I know it’s an old thread but I was searching for information about rust and just came across this, I’m not a huge fan of the replies that basically amount to “the charm of the game is playing it exactly the way I want to and only the way I want to.”
No. The charm of the game is the customization. The charm of the game is that, by and large, anybody can play it however they want. You want to learn by playing? Cool! Maybe I want to use commissioner mode to give every one of my players 100 in every rating just to see what kind of stats they put up in a year, and the the great thing about the game is that it lets me do that.
Personally, I like to pretend that I’m a real life GM when I play the game. And that means having as much information as possible. If my star outfielder misses two months with an injury, you can bet your life that I’m going to have hours of discussions with my coaches about the best way to get him back into shape. They’re going to watch every swing he takes in BP and how he runs the bases and how he looks on the field during practice and they’re going to tell me exactly how rusty he looks, and we’re going to reevaluate it after every rehab game if we do decide to send him down. It’s no different than knowing how much a DtD injury is effecting a player or what percentage they’re at if they’re starting to get tired. Rust being invisible or hidden and left completely up to guess work, when every other single aspect of the game is available to us if we want it, is so silly and goes against everything the game is about.
