I’m living my dream…

Witness these grand games as America's pastime is being played to the ultimate; no bias, no cheating just an alternative of the game decided by the weights and measures of players and the random toss from the mound… this is pure baseball.

This is the Game!

Detroit Dukes (8-1) @ Atlanta Kings (1-8)
Dukes Sweep Series 3-0
Detroit's steamrolling their way through the first three series of the season with their second sweep.

GAME 1 - Dukes Collect 1-0 Win Over Kings
Detroit Dukes starter Mike Miranda was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Atlanta Kings, 1-0. Jordan Allison earned the save for Detroit, his 4th of the year. The Dukes, now 6-1, have stormed out of the gates.

Miranda, now 2-0, scattered 4 hits over 11 innings for the Dukes.

"We came out on the wrong end of this one," said Atlanta skipper T.J. Cameron.

GAME 2 - Dukes Drop Kings, 6-2
Detroit Dukes starter Jose Flores was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Atlanta Kings, 6-2. The Dukes, now 7-1, have stormed out of the gates.

Detroit relied on the hitting of Juan Aranda to pick up the win. The first baseman clubbed a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Dukes on top, 3-0. For the game, Aranda had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"We'll keep playing hard and let the chips fall where they may," said Detroit manager Jose Perez.

GAME 3 - Solis Skunks Kings
It wasn't easy but Jon Solis made it look that way.

Solis silenced the Atlanta Kings, 5-0, in a Detroit Dukes triumph at Kings Field today. Despite the appearance of dominance, Solis said later that he felt like he was struggling all game. He gave up 3 walks and 1 hit.

"It didn't feel quite right today, but I made the decision to bear down and work through it," he said. "I made a few mistakes but it goes to show what you can do with grit and not much else."

Minneapolis Blizzard (2-7) @ Charlotte Colonels (6-3)
Colonels Sweep Series 3-0
Strong pitching and timely hitting has Charlotte securing their second straight sweep.

GAME 1 - Late Rally by Colonels Seals 4th Straight Win
The home crowd had a good time watching the Minneapolis Blizzard and Charlotte Colonels get after it.

The performance of Julio Haro proved critical in helping Charlotte beat Minneapolis, 6-4. The Colonels shortstop was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He drove in 3 runs. Tony Barnes was the winning pitcher. Over 8 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 11 hits, with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. Earning his 2nd save of the year was Edwin Martinez.

Charlotte took a 5-4 lead on Santiago Castro's 2nd double of the season. The 2-run double, which Castro hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Minneapolis pitcher Emilio Lopez visibly frustrated.

"The vibe's good," said Charlotte manager Jason Wainwright. "We've got to keep it going."

The loss makes Minneapolis 2-5.

GAME 2 - Colonels Subdue Minneapolis, 6-5
The Charlotte Colonels withstood an impressive performance by Minneapolis designated hitter Hirotoshi Nishimoto to defeat the Blizzard, 6-5, at Colonels Park. Nishimoto was 2 for 4 with a home run. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Jordan Williams, the winner, goes to 1-0. He allowed 5 runs on 9 hits, with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts over 7 innings. The win puts Charlotte at 5-3.

The outcome might have differed if Sergio Barraza had not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Barraza hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Colonels.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Barraza.

GAME 3 - Umana Pitches 6-0 Shutout for Charlotte
The Charlotte Colonels whipped the Minneapolis Blizzard 6-0 at Colonels Park today behind a masterful outing from starter Roberto Umana.

Umana shut out the Blizzard on 4 hits and 1 walk. He registered 6 strikeouts over 9 innings.

"Velocity felt good, everything felt good today," a smiling Umana said later. "Command felt good, conditions felt good, glove felt good, that felt good. Seriously everything."

"I got in a good groove," said Aguilar. "I was getting some swings and misses."

Los Angeles relied on the hitting of Bill Haywood to pick up the win. The right fielder clubbed a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Cobras on top, 2-0. For the game, Haywood had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"Bottom line," said Chicago skipper Matt Mead, "we didn't play well enough to win."

Jimenez attributed the win to his team's "hyper resolve."

Phoenix Firebirds (4-5) @ Dallas Rustlers (7-2)
Rustlers Win Series 2-1
Dallas continues their solid start with a strong team series win.

GAME 2 - Firebirds Win at Dallas, 5-3
Phoenix catcher Rafael Hill made his presence felt in the 5-3 Firebirds triumph over the Dallas Rustlers. Hill went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times. The loss makes Dallas 6-2.

The outcome might have been different for Phoenix, had it not been for Josh Harrison, the 28-year-old center fielder. Harrison stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put Phoenix up, 5-3. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.

April 17, 1981 | Gamblers Park | Las Vegas, NV
Cincinnati Cougars vs. Las Vegas Gamblers

Let’s meet our teams:
The Cincinnati Cougars won the ABC Central Division last year by five games over the Houston Mavericks with a record of 97-65, the American conference’s best mark. They’ve appeared in the playoffs four times in 1976, 77, 79, and 80. Last season the Cougars lost in six games to the Houston Mavericks in the division series. As a matter of fact, the Cougars have been eliminated each time by the Houston Mavericks! In 1976 they lost in seven in the DCS, in 1977 after sweeping Portland in the DCS, they lost to Houston in six in the Conference Championship Series. In 1979 they lost in seven to Houston in the DCS. The Cincinnati – Houston rivalry has been very one-sided in the postseason. Something the hometown faithful hope the team corrects!

The Las Vegas Gamblers are off to a surprise start. While the pundits may have predicted a Seattle ABC Western division coup, Las Vegas has started quickly. The Gamblers had a record of 89-73 last season finishing ten games ahead of the Portland Lumberjacks winning the ABC Western Division for their second playoff appearance. They defeated the Pittsburgh Express in the 1980 DCS in 5 only to succumb to the eventual conference champ Houston Mavericks by the same tally. Their previous playoff appearance was in the inaugural season of 1972 where they were the wild-card and lost to the eventual conference champ Denver Rocketeers.

Cincinnati Cougars lead the series 67 – 41

GAME 2 - Lynn Excels in 8-5 Tampa Bay Win
Tampa Bay and San Diego duked it out and the Storm came out victorious.

The Tampa Bay Storm downed the San Diego Seraphs, 8-5, at Seraphs Field. Cory Lynn led the way, going 4-for-5 for Tampa Bay. Luis Carrera closed it out for his 2nd save.

Lynn contributed in the top of the fourth. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, he hit a 2-run double. It was one at-bat among others that helped Tampa Bay get the win.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Lynn told the Tampa Bay Gazette.

Tampa Bay is now 4-7.

GAME 3 - Storm Win at San Diego, 7-4
Nate Smeltz helped his team muscle past the San Diego Seraphs, 7-4. In the game, the Tampa Bay designated hitter was 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. The win has Tampa Bay at 5-7.

In the top of the first of a scoreless game, Smeltz hit a 2-run home run to put his team ahead.

"I felt good up there," said Smeltz. "I saw the ball well."

Miami Hurricanes (6-6) @ San Francisco Warriors (7-5)
Hurricanes Win Series 2-1
San Francisco breaks up sweep attempt with game 3 laugher.

GAME 1 - Hurricanes Get One-Run Win at San Francisco
The Miami Hurricanes did just enough to sneak past the San Francisco Warriors, 2-1, at San Francisco Grounds. Miami pitcher Bill Borden, in particular, had a standout performance. Borden went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 0, and struck out 4. His record improves to 2-1. Eric Behan got the save, the 2nd for him this season.

Dave Trujillo, the 33-year-old shortstop, had a direct impact on the outcome. Trujillo contributed a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put Miami up, 2-0.

"I just trusted my stuff," said Borden.

Miami goes to 5-5.

GAME 2 - Hurricanes Upend Warriors, 4-2
Miami Hurricanes starter David Victorero was in a rhythm all game. He led his team to a win over the San Francisco Warriors, 4-2. The win gives Miami a record of 6-5.

Miami used a well-timed hit by Jose Barajas to capture the win. The second baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Hurricanes ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Barajas, "one at bat at a time."

