2022 recap

The Blue Jays won the World Series in six games over the Diamondbacks, and went on to beat the Ohtanis in six games as well in the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series. Toronto was 97-65 in the regular season on the backs of great performances by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bryce Harper, who mysteriously signed a six-year deal for just $17M per season with the club. Blue Jays Ohtani was solid but unspectacular, with a 12-7 record and 3.94 ERA, and hit .276 with 21 home runs.

Mets Ohtani won the NL MVP, going 15-5 with a 2.92 ERA, and also hitting .288 with 22 home runs and 64 RBI. Brewers Ohtani and Nationals Ohtani actually got the remains first-place MVP votes. Twins Ohtani threw a no-hitter, and White Sox Ohtani hit for the cycle.

Dodgers Ohtani continued to toil away in Japan, and led the league with a .342 average. Giants Ohtani actually stayed in the majors for the whole season and was pretty good, with a .323 average, 15 home runs, and a 3.00 ERA.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Brewers Ohtani (.329/36/90, 15 SB)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Mets Ohtani (15-5, 2.92, 223 K)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: eh, Mets Ohtani I guess.

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Cubs Ohtani was pretty bad both on the mound (7-9, 4.54) and at the plate (.241/17/45)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Probably Giants Ohtani- he was used regularly as a starting pitcher, a first baseman, a right fielder, and a pinch hitter.

Nearly all of the Ohtanis have been signed to some kind of extension. The biggest has been Padres Ohtani, who just signed away his last year of arbitration for a six-year deal worth $185 million. The Ohtanis generally seem uninterested in reaching the open market.

2023 recap

The Mets won the World Series in five games against the Indians, but they were no match for the Ohtanis and were swept in the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series. That leaves the overall series standings at three for the Champions and three for the Ohtanis. Mets Ohtani was decidedly mediocre, with just 2.5 WAR total, but the team was led by a balanced rotation and had Clayton Kershaw on the mound.

Reds Ohtani won the NL MVP, with Giants Ohtani and Braves Ohtani finishing second and third. Reds Ohtani hit .336 with 35 home runs and 110 RBI, and was 13-2 with a 3.31 ERA on the mound; I believe this was probably the best Ohtani season yet. Royals Ohtani won the AL MVP, with a 14-4 record, 2.76 ERA, .303 average, 24 homers, and 78 RBI. Padres Ohtani won the NL Cy Young, going 20-8 with a 3.38 ERA and 217 K. A banner year for Ohtanis all around.

Yankees Ohtani, Cubs Ohtani and Rockies Ohtani all had three-homer games.

Cardinals Ohtani was inexplicably released at the beginning of the season by the Cardinals and went to play in Japan, with the Yomiuri Giants.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Reds Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Royals Ohtani (14-4, 2.76, 208 K)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Reds Ohtani

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Cardinals Ohtani

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Cardinals Ohtani, for being used as a secret agent to scout the Japanese leagues for St. Louis

2024 recap

The Blue Jays swept the Reds in the World Series, but they were no match for the Shohei Ohtanis, losing the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series in six games. The Ohtanis won the last two games in dramatic fashion. Toronto was 89-73 in the regular season en route to winning their second championship in three years, led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and (of all people against the Reds) Joey Votto after having moved on from Bryce Harper. Blue Jays Ohtani was a great contributor at the plate, hitting .305 with 32 home runs, but just mediocre on the mound.

There was plenty of news about the Ohtanis this season. You already know about the legendary double-Ohtani brawl. Giants Ohtani released a swing album. (Quote from the news article: "When not playing baseball in San Francisco, Giants Ohtani can usually be found singing in his swing band in his hometown of Iwate, Japan.") Pirates Ohtani and Orioles Ohtani both had three-homer games. Diamondbacks Ohtani was traded to the Braves, and the Reds signed Cubs Ohtani. Nationals Ohtani had a busy year, getting claimed off waivers by Milwaukee and then traded to the orioles.

