Doyle Being Looked At For Baltimore NL Team (Charleston News and Courier)

In what is somewhat surprising news, Charleston Rebels Manager Trevor Doyle is going to Baltimore today to interview for the Manager and GM position for Baltimore’s new National League ball club, which was announced last Thursday.

Doyle, only 33 years of age, would be the youngest manager and GM in MLB if he takes the position. Baltimore has interviewed about 10 candidates in the last few days. A decision on who will be chosen will be announced by the end of this week.

Doyle will miss tonight’s game against Columbus because of the interview. He has led the Rebels to a competitive 43-46 record this year, even with a 14 game losing streak in the middle of the season. Rumors about why he might be interviewed are because his Rebels team beat the AAA Orioles (a Cleveland Indians affiliate) in a preseason game here earlier this year.

The Rebels also beat the Philadelphia Athletics in a exhibition game in May.

Doyle Named GM and Manager in Baltimore (New York Daily News)

In what is a surprising move, the Baltimore National League ball club has named 33 year old Trevor Doyle to the dual role of General Manager and Manager of the ball club. Doyle has been a minor league manger for about a year and a half, starting his career in 1946 with the Tallahassee Pirates and continuing this year with the Charleston Rebels.

Doyle is a former football and baseball player at Ohio University, from East Liverpool, Ohio. He has a wife and 2 kids, Evelyn (10) and Adam (8). Doyle will manage two more games with the Charleston Rebels, finishing up this Saturday before he resigns from his post.

Many people are wondering why the new Baltimore team picked such a inexperienced person for this role. Rumors in the Baltimore search were that they went after several established big league executives, including Leo Durocher, but were turned down. They turned up on Doyle because of his exploits with his single A Charleston Rebels team this year.

The Rebels have endured a 14 game losing streak during the season, but have recovered to just 4 games under .500 at 44-48. Charleston has also beaten two higher level teams this season, the AAA Orioles in Charleston in April, and a surprising wire-to-wire win over the Athletics at Shibe Park in May.

The Baltimore club reportedly wants someone with a “fresh” perspective on the game.

Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Robins (No brewers), if I'm guessing the names.

Baltimore NL Team About To Reveal Name, Logo (Baltimore News-American)

The new Baltimore National League expansion ball club is about to release their new name and their logo. Almost all reports are that the Baltimore NL team will be named the Orioles, following the AAA team. The Oriole is Maryland’s state bird.

Season tickets will start to be sold on October 1, as the new team hopes to take advantage of the World Series and the fall.

Unfortunately, my dynasty got corrupt and I'll have to restart the 1946 and 1947 seasons. Don't worry, all the events that are still a part of this will be on the same dates. You'll just get new events during the 1946 and 1947 seasons.

Well then, Cards get another chance

More seriously, that's a shame though. Do you know why it happened? Anti-virus or something? Wouldn't want it to happen again!

Yup. Anti-virus and a computer cleanup. I've gotten a lot of the 1946 season completed already so I will post those recaps.

What an end to the season in the American League. The Yankees win 10 games in a row, but in the final game of the season against the Senators, the Red Sox come back with a 4 run 9th inning led by Sam Masi's single to give them the W! Standings and playoffs here.

The Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals made things easy in their League Championship Series, each winning the first game to advance to the World Series. So the Tigers advance to the World Series for the 2nd straight year.

What a start to the World Series. The Cardinals are shut out for 3 consecutive games, then St. Louis wins the next 3, 2 of them in Detroit. Harry Walker led the charge in Game 4 with a big hit in the 7th. Game 5, the Tigers had the winning run on 2nd in the 9th inning but couldn't cash in, losing 5-4. Game 6 was a dominant complete game performance by Schoolboy Rowe to tie the series at 3.

Game 7 of the World Series was bound to be an epic. The Tigers winning the first 3, the Cardinals the next 3. It would either be a collapse unsurpassed in World Series history or a repeat title for the Detroit Tigers.

This game would become one of the most exciting in World Series history. What an ending! The Detroit Tigers earn back to back World Series wins!

Doyle has gotten a new job with the Charlotte Hornets of the Tri-State League, at a higher level than the Tallahassee Pirates, but there is breaking news which might change things. Connie Mack is retiring as the Manager of the Philadelphia Athletics. He has been there for almost 50 years as the skipper there. The “Tall Tactician” has finally decided to give it up.

The A’s are looking at several candidates for the job, whether they be experienced or inexperienced, to be the replacement for Connie. Mack has been the guy for the Athletics since 1901. Mack said it was time for a change, so the A’s are.