GAME 3 - Pineda, Warriors Get 10-1 Win
The San Francisco Warriors topped the Miami Hurricanes, 10-1, in National Baseball Conference action at San Francisco Grounds. The game was highlighted by the performance of San Francisco pitcher Antonio Pineda. San Francisco goes to 7-5.

Pineda gave San Francisco a solid start. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 9 innings.

"We'll savor this win," Pineda told the San Francisco Citizen, "then get ready for the next game."

Dallas Rustlers (9-3) @ Los Angeles Cobras (8-4)
Rustlers Win Series 2-1
Dallas puts an exclamation point on the series win with a game 3 blowout.

GAME 1 - Cobras Need Extra Innings to Top Rustlers, 7-6
Cobras fans were treated to an exciting walk-off win.

The Los Angeles Cobras downed the Dallas Rustlers, 7-6. The hitting star was right fielder Bill Haywood. Haywood was 3 for 6 with a home run and a double while scoring 2 and driving in 2 for the Cobras. The win puts Los Angeles at 8-2.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when Los Angeles first baseman Ramon Reyes, facing Joe Guy, had a run-scoring ground out. It gave the Cobras the 7-6 win.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Dallas manager Brian Parsley. "The effort was great."

GAME 2 - Rustlers Deal Cobras 7-5 Defeat
The Dallas Rustlers overcame a good performance by Los Angeles second baseman Emmanuel Robertson to knock off Los Angeles, 7-5, at Cobras Ballpark. Robertson went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Gabriel Zayas, who went 7 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 4 runs on 8 hits while walking 5 and striking out 3. His record now stands at 3-0. The Rustlers raised their record to 8-3.

Dallas used the bat of Rich Vela to get the win. The left fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Rustlers ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it did its damage.

"Our guys are never satisfied," said Dallas manager Brian Parsley.

GAME 3 - Barlow Shines in 14-4 Dallas Win
Devon Barlow was a major factor in the 14-4 Dallas win over Los Angeles. The Rustlers catcher was 3 for 6 with a home run, a triple, and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 5. The win puts Dallas at 9-3.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Jose Castillo? The Dallas second baseman had a bases-clearing double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Rustlers on top, 7-3. For the game, Castillo had 1 double and 2 singles in 4 at-bats.

"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Castillo.

Chicago Fire (6-6) @ Phoenix Firebirds (5-7)
Fire Wins Series 2-1
Dallas continues their solid start with a strong team series win.

GAME 1 - Walk-Off Win Makes Phoenix 5-5
Phoenix pitcher Stephen Grimes did his part in helping his team beat the Chicago Fire, 4-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. The winner was Phoenix reliever Omar Espinoza, now 1-0. The loser was Oscar Roa. The win gives Phoenix a record of 5-5.

The Firebirds procured the win, in large part because of second baseman Raul de la Torre. In the bottom of the tenth, he produced the game-winning run-scoring double.

"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Firebirds manager Bill Benisch.

GAME 2 - Jury Now 1-0 After Subduing Firebirds
The Chicago Fire picked up a win at Phoenix Grounds, knocking off the Phoenix Firebirds, 7-1. Starting pitcher John Jury played a key role in the triumph. The victory makes Chicago 5-6.

"He's got some good stuff, but we should have done better than that," said Phoenix skipper Bill Benisch after the 5-0 loss.

Gonzalez was on target most of the game and finished with 13 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Atlanta Kings (3-12) @ Charlotte Colonels (10-5)
Colonels Win Series 2-1
Charlotte takes rubber game with walk-off grand-slam.

GAME 1 - Colonels Turn Back Atlanta, 3-1
The Charlotte Colonels got a magnificent performance from pitcher Roberto Umana, who muffled the Atlanta offense en route to a tight 3-1 Colonels win at Colonels Park. Umana, the winner, moves to 3-0. He threw 8 innings of 2-hit ball while fanning 2 and giving up 4 walks. The loss puts Atlanta at 2-11.

A critical at-bat came in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Colonels sent 22-year-old right fielder Miguel Salazar to the plate with the bases loaded. The youngster shook off the pressure and drew a walk, driving in 1 run, to put Charlotte on top, 3-1.

"We'll put that win in the can," said Salazar, "and go after the next one."

GAME 2 - Ybanez Now 2-2 After Subduing Colonels
Atlanta Kings starter Bill Ybanez pitched a strong game against the Charlotte Colonels at Colonels Park, leading the Kings to victory, 1-0. Atlanta is off to a sluggish start, getting just their 3rd win in 14 games.

Ybanez gave Atlanta a solid start. The right-hander allowed no runs on 4 hits over 8 innings.

"That's baseball," said Charlotte manager Jason Wainwright. "Sometimes the other team plays better than yours."

GAME 3 - Charlotte Gets Riveting Walk-Off Win
Charlotte Colonels starter Jose Hernandez was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Atlanta Kings, 8-5. Charlotte goes to 10-5.

The game ended with a bang. In the bottom of the ninth, with Charlotte trailing 5-4, Cody Larkin jumped on a 1-1 cutter from Mason Chaisson for a grand slam home run, sending the Colonels to a walk-off win.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Hernandez said after the game.

As a result of his tirade and temper tantrum in the first inning during yesterday's Colonels-Kings game at Colonels Park, Charlotte center fielder Santiago Castro will get some time off. He was issued a 4-game suspension by the league commissioner. Castro was suspended for verbally abusing and physically bumping the home plate umpire after being ejected for arguing over a third strike.

So far this year Castro is batting .214 with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, and 9 runs scored.
As was shown in last week's NBC Featured Game the Colonels are going to miss his defense!

"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said Tampa Bay skipper Mike Khoury.

GAME 3 - Fortichiari Shines in 10-6 Miami Win
A nice crowd turned out for a clash between the Miami Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Storm.

Miami first baseman Isidoro Fortichiari contributed to his team's 10-6 win over the Tampa Bay Storm. Fortichiari went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Hurricanes. Getting the save was Luis Prieto, his 1st.

With Miami leading 1-0 in the top of the first, Fortichiari hit a curveball from Sergio Martinez for a 3-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season, putting the Hurricanes ahead, 4-0.

New York tops division rival in tight series where ten total runs were scored.

GAME 1 - Magana, Aces Get 2-0 Win
The New York Aces picked up a win at Aces Field, knocking off the Boston Patriots, 2-0. Starting pitcher Pablo Magana played a key role in the triumph. The Patriots drop to 6-7 and continue their mediocre start to the 1981 season.

Magana gave New York a solid start. The right-hander allowed no runs on 4 hits over 8 innings.

"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Magana told the New York Daily.

GAME 2 - Boston Beats New York, 3-1
The Boston Patriots had to overcome a fine performance from New York pitcher Dusty Bradley to grab a 3-1 win at Aces Field. Bradley allowed 3 runs over 9 innings. Boston goes to 7-7.

Boston used the bat of Joe Turner to get the win. The first baseman hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Patriots ahead, 2-0. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it did its damage.

"We take it day by day here," said Turner, "and today was a good one for us."

GAME 3 - Aces Bridle Patriots, 3-1
The New York Aces beat the Boston Patriots, 3-1, at Aces Field. Starting pitcher Tony Oubre was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. Devon John locked down his 6th save. The win puts New York at 9-6.

Paul MacPherson had a critical at-bat with two out in the bottom of the seventh for New York. He came through with a run-scoring single to put New York in front, 3-1.

MacPherson called the win "a team effort."

Philadelphia Fury (7-8) @ Pittsburgh Express (6-9)
Fury Wins Series 2-1
Philadelphia fails to sweep as Pittsburgh ace pitches a complete game 3.

GAME 1 - Ono Tosses Shutout Against Pittsburgh
In an outstanding mound performance, Philadelphia Fury starter Hiroki Ono fired a complete-game shutout against the Pittsburgh Express at Express Stadium today.

Ono was the key to the Fury's 4-0 win. The 27-year-old left-hander was in high spirits on the mount for much of the game, his mood largely undented by the 1 hit and no walks he allowed.

