Game 1, October 16th, 1904, the Polo Grounds, New York Road Win Lifts New York to 1-0 Lead in WS One game in and the World Series is already looking exhausting. The New York Highlanders and the New York Giants needed 10 innings to settle Game 1, with the Highlanders finally taking the 5-3 victory at the Polo Grounds. Excelling in the win was New York pitcher Joe McGinnity, who threw 8.0 innings allowing 3 runs. The Highlanders and Giants are playing a best-of-7 series. Mike Donlin came through with a big-time hit for New York. The left fielder smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to give his team the lead, 5-3. It was his only hit, but it was clutch. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York. Highlanders lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 17th, 1941, the Polo Grounds, New York New York Tops New York Again, 8-7 A big day at the plate from left fielder Sam Mertes was not enough to keep the New York Highlanders from extending their lead in the World Series. The Highlanders topped Mertes and the New York Giants, 8-7, at the Polo Grounds in Game 2, and now hold a 2-0 edge in the best-of-7 series. Mertes went 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3 in the loss. New York used the timely hitting of Charlie Babb to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Highlanders on top, 7-6. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer. The next game is set to be played on October 19th, 1904 at Hilltop Park in New York. The largest share of the credit belongs to New York starter Christy Mathewson, who threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The result might have been different, had it not been for 32-year-old left fielder Sam Mertes. Mertes had a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Giants ahead, 3-2. For the game, Mertes had 1 double and 2 singles in 5 at-bats. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York. Babb went 3-4 with 3 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2 for the Highlanders, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 2. Making an impact for New York was shortstop Joe Tinker. He drilled a run-scoring double off Bob Ewing in the bottom of the second. For the game, Tinker was 3-5 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. The next game is set to be played on October 23rd, 1904 at the Polo Grounds in New York.
