GDBA and MLB Century are usually regarded as the two longest. GDBA just finished its 27th season, I think MLB Century is starting up on its 31st season if I counted right (In real time, they both started at about the same time). Boys of Summer just finished its 20th season (should have thrown a party) and has been active since October of 2001 (and still has half of the original owners).
I agree with Karen and the others in that its hard to be subjective since everyone has something different they want out of a league. Some like lots of trading, others a lot of trash talking, and still others appreciate the laid back approach.

No, I won't lock it because it is on topic and a fine debate. The reason I posted was to ensure the people who did post in favor of this idea understand that it simply isn't going to happen. Even if you do attempt to make a list of all the longest running leagues, even then you won’t have all the best ones. And since a lot of people have felt the need to use this thread as a springboard for advertising a league then I will too, my best example is the WBL (in my sig). It is only in season 3 but from all my experience there isn't a better league.
Jestre made a very valid point, the most 'popular' ones cannot be judged by the people who simply post the most in favor of their league, but it always ends up that way. I can't even agree with some of the things people have used to judge a good league right away. I myself am a stickler for a nice website, but I know a nice or bad site doesn't make a good or bad league, it is just a preference. Even saying the commish has to be a nice guy and answer every IM isn't a good way to judge. Although I admit a nice and responsive commish is a huge plus, as long as he does his job I don't care if he is chatty with people who aren't in his league or not. A thing like this is based way too much on opinion for it to actually happen. So count this as post #4 to try and reinforce the fact, the best league is in the eye of the beholder. |

Always have to chime in on this one, but alot of the same leagues popup here year after year. I would say participation is a key, and overall owner retention. I believe the ATHL (link in my signature) is one of the best. Biased opinion of course.

With apologies to AOBL, SMLB is the best league I’m in. I probably enjoyed the re-draft of SMLB the most but winning the World Series helped a lot there.

yes, yes, this thread is one big advertisment, lol, which is all it will be. So enjoy it and rest assured, this is as close to a "best league" vote you will ever get because it can't happen. Sorry if that bothers anyone, but reality sets in before delusions.

On topic, I think the OTBL is pretty damn cool. From my impression, if one were to crown a "best" league, the Maelstrom is probably the way to go.. |

I looked at Maelstrom a while ago, and although it is very cool in a lot of ways, and very well run, I think there's way too many incentives for articles/lineup submission etc... I think thats my main beef with a lot of leagues. If its a good league, then owners should participate willingly, and not need any incentives.
As for the topic at hand, for me personally, the best league is one with a great commish who can do all of his duties plus some, and great owners who participate willingly and frequently. Thats really all you need. My favourite league has been going for over 3 real years, currently in our 8th year sim-time(not including lost years). An amazing thing is how even after the data of the first 2 seasons were lost, the owners still kept together and kept the league. |
