They as in the Padres or they as in the outfielders?

I will say it now, Padres will win the west in 2004.

the OF's. Quantity does not equal quality. And any article where I need to mention Terrence Long just has bad idea written all over it.

If their young pitchers step up, they have a very good chance. The Dodgers are backstepping and the Rockies are...well, the Rockies. That leaves the Giants and D'Backs. The Giants have Barry Bonds which makes them an instant contender while the D'Backs are probably too old.

also consider the D-backs lost two of their best pitchers.

Yup. Sexson will certainly help the offense, but who will fill out the rotation behind Johnson?

Ya, not like they have any young pitchers to throw. No one who should have won rookie of the year or anything. All four spots are up for grabs.

ROFL

Yeah, Webb is certain to be in the rotation as is Dessens because they traded Erubiel Durazo to get him. After that is anyone's guess.

is that JAY Payton you called a .300 hitter with 20 HR? Even if healthy, this sounds like a Met fan comment (when he was still on the team anyway)

Giles is also a step above both Klesko and Nevin.

Overall, the lineup looks mediocre-slightly above average and the pitching looks average at best. I'm sticking with SF.

Edit: On second notice, Payton's splits aren't as bad as envisioned. Still, if he doesn't suffer a huge dropoff, i'll be stunned.

I suspect the Padres will rank among the league leaders in runs scored this year barring serious injuries or slippage. The rotation is where I have doubts. Lawrence and Eaton need to rebound (an ERA over 4.00 is not very good considering the context of Qualcomm), Peavey needs to take a step forward, and Wells needs to still have some gas in the tank. If Oliver Perez would come around that would be a bonus, but the critical area for the Padres is those players stepping it up.

Well not a Mets fan, more like an optimistic Padres fan, but looking at his stats, Payton is a career .291 hitter. I just read a quick note today saying he had some early injury problems. So we shall see this year. As for mediocre-slighty above average, take a look at the Gnats lineup.

SP-Jason Schmidt-Top Notch SP, no doubt about it
SP-Kirk Rueter -Good innings eater, but thats it.
SP-Brett Tomko-'Nuff said
SP-Jerome Williams-Quality guy last year, but we havent seen enough.
SP-Dustin Hermanson-'Nuff said again....

Lineup-
1-Ray Durham-Good 2b
2-Edgardo Alfonzo-3b- Looking to turn it around, still good though
3-Michael Tucker -Not excatly striking fear into the pitcher
4-Barry Bonds-No need to write anything here
5-A.J. Pierzynski-Good C as long as he repeats his #'s from last year
6-Marquis Grissom-35-year-old on the down
7-Neifi Pérez-Not excatly Rich Aurilla
8-JT Snow-Good D, No Offense

Pretty hard to overestimate the impact of Barry Bonds though. Unless he has seven Rey Ordonez's surrounding him, any lineup with Bonds is going to score runs.

If he does it will be for PITT since that was where he was traded too last year for Brian Giles.

No I can't excatly explain how they will be better, but on paper they look like a better team then the Giants. A new team basically, a new stadium, a great lineup and a solid staff with money to spend if need be, then i can see them winning the west.

Like mentioned before, everybody in the West has been downgrading while the Padres were upgrading[not really much to downgrade though from last year]

If they look better on paper though, shouldn't you have an explanation for why you think they do?

new team? semi-check.
New stadium? check
Great lineup? this is what i'm looking for evidence of.
Solid staff? Well... again, evidence would be nice.

I'll acknowledge they have a chance at contending, but a LOT would have to go right for them to have a real shot at the playoffs.
