No, what I mean was, the AI would make moronic 30mil contracts even when their revenue is similar to the Devil Rays. It only happens when the cash cap is very high.

what about with no cash cap but a salary cap around 80-85 mill? thats how I've done a few leagues and it worked well for my team, but I didn't really pay attention to any of the other teams payrolls

A salary cap does a great job of forcing competitive balance. But I am looking for a more realistic aspect to solo play. That means giving the large market teams, especially the Yankees, much more money to deal with.

wouldn't it in effect do that, especially if you were to set a high enough salary cap since some teams have poor fan markets they'd only be able to spend 50 or so million and not even have the salary cap come into consideration, it would just be a way to keep the bigger markets from spending too much

If I want to have a gap between the rich clubs and smaller market teams I edit the merchandising revenue.

Market Sizes will go up and down and have to do with how much money a particular team will get from TV, both local and National.

Fan Interest is obviously going to be the factor in how many people are paying to watch your team play at the ballpark.

But Merchandising will stay about the same each year. If I want to give a team like New York or Boston a big advantage....I give them a considerable amount more than the rest of the league. I'll give the smaller markets, Montreal or Pittsburgh next to nothing.

I think in my most recent league I gave the NYY something like 50.0 million...while giving the Expos 3 million....when you add in the fact that the Yanks also have a Huge market (TV money) compared to the Expos Tiny.....as well as having a larger stadium....it gives the bigger teams a decided edge in financial resources. Now whether the AI takes advantage of this is not always the case.

But in the mid 80's and early 90's even the real Yankees were not that successful despite having a $$$ advantage.

In "real life" there is no salary cap. How can a salary cap be realistic when it does not exist! As for the bogus luxury tax, the Yanks will just buck up and pay the extra dough into the pool. If you want realistic, use no cap and increase the TV deal money to a realistic figure. The Yankees 40 man roster has a payroll of what, 160 million? I bet they still make a profit. You will need to set their income somewhere over the 200 million mark for realism and they need to have the ability to spend it. A salary cap of 200 million might work, but what is the point of a cap that high?

No and I still can't find it. The point of the original thread was to make the game more like the MLB. That is what I am talking about. If I were the MLB commissioner I would do everything possible to get a hard cap like the NFL. There is a reason that the NFL crushes MLB in ratings, and competitive balance IMO has alot to do with it.

no, the NFL crushes the MLB in ratings because football is a more exciting sport to watch so more people are into it, plus football games are once a week so are much more important than baseball games. Each football game accounts for 6.25% of a teams overall record, each baseball game accounts for .617% of a teams overall record. Competitive balance has very little to do with why football is more popular than baseball.

Gambling is also a major factor to the nfl's popularity.

Personally I would hate to have the player movement that the nfl has come in to the NHL or MLB.

Back on topic, I have a cap at 100mil and a team cash max at 50mil, but the problem with my setup is there is a 'real life' difference in payrolls. Some teams will be at 40mil while others are 90+.

The problem I have is there are too many teams that just simply dont spend money even when they can afford it.

As far as the gambling goes. I think there is more gambling on football because of it's popularity not the other way around. Ask a bookie which sport is a better bet as far as odds go. It is Baseball.

I don't believe Football to be more exciting than Baseball. I refuse to watch Football and haven't watched a single game in 6 years. I find a no hitter in the bottom of the 8th to be as exciting as anything Football has to offer. So it depends on the fan as to which is more exciting.

I use $50M and that seems to work out great. Big market teams sign the big boys and maybe a team or two will get a small amount of money to keep them afloat.

Any more than that and you would eliminate a couple of negative money teams getting some cash to at least pay their players. Any less and more teams would get money at the end of the season, thus more balance.

It's as close I can get it to mirror real MLB.

I thought I've said enough on this. Yes there was no cap in real life. However, in real life, you'll never see owners saving 20mil a year just to spend those money 5 years later. They'd just take away the profit. That in a sense is cash cap.

Also there is a serious issue of how AI use it cash. You can go back and search the numerous threads about how AI would sign players to ridiculous contracts like 50 mil a year, and ruin a small market team. AI only does that when they got too much cash in hand. Basically most good free agents will be way overpaid in a high cash cap setting. Teams can go into cycles of saving a few years, then overspend a few years. When did you ever see that in real life? How is small market team giving out huge contracts "more like the MLB"?

Some people have talked about adjusting merchandising revenue and even giving teams extra cash. I have several teams with no cash, but I don't see were you can edit how much cash a team has. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Skipaway,
I see your point and now agree with you on the cash max. I think it might be more realistic to set it low or none at all. But, I stand by my opposition to salary caps on solo play.