"1 hit?" he said with a laugh following the game. "Listen, I'd be happy with a 30-hitter as long as it was a shutout."

GAME 2 - Fury Derail Express, 11-0
Behind the hitting of Miguel Vasquez, the Philadelphia Fury stopped the Pittsburgh Express, 11-0. Vasquez had deuces wild going 2-2 with 2 singles and 2 walks while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 for the Fury. The Express fell to 5-9 and continue their lackluster start to the 1981 season.

In the top of the third, with the game still scoreless, Vasquez hit a run-scoring single to put his team in the lead.

"We didn't put up much resistance," said losing manager Mark Averill.

GAME 3 - Acuna Masters Philadelphia in Complete Game Win
The Pittsburgh Express picked up a win at Express Stadium, knocking off the Philadelphia Fury, 6-1. Starting pitcher David Acuna played a key role in the triumph. The victory makes Pittsburgh 6-9.

Acuna, the winner, is now 2-1 after putting the clamps on the Philadelphia offense. In 9 innings of work, he gave up 1 run on 5 hits, while collecting 9 Ks.

Acuna told a Pittsburgh Today reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.

Cincinnati Cougars (6-9) @ Houston Mavericks (6-9)
Mavericks Win Series 2-1
Despite game 2 drubbing, Houston walks off in dramatic fashion for the series win.

GAME 1 - Mavericks Top Cougars, 3-1, Behind Wilson
The rain came, as predicted, but the Houston Mavericks and Cincinnati Cougars were able to complete their ballgame.

Getting an impressive start from Dylan Wilson, Houston beat Cincinnati by the score of 3-1. Houston, now 5-8, is off to a slow start.

Wilson was in the zone all game. He frustrated Cincinnati hitters while giving the Mavericks 7 innings of quality work. Wilson threw 135 pitches, allowing 3 hits and getting 8 punchouts.

"I had everything working," said Wilson.

GAME 2 - Cougars Show No Mercy in 11-0 Thrashing of Mavericks
It wasn't easy but Alex Perez made it look that way.

Perez silenced the Houston Mavericks, 11-0, in a Cincinnati Cougars triumph at Houston Stadium today. Despite the appearance of dominance, Perez said later that he felt like he was struggling all game. He gave up 4 walks and 3 hits.

"It didn't feel quite right today, but I made the decision to bear down and work through it," he said. "I made a few mistakes but it goes to show what you can do with grit and not much else."

GAME 3 - Mavericks Nip Cougars, 4-3
The home crowd was treated to a thrilling, walk-off win.

The Houston Mavericks picked up a win at Houston Stadium, knocking off the Cincinnati Cougars, 4-3. On the mound for Houston was right-hander Scott Szell, who played a pivotal role in the win. The loss drops the Cougars to 6-9.

Andres Arenas was the walk-off hero for Houston. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mavericks right fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Szell said after the game.

Nashville Blues (8-7) @ St. Louis Stallions (9-6)
Stallions Win Series 2-1
St. Louis fails to sweep division foe as Nashville scavenges a victory.

GAME 1 - Stallions Down Blues, 4-1
St. Louis Stallions starter Mario Flores was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Nashville Blues, 4-1. In 9 innings, Flores surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 1. He allowed 1 run. The win puts St. Louis at 8-5.

The Stallions got a big at-bat from second baseman Jose Padilla. For the game, Padilla went 2-4 with a double. He drove in 3 runs. In the bottom of the second, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 1st double of the season gave St. Louis a 4-1 lead.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Padilla.

GAME 2 - Stallions Best Blues in Pitching Duel
Stallions Grounds was the site of a true pitchers' duel.

In a low-scoring tilt between the St. Louis Stallions and the Nashville Blues, Willie Gomez was the difference-maker. The St. Louis right-hander spearheaded the 2-0 win. St. Louis, now 9-5, has played well in the early going.

The Stallions had to work out of trouble in the top of the ninth. The score was 2-0, St. Louis, with one out. Nashville, with a runner on 1st, was mounting a threat. Tyreek Morson dug in at the plate, but on a 0-1 cutter, he hit into a double play.

GAME 3 - Nashville Gets 6-3 Win Against Stallions
Nashville Blues starter Alex Alvarez was in fine form against the St. Louis Stallions at Stallions Grounds, leading his team to a win, 6-3. Alvarez went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 7 hits, walked 3, and struck out 4. His record improves to 1-2. The win puts Nashville at 8-7.

Jordan Arteaga, the 25-year-old shortstop, had a direct impact on the outcome. Arteaga contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to put Nashville up, 5-3.

"I just tried to attack the bottom of the zone," Alvarez said.

Denver Rocketeers (8-7) @ Las Vegas Gamblers (11-4)
Gamblers Win Series 2-1
Las Vegas continues hot start with a division series win.

GAME 1 - Rocketeers Drop Gamblers, 5-3, with Late Score
The Rocketeers grabbed a win, 5-3, at Gamblers Park, overcoming a fine effort from Las Vegas pitcher Roger Holder. Holder went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs. The win puts Denver at 8-5.

Javier Martinez, who is tied for 8th in the ABC in stolen bases with 2, aided the Denver cause with a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh. For the game, the shortstop went 2 for 4 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI.

"As well as we've been playing, I think we can play even better," said Denver manager Greg Asche.

GAME 2 - Rodriguez, Gamblers Get 3-1 Win
In a well-pitched game between the Las Vegas Gamblers and the Denver Rocketeers, pitcher Bobby Rodriguez was superb. The Las Vegas right-hander helped his team win, 3-1. Derrek Sanders earned save number 6 this season. Las Vegas, now 10-4, has gotten their season off to a good start.

Rodriguez, the Las Vegas right-hander, playing the role of stopper, went 8 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. He collected 6 strikeouts.

"Bottom line," said Denver skipper Greg Asche, "we didn't play well enough to win."

GAME 3 - Herrera Dominant in Las Vegas Win
The Las Vegas Gamblers got a good effort from starter Oscar Herrera in defeating the Denver Rocketeers at Gamblers Park. The final score was 7-1. Denver drops to 8-7.

In his 102-pitch effort, Herrera allowed no runs on 3 hits over 7 innings. He walked 1 and struck out 5.

"The key at this level is throwing strike one," said Herrera. "Successful pitchers do it."

Portland Lumberjacks (5-10) @ Seattle Comets (8-7)
Comets Win Series 2-1
Seattle manages to come up with a series win vs. a struggling Portland team.

GAME 1 - Comets Prevail, 4-2, Over Portland
Seattle Comets starter Ricardo Sanchez was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Portland Lumberjacks, 4-2. Sanchez, now 2-1, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 3, walking 2, and allowing 2 runs. The Lumberjacks, now 4-9, continue their slow start.

Do-Hyun Hu went 1 for 3 with a walk for Seattle. The 31-year-old third baseman had a key at-bat in the bottom of the third. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring walk, off Fernando Borrego. It was his 8th walk of the season.

"We'll hit the hot tub in good spirits tonight," said Hu.

GAME 2 - Lumberjacks Deal Comets 7-5 Defeat
Portland and Seattle duked it out and the Lumberjacks came out victorious.

Portland shortstop Reomel Bernardo played a vital role in his team's 7-5 triumph over Seattle. He went 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for Portland. The Comets drop to 7-7 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1981 season.

David de Leon dealt the Comets a blow in the top of the eighth. Batting with the bases loaded and Portland leading 5-4, de Leon, who is tied for 3rd in the ABC in RBI with 13, hit a 1-1 fastball for a 2-run single.

"I hate to be the fly in the ointment," said Bernardo, "but we could've played better."

GAME 3 - Comets Edge Past Lumberjacks, 1-0
In a well-pitched game between the Seattle Comets and the Portland Lumberjacks, pitcher Tony Miller was fantastic. The Seattle right-hander helped his team secure the win, 1-0. Seattle reliever Sergio Lopez picked up the win, raising his record to 2-0. Frank Jahr was tagged with the loss. The win has Seattle at 8-7.

Seattle won the game in the bottom of the 12th inning. With no outs and Frank Jahr on the mound for Portland, designated hitter Kevin Fink hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Comets fans to their feet.

