We're now midway through August and the AL race just got more interesting. I said earlier that I didn't think the Detroit Tigers stood a chance of getting back into the race after losing Cash and Lolich to injuries. So, guess what, yup, the Tigers have been on fire and now sit only a game and 1/2 behind the first place Yankees and 1 game behind the Orioles. Just finished watching a great series between the Orioles and Tigers before coming to work today. The Tigers rode a 5 game winning streak into the series and jumped all over the Orioles in game one to extend the win streak to 6 games. Game 2 of the series, game 1 of a doubleheader, seen the Tigers once again jump all over the Orioles, rolling to a 7-2 lead by the 4th inning. Then the wheels came off the bus. Before one could blink an eye, the Orioles were in front 8-7 and the Tigers winning streak was no more. The next two games were low scoring nail biters with the Tigers taking the 3rd game of the series and Orioles game 4.
Just prior to the Orioles-Tigers series, I watched what a series between the two teams tied for the NL lead the Giants and the Reds. This one was all Giants. The Giants were firing on all cylinders sweeping the 3 game series putting them up 3 games on the Reds. By the time the Orioles-Tigers series was over the Giants lead was up to 5 games. Meanwhile, the St Louis Cardinals have fallen all the way to 4th place, with the Pittsburgh Pirates taking over 3rd place. The Cardinals should get Stan Musial back soon though as his health has improved. |

Juan Marichal is now 18-1.
The Giants are at some point going to be dealing with a very angry Willie McCovey. McCovey had been a major cog in the Giants lineup for most of the 61 season so far, hitting .293 with 20+ home runs and driving in runs at a healthy clip. Towards the end of July, early August, Harvey Kuenn was activated from the IL and since that time, McCovey has been relegated to the role of pinch hitter. Now Kuenn is having a really solid season as well, so I can see why the Giants brass wants his bat in the lineup, but earlier in the season the Giants were able to keep both McCovey and Kuenn in the lineup. Right now they have Kuenn playing LF and Orlando Cepeda playing 1B. Felipe Alou is playing RF. I'm guessing earlier in the season, before his injury, Kuenn may have been starting at 3B, SS or even 2B, with McCovey or Cepeda playing LF. Maybe if they keep winning, everyone will remain happy, but I'm doubtful. |

Roger Maris has been stuck on 39 home runs since early August. Meanwhile Don Mincher has been clobbering them at a healthy clip of late. Mincher is now only 1 behind Maris for the AL lead with 38. The Twins as team have hit 175 bombs so far this season.
We once again have a new leader at the top of the NL batting title race. Pittsburgh's Dick Groat surged past Ken Boyer to take the lead. Last edited by David Watts; 07-18-2024 at 09:39 AM. |

Could it be two in a row for Groat?

Glad to see the Giants have moved Kuenn to SS and now have McCovey back in the starting lineup.

Then on July 29th the Pirates traded RP Al McBean and RP Julio Imbert for 2B Charlie Neal. So far Neal has been struggling for the Pirates. 25 games in he's hitting .165 with a .267 OBP. He has played error free ball though., Maz is a free agent at the end of the season, so that's probably why they traded him. |

Yea, not in contention, dump the FAs who are too hard to sign.
What surprises me when I play money restricted is the number of times I'll trade away a pending FA and the receiving team doesn't sign him to an extension. Considering how little they gave up the Phils must believe Maz won't sign an extension. Last edited by Brad K; 07-18-2024 at 11:40 PM. |

Roger Maris got back into his home run groove and now has 45 or 46 bombs on the season(at work). Orlando Cepeda has taken advantage of a Hank Aaron injury to take over the home run lead in the NL with 34, one better than Ken Boyer 33 and Aaron 32.
The season has reached the month of September The San Francisco Giants are in first place in the National League. They lead the St. Louis Cardinals by 6 games. The AL has the New York Yankees sitting at the top, 3 games better than the Baltimore Orioles. The Tigers now find themselves 8 games back after back to back series against the Yankees and Orioles that saw them win only 1 game. So much for getting Norm Cash back in the lineup. Ken Boyer got hot again and managed to pass Dick Groat in the NL batting title race. The two are really close though, so it's far from decided. Mickey Mantle continues at the top of the AL batting title race. Mickey has been on the IL as of late and has 3 days left before he returns. Mantles injury opened a spot in the Yankees lineup for a young Deron Johnson to step into. Johnson has taken full advantage of the opportunity hitting cleanup for the Yankees, crushing 5 home runs along the way. |

Maris is now up to 51 home runs. The Yankees have 11 games left to play. 61 is possible, but very unlikely. The Yankees magic number is down to 6.
Giants magic number is listed as 17. Looks like the AL playing 162 game schedule and NL 154, has the NL magic number messed up.. |

Maris hits number 52 in game 152, There's still a chance.
Frank Robinson hit .390 over 100 at bats in August and over 48 September at bats he's hitting .396. Robinson is now tied with Ken Boyer for the batting title. Both are hitting .344. Dick Groat isn't far behind, hitting .340. Richie Ashburn picked up hit number 2500 today. Juan Marichal is now 22-2 |

Game 154, Maris hits number 53. Meanwhile, the Yankees have now dropped 5 in a row, the last 2 to the 2nd place Orioles. Their lead is down to 4 games.
Willie Mays has taken over the NL home run lead with 38, one better than his teammate Orlando Cepeda. Amazing thing here is Mays has only played in 112 games due to a lengthy injury earlier in the season. Dick Groat has went 9-15 over his last 3 games and now leads the NL in hitting with a .347 average. Frank Robinson has fallen to .338 and Ken Boyer to .337 |

Yankees lose again to the Orioles and their lead is now down to 2 1/2 games. Maris still sits at 53 home runs.

New York finally beat the Orioles. Their lead is now 3 1/2 and they've clinched the AL Pennant. Maris once again went homerless,
Ernie Banks hit his 300th home run today. |

The San Francisco Giants are the 1961 World Series Champions. The Giants got out to 3-0 lead in the series, dropped the next 2 at home and then won game 6, 2-1. Orlando Cepeda took home MVP honors going 10-26 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI.
