We share something else in common and I cheated to start my 1970 taking control of the Yankees. Graig Nettles is still my favorite ball player of all time so I fudged a trade with the Indians by editing Jerry Kenney and editing him back after the trade. I didnt want to manage the Indians. Otherwise I play it straight up from there.

I've tried to deal for him, but they won't even listen to an offer. I was hoping Aurelio Rodriguez could develop a little more so that he may be a little more attractive, but no luck.

An 11-16 June in the books. Still can't score any runs, though I am getting on base more since I hired the new hitting coach. Sitting in last now, 20 games back with half the year to go. Zero optimism.

Rather than wait until the end of July, here is a recap of the month through the All-Star game. We are having our best month at 13-10 despite losing multiple players to injury. I have to adjust the amount of injuries in this sim. It's set as "normal" but this is out of hand. Far too many pitchers are getting major arm injuries. Seaver/Gibson/Sutton/Perry all before the all-star game.
Bumbry has a chance to be special. He's healthy now and hitting .300/.351/.462. I decided to make a big deal. Aurelio Rodriquez is a 24 year old 3b who has potential, but he can't seem to get his average over .230. Jim Wynn became available and I received him and 19 year old Terry Whitfield in return for the first A-Rod. Wynn's salary is double that of Rodriguez and Houston was trying to shed salary and I got an OF who has potential to be "solid" as a major leaguer. I am not sure I am spending to get to the middle, but Wynn was one of my favorites as a kid. And having fun is really the point of this. I called up my 21 year old 3B prospect from AAA who was hitting .352/.451/.514, Rudy Meoli. I also have a 2B I am curious about, but Dave Cash has turned things around and there is no reason to do anything with him. No All-Stars, and we don't deserve any. A possible exception is George Dixon who is 9-3 and 6th in ERA, but no harm done. We are 45-54, Bumbry would be an All-Star if was healthy all year, but that's how it is going. ....first game after the ASG saw us down 5-0 early but we rallied for 9 runs, the most we've scored all year. Bumbry hit a 3-run shot and Meoli added 2 hits. Maybe we can reach .500 with a good 2nd half.....but I can't see it.

Real life the Pirates traded Cash (and Willie Randolph) and kept Rennie Stennett. Who is playing 2B for the Pirates?

6 walks in 300 PA. Randolph was drafted 3rd by the Expos and is the #13 prospect. Jim Rice for Milwaukee is #1 and they also have #7 Gorman Thomas, who is a SS in this world

Ah, so you're not playing historical rookies.

I like seeing players with their real teams. Also in the draft, knowing the names, a human GM can pick up decent everyday players as late as round three.

I've tried that in both drafts, Dennis Lamp is not looking good at all but Randy Jones may be decent

Well yea, nothing is guaranteed with TCR. Also someone posted a belief that at game creation every player is coded for how close his career will be to real life. But despite those things I believe a human GM has an advantage in the draft.

We ended up 16-12 in June and followed that up with a 15-13 July as we climbed from last to 3rd, still over 20 games behind the Twins. The Twins are on their way to their 4th straight division title and are favorites to make it back-to-back World Series championships.
Having Rivers and Bumbry healthy for 2 months in a row and adding Wynn last month has helped us play much better. I am going to give Rudy May and Messersmith 1 more start and then shut them down for the year. They've been on the DL in the last 2 years and I don't want to lose them given how frequent pitchers get hurt in this world. The Twins are 8 games up on the A's, who you have to feel bad for as they would be in 1st place in the AL East. The Yankees hold a 1 1/2 game lead over the Sox and 3 1/2 over Baltimore in what should be an exciting final month. But they have nothing on the NL races. In the East, St Louis has a 1 game lead over the Mets and 3 1/2 over the Phillies. But it's the West where it gets crazy Astros Reds 1/2 Giants 2 1/2 Dodgers 3 Padres 5 There are a large group of teams with a similar record as ours and I really want a higher pick this year. There is a great group in this years draft and I need a power source as the DH is getting added next year. This year has Winfield/Guerrero/Jack Clark/Lynn/Eddie Murray/Yount and is pretty weak in pitching so I want to be in the top 7 and right now I would be 8th. Another reason to rest my 2 best pitchers.