"Our team showed some resilience," said Miller.

It's Thursday, April 23, 1981… Time for the first of the four-game division rival series.

This is the crux of the season; 66 games against three teams.
Truly a champion representative emerges from each division from this grind.

Action Baseball League Structure refined for the next 40 seasons

Name: Small-baseball-clipart-clipartfest-2_000000_ffffff.png
Views: 246
Size: 17.4 KB

Action Baseball League (ABL 'able') is a fictional professional baseball organization established in 1972. It consists of 24 teams divided into the National Baseball Conference (NBC) and the American Baseball Conference (ABC). Each conference is further divided into three divisions: Eastern, Central, and Western, with four teams in each division. ABL is committed to ensuring a fair representation of teams from all regions of the nation, including both Northern and Southern cities on both coasts.

ABL's main objective is determining the Grand Champions of Baseball ("The Best of the best"). To achieve this, each conference conducts a 162-game championship season. Each team competes against its conference rivals 12 times, six home games each; 48 games vs. each in-conference division; 96 games total outside the division. Division rivals play each other 22 times each, 11 ball games in each home park for a total of 66 games in the division.

After the regular season, each conference crowns four champions: three Division Champs and one Wild-Card Champ (the non-division champion with the best record).

The Grand Tournament of Champions (GToC) establishes the two conference representatives who compete in the Grand Series. The seeding for the GToC is as follows: Division Champion with the best record is #1, DC with the second-best record is #2, the remaining DC is #3, and Wild Card Champion is #4. The #1 seed will host the #4 seed, and the #2 seed will host the #3 seed.

The tournament consists of three seven-game series: Division Championship Series (DCS), Conference Championship Series (CCS), and Grand Series (GS). The higher seed has a home-field advantage in the DCS and CCS. The team with the best record has the advantage in the GS. Ties are settled by alternating between conferences.

Beginning with the 1981 season, the Wild-Card Champion will no longer play a division rival in the Division Championship Series. If the #1 seed is a team in the same division, the #4 seed will play the #2 seed instead.

Several other notable items about the Action Baseball League include no interleague play, league-wide designated hitter, and an annual interconference All-Star game in July with each team represented. Additionally, no team movement or league expansion will occur during the 50 years of planned seasons from 1972-2022.

Each team has an owner, general manager, field manager, coaching staff, ballpark, and scouting system that influences how it is managed and led. The creator of the league does not intervene in any way with any of the teams but enjoys watching the story of this unique league unfold.

Overall, ABL is a fascinating league with a well-thought-out and structured system for determining the Grand Champions of Baseball. Its unique rules and regulations set it apart from other fictional professional baseball leagues and make it an exciting sport to watch!

ABL is dedicated to providing high-quality baseball entertainment to fans across America. With its talented players, passionate fans, and commitment to fair play and sportsmanship, ABL is poised to become one of the premier fictional baseball leagues in the world.

This is the Game!

National Baseball Conference Spotlight - Kings vs. Hurricanes Rivalry

Miami Hurricanes vs. Atlanta Kings: Ain't No Rivalry Quite Like It, Folks

When the Hurricanes and Kings clash, you better buckle up, because there's no love lost here. This ain't just another series; it's a throwdown, a bare-knuckle brawl of baseball. In the recent four-game showdown that kicked off on April 23, 1981, they didn't disappoint.

The Good Ol' Days

Let's get one thing straight: the Miami-Atlanta feud is the stuff of legends. Miami's got a 103-99 edge in the regular season, but don't tell that to Atlanta. Come playoff time, they're the Kings alright, with four wins in six games. Seven runs separate 'em across history, 842 to 835. Seven runs! You can't script this stuff.

A Roller-Coaster Ride? You Bet!

This series? Pure madness, start to finish. Miami thought they had it, shutting out Atlanta 4-0. But the Kings are no pushovers. They smashed Miami 16-6 across two games, including an 11-3 thrashing that had the Hurricanes spinning. Then Miami got their act together, closing it out 7-1. Even-steven, just like it oughta be.

More Than a Game

This ain't just about balls and strikes. This is history, drama, a legacy. These boys play for pride, for glory, for a chance to be part of something that'll be talked about long after they're gone. They fight, they scrap, but at the end of the day, they know they're part of a rivalry that's bigger than them.

What's Next?

1981's got a lot left, and you better believe both these teams are hungry. They'll duke it out again, mark my words. They'll give us more games to remember, more moments that'll have us on the edge of our seats. And I'll be right there, watching every pitch, every hit, every play. Because this is the Miami-Atlanta rivalry, and there's nothing quite like it in baseball. Period.

Note about my logo:
The Toledo Wild Cats was one of the original teams in the Action Baseball League at its inception. Toledo, OH, is where I was born. When I decided to move the teams to major cities, The Cats moved to Montreal and became the Montreal Jaguars. I decided to have only US cities in this reimagining of the league, so the Jags moved to Miami and became the Miami Hurricanes.
Atlanta has had heated rivalries with Toledo, Montreal, and now Miami!

This is the Game!

Miami Hurricanes (10-9) @ Atlanta Kings (5-14)
Kings Split Series 2-2
Atlanta showing signs of life in series split.

Here's my take: The Miami Hurricanes and Atlanta Kings just wrapped up a four-game series that had fans on the edge of their seats. David Victorero pitched a gem for the 'Canes in Game 1, a 4-0 win, with Isidoro Fortichiari's 2-run homer stealing the show. But the Kings weren't down for long, as Luis Rosales and Mario Rodriguez led Atlanta to a 5-3 comeback in Game 2. Game 3's 11-3 Atlanta win had Rodriguez and Marcos Valverde's clutch hits driving the offense. Miami's Gil Aguilar and Dave Trujillo made sure to split the series with a 7-1 victory in Game 4. These Kings, struggling at 5-14, showed real signs of life against a Miami team now at 10-9. Don't write off Atlanta just yet – this series was a battle, and it's only April!

GAME 1 - Hurricanes Win, 4-0, Over Atlanta
Starting pitcher David Victorero was a major factor in the 4-0 Miami Hurricanes triumph over the Atlanta Kings. The winning pitcher was Victorero, now 2-0. He tossed 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 5. The win puts Miami at 9-7.

Isidoro Fortichiari, the 25-year old second baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Fortichiari contributed a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put Miami up, 2-0.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Fortichiari said.

GAME 2 - Hurricanes Tagged with 5-3 Loss
Luis Rosales led Atlanta to a win over Miami. The final score was 5-3. Rosales scored 2 times, while going 3 for 5. The second baseman also was credited with 1 run batted in. The Kings, with only their 4th win in 17 games, have not had much to write home about in 1981.

Atlanta designated hitter Mario Rodriguez contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the first. With two down, he hit a fastball into right field for a 2-run single. It was his 3rd hit of the season and put the Kings ahead, 2-0.

Rodriguez said his team "played with focus."

GAME 3 - Kings Deck Hurricanes, 11-3
Behind a solid performance from designated hitter Mario Rodriguez, the Atlanta Kings defeated the Miami Hurricanes, 11-3. Rodriguez was 2-3 with a double, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Kings. Mike Anderson, now 1-0, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on 2 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 2. The Kings, with just their 5th win so far in 1981, have yet to catch fire.

Atlanta took a 4-3 lead on Marcos Valverde's 4th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Valverde hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Miami pitcher Chris Stella shaking his head.

Rodriguez told a local reporter: "My job is to go out and play as hard as I can."

GAME 4 - Miami Gets 7-1 Win
Miami turned a good effort from starter Gil Aguilar into a win over the Atlanta Kings at Kings Field. The final score was 7-1. Aguilar got the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed 6 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. Aguilar allowed 1 run. Atlanta, now 5-14, continues its tough start.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Dave Trujillo? The Miami shortstop had a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Hurricanes on top, 3-1. For the game, Trujillo had 1 double and 2 singles in 4 at-bats.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Aguilar told the Miami Today.

Charlotte Colonels (13-6) @ Tampa Bay Storm (7-12)
Colonels Win Series 3-1
Charlotte continues dominance vs NBC East.

