1923 Season Review

…First month of the season saw great balance in AL, with three teams tied at 7-5 (Yankees, Athletics and Browns) and last team 2 games back; more differences in NL with a fast start by the Cubs (10-4) followed by Giants and Cardinals (9-5). Really bad start by the Reds, 3-11 after the first month of play. There is something strange in the air because Babe Ruth is not leading HR category. There were already 2 6 RBI games (Mickey Cochrane and Wally Pipp).
In May Babe begun crushing the ball, hitting 11 HR (13 in the season, passed 200 career HR) but Yankees are in third position. Leading the division after May was Philadelphia Athletics with 23-17, half-game ahead of Tigers and 2 and a half game on Yankees. In NL great month for the Giants, who gained the lead with 30-14 record* followed by Cardinals (29-16) and Cubs/Braves (23-19).
June saw the first hole created in both leagues. In AL Tigers got a 4 game lead on White Sox (40-28 record); under .500 Yankees and Red Sox. In NL Cardinals played a great baseball leading Giants by 6 at the end of June (48-24). There were also a one hitter (Pug Cavet, CHW) and a 11 innings complete game shutout (Lee Meadows, STL). Still no trades heading to July, but fireworks started early, with 9 trade completed before deadline.*Here are the most relevant:
1) Pittsburgh acquires star RP Dolf Luque from*Reds,*giving up 2 prospects
2) Cardinals reacquired Tink Riviere and another pitcher giving up 1922 World Series MVP Merwin Jacobson
3) Browns gave away*number 29 prospect Nat Hickey for help in starting rotation (Dutch Ruether)
In standings AL saw the rise of Philadelphia*Athletics, leading the division tied to Chicago White Sox with Tigers*0.5 games back; in NL*there were a Giants*comeback, now leading Cardinals by half-game with Braves only 1 game and a half-back.*Horsnsby*has a .403*BA*heading in august while Art Nehf with*two months to play has 18 wins. Earl S. Smith had the first 3 HR*game (3/4, 4 R,*7 RBI, 3 BB, 3 HR the complete line) of this*universe while Lefty Stewart (DET) had the first no-hitter against White Sox (no perfect game*due to*defensive*mistakes).
Heading to last month of regular season, in AL we have a very tight race, with 5 teams in 3 and a half game, 2 not too far and only the Red Sox out of the race. In NL it seems again an affair between Giants and Cardinals. There is also a shot at .400 BA from rookie Paul Waner (PHI) in NL, batting .410 at the start of september.
After a heartbreaking september, World Series were set up: in AL the pennant goes to Cleveland Indians, 2 games ahead of White Sox and 4 games ahead of Yankees and Browns; in NL after falling short for 2 years, the Giants made it beating Cardinals by 3 games.

1923 WORLD SERIES

GAME 1: with everyone expecting a pitchers' duel at Dunn Park, the game soon turned on into a slugfest. Despite 4 errors, Giants won 13-8 and went 1-0 in the series. Nor Johnson or Cooper made it after third inning; big praise to Young (OF, NYG) with 4 RBI and Burns (NYG) with 3 RBI (1 HR)

GAME 2: late inning magic for the Indians, series tied 1-1. Giants were up 5-2 heading into bottom of the 7th, when Indians scored 6 runs and went on to win 9-5 in the end. Brief and Kann were the batting leaders for the Indians, 3 HR in this game (2 by Giants, 1 by Indians)

GAME 3: after two great offensive displays, it's time for pitchers to show up and Nehf guided Giants to a 2-1 lead with a 3 hit, 1 r complete game. Great game also by Cleveland SP, Uhle, but Indians were punished by a sloppy defense despite 1B Brief continued crushing balls.

GAME 4: another great game by the starting pitcher, this time 24 year old Shea, Giants went up 3-1 in the series with a 9-3 win. Youngs and Jackson led the way for the home team, while Indians were playing really bad in every aspect of the game

GAME 5: after the Blockbuster trade, it had to be obvious that the decisive win for the Series was gained by Walter Johnson with a complete game. 6-4 the final score and the Giants won the World Series!

