The story after 20 games

So we sit 2nd in the Atlantic, 1 point behind the Panthers who are off to a hot start. We are also 2nd in the conference and 4th overall with out 13-3-4 record. We are still one of the lowest scoring teams (66 goals) but are the best defensive team (35 goals against).

Well I guess I read that wrong, we are 13th in goals for per game at 3.25 and 1st in goals against 1.60 by .50 goals per game. Our PP ranks 9th with a 25.3% and penalty killing is 3rd at 89.9%

Alex Formenton is leading the team in scoring with 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points in his 20 games. Pretty solid considering he plays the majority on the 4th line with Morgan Geekie.

Rest of the team
C. Brown 6-8 14pts
C. White 4-9 13 pts
N. Zaitsev 2-11 13 pts
T. Stutzle 6-6 12 pts
T. Chabot 3-9 12 pts
M. Geekie 5-6 11pts

Goaltending is outstanding

Gustavsson is 10-2-3 with a 1.47 gaa and a .948 spct
Sogaard is 3-0-1 with a 1.22 gaa and a .957 spct.

I am hoping that we can get some stars to start playing better.

Brady Tkachuk is off to a terrible offensive start with just 2 goals and 2 assists in 17 games.

Drake Batherson has been disappointing with 3 goals and 3 assists playing in all 20 games and all on the top line.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi has been a little better but we expected more from him. he has just 1 goal and 7 assists this season.

Around the NHL

In the Pacific, the Golden Knights lead the Oilers by just a point with 33 to their 32. The Oilers are 10 points up on the 3rd team, the Calgary Flames.

The Central sees the Dallas Stars on top with 30 points. Right behind them is the Colorado Avalanche with 28 points. The Blues are tied with them for 2nd/3rd.

The Metropolitan, The Flyers are the top team with an 11-8-1 record. 2 points over the .500 Columbus Blue Jackets.

Brayden Point is leading the league with 39 points, following right behind him is Edmonton's super star Connor McDavid and his 38 points. Stamkos is flying with 18 goals to lead the league 2 over Evander Kane.

Games 21- 30

Game 21 vs the Los Angeles Kings

Another strong showing by the Sens taking a 4-1 victory from the Kings. Batherson scored his 4th, Tkachuk his 3rd, Connor Brown with his 7th and Riley Smith his 3rd. Gustavsson with 20 saves.

Game 22 At home vs the Hurricanes

Carolina cooled us off a bit with their 3-2 win 40 seconds into overtime. Formenton and White both got their 5th goals after going down 2-0 but we couldn't get the next one and continued our rising amount of bad overtime and shootouts. Gustavsson played again this game and made 30 saves. Ollie Maatta twisted up his knee in the 3rd period and will miss a couple of weeks. Bernard-Docker will be called up to fill in.

Game 23 vs the Montreal Canadiens

Skating away with a 4-2 win over the Habs, Thomas Chabot collected 3 assists to help flex his offensive muscle. Artem Zub scored his 4th of the season to start off before Tyler Toffoli scored 2 to put us down 2-1. Brown scored his 8th to tie it and Drake Batherson scored the eventual winner with his 5th. Colin White added his 5th into an empty net. Chris Tierney was injured during the game. Should be a day or two.

Game 24 at home vs the Hawks

The Hawks are playing well lately and skated to a 4-2 win over the Senators. Batherson continued his goal scoring the last few games with his 6th of the season, Yegor Sokolov scored his 2nd. Gustavsson is showing some signs of being normal, making 21 saves tonight.

Game 25 at Chicago

The 2nd game of the back to back vs the Hawks was a 2-1 victory. Sogaard stole the game, making 37 saves and Tim Stutzle scored both goals, his 7th and 8th.

Game 26 at Colorado.

Big game vs the Avalanche tonight, a big test and we lost 3-1. Connor Brown scored his team leading 9th of the season and Gustavsson made 30 saves in the loss. Matt Murray has resumed skating and is coming back soon. This will create an issue on the back end for the club.

Game 27 vs the Florida Panthers

Big game vs the Cats and we win the game in a 4-3 win. Matt Murray played this game after coming off the IR. Hoping that teams will be interested or he plays better than what we have been having. Connor Brown scored his 10th and 11th of the season, Artem Zub his 5th and Viktor Mete got his 2nd in overtime to pick up the win. The win vs the Panthers vaulted us into a 1 point lead in the division over the Panthers.

Around the NHL...

Max Pacioretty signed a new 2 year deal with the Vegas Golden Knights that will pay him an annual salary of 6.11m per season.

Before the next game, we picked up Jean-Sebastien Dea (RW) and will dress and Shane Pinto is not ready to go tonight

Game 29 Vs Seattle

Gustavsson was back in goal for the Sens and we skated off with a 3-1 victory. Thomas Chabot opened the scoring with his 4th of the season, Reilly Smith scored his 4th as well and Tim Stutzle scored his 10th of the season. Gustavsson made 21 saves for the win

Game 30 at Nashville

Lost an ugly one to the Predators 5-2. Matt Murray didn't look very good in this one, allowing 4 goals on 23 shots. Not the best way to market a solid trade with him. Kotkeniemi scored just his 2nd of the season and Brady Tkachuk his 4th.

