I don't think you can necessarily compare stealing to triples. What stadium are these guys playing in?

The guy with 15 this year is playing in Edison - 145 triples rating. The guy with 3 is playing in PNC - 130 rating.

I don't know if you can compare triples to steals either, but if you can't, just what was so unrealistic about the old system? Part of what I don't get about this is why it was changed in the first place. I can't find any thread on it, but I heard it said that the old system was though to be unrealistic.

I think what happened was that Markus realized that the triples system was flawed in earlier versions, leading to players with very little speed but very good triples ratings collecting more than a realistic number of triples. In his attempt to fix the problem, Markus decided to factor speed heavily into the equation to the near exclusing of the triples rating. A better solution would probably have been to limit triples ratings for players with little speed, but I'm sure Markus felt that this new system was more realistic than the old one.

If we really want to see what, if anything effects triple capability, I would suggest collecting all the triples leaders from 1901, #3B, #HR, and #SB.

This way we could see if there is any relation to either speed or power - and by time Era. If there is, Markus can take that into consideration - if not, then a triples rating makes sense.

My "gut" feel is you'll find more of a relationship with speed that you think.

I definitely think there's a relationship to speed - the question is how much of a relationship there is to SBs, which have more components than just speed.

Regardless, though, It doesn't look to me like the current system has any closer tie between triples and steals than the old system did. I also didn't see a close relationship with the speed rating, which really surprised me.

It's water under the bridge, but I think the sensible "fix" would have been simply to tie the triples and speed ratings very closely for new players (and in roster creation). The ratio between doubles and triples is probably the best pure indicator of speed in a real player.
