Regarding the DH, this SABR article may be of interest as it traces the history of the rule.
The idea of a pitcher being replaced by a designated hitter in the batting order goes all the way back to 1891. Had things gone just a little differently, the DH might have been the rule and the way baseball was played for over a century. |
