I love OOTP a lot, but after reading all of these reviews I'm more and more content to stick with V5, at least for a few more months....

A link to a list od some of the more notable Rule 5 draftees. I'm thinking that since this draft is more than 100 years old that there are some that MLB may have missed since their list looks to just be over the last 15 years. |

My biggest dissappointment is in fielding ratings. I was really hoping V6 would incorporate some kind of growth/regression of fielding %. I hate using Lahman when a guy who normally is a gold glove prospect, enters the game from a cup of coffee Sept call up and made one or two errors in two games and is now branded for life with a .930 fld %. I freely admit to using the edit feature to change fielding % of certain players in the game. Always have and it appears in the future I still will.
On the positive side, I like the IF arm feature as well as the new ratings scale for arm scores. But please, let's have some kind of career progression on fielding %.

I think the Rule V draft will improve as the 40 man roster bugs are addressed. Once all the rules are working, like traded players NOT going to the minors, the 40 man roster should become more difficult to manage and as a restult a few better prospects will appear in the rule 5 draft.

If you'll check your player development you'll see that fielding % "as a rating" changes, it has for awhile now.

True, but from what I've seen it's a minute change. e.g. .978 to .976.

My "guess" though is if the changes were larger we'd hear complaining to beat the band. Can't please 'em all.

From what I've seen the game's additions are great. I loved 5, but the subtle changes yet very significant Rule 5 and Waiver rules are great. These are key tools for real life GM's.
%-wise, how many people are still stuck with significant errors so that they can't play the game (I'm one). I'm willing to spend time trying to fix it or wait out the patches, but I'm frustrated to hear that others are playing and enjoying this game (envious?). Markus, congratulations! |

I think the bottom line is that for me, and probably the majority of people on this board, OOTP6 is worth upgrading to, because we are very particular about the game and any improvements are good improvements.
When I see people saying that aren't going to upgrade on the result of my post, I hope they take that into account. If I had the option I of giving the game back and getting a refund, I definitely would not take it. But, I think if you took a casual player of OOTP5, gave them OOTP6, they would come back and say 'why did I pay another $35 for this?' The engine improvements won't be noticed by them, or appreciated enough to justify the price. I'll play OOTP6 to death, no doubt, but thats because I'm such a hardcore fan of this kind of game, but I don't think the improvements will sell anyone who wasn't also a big fan of the game or the genre. I'm someone who would pay $100 for the perfect baseball sim, but I'm not a typical example. |

I like the new engine a lot.
I hate the new PbP interface a lot more.

I just see it as a building block. Now that the "engine" is set, Markus can start adding and fixing things.

I think it will take simming a lot of seasons to see how the new engine has affected things. For myself, I really appreciate the new roster complexity. Trading is becoming more interesting and complicated too, with the addition of cash into the equation. On the other hand, I think trading might now step to the front as the #1 area deserving scrutiny & improvement.

I am hoping OOTP7 is devoted to removing the foul ball loop.... That in itself will make it a great value!!!! Everytime I see a foul ball on the pbp I curse and wonder just how many clicks I am gonna have to make this time.....

i read the review somewhat quickly but will go over it again. my first impression is that it is a great review and markus should read it over carefully. i am not saying that everything is automatically correct but it seems to be a well thought out review.
it seems that everything mentioned is correctable but may take an edition or two to do it. the one thing that has struck me and i think it has effected ootp6 was the needless(in my opinion) time wasted on the development of "inside the park". when a game is perfect or at least close that is the time to expand into other games and while i like ootp6 very much it has a ways to go before it approaches perfection. the strength of ootp has been its dedication toward perfecting one game and the sidetrack caused by "itp" probably caused at least a hiccup in achieving that goal. i agree that another really good baseball sim would serve to drive the development of ootp but i sure don't see it in the other 2 games (puresim and baseball mogul) so i think that drive is going to have to be supplied by people writing well thought out reviews because i don't feel that markus has ever been guilty of not listening. |

I don't think we should be questioning Markus' or anyone else's drive here. First off, I think that OOTP is far ahead of all the other baseball sims. As has been stated earlier, Markus could sit and let them catch up, but he hasn't. He sat down and rewrote the whole engine for the game and it's statistics. This is not a minor step, it is a major endeavor, especially for someone who programs alone. I'm not sure that people realize how big a change this really is. And, I agree with Markus, this is well worth it. DIPS is better than the previous method. For one, it actually makes defense important. OOTP isn't perfect, but no game is.
Look at what people are complaining about. Trading in the success cycle? Do you realize how realistic a game has to get before this is even thought of? And, not every team follows this (Pittsburgh, Montreal, White Sox, Mets come to mind). I think a more realistic goal would be to have GM's with differing personalities like defense, OBP, BA, pitching. And, have the teams fire and hire different styles throughout careers. But, as with DIPS, I think this is a huge step and probably not something that could be done with one update. Although I'd love for Markus to prove me wrong. As for crashes, it runs perfectly on my system, sorry. And, I don't use pbp, I just sim all my games. Finally, the only problem I've had with the trade window is the ratings (how they don't adjust to the ratings used) and the salary. I'm pretty sure these will be addressed. This is just my opinion and I think that all yours are good too. Just wanted to throw in my bit. |

I forgot to add my Rule 5 thoughts. First off, notice how many of them are returned. Also, any list that has a 3 of the top 4 being Vina, Alfonseca, and Mantei is not a good list. I think it's pretty realistic and the only thing that would make it more so would be to trade to keep Rule 5 picks.