Here's my take: The Charlotte Colonels took down the Tampa Bay Storm 3-1 in a series that showcased their National Conference dominance. With key performances by Alex Gonzales and Dabir Aly, the Colonels marched to a sizzling 13-6 start. Tampa Bay's Nick Olesen snagged a win, but the Storm's 7-12 record leaves much to be desired. Charlotte's playing with confidence, and the rest of the conference should be on notice. The Colonels are marching!

GAME 1 - Charlotte Gets 6-4 Win
The Charlotte Colonels overcame a good performance by Tampa Bay first baseman Francisco Lizarraga to knock off Tampa Bay, 6-4, at Storm Stadium. Lizarraga was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Bill Mendoza picked up the save for Charlotte, his 2nd of the year. The Storm are now 6-10.

Alex Gonzales, the 26-year old second baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Gonzales contributed a 2-run single in the top of the fourth inning to put Charlotte up, 5-1.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Gonzales told the Charlotte Today.

GAME 2 - Olesen Finds Groove in 6-1 Triumph
The Tampa Bay Storm topped the Charlotte Colonels, 6-1, in National Baseball Conference action at Storm Stadium. The game was highlighted by the performance of Tampa Bay pitcher Nick Olesen. Tampa Bay goes to 7-10.

Olesen allowed 1 run over 9 innings. He also racked up 6 strikeouts.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said Olesen.

GAME 3 - Colonels Edge Past Storm, 4-3
The Charlotte Colonels downed the Tampa Bay Storm, 4-3. The hitting star was designated hitter Michael Dickens. Dickens was 2 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Colonels. Charlotte reliever Edwin Martinez picked up the win to move to 2-1. Luis Carrera suffered the loss. Charlotte is off to a hot start at 12-6.

Charlotte used the clutch hitting of David Reeder to capture the win. The catcher drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to give the Colonels the lead, 4-3. For the game, Reeder had 1 single and 1 double in 5 at-bats.

"Sometimes winning takes more than 27 outs," said Colonels manager Jason Wainwright.

GAME 4 - Charlotte Wins, 5-1
Charlotte and Tampa Bay got after it at Storm Stadium.

Dabir Aly pitched a gem to lead Charlotte to victory over the Tampa Bay Storm, 5-1. Edwin Martinez earned the save, his 5th.

Charlotte used the clutch hitting of Dustin Meredith to capture the win. The left fielder drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to give the Colonels the lead, 1-0. For the game, Meredith had 2 singles and 1 double in 4 at-bats.

"We've got a great group of guys," Meredith said, "and we're having fun right now."

The Storm, now 7-12, continue their poor start.

Detroit Dukes (12-7) @ Chicago Fire (10-9)
Fire Wins Series 3-1
Chicago cools off red-hot Dukes in four game series win.

Here's my take: The Chicago Fire came out blazing in a 3-1 series triumph over the Detroit Dukes, heating up the National Baseball Conference race. Game 1's 16-8 thrashing saw Sal Gamez and Mel Montelongo light up the scoreboard, while Edgar Gonzalez's pitching mastery in Game 2 continued to stoke the Fire's winning ways. Detroit's Armando Garcia fueled a Game 3 victory, but it was Chicago's Miguel Morales and Heriberto Jimenez who rekindled the Fire's charge in an 8-3 Game 4 win. With a 10-9 record, Chicago's on fire, and they're not cooling down anytime soon!

GAME 1 - With 16-8 Win, Fire Improve to 8-8
The Chicago Fire saddled the Detroit Dukes with a loss at Chicago Grounds. The final score was 16-8. Sal Gamez was 2 for 4, including 1 single and 1 home run. The Chicago first baseman scored 3 runs and drove in 2. The win gives Chicago a record of 8-8.

The Fire got an important contribution from designated hitter Mel Montelongo, who in the bottom of the fourth punched a full count changeup into right-center for a bases-clearing double. It was his 1st double of the season and put the Fire ahead, 13-0.

"It was a nice win for our side today," said Fire manager Matt Mead. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."

GAME 2 - Gonzalez Now 3-1 After Subduing Dukes
The Chicago Fire topped the Detroit Dukes, 2-1, in National Baseball Conference action at Chicago Grounds. The standout performance belonged to Chicago pitcher and Bothell, Washington, native Edgar Gonzalez. Oscar Roa closed it out for his 3rd save. Detroit falls to 11-6.

Gonzalez, the winner, is now 3-1. In 8 innings of work, he gave up 1 run on 4 hits, while collecting 9 Ks. He essentially shut down the Detroit offense.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Gonzalez told the Chicago Today.

GAME 3 - Dukes Down Fire, 13-9
The Detroit Dukes overcame a fine performance by Chicago center fielder Miguel Morales to defeat the Fire, 13-9, at Chicago Grounds. Morales was 4-5 with 3 doubles and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 times. The winner in relief was Jordan Allison. He is now 2-1. The right-hander allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 2.2 innings. The win has Detroit at 12-6.

Detroit relied on the hitting of Armando Garcia to pick up the win. The second baseman clubbed a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning to put the Dukes on top, 7-6. For the game, Garcia had 1 home run and 1 single in 2 at-bats.

"It's a satisfying feeling, to win like we did," said Garcia.

GAME 4 - Fire Roll to 8-3 Win Over Dukes
Chicago left-hander Heriberto Jimenez pitched his team to victory over the Detroit Dukes at Chicago Grounds. The final score was 8-3. The win gives Chicago a record of 10-9.

The Fire got an important contribution from center fielder Miguel Morales, who in the bottom of the third punched a full count cutter into right-center for a 3-run home run. It was his 4th home run of the season and put the Fire ahead, 5-0.

"Enjoyed this one," Jimenez told the Chicago Today. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Dallas Rustlers (12-7) @ Minneapolis Blizzard (8-11)
Blizzard Wins Series 3-1
Minneapolis secures four-game series win by battling streaking Dallas in Game 4 nail-biter.

Here's my take: The Minneapolis Blizzard stormed through the Dallas Rustlers in a thrilling 3-1 series win, creating a significant stir in the division. In Game 1, Tristan Davis's masterful pitching, along with Edwin Rivera's key 2-run home run, paved the way for a 2-1 win. Dallas rallied in Game 2 with an 8-7 victory, despite Ricky Thompson's remarkable 5-for-5 day for Minneapolis. Game 3 was a Blizzard showcase, as Jorge Ortiz's timely triple secured a 10-8 win. In a nail-biting Game 4, Lee Byron's clutch hitting guided Minneapolis to a 7-6 edge over Dallas. As the Blizzard look to climb the division rankings, this series win could be the spark they need, while the Rustlers will need to regroup and find their footing again in the division race.

GAME 1 - Rustlers Dealt 2-1 Loss by Minneapolis
In a low-scoring tilt between the Minneapolis Blizzard and the Dallas Rustlers, Tristan Davis was the difference-maker. The Minneapolis right-hander spearheaded the 2-1 win. Davis got the win, improving to 1-1. He allowed 8 hits and walked 2 over 8 innings. Davis allowed 1 run. Dallas falls to 11-5.

The Blizzard got a big at-bat from right fielder Edwin Rivera. For the game, Rivera went 1 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Minneapolis a 2-1 lead.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Rivera said.

GAME 2 - 5-for-5 Day for Thompson
Ricky Thompson found his groove in today's game versus the Dallas Rustlers and wrote his name in the league record book. His 5-for-5 performance at the plate unfortunately wasn't enough for the Minneapolis Blizzard, as the club lost the game, 8-7.

The 26-year-old second baseman told the press "it was one of those days where everything clicked."

"I made solid contact, and the ball dropped in," Thompson said.

Ricky Thompson hit an RBI double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

In the 1981 season Thompson is hitting .500 with no home runs.

GAME 3 - Blizzard Stun Rustlers, 10-8
The Dallas Rustlers got a superb performance from designated hitter Mike Frierson. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Minneapolis. The Blizzard won the game, 10-8. Frierson went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Reliever Chris Jenkins picked up the win. His record improves to 1-1. Jonathan Guzman took the loss. Minneapolis, now 7-11, is off to a slow start.