World series Champions: New York Giants (3-1)
MVP: Earl S. Smith (9/21, 1 HR, 5 RBI - .429/.435/.619)

1924 SEASON PREVIEW

Boston Red Sox: busy off-season in Boston, with many minor moves and various trades. The first one sent SP Sad Sam Jones to Boston Braves for three young players (intriguing prospect C Luke Sewell); the second one was made to replace Sad Sam: Speed Martin from Phillies, acquired for some no name player. With the Braves they made another trade later in the off-season, acquiring catcher Mickey O'Neill for RP Benn Karr

Boston Braves: they made not only trades with the Red Sox, but there were many other moves. They acquired LF Irish Meusel from Phillies giving away another SP, Jack Scott; another LF, Zack Wheat was acquired from Brooklyn for two Young players; RP Arnie Stone came in from Cincinnati in a trade involving mostly prospects and Ray Shalk, veteran catcher from White Sox, was acquired in Exchange of 3B, Tony Boeckel.

Brooklyn Robins: various moves, but the most significant one was the loss of Zack Wheat to Braves

Chicago White Sox: acquiring Tony Boeckel was a good move and the only major move made in the off-season

Chicago Cubs: no one was acquired, the only significant loss was SP Bill Piercy via Rule V draft to St. Louis Browns

Cincinnati Reds: not only they shipped RP Arnie Stone to Braves, but they also sent CF Edd Roush to Yankees for minor League players. Dont' forget they drafted Jimmie Foxx

Cleveland Indians: no major moves were made

Detroit Tigers: the only significant move was signing RP Percy Jones

New York Yankees: adding Edd Roush was a good move

More to come with the second part...

New York Giants: the Champions made only one move, adding veteran LF Ken Williams from St. Louis Browns sending to Missouri two Young players.

Philadelphia Athletics: many minor moves, nothing too big

Philadelphia Phillies: they filled to the roster acquiring 1B Jimmy Hudgens and 3B Howie Shanks from Senators in exchange of minor leaguers replacing players lost to Brooklyn and Boston as told above. They also used Rule V draft, acquiring 3B Bill Webb from St. Louis. Not to forget the second pick in rookie draft, which brought another real hall of famer

Pittsburgh Pirates: many minor moves

St. Louis Browns: the loss of Ken Williams hurt the team a bit, nothing more was done

St. Louis Cardinals: very quiet off-season with former Back to back Champions

Washington Senatos: as told, they acquired minor leaguers from Phillies

During Spring Training, Senatos lose Earle Combs for 2 months with a sprained ankle, but the big one hit the Yankees: Hoyt out all season with a damaged elbow and Shawkey out 4 months with a fractured elbow.

Preseason predictions: WS between Indians and Giants

Top prospect: Jimmie Foxx (Reds).

And here we go...1924 season

In April we had a fast start by the Giants, which close the month with a 3 game lead on the Reds and a 13-2 record. Cardinals the only other team at .500. Things were more levelled in AL, with 4 teams in half-game (White Sox, Yankees, Indians, Red Sox). Talking about stats, there was an incredible .508 BA by Judge (Senators) in AL, while in NL Waner continued his great 1923 season batting .468 after the first month. Leading in HR was a sophomore, have someone heard of Lou Gehrig? 4 HR in April for this Phillies guy. And there were also two great hitting streaks: Sisler 27 games and counting while Collins stopped at 26.
The first full month, May, saw the Giants mantaining their lead in NL, heading to June with a 32-12 record, 6 games ahead of Cardinals and 10 games on the Cubs. Despite their wonderful kids, Gehrig and Simmons (a cycle for Simmons in may), Phillies fell last in standings. In AL Yankees gained a 4 game lead on the champs (29-17 vs 25-21) with Browns and White Sox in the hunt. Both Judge and Waner saw their BA dropping under .400, but the real suprise was Babe Ruth not in HR lead --> Lazzeri (CHC) led the majors with 9, followed by Hornsby (STL), Dykes (PHA), Hauser (BOS), Meusel (NYY) and Hartnett (PHI) with 7. Eddie Collins Sr. took in May a 31 game streak, beating Sisler while on the mound we had Giants pitcher, Jesse Barnes, with a ERA under 2.00.
June seemed to be the deciding month for the NL: Giants dug a gigantic hole in the division, gaining a wonderful 15 and a half game lead on the Cubs (52-19 vs 36-34), leaving Cardinals on third place and rebounding Phillies fourth. AL was more equilibrated: Indians closed the month with a 1 game lead on the Yankees; third place for White Sox, fourth for Red Sox. Like Napoleon after the first jail period, Babe Ruth restored his reign closing June with a leading 15 HR, with Lazzeri and Hartnett tied at 10. Waner had a hot month, pushing his BA to .399. Jesse Barnes saw his ERA going over 2.00, but he had a 12 innings shutout this month against the Cardinals.