One game left in the season:
Yankees Orioles - 1/2 (season over) Red Sox -1 Reds Giants -1 We are sitting all our best players to avoid long term injuries after both May and Rivers picked up short term knocks. So we losing a lot, I hope it doesn't cost me the job. Right now we'd be picking 4th, and I would happily take that. I want Eddie Murray badly. He's just 16 and I think I can get him to the majors in a short period of time. If I do get fired, the Giants have offered me their job. You can see they are a good team and they are the #1 system in the game. That would be an easy way to get a good team, but I won't take that job unless I get canned.

Red Sox won, Yankees lost and there is a 3-way tie for 1st.
1st game of the playoff, Roger Freed hit a pinch-hit 3 run home run with 2 outs in the 9th as the Orioles beat the Sox 6-5. The Orioles went 9-2 down the stretch as the Sox only went 5-6 as they had the lead with 4 games to go, but went out on a heartbreaker. 2nd game of the playoffs, Brooks Robinson broke a 2-2 tie with a bases loaded double in the 7th to lead the O's to the playoffs against the Twins as Baltimore went on to win 5-2. So it's O's-Twins and Cardinals-Reds. The Orioles continued their hot play in the playoffs as they had an easy time beating defending WS champs Minnesota 3 games to 1 as Boog Powell was series MVP St Louis had an equally easy time taking out the Reds in 4 games. Jim Northrup was the series MVP. It took 7 games, but the Orioles won 3 of 4 in St Louis including 6-4 win in game 7. Don Baylor won series MVP as he hit 3 triples in game 7 and over .400 in the Series. I got a contract extension, but he is "worried". I have improved our prospects from 21st to 13th and that's before our #4 pick.

Very happy to get Eddie Murray with the 4th pick. I am going to start him at A ball. If he progresses 1 level a year, he would start his career at 19 and given his potential, could have a great career. Picked up a non-historical catcher in the 2nd round and former A's pitchers Dave Heaverlo and Rick Langford in the 3rd and 7th respectively.
The top 10 were: 1)Expos-Fred Lynn 2)Brewers-Robin Yount!!! Yount, Jim Rice and Gorman Thomas are all 21 and younger. Nice future I could have had if I picked them over the Angels when I started the sim, those were my options 3)Cubs-Pedro Guerrero 4)Angels-Murray 5)Rangers-Jack Clark 6)Cleveland-Dave Winfield 7)Royals-Jonathan Astroth 8)Pirates-Mitchell Page 9)Padres-John Montefusco 10)Braves-Ellis Valentine ....one of these things is not like the others

Steve Garvey, who just put up a 3.9 WAR as a 23 year old, retired from baseball to donate a kidney to his cousin,
Everyone knows Garvey was a selfish dude IRL, so this is really funny to me, plus he wasn't on my team.

I experimented and changed the injury settings from "classic" to "high" in spring training and only 18 players in the league were put on the DL during spring training which is down from the previous year. So will give his a go and see if the amount of injuries level down some.
My owner is going super cheap and I am way over budget. I can't deal Fregosi because he is a 5-10 guy and has refused any trade talk. I think I will have to deal Wynn at the deadline unless I somehow am in the pennant chase. I dealt Messersmith for Jim Merritt who is cheaper and not injury-prone. I sent closer Tom Burgmeier for 1B Ron Fairly and I also dealt many of my AAA guys on the 40-man roster to save $$$. Here is my lineup going into 1973 once Wynn comes off the DL with a minor injury. Bumbry Fregosi Rivers Wynn Fairly Cash Cal Emery (DH) Rudy Meoli 3b 21 year old Francisco Marquez C 23 year old My bullpen is ranked in the top 5 and while my starting staff looks mediocre, they are all between 24-29 and can improve. The best news is my prospect ranking has gone from 3rd to last up to 7th after drafting Eddie Murray this year. He ripped up spring training, hitting .462, but I am staring him at A ball, he is only 17 and I have a 4 1/2 star prospect in AA who was my 1st rounder last year and a 3 1/2 in AAA. I am moving my AA prospect to LF to see if I can get him up to an average fielder by the time he gets to majors. I am predicted to go 67-95 scoring 60 runs less than any other team. Sooooo...that's not promising.