Had Jorge Ortiz not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Ortiz hit a run-scoring triple. That made the score 9-8, in favor of the Blizzard.

"Hustle and hard work is a big part of our success," said Ortiz. "Those qualities define our team."

GAME 4 - Blizzard Edge Rustlers, 7-6
In the 7-6 Minneapolis win over Dallas, the impact of Lee Byron was substantial. Byron went 3 for 4 with 3 singles. Arturo Garcia finished the game for Minneapolis and earned his 4th save. The win moves Minneapolis to a record of 8-11.

The game turned with one out in the bottom of the seventh when Byron hit a run-scoring single. It propelled the Blizzard into the lead, 6-5.

"Another day, another win. On to the next one," Byron told the Minneapolis Daily.

San Diego Seraphs (6-13) @ Los Angeles Cobras (12-7)
Cobras Split Series 2-2
Two division foes battle to a draw as San Diego shows their mettle.

Here's my take: In a dogfight out West, the Los Angeles Cobras and San Diego Seraphs battled to a 2-2 series split, each game a scuffle in its own right. Orlando Greeley's bat was a blazing beacon for the Cobras, but it was the Seraphs' grit, epitomized by Elijah Griffith's ninth-inning heroics, that stole the spotlight. Ramon Reyes's walk-off win in Game 4? Pure drama. This series wasn't just a game of baseball; it was a statement. The Cobras might've been the favorites, but never underestimate the bite of the underdog Seraphs. In the NBC West, no lead is safe, and no win is given.

GAME 1 - Seraphs Nip Cobras, 6-5
Los Angeles got a terrific game from third baseman Orlando Greeley. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to San Diego, 6-5. Greeley was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. The Seraphs, now 5-11, have not found much traction so far in 1981.

San Diego used the clutch hitting of Elijah Griffith to capture the win. The designated hitter drilled a run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Seraphs the lead, 6-5. For the game, Griffith had 2 singles and 1 double in 5 at-bats.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Griffith, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."

GAME 2 - Greeley Powers Cobras to 8-1 Win
Behind a fine performance from Orlando Greeley, the Los Angeles Cobras knocked off the San Diego Seraphs, 8-1. Greeley went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 for the Cobras. Enrique Laxton got credit for the win, improving to 3-1. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits in 7 innings. At 11-6, the Cobras have played well so far.

Los Angeles took a 3-1 lead on Greeley's 5th home run of the season. The solo home run, which he hit off Jose Segura in the bottom of the sixth, propelled Los Angeles to the win.

"Things went our way," said Greeley.

GAME 3 - Seraphs Win at Los Angeles, 6-3
Myles Byrd had a good game, but he could not keep the Los Angeles Cobras from falling, 6-3, to the San Diego Seraphs at Cobras Ballpark. The Los Angeles center fielder was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once in the loss. Robbie Kendall, the winner, goes to 3-1. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts over 9 innings. The loss has the Cobras at 11-7.

San Diego relied on the hitting of Leonardo Gonzalez to pick up the win. The right fielder clubbed a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Seraphs on top, 1-0. For the game, Gonzalez had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats.

"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," Gonzalez said.

GAME 4 - Los Angeles Gets Riveting Walk-Off Win
The Los Angeles Cobras picked up a win at Cobras Ballpark, taking down the San Diego Seraphs, 5-4. Starting pitcher Jerry Romero was a big reason why. For the Seraphs, the loss makes their record 6-13.

The game was decided with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Los Angeles trailing 4-3, Ramon Reyes hit a fastball from Victor Hernandez to right for a 2-run single. Just like that, the Cobras had a walk-off win.

"This game had its share of tense moments," Reyes said, postgame.

Phoenix Firebirds (8-11) @ San Francisco Warriors (11-8)
Warriors Split Series 2-2
Phoenix continues to underachieve as they settle for a series split.

Here's my take: The NBC West witnessed a thrilling series between the Phoenix Firebirds and the San Francisco Warriors, ending in a 2-2 draw that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Phoenix's catcher Sam Ashworth was a revelation, and Tony Calhoun's game-changing single in Game 1 set the tone. However, San Francisco's pitchers, especially Antonio Pineda and Ryan Harvey, who both pitched shutouts, kept the Warriors in the fight. Gary Schuckman's bat for Phoenix and Vinny Herrera's timely hitting made this series a perfect illustration of the division's fierce competitiveness. Don't sleep on either of these teams as the season heats up.

GAME 1 - Firebirds Topple Warriors, 12-5, as Ashworth Shines
The Phoenix Firebirds topped the San Francisco Warriors, 12-5, in National Baseball Conference action at San Francisco Grounds. The game was highlighted by the performance of Phoenix catcher Sam Ashworth. The win puts Phoenix at 7-9.

Phoenix used the timely hitting of Tony Calhoun to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Firebirds on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Ashworth, "one at-bat at a time."

GAME 2 - Phoenix Comes up Empty Against Pineda
Antonio Pineda blitzed the Phoenix Firebirds at San Francisco Grounds today, pitching the San Francisco Warriors to victory, 5-0. Pineda needed 9 innings to shut out the Firebirds, striking out 7.

"I knew he had it in him, but it's still nice to see him put it all together," said San Francisco manager Tyler Trowbridge.

Pineda surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in the outing.

GAME 3 - Phoenix Downs San Francisco, 8-4
Firebirds designated hitter Gary Schuckman put his stamp on his team's 8-4 win over the San Francisco Warriors. Schuckman went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for Phoenix in the contest. The defeat makes San Francisco 10-8.

Phoenix used the timely hitting of Vinny Herrera to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Firebirds on top, 6-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Herrera told a Phoenix Bulletin reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."

GAME 4 - Firebirds Shut Out by Harvey, 3-0
In a standout performance today at San Francisco Grounds, Warriors pitcher Ryan Harvey blanked the Phoenix Firebirds 3-0. He limited them to 3 hits and posted 2 strikeouts and 1 walk to gain the win for San Francisco.

Philadelphia Fury (9-10) @ Boston Patriots (9-10)
Patriots Split Series 2-2
Boston and Philly stumble to a draw.

Here's my take: In a gritty four-game showdown between the Philadelphia Fury and the Boston Patriots, both teams scrapped their way to a series split, each snagging two wins. It was a tale of two halves, with the Fury taking early control behind solid performances from pitchers Matt Adams and Roberto Hernandez. Third baseman Rich Pena and first baseman Roberto Marrero had key hits, proving once again that the Fury's offense can't be underestimated. But the Patriots didn't roll over, staging a comeback in the series. Danny Salas, Boston's third baseman, came alive with a 3-run home run, and shortstop Noah White went 3 for 4 in the final game, leading the Patriots to even the score. Both teams sit at 9-10, and this series was a microcosm of their season so far - flashes of brilliance, but still seeking consistency. The ABC East, watch out; these two are still finding their groove.

GAME 1 - Fury Win at Boston, 6-4
The Philadelphia Fury beat the Boston Patriots, 6-4. Philadelphia pitcher and Jacksonville, Florida, native Matt Adams led the way. Adams picked up the win for Philadelphia, going 8 innings. He gave up 4 runs on 11 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0. Philadelphia goes to 8-8.

Rich Pena, the 29-year old third baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Pena contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning to put Philadelphia up, 1-0.

"When this team comes together and plays the way we can, we can compete with anyone," said Adams. "I think we're going to keep proving that."

GAME 2 - Fury Beat Boston, 4-3
The Philadelphia Fury picked up a win at Patriots Fields, knocking off the Boston Patriots, 4-3. On the mound for Philadelphia was right-hander Roberto Hernandez, who played a pivotal role in the win. Philadelphia goes to 9-8.

Roberto Marrero, the 29-year old first baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Marrero contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put Philadelphia up, 4-3.

"Winning is all that really matters and we got it done today," Hernandez told the Philadelphia Times.

