fat d00d, all that matters when evaluating a pitcher's performance is his W-L record. Duh.

I'm just saying that he's won less than 1/4 of his games against the Yankees. Nothing more, nothing less. As I said, his track record isn't that great.

Judging him in a vaccum like that isn't particularly useful. How do other pitchers fair against the Yanks? What is his ERA? How do his DIPS numbers look? How has the pen faired in his outings? How much run support has he received?

For whatever reason, he doesn't have as much success against the Yankees. If you want to try to say that 4 wins in 18 starts is successful, then I guess I would disagree. Part of winning games is staying in long enough to be decisive. He hasn't done this in the last few years against them. If you look at those games start by start, you'll see that, generally speaking, whoever he is facing turns it up a notch against him. I don't expect any different in this series.

In his career, Pedro is 9-8, 2.88 in 24 starts against the Yankees. Is that evidence that Pedro is somehow worse against the Yankees- above and beyond the fact that the Yankees tend to have a better lineup than most other teams- than he is against everyone else? Nope.
I will say that I am not looking forward to this series. Unless the Sox sweep or win it 4-1, it will be more stressful than anything else. I have enough to worry about that I'm not really looking forward to coming home and being stressed out in front of the TV for 3 1/2 hours every night for the next week. The series with the A's has to rank as one of the best postseason series in recent memory, but I couldn't really appreciate it as a baseball fan. More than anything, I hope the Sox win the Series this year so that I can just relax and enjoy rooting for this team for the rest of my life, rather than having this overwhelming sense of gravity about everything that happens.

Curse my ass. It's these kinds of decisions that have helped establish the record of futility the Sox currently enjoy. |