We did get some good news after the game, Morgan Geekie has been cleared to resume skating with the club. It'll still be a bit before he is ready to go but he is showing signs of coming back.

Matt Murray traded

Matt Murray was sent back to the Pittsburgh Penguins today for a 5th round pick in the '23 entry draft. Getting his salary off the books for a goalie that doesn't make saves is a big thing for the team with younger guys all looking for new contracts in the next few years.

Games 31 - 40

Game 31 at the St. Louis Blues

Not a good showing at all for the Senators. Colin White scored his 6th of the year and Thomas Chabot scored his 5th but a bit of a stinker. We only managed 23 shots against the Blues and Gustavsson only made 26 saves for the loss. Also in the loss, Drake Batherson and Josh Norris were hurt. Not sure for how long just yet, hopefully not too long.

Game 32 vs Minnesota

With the injuries, we had to make a call up and called up future star Ridly Grieg and he didn't disappoint. He scored his first 2 goals of the year and his career. Tkachuk got his 5th, Yamamoto got his 2nd and Formenton got his 6th. Gustavsson played this game and picked up 20 saves in the 5 to 0 shutout.

Game 33 at the Washington Capitals

Another stinker of a game without 2/3 of our top unit but a 5-2 loss. Connor Brown scored his 12th and his 13th. Sogaard gave up 5 goals on 35 shots.

Game 34 vs the Columbus Blue Jackets

We gave up 6 goals this season for the first time in our 6-3 loss at home. Tyson Barrie scored his 6th, Alex Formenton his 7th and Reilley Smith got his 5th. Josh Norris came back in this game but really did not play very well.

Game 35 vs Toronto

Another loss, this time to the hated Leafs. 2-1 loss tonight. Colin White scored his 7th, the only goal for us tonight. Sogaard made 28 saves but couldn't stop them all. We really need to kick start some offense

Game 36 vs the Buffalo Sabres

Another ugly game and we can't seem to get it together. Josh Norris scored the opening goal and his 6th of the season but things really went down after that.

Game 37 vs the Vegas Golden Knights

This is an ugly point of the season. Another loss, 3-0 vs the Knights. Batherson was back this game but ineffective. Bernard-Docker also came into this game and Maatta sat.

Game 38 at Winnipeg

Finally picked up another win after quite a few ugly losses. 2-0 over the Jets and Mads Sogaard got his 4th shutout. Brady Tkachuk scored his 6th and Colin White his 8th.

Game 39 at Washington

Morgan Geekie is back and reunited with Alex Formenton and Connor Brown. Hopefully that will kick start everything again.

A good game vs the Capitals. A big 4-2 win. Norris opened the scoring with his 7th, Thomas Chabot his 6th, Norris then got his 8th and scoring late into the empty net was Tyson Barrie with his 7th, a shorthanded goal. Sogaard played his 2nd in a row making 24 saves.

Game 40 at Edmonton

A 3-1 loss to the power house Edmonton Oilers. Morgan Geekie scored his first since missing 18 games with a wrist injury, his 6th of the season. Gustavsson saved 35 of 38 shots.

Game 41

Game 41 vs the Winnipeg Jets.

A thrilling 5-4 win over the Jets tonight. Colin White (9) opened the scoring Reilly Smith picked up his 6th in the 2nd period to get a 2 to 1 lead. Geekie picked up his 7th in the 3rd and Brady Tkachuk scored his 7th, shorthanded to tie the game late. Alex Formenton took a great pass from Geekie for the OT winner. Mads Sogaard played but wasn't as good as he has been making 29 saves.

The Senators at the half way point

So game 41 came and went and with that, the first half of the season is over. A very solid first half but we have started to come down to earth over the past few weeks.

In the Standings, we have dropped to 5th place but we are also 5th in the conference. Thankfully, the other teams in Metropolitan division are not the best so it's pretty much our division.

Games 42 to 50

Game 42 vs the Rangers

Rangers aren't having a great season but we hit them hard tonight. 3-1 win. Chabot scored the first 2 goals of the game (7,8) and Connor Brown scored his team leading 14th. Sogaard stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced for the win.

Game 43 at Vegas

The Golden Knights really pushed us in a back and forth game. They pulled out a 3-2 game in overtime so another point for the Sens. Norris opened the scoring with his 9th, Vegas came back with 2 quick ones in the 2nd period and Viktor Mete scored his 3rd to tie. Unfortunately, Maatta took a tripping penalty in overtime and Dadonov scored to end it. Gustavsson was back in goal, making 27 saves in the OT loss.

Game 44 at Vancouver

Another tough loss, 2-1 vs the Canucks. We outplayed them but couldn't beat Halak who was outstanding making 36 saves. Thomas Chabot scored the lone Sens goal, shorthanded and his 9th of the season. Gustavsson was average making just 22 saves.