GAME 3 - Patriots Drop Fury, 7-4
Philadelphia got a terrific game from catcher Jose Cespedes. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Boston, 7-4. Cespedes was 2 for 2 with a home run and was hit 2 times, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Philadelphia falls to 9-9.

Danny Salas, who finished 4th in the ABC in wins above replacement with 6.1 in 1977, chipped in for Boston with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the third. For the game, the third baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 runs batted in.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Salas.

GAME 4 - Patriots Earn 9-5 Win Versus Philadelphia
Boston shortstop Noah White helped his team beat the Philadelphia Fury, 9-5. White went 3 for 4 for the Patriots. The Fury drop to 9-10 and continue their mediocre start to the 1981 season.

Boston grabbed control in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and runners on 1st and 2nd, Andrew Gilbert delivered a run-scoring single, to make it 5-4 in favor of the Patriots.

Gilbert told a Boston Herald reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.

New York Aces (11-8) @ Pittsburgh Express (8-11)
Express Splits Series 2-2
Pittsburgh manages to save face at home by securing series split in dramatic fashion.

Here's my take: The New York Aces and Pittsburgh Express clashed in a roller-coaster series, each side taking two games apiece. The Aces came out swinging, with catcher Tim Wheeldon smashing a grand slam home run and pitcher Noor Durrani hurling a complete game, scattering just nine hits. Robby Chacon's clutch double exemplified the Aces' ability to strike when it counts. But the Express weren't about to be derailed. Erick Velazquez, the 27th overall pick in the 1976 draft, proved his worth, going 2 for 4 with a home run and a triple in a decisive 5-1 victory. Luis Sanchez then played the hero in the final game, hitting a dramatic run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth to edge the Aces 5-4. For Pittsburgh, sitting at 8-11, this series was a declaration: they have the mettle to compete with the best in the ABC.

GAME 1 - Aces Deal Express 8-3 Loss
The New York Aces defeated the Pittsburgh Express, 8-3, at Express Stadium. New York catcher Tim Wheeldon had a superb performance. He was 1 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Pittsburgh falls to 6-10.

New York took a 7-2 lead on Wheeldon's 1st home run of the season. The grand slam home run, which he hit off Danny Davalos in the top of the seventh, propelled New York to the win.

"Our guys are never satisfied," said New York manager Dennis Salvino.

GAME 2 - Aces Upend Express, 4-1
The New York Aces beat the Pittsburgh Express, 4-1. New York pitcher and Westminster, Colorado, native Noor Durrani led the way. Durrani went 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 9 hits, walked 1, and struck out 8. His record improves to 1-1. The win puts New York at 11-6.

New York used a timely hit from Robby Chacon to get the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Aces ahead, 1-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact.

Chacon attributed the win to "a well-rounded effort by the whole team."

GAME 3 - Express Sink Aces, 5-1
Led by Erick Velazquez, the Pittsburgh Express defeated the New York Aces, 5-1. Velazquez went 2 for 4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3 for the Express. Alex Dunlap earned save number 2. The loss drops the Aces to 11-7.

The game turned with one out in the bottom of the fourth when Velazquez, the 27th overall pick in the 1976 draft, hit a run-scoring triple. It propelled the Express into the lead, 1-0.

Velazquez said his team "played with determination."

GAME 4 - Express Top New York, 5-4
The Pittsburgh Express saddled the New York Aces with a loss at Express Stadium. The final score was 5-4. Luis Sanchez was 4 for 5, including 3 singles and 1 home run. The Pittsburgh first baseman scored 1 run and drove in 2. Alex Dunlap collected save number 3. The victory makes Pittsburgh 8-11.

The game was all tied up in the bottom of the eighth, until Sanchez delivered big-time for Pittsburgh, stroking a dramatic run-scoring single off Matt Martinson. The game-changing hit put the Express on top, 5-4.

"We believe in ourselves and we're willing to work hard. It's a good combination," Sanchez told the Pittsburgh Today.

Nashville Blues (9-10) @ Cincinnati Cougars (9-10)
Cougars Win Series 3-1
Cincinnati handles hot hitting Nashville for series win.

Here's my take: The Cincinnati Cougars clawed their way to a series win over the Nashville Blues, taking three out of four games in an engaging battle. First baseman Esteban Martinez was the star of the show for Cincinnati, consistently delivering at the plate, including a 3 for 4 performance with a home run and a double in Game 1, and clutch hits throughout the series. Nashville's Gabe Escobedo's focus and intensity led to a 2-run triple in Game 2, but it wasn't enough to sustain the Blues' momentum. The inconsistency of the Blues, now sitting at 9-10, was exposed by a determined Cougars team that capitalized on opportunities. The highlight was Martinez's solo home run in Game 4, his 4th of the season, sealing a 6-1 victory. Cincinnati's triumph sends a message to the ABC: underestimate the Cougars at your peril.

GAME 1 - Cougars Sneak Past Blues, 5-4
Both teams had their chances, but the Cincinnati Cougars eventually prevailed.

The Cincinnati Cougars beat the Nashville Blues, 5-4, at Cougars Park. The Cougars got a fine performance from first baseman Esteban Martinez, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs. The loss has the Blues at 8-8.

Cincinnati took a 5-4 lead on Pablo Loureiro's 3rd double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Loureiro hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Nashville pitcher Arthur Blin visibly frustrated.

"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Nashville manager Francisco Hernandez.

GAME 2 - Blues Drop Cougars, 5-3
Cincinnati third baseman Joe Rogers had a good game, even if his team did not. The Cougars dropped a 5-3 decision to Nashville at Cougars Park. Rogers was 3-5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. The winning pitcher was Antonio Hernandez. He's now 3-1. He went 6.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits for the Blues. The win puts Nashville at 9-8.

Gabe Escobedo aided the Nashville cause with a 2-run triple in the top of the fifth. For the game, the shortstop was 2 for 4 with a triple, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once.

Escobedo attributed the win to his team's "focus and intensity."

GAME 3 - Cougars Best Blues, 7-2
The Cincinnati Cougars trumped the Nashville Blues, 7-2, at Cougars Park. Cincinnati first baseman Esteban Martinez was terrific. He was 2-4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 times and driving in 4. The loss puts Nashville at 9-9.

Martinez had a key at-bat for Cincinnati early in the game. With a runner on 1st, he hit a run-scoring triple. It was his 2nd triple of the season and gave Cincinnati an early 1-0 lead.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Martinez.

GAME 4 - Cougars Zip Past Blues, 6-1
Cincinnati Cougars starter Alex Perez pitched his team past the Nashville Blues, 6-1. The Blues drop to 9-10 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1981 season.

The Cougars got a big at-bat from first baseman Esteban Martinez. For the game, Martinez went 1 for 5 with a home run. In the bottom of the fourth, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 4th home run of the season gave Cincinnati a 1-0 lead.

"We had a nice day," said Cincinnati skipper Chris Allison.

Houston Mavericks (8-11) @ St. Louis Stallions (11-8)
Stallions Split Series 2-2
Pitching and timely hitting by both squads fails to produce a victor as St. Louis splits the series.

Here's my take: A series of stark contrasts unfolded between the Houston Mavericks and the St. Louis Stallions, as they split the four-game series. Game 1 saw Nate Higgins deliver a masterful performance for Houston, blanking the Stallions with a 4-hit shutout, only to be met by St. Louis' Isaiah Wilson's own shutout brilliance in a 13-0 thrashing of the Mavericks in Game 2. Houston's first baseman Elijah Glenn shone in Game 3, going 4 for 4, leading the Mavericks to a nail-biting 7-6 victory. However, the Stallions regrouped in Game 4, with left fielder Javier Gomez, known for his triples, hitting a crucial solo home run in a 6-2 win. The series left fans marveling at the unpredictable nature of baseball, with both teams showing flashes of excellence. It's a split that will leave both sides pondering what might have been.

GAME 1 - Mavericks, Higgins Blank St. Louis, 1-0
In a sharp 4-hit performance, Nate Higgins led the Houston Mavericks to a 1-0 shutout victory over the St. Louis Stallions, fanning 4 and walking 2.

"That's as good of stuff as I've seen in a long time," St. Louis manager Ryan Messmer said in a postgame interview.