And here comes the deadline month! Fireworks started early, with some trades involving minor leaguers, but the first real move happened when Browns sent veteran catcher Hank Severeid to Phillies for two prospects. After that, Cubs acquired SP Dixie Leverett from Athletics (for prospects), and Ed Carey from Pirates (for prospects); Braves went dealing for a shortstop with White Sox and sent to Red Sox a veteran SP. Big trade in New York, with the Robins sending top closer Al Mamaux to Yankees for prospects. Senators were active with Athletics and Cubs for minor moves and there were another couple of moves, but nothing too relevant. On the field in NL Cardinals were trying to close the big gap with the Giants, but at the start of August they trailed by 13 and half-game; AL was wide open, with Indians leading Yankees by 3 game and a half. To note another falldown by Phillies: after rebounding in June, they close July in last position. Speaking about stats, in NL Waner closed july with a .397 BA, but the best player in baseball in the game was Rogers Hornsby (Babe Ruth is having a normally great season, not outstanding). To note, there were the Win number 350 per SP Walter Johnson (NYG)

August saw the Giants securing a second consecutive WS trip, with a 17 game lead on Cardinals at the start of september (86-40 vs 70-58) with Cubs and Reds tied at .500; in AL Indians carried on the last regular season month a 5 and a half game lead on Yankees and a 11 game lead on White Sox. Waner continued to stay near .400 BA while Hartnett (PHI) and Lazzeri (CHC) were in the hunt for HR crown with Babe Ruth (all tied at 25)

With everything decided, the Giants cruised through september in control, going 101-53 (first time a team won more than 100 games in this simulation) with a 19 game lead on Cardinals. A little more drama, but not much, in AL, with Indians securing a rematch with the Giants after not letting Yankees and White Sox close the gap created in August.

AL FINAL STANDINGS
1) Cleveland Indians 92-62
2) Chicago White Sox 84-70
3) New York Yankees 83-71
4) Boston Red Sox 78-76
5) Detroit Tigers 72-82
6) Washington Senators 71-83
7) St. Louis Browns 69-85
8) Philadelphia Athletics 67-87

NL FINAL STANDINGS
1) New York Giants 101-53
2) St. Louis Cardinals 82-72
3) Chicago Cubs 84-74
4) Cincinnati Reds 76-78
5) Philadelphia Phillies 72-82
6) Pittsburgh Pirates 70-84
7) Brooklyn Robins 68-86
8) Boston Braves 67-87

AL MAJOR STATS NOTES
Batting title goes to Goose Goslin (.374) while Babe Ruth closed the season with 29 HR (tied with 2 national leaguers). His teammate, Baker, won RBI stats and he was also outplayed in WAR by Simmons (8.7 WAR vs 8.5 WAR); Simmons led in SLG (.590), doubles (49), runs (134), total bases (350), stolen bases (35)*and hits (217). We have a new king in baseball?
Talking about pitching Pug Cavet (White Sox) was the leading ERA pitcher at the end of the season (2.87) with 24 wins (the only one with W > 20), 7 shutouts, 22 complete games and 126 strikeouts --> TRIPLE CROWN!

NL MAJOR STATS NOTES
Paul Waner (PHI) failed his shot at .400 BA, closing the season with a great .392. There were 2 HR Kings, Hartnett (PHI) and Lazzeri (CHC), both with 29, but the Phila player won the RBI stat with 145 vs 122. Hartnett was the best offensive player, but as the past years Hornsby (STL) was the best ball player in NL.
In pitching no one had a 20 win season, Leonard (PIT) closed the season with a 2.84 ERA and 29 complete games; strikeout leader was Clay Roe (CIN) with 161 (despite losing 18 games)

1924 WORLD SERIES

Game 1: Cleveland Indians at New York Giants

After last year defeat, Cleveland started strong with a 3 hitter by Wilbur Cooper and a 17 hit game. Final score was 10-0, with Charlie Jamieson and Bunny Brief*shining*ath th plate. There were also a*triple*by*Wilbur Cooper!

Game 2: Cleveland Indians at New York Giants

Thrilling game at Polo Grounds, with Giants leading*5-3 heading into 8th inning, when Cleveland closed the*gap*before tying the game in the 9th. In the bottom of the ninth here came the hero: Dave Bancroft hit a walk-off RBI single*for the 6-5 win and tying the series at 1. The W*goes to Nehf, who pitched a complete game; bad game for Cleveland SP, Coveleski (one of the best pitcher during RS).

