They could release the game in January, and the time until opening day would be spent building teams with the static live cards for the past season. Then they would roll out a brand new set of live cards on opening day (maybe handing out six free packs of new live only cards to everyone) to start the things we do through the World Series in November, leaving two months for the end of season awards missions, etc.

Historical cards would run in parallel, and the timing would be such that some of the missions to earn historical cards would require past season live cards and others the truly live cards.