GAME 2 - Stallions Show No Mercy in 13-0 Thrashing of Mavericks
Isaiah Wilson was sneaky fast, on the mark and hard to hit today. He led the St. Louis Stallions to victory 13-0, blanking the Houston Mavericks on 5 hits. He had 1 walk and 7 strikeouts.

"You know what he's going to throw. You know what to expect. And you still can't hit it," Houston skipper Carlos Sanchez told reporters after the shutout loss. "He just had a real deceptive fastball today and he was throwing it for strikes."
Name: Screenshot 2023-08-10 035714.png

Size: 45.8 KB

GAME 3 - Mavericks Prevail, 7-6, Over St. Louis
The Houston Mavericks beat the St. Louis Stallions by a score of 7-6. Houston first baseman Elijah Glenn deserved the lion's share of the credit. Glenn went 4 for 4 with 4 singles, a walk, and was hit by a pitch for the Mavericks. Earning his 2nd save of the year was Valentin Geffroy. The win puts Houston at 8-10.

In the top of the first, with the game still scoreless, Glenn hit a run-scoring single to put his team in the lead.

"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Houston manager Carlos Sanchez.

GAME 4 - Mavericks Go Down to Defeat, 6-2
St. Louis Stallions starter Willie Gomez pitched a strong game against the Houston Mavericks at Stallions Grounds, leading the Stallions to victory, 6-2. The Mavericks fall to 8-11 and continue their uninspiring start to the 1981 season.

Javier Gomez, who finished 3rd in the ABC in triples with 9 last year, contributed to the St. Louis win with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the left fielder had 3 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 2 runs scored, and 1 run batted in.

Gomez attributed the win to "everyone pulling their weight."

Portland Lumberjacks (6-13) @ Denver Rocketeers (11-8)
Rocketeers Win Series 3-1
Denver dominates struggling Jacks in four-game series win.

Here's my take: A clash between the struggling Portland Lumberjacks and the surging Denver Rocketeers produced a series filled with drama and a fair share of fireworks. Denver's Jesus Lago showcased his craft with an 8.1 inning, 2-run outing in an 8-2 Rocketeers victory in Game 1. Jonathan Stevens became the hero of the day with a walk-off grand slam in Game 4, following his decisive 2-run single in the opening match. But Portland wouldn't be silenced, taking Game 3 with a resounding 10-2 win, led by shortstop Lance Gregg's 4 for 5 performance. Yet, the series belonged to Denver, who grabbed a 3-1 win, leaving Portland to ponder their 6-13 start, while the Rocketeers celebrate their ascent. The thrilling walk-off wins leave fans in Denver exclaiming, "This wasn't good baseball; it was great baseball!"

GAME 1 - Rocketeers Roll to 8-2 Win Over Lumberjacks
Jesus Lago made an impact in the 8-2 Denver win over Portland. Lago, who is tied for 8th in the ABC with a .972 OPS, threw 8.1 innings allowing 2 runs. The Lumberjacks, now 5-11, continue their poor start.

Jonathan Stevens dealt the Lumberjacks a blow in the bottom of the third. Batting with runners on 2nd and 3rd and Denver leading 1-0, Stevens, who is tied for 6th in the ABC in triples with 1, hit a full count fastball for a 2-run single.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Stevens. "And not try to do too much."

GAME 2 - Lumberjacks Lose to Rocketeers in Walk Off
Denver starter John Wolfe had a strong outing against the Portland Lumberjacks at Rocketeers Field. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 2-1 win. The win gives Denver a record of 10-7.

Tony Bautista was the walk-off hero for Denver. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Rocketeers catcher hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home.

"There are no moral victories," said losing manager Tim Staheli.

GAME 3 - Lumberjacks Flatten Rocketeers, 10-2
The Portland Lumberjacks topped the Denver Rocketeers by a score of 10-2. Leading the way was shortstop Lance Gregg. Gregg went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles, while adding 4 RBI for the Lumberjacks. Fernando Borrego, the winning pitcher, improved to 1-3. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 7 hits and 1 run, while striking out 4 and walking 3. The Lumberjacks have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 6th win in 18 games.

Portland relied on the bat of Jeremy Campbell to get the win. The center fielder ripped a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Lumberjacks ahead, 2-0. For the game, Campbell had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.

"The fans pay the tickets and help us do what we do, so we like to put on a show for them," Campbell told the Portland Today.

GAME 4 - Rocketeers Sneak By Lumberjacks, 9-8
The Denver Rocketeers defeated the Portland Lumberjacks, 9-8. Doing his part was first baseman Jonathan Stevens, who went 2-5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 4. The winner was Al McHaney in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Frank Jahr took the loss. The Lumberjacks, at 6-13, have stumbled out of the gate.

The game came to a dramatic end. In the bottom of the ninth, with Denver trailing 8-5, Stevens hit a curveball from Frank Jahr for a grand slam home run, giving the Rocketeers the walk-off win.

"This wasn't a good win," said Stevens. "It was a great win."

Las Vegas Gamblers (14-5) @ Seattle Comets (9-10)
Gamblers Win Series 3-1
Las Vegas flexes as they demonstrate their early mastery of the ABC.

Here's my take: The dazzling Las Vegas Gamblers rolled the dice in Seattle and came up big, taking three out of four against the Comets. Game 1 saw Kyle Marks stifle the Seattle bats in a 7-1 victory, with Danny Herrera's bat shining bright. Seattle's right fielder David Olguin was the star of Game 2, leading the Comets to an 8-5 win, but that was the only bright spot in a series dominated by the Gamblers. Mario Smithson's 3-4 performance, including a home run and two doubles, propelled Las Vegas to a 10-2 drubbing in Game 3, and Bobby Rodriguez's 12-strikeout performance sealed a 5-1 win in Game 4. The Gamblers are playing like a team with their eyes on the prize, and as Rodriguez said, "There's more we hope to accomplish." The Comets, meanwhile, are left to regroup after falling to 9-10.

GAME 1 - Gamblers Deal Comets 7-1 Defeat
Las Vegas pitcher Kyle Marks did his part in helping his team beat the Seattle Comets, 7-1. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Las Vegas goes to 12-4.

Las Vegas relied on the hitting of Danny Herrera to pick up the win. The shortstop clubbed a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put the Gamblers on top, 2-1. For the game, Herrera had 1 home run and 2 singles in 4 at-bats.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Marks told the Las Vegas Observer.

GAME 2 - Olguin Powers Comets Offense
With right fielder David Olguin leading the charge, the Seattle Comets defeated the Las Vegas Gamblers, 8-5, at Seatlle Stadium. Olguin, who is tied for 10th in the ABC in hits with 21, was 4 for 5 with a home run, a triple, and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 3. Sergio Lopez closed the game out for Seattle, earning his 7th save. Las Vegas drops to 12-5.

Seattle took a 5-3 lead on Luis Otero's 4th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Otero hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Las Vegas pitcher Jaylen Taylor visibly frustrated.

"Nice win for us," said Olguin. "Now we'll go after the next one."

GAME 3 - Smithson, Gamblers Clobber Comets, 10-2
No one was more impactful than Mario Smithson in the 10-2 Las Vegas win over Seattle. Smithson, who is tied for 5th in the ABC in stolen bases with 4, went 3-4 with a home run, 2 doubles, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 and driving in 4. The loss makes Seattle 9-9.

With Las Vegas leading 4-1 in the top of the fourth, Smithson hit a fastball from Ricardo Sanchez for a 3-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Gamblers ahead, 7-1.

"I felt we were ready to go," said Las Vegas manager Matt Petrie. "Our pregame was pretty good."

GAME 4 - Rodriguez Lays Hammer Down in 5-1 Win
Las Vegas used a superb performance from starting pitcher Bobby Rodriguez to down the Seattle Comets, 5-1. The win brings the Gamblers to 14-5, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs.

Rodriguez, the winner, is now 4-0 after putting the clamps on the Seattle offense. In 8 innings of work, he gave up 1 run on 4 hits, while collecting 12 Ks.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Rodriguez. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
