To answer my own question, I set up a test league, 2 sub-leagues of 10 teams each, 162-game schedule, season ending September 30. On the last day of the season prior to any games being played, I was able to go to League Settings, Options, Customize Playoffs, and change what the playoffs would be--1st-place teams only with no Wild Cards; Wild Cards in each league; even Wild Cards in one sub-league but 1st-place team only in the other.
So, we can truly be Baseball Gods and decide who makes the playoffs--if anyone does!--and what those playoffs look like as late as the last day of the season. Thanks, OOTP!
