the league and all 3 teams will play out of the arenas owned by each cities National Hockey League team. With Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington already committed this brings the league to 7 teams. Up to 6 more cities are expected to have announcements in the next week or two. However, one city that has decided to back out at least for this year is Indianapolis. The ownership group apparently ran into difficulty securing an arena lease. The Toronto team will be known as the Huskies, while the Chicago club will be called the Stags. The Detroit entry will be named after the hockey Red Wings former name and will be known as the Falcons. Editors Note - None of these clubs are the forerunners of the current NBA teams in each city. The Falcons and Huskies will drop out of the league after just one season while the Stags will call it quits in 1950. The Fort Wayne Pistons will join the league with 3 other clubs from the National Basketball League in 1948 while the expansion Chicago Bulls will enter the league in 1966. The NBA does not return to Toronto until 1995. STATS AND STANDINGS MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Great to see boxing in the mix. I will be looking forward to who wins these bouts. They just showed Zale/Graziano III on ESPN Classic last week.

RED SOX BEAT SENATORS TO TAKE OVER TOP SPOT
Babe Young had 4 hits including a homerun and drove in 4 runs to lead Boston to a 14-4 pasting of the Senators in the opener of their 3 game series. The win moves the Red Sox a half game ahead of Washington and puts them atop the American League standings. In addition to Young, Stan Spence and rookie catcher Roy Partee also homered for the Red Sox who chased Washington ace Joe Beggs (14-7) in the 6th. Ted Williams had 2 hits to raise his league leading average to .351. Bob Bowman pitched 7 innings for the Red Sox and improved his record to 12-5. It was a bad week for the Senators who on Thursday lost starting pitcher Red Barrett for at least a month with a back injury. Barrett was 10-8 with a 2.95 era in 21 starts. Milo Candini (2-2, 3.80) was moved in to the rotation to replace Barrett. On the other hand it was a very good week for the Red Sox who won 5 of 6 games including taking 3 of 4 from the Yankees which helped drop New York into 4th place, 6.5 games back. The Yankees won just 2 games last week but both of them were won with Tiny Bonham on the mound. Bonham was named the American League player of the week and improved his record to 16-2 with a 2.24 era. In the National League the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to lead the way with the Dodgers, Reds and Cardinals all trying to keep pace. Joe Hatten of the 6th place Phillies was named player of the week in the senior circuit after pitching a pair of complete game victories over the Cards and Giants. Hatten, who was acquired from Brooklyn 2 weeks ago, is 3-1 in 4 starts since being dealt to the Phillies. The rookie had been used exclusively in relief by the Dodgers. 2nd year pro Dick Mauney went the other way in the deal and he has not looked bad in the Dodgers rotation either. ARMY TOPS THE PRESEASON COLLEGE POLL All eyes are squarely focused on November 9th when Army and Notre Dame meet in Brooklyn. Most experts feel that will be the game that decides the National College Football Championship for 1946. Army, which finished 1st in the polls each of the last two seasons begins 1946 as the preseason number 1. The Irish, who were ranked 1st in 1942 are number two to open the season. The Cadets are led by a couple of Heisman candidates in running backs Doc Blanchard and Glen Davis. Army also features a solid QB in Arnold Tuck and a great line anchored by Tex Coulter, John Green and Albert Nemetz. All of the above are expected to go high in the NFL draft. Notre Dame relies on junior QB Johnny Lujack and a punishing defense. Other Heisman candidates beside Blanchard, Davis and Lujack include St Mary's HB Herman Wedemeyer, Northwestern QB Otto Graham, Michigan RB Bob Chappas, Georgia QB Charles Trippi and QB Les Horvath of Ohio State. Here is the Preseason Top 20 (1945 finish in brackets) 1- Army (1) 2- Notre Dame (9) 3. Georgia (18) 4. Pennsylvania (8) 5. Southern California (11) 6. Michigan (6) 7. Tennessee (14) 8. Louisiana State (15) 9. Texas (10) 10. Illimois (nr) 11. Georgia Tech (nr) 12. Yale (nr) 13. UCLA (nr) 14. Ohio State (12) 15. Oklahoma State (5) 16. Alabama (2) 17. Tulsa (17) 18. N. C. State (nr) 19. Navy (3) 20. Indiana (4) NFL 1946 SEASON PREVIEW - Part 3 We turn our attention to the south this week as we present the third in our 4 part NFL preview. NFC SOUTH DIVISION The South Division features four very good teams and all have a stud running back who should easily top the 1000 yard mark. However, defense is no where near the level of the offense for each of these four teams. CAROLINA PANTHERS - The always strong Panthers have slipped a little since their NFL Championship season of 1943 but they are still a team to be feared. Ex-University of Kentucky star Keith Meade leads the offense. Meade rushed for a career high 1678 yards last year, his third in the NFL. Javon Jamieson is a steady QB and 1943 championship game MVP Johnny Lisch is entering his prime as a receiver. The defense is solid and should be made better with the addition of first round pick DE Paul Molden from San Jose State and second round CB Joe Fuqua from Boise State. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - The Saints have made the playoffs two of the last 4 years but with the talent they have they should be a much better club. RB Todd Berger led the NFL in rushing with 2147 yards. He and wideout Bob Sommer are the keys to the New Orleans offense which is among the best in the league. Dick Boylan was barely adequate at QB last year so the Saints signed Ryan Boyette from Philadelphia in the off-season. Not sure if Boyette is the answer as he has started just 8 games in his 7 year career. On defense, all the starters are back including MLB Bill Howard, who led the team with 152 tackles and Pro Bowl free safety Jeff Klein who had 7 interceptions. ATLANTA FALCONS - Coach Hank Williams is back for a second season after leading the Falcons to the playoffs a year ago. The offense is among the best in the league thanks to a strong line and second team all-Pro QB Arnie *Herber. Herber has started every game for the Falcons since being drafted 12th overall prior to the 1944 season. His numbers showed great improvement last year from his rookie campaign and Williams is expecting even more improvement this year. Offensive rookie of the year Antowain Anderson certainly made life easier for Herber. Anderson rushed for 1628 yards and made the second all-star team. WR Duane Whelihan was named to the first allstar team for the first time in his 5 year career. After having great draft success with offense players taken in the first round the Falcons decided to focus on defense this time. DT Dennis Pochman from Virginia is a terrific run stopper and should clog up the middle for an Atlanta defense that ranked in the bottom half of the league a year ago. The Falcons are still a player or two shy on the defensive side of the ball but this is a team to watch out for in the future. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS - Another team with a very good offense, the only thing keeping the Bucs from the playoffs the last two years is the high level of competition within their division. Tampa will again have their work cut out to avoiding finishing last this strong group of teams. With the retirement of Gail Nagurski the QB job is wide open. Last year's backup Steve Quayle has the inside track but early word out of Bucs camp is that undrafted QB Paul Christman from Missouri looks very good. Second round pick Sammy Herron rushed for 1000 yards as a rookie but the Bucs felt Notre Dame's Darren McLeod was too good to pass up at number 11 so they made the RB their first round pick. The offensive line is very good so running the ball should not be a problem. Stopping the run, on the other hand, may be difficult. And in this division that will be a big problem.

Volume 1, Issue 4 continued
AFC SOUTH DIVISION PREVIEW Almost the opposite of the NFC South. Again four solid teams but each of them is better known for it's defense than what they do with the ball. TENNESSEE TITANS - One of the best defenses in the league got even better with the addition of free agent CB Jake Spikes. The former Middle Tennessee star left the Redskins to return home to Tennessee. Offensively, the Titans are just average. QB Manfred Gayle made the second allstar team and the Titans added guard John F *Green from Army to strengthen their line. Special teams is outstanding as both kicker Bob Nobis and punter Jason Williams made the all-pro team. The Titans made the playoffs last season after a 3 year absence but bowed out to Buffalo in the first round. HOUSTON TEXANS - The Texans, with the best offense but worst defense in the division, made the playoffs for the second time in 3 years but once again failed to win a postseason game. Veteran QB Vaughn Diedrick is entering his 14th season and has started every game since 1941. However, there is concern his skills are declining after his worst season as a pro. The Texans have 3 very good running backs who all see a fair share of playing time. WR Mel Ours has made the allstar team 4 years in a row. To upgrade the defense the Texans added Tony Brady from Pitt with their first round draft pick. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS - Reggie Elstrom takes over as Head Coach for the Colts who have just one playoff game to their credit. Elstrom hardly brings a reputation for success as he was 6-10 with Atlanta two years ago and was fired after a 6-10 year in Denver last season. RB Stephen Williams was drafted in the first round out of UCLA in order to improve the offense which ranked near the bottom of the league a year ago. The defense is solid. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - Kim Searcy has been the Jags coach since the league started in 1941 but after following up two 8-8 seasons with a 5-11 campaign a year ago he is clearly on the hot seat. Keith Musso is one of the best running backs in the league but he is the Jags offense. QB Justin Jackson is in his 7th year but still makes rookie mistakes. Wide reciever Lewis Smith is talented but inconsistant and the offensive line is average at best. The defense looks good on paper but had a poor season although injuries did play a role. Next week in the final installment of the NFL preview we look at the West Divisions of each conference. STATS AND STANDINGS