Game 3:*New York Giants at Cleveland Indians

Game 3 is alwasy crucial for a series and this started badly for Indians. After*2 innings, SP Caldwell suffered a torn labrum -->*in a very important decision, player manager Tris Speaker decided to summon Coveleski on a short rest*after*the awful game 2. He was*right, because Coveleski silenced Giant's bats while Cleveland*offense did*the rest, scoring*5 runs between 3rd and*4th inning. Coveleski left in the Sixth, with game on ice...final score 6-1 Indians,*2-1 in the series.*Another good game by Jamieson, with 2/4, RBI, run and BB.

Game 4: New York Giants at Cleveland Indians

This was a close game, with a 2-2*tie into the 8th broken by an error by Frisch*which led to 2 runs for Indians --> 4-2 the final score, Indians up 3-1 in the series. Complete game for both pitchers (Uhle, who got the W and Barnes)

Game 5: New York Giants at Cleveland*Indians

With the first*World Series match*point, Indians started fast and never looked back.*5 runs in the*first 3 innings,*6 added in the 6th and the final score of 9-3*gave the World Series title to*the Tribe. Wonderful game by Riggs Stephenson (4/4,*3 RBI, BB, R) and another complete game by Wilbur Cooper.

1924 WS CHAMPS: Cleveland Indians
1924 WS MVP: Bunny*Bried (1B, CLE) --> 10/18, 6 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K***

After a very long pause, I can resume my simulation. We were at the eve of 1924 off-season, so let's start with awards

Rookie of the year
AL: Art Reinhart (NYY - SP)
NL: Max Bishop (2B - BOS Braves)

Manager of the year
AL: Tris Speaker (CLE)
NL: John J McGraw (NYG)

CY Young
AL: Pug Cavet (CHW)
NL: Dutch H Leonard (PIT)

MVP
AL: Al Simmons (PHA)
NL: Tony Lazzeri (CHC)

Looking at the stats, Babe Ruth and Hornsby deserved the 4th title in a row, but people decided to shake up things

Next post 1924 draft (Lefty Grove and Bill Dickey)

1925 SEASON PREVIEW

Boston Red Sox: a long list of minor moves, but none of interest

Boston Braves: they did an interesting trade, acquiring 1B Lu Blue from Tigers in exchange of 2B Hod Ford. Also to note the arrival of SP Jack Wisner and C Roy Spencer from Phillies for H. Fleming (C) and Johnny Cooney (SP)

Brooklyn Robins: a busy off-season for them, there 3 trades to note:
1) Acquired RP Hal Carlson from Pittsburgh for C Chris Kuel
2) Acquired 2B Hughie Critz and LF Fred Schulte from St. Louis Athletics in exchange of SP James Edwards
3) Acquired CF Robert Thompson from Cleveland for RP Ole Olsen

Chicago White Sox: many minor moves

Chicago Cubs: they acquired a veteran reliever, Phil Douglas, from Pittsburgh giving up two minor leaguers.

Cincinnati Reds: the only significant move was a trade built around RP Charlie Root, who came in town with 2B Otto Miller from New York Giants in exchange of CF Wid Matthews and minor leaguer.

Cleveland Indians: they added some veteran arms to the bullpen, but nothing great

Detroit Tigers: the only move was the trade with Brooklyn, which saw 2B Hod Ford coming to Detroit

New York Yankees: they tried to boost the rotation adding Roy Walker from Phillies in exchange of 2 minor leagues catchers

More to come with second part....

New York Giants: not only there was the trade with Reds (CF Wid Matthews to NY), but also a trade with veteran RP Rollie Naylor coming in town from Phillies. For him, two minor leaguers were sold

Philadelphia Athletics: only minor moves

Philadelphia Phillies: many trades were made to boost the minors. The only one we still did not write about was the depart of veteran SP Bob Couchman for a RF (Thomas Wood) and a 1B (Guy Froman).

Pittsbugh Pirates: a lot of paperwork in Pittsburgh. We already wrote about trade with Cubs, but we have to note other 2 trades:
1) Acquired C Val Picinich from Senators for SS Rabbit Maranville
2) Acquired 2B Sparky Adams from Browns for two minor leaguers

St. Louis Browns: they added SS Jimmy E. Cooney from Washington for a minor leaguer and C Ernie Vick and SP James Edwards from Brooklyn

St. Louis Cardinals: quiet off-season

Washington Senators: many moves, SS Rabbit Maranville and SP Bob Couchman the most important arrivals in towns

So we are set for another season. In Spring Training Cincinnati lost SP Pete Donohue for 3 months for an harmstring strain.
Talking about Top Prospects, Bill Dickey jumped to number 1. Pre-season power rankings told that Senators and Giants were the conference winners.

Next post...1925 here we go!
