Finishing a lost season

The Chicks finished their season in last place, winning only 55 games, but avoiding losing 100 in the last series of the year. It was a difficult slog for all involved.

In one of the tightest races in years, 3 teams are battling for 1 spot in the National League behind the Dodgers; Giants, Braves and Cardinals all within a half game of one another with scant days left in the year.

All-New York playoffs (Cleveland wants to say something)

All three New York teams have made the playoffs for the first time in history, with the Yankees hosting the American League Championship Series, and the shocking New York Giants waiting until the last game of the last day of the season to clinch their spot.

The Cardinals shockingly lost to the Cubs, and the Giants only needed a tie to force a one game playoff, but they ended up beating the Phillies and getting the fourth and final spot. Cleveland clinched on the 2nd to the last day of the season their spot.

And in just one day, both the Yankees and Dodgers clinch spots to the Fall Classic. The Yankees on a game winning hit by Aaron Robinson, Brooklyn with 7 runs in the 7th and 8th inning combined.

Yankees/Dodgers

The Yankees and the Dodgers will bring these pitchers to the hill as the games will be scheduled with one off day on Saturday for the series as there is a very short train ride between New York and Brooklyn.

All games will be broadcast across the East Coast on television and across the world on radio and telegraph.

Still following Just fyi, any same-city series in that era would've had no off days. And they especially would not have inserted an off day on a Saturday, as the weekends were the biggest draws. In fact, the default "off day policy" for that era was to have none unless absolutely necessary. The exception from 1941 thru 1946 was an off day scheduled after game six in order to spur ticket sales for game seven.

For examples:

The 1945 WS between the Cubs & Tigers had no scheduled off days (except the off day for ticket sales, as described above). Had the matchup been Cards vs Cubs, the schedule would've been the same.

The 1946 World Series - had Brooklyn won the NL playoff - would've taken place on consecutive days (with the noted exception).

The 1947 World Series was actually - just like yours - between the Yankees and Dodgers, but with no off days scheduled.

The 1948 World Series between Cleveland and Boston - no off days. Had the Cards won the NL, travel days would've been needed. If the Pirates, Dodgers, or Braves had won the NL (those were the other teams in contention and invited to the postseason planning meeting), then no off days would've been scheduled.

This pattern held until the early 60's... The '57 & '58 matchups between the Yankees and Milwaukee and the '59 one between the LA Dodgers and White Sox required travel days due to geography, but those World Series' would've been played on consecutive days if only east coast teams had been involved.

In 1960 the Pirates and Yankees were the very likely WS participants as of the time of the postseason planning meeting. However, with other teams - including those further away (StL, Milw, Chic, Balt) still in the running - the desire to lock in a schedule ahead of time won out; thus, the off days for travel were included even though they ended up not being needed.

The plans for 1961 were a bit murkier, but in 1962 an LA-vs-LA matchup would've had no travel days. All other potential matchups would've included travel days. The thinking had changed by this time, however. For example, a Cinc-NYY or Pitt-NYY would not have "required" travel days, yet they still would've been included - presumably - as being in the best interest of the players, whereas same-city matchups were still seen as practical.

The only potential matchups in '63 were either LA or StL vs NYY, so travel days were built into the schedule...

No off days were a possibility for the '64 series (lots of teams in the running), though the eventual series between StL & NYY required them... A similar scenario (of many teams in the running) occurred in '65, but the simple approach of locking in off days was implemented (although it's worth noting that of the teams in the running, there were no same-city scenarios and only a couple of possibilities where cities were nearby; for example, Cinc vs Clev was a possibility, but highly unlikely.)

It's not clear if the by '66 the off days had been permanently built into the schedule, or if they were included this year simply because Balt was a lock for the AL and all teams in the running in the NL were far away. However, by '67 the off days after games 2 and 5 were permanent.

This is surely more info than you wanted and not AT ALL intended as criticism as to how you are doing things. It's just fyi

Southern Association Champs Chattanooga

Chattanooga's Lookouts clinched the Southern League title in 1947, winning over the New Orleans Pelicans in five games, clinching the title on the road in New Orleans in a 5-4 victory.

The World Series is tied at 2 games a piece as one more game is played in Brooklyn. Yankees won the first two games of the series, Brooklyn the next two played at Ebbets Field.

Dodgers For The First Time

For the first time in history, the Brooklyn Dodgers have won a World Series, and the way they did it was stunning. Winning four straight games from the New York Yankees, who got home field even with seven fewer wins than the Dodgers, proves how great of a team Brooklyn was all season.

Carl Furillo had 9 hits and 6 RBIs in the series proving he was the best player on the field, a field filled with All-Stars.

Now it is Los Angeles and San Francisco's turn as they will join the Major Leagues and specifically the American League for the 1948 season.

Expansion Ball in Southern California!

Trevor Morris was not seen as a viable candidate for the Los Angeles Angels job. The owner of the Angels went through dozens of applications, perhaps hundreds, before finding his man. He wanted somebody with some sort of experience. What Morris had was not what you'd expect, starting in Charlotte with the Hornets before getting a shocking call to go to Memphis and work with the Chickasaws, which had so few players on the roster that Morris had to insert himself on the team.

In the Major Leagues, it doesn't look like Morris will have to do this. While San Francisco will likely be playing in a small, 18,500-seat stadium for their first season, Los Angeles will play the vast majority of their games in the massive, 93,000-seat Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The interest in the Angels has been rather high over the past few months, as the baseball team joins a crowded sports landscape, with the Los Angeles Rams, newly moved from Cleveland, an All-American Football Conference team, USC and UCLA football in the Pacific Coast Conference, plus all sorts of other major events every year.

Season tickets are still a major issue with a possible club, as it is such a large stadium and even selling 15-20K would mean some very small looking crowds. Executives are hoping a honeymoon phase helps to grow the attendance in what will likely be a long first season in the City of Angels.

The First Year Player Draft!

The Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Seals will be willing participants in the first First-Year Player Draft in Major League Baseball, held in Miami on November 15. All eighteen teams will participate in the draft, and the expansion teams will pick 17th and 18th, as the other team owners were not willing to give the new teams any favors.

Willie Mays looks to be the top pick by the Chicago Cubs, as they finished with the worst record in 1947 and got the first pick in the draft. Second pick goes to the Chicago White Sox, as both Windy City teams hope to turn around their fortunes starting in 1948.

The draft will go as long as possible until every player is picked.

Hank Workman

Hank Workman, from Los Angeles itself, was the first signee to sign with the Los Angeles Angels with a 3rd round pick. He projects as a first baseman at the major league level and went to the University of Southern California. In fact, he is still going there now. His drafting and signing will bring some local fans to the Angels.