Maybe if Connie Mack or some new owner wants to relocate the A's to the Pacific Time Zone of the USA, probably San Francisco or Los Angeles.

No plans for relocation at this point for this year. But I plan to keep the schedule I had before this.

Meanwhile, there is breaking news.

Trevor Doyle has been named GM and Manager of the Philadelphia Athletics. At just 33 years of age, he will be the youngest GM in the Majors. Not the youngest manager (Lou Boudreau is), but the youngest in charge of the front office. He hopes to bring championship baseball back to Philadelphia, or at least a team that gets close to winning more games than it loses.

Most people in the industry panned the hire, wanting them to hire someone more experienced, but when you haven't had a winning season since 1933 and have only won 70 games once in that time span, you'll try anything to win.

Award winners in the AL and NL...

1946 was the first year of a MLB draft with players picked for all 16 teams! The draft was held on December 15, and 103 rounds were involved in this year's draft. Joe Adcock was the first pick, by the Washington Senators. The question is, will he sign?

Only one team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, failed to sign their first round pick in the draft. Rip Repulski was not signed, and will go to college.

The draft has appeared to be a success. With the Hall of Fame voting results for the 1946-47 season, one guy has stood out above the rest. Goose Goslin, at 79.8%, was the only guy to be inducted. He was a former Washington Senator who had 2735 hits in his career as a left fielder.

The 1947 season has started for the Philadelphia Athletics! It has been a very interesting start to say the least in the first year without Connie Mack in over 40 years. The A’s started with a very tough assignment... The Yankees in Yankee Stadium.

@ Yankees (4/15-17):

4/15: NYY 9, PHA 1; W- Bevens (1-0), L- Fowler (0-1); HR: Keller (1), Etten (1): Attendance- 36,287
4/16: NYY 9, PHA 1; W- Haefner (1-0), L- Coleman (0-1); HR: DiMaggio (1), Henrich (1): A- 18,269
4/17: NYY 5, PHA 4 (10); W: Page (1-0), L- Savage (0-1), BS- Christopher (1); HR: Robinson (1), DiMaggio (2), Henrich 2 (3), A- 18,343

A very tough start for the A’s in Yankee Stadium. Two blowout games that were never a game and then a 10-inning nail biter where the A’s blew a 4-1 9th inning lead. The Yankees, who lost their opener, finished the series 3-1.

Red Sox (4/18-19):

As the A’s returned to Shibe Park, the largest crowd in Philly Opening Day history (32,423) showed up to see the new A’s. They were disappointed in these two games.

4/18: BOS 3 PHA 2; W: Harris (1-0), L: Newsom (0-1); HR: Doerr (2), A- 32,423
4/19: BOS 3 PHA 1; W: Parnell (1-0), L: Flores (0-1, injured in 3rd inning); A- 8,365

The Athletics started 0-5, only scoring 9 runs in the 5 games. It was an anemic offensive start for Philadelphia. Things were about to turn.

Yankees (DH, 4/20)

4/20 (Game 1): PHA 6, NYY 5; W- Christopher (1-0), L- Gettel (0-1); HR: Gordon (1), DiMaggio (4), A- 9,392
4/20 (Game 2): PHA 5, NYY 0; W- Lively (1-0), L- Haefner (1-1); A- 9,898

A great day for the A’s and their fans on a cold and windy afternoon in Philadelphia. A game winning 2B by Elmer Valo in the 9th to give the A’s a win in Game 1, and then followed up by a shutout in Game 2. What could have been a disastrous start for Philly instead turned into a decent weekend.

Senators (4/22-23)

4/22: PHA 11, WAS 4; W: Coleman (1-1), L: Pieretti (0-2), HR: Benson (1), Chapman (1), Rosar (1), Valo (2), Torgeson (1); A- 8,866
4/23: PHA 5, WAS 4; W: Newsom (1-1), L: Brunke (0-2), S: Christopher (1); A- 8,871

After a 0-5 start, suddenly with two big wins over Washington, the A’s were a game under .500 at 4-5 going on a long road trip.

The A’s are hitting the ball hard, with Elmer Valo at .394 and Pete Suder at .469 from the 8 hole. Buddy Lively has been a revelation from the mound, with two very solid outings against the Yankees and a 1.29 ERA.

The A’s will head to Boston for a 4 game series, Cleveland for 2, Detroit for 3, the White Sox for 3, the Browns for 2, and finish with Washington for 4 before coming back home May 13. A lot about the season will be told in this road trip, which will be followed by 19 games at home that will take us all the way to Memorial Day.