Phillies Ohtani had a wild ride as well. He had been signed to a six-year, $105 million extension back in 2020, but after he suffered a relatively minor elbow injury, the Phillies inexplicably released him. Not to worry- he signed a $16.4 million contract after the season, followed immediately by six-year extension worth $114 million.

But Braves Ohtani had the strangest season. After finishing third in MVP voting just last season, the Braves inexplicably placed him on waivers in May. He was claimed by Miami, but a month later he was waived again. This time Washington picked him up, but 10 days later he was on the move again, this time to Milwaukee. He stayed there the rest of the season, but pitched miserably (2-7, 6.95 ERA). At the end of the year, the Brewers unloaded him to Texas for two prospects. One year, five uniforms.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Rockies Ohtani (.310/44/94)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Yankees Ohtani (12-5, 3.01)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Royals Ohtani (.285/28/64 and 11-13, 3.76 ERA)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Nationals Ohtani (.211/13/44 and 8-11, 4.72 ERA)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Braves Ohtani, for being tossed around the league like a hot potato.

2025 recap

Kansas City won the World Series over Arizona in five games and went on to win the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series in six games. The Royals won 100 games in the regular season and got a solid performance from Royals Ohtani (.263/26/75, 8-6, 3.81) and young outfielders Jake McCarthy and Sammy Siani.

Royals Ohtani had a three-homer game, and Braves Ohtani repeated the feat in the postseason. Reds Ohtani struck out 15 in a shutout. Orioles Ohtani signed the largest extension in Ohtani history, $213 million over seven years. The Twins have been collecting Ohtanis and currently have three- Twins Ohtani, Phillies Ohtani, and Reds Ohtani, whom they claimed off waivers.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year: Brewers Ohtani (.293/31/85)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year: Yankees Ohtani (15-8, 2.90)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Brewers Ohtani (.293/31/85, 13-8, 3.48)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Indians Ohtani (.183/1/7, 1-2, 5.22)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Cubs Ohtani; the Reds used him as a pinch-hitter 49 times.

2026 recap

The Baltimore Orioles won the World Series in a sweep over the Braves, and went on to beat the Shohei Ohtanis in five games. Baltimore had the services of two Ohtanis during the regular season, Orioles Ohtani and Nationals Ohtani, making their victory over the Ohtanis in the next round all the more impressive. Orioles Ohtani led the rotation with a 3.26 ERA, while Nationals Ohtani provided 15 home runs.

Royals Ohtani won the AL MVP with an 11-9 record, 2.84 ERA, and 23 home runs and 67 RBI. He also threw a no-hitter. Mariners Ohtani threw the first perfect game in Ohtani history.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Braves Ohtani (.302/26/74)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Royals Ohtani

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Royals Ohtani

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Blue Jays Ohtani (missed the season with shoulder inflammation)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Padres Ohtani started 33 games on the mound and 82 games at first base.

2027 recap

The Minnesota Twins won the World Series in seven games over the Padres, but fell in six games to the Shohei Ohtanis. The Twins had carried three Ohtanis during the season- Twins Ohtani, Reds Ohtani, and Phillies Ohtani- so it was hard to have to pass them over to the Ohtanis during the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series. In addition to their 60% Ohtani rotation, the Twins had an aging Bryce Harper, who hit .283 with 45 home runs and 119 RBI.

Braves Ohtani won the AL MVP for the Texas Rangers, hitting .328 with 35 homers and 96 RBI while also going 14-9 with a 3.73 ERA.

Royals Ohtani signed a five-year extension worth $185 million with Kansas City. He's one of five Ohtanis who have a $30 million or greater annual salary.

Indians Ohtani is not faring so well. He couldn't pull down a major league job this year and scuffled in both AA and AAA; he may be the first Ohtani to flame out of the league, which is amazing given that all 30 Ohtanis have managed to avoid career-ending injuries or severe ineffectiveness to this point.

There are currently three Ohtanis in ***; one of them, Astros Ohtani, won the Central League MVP there this season.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Braves Ohtani (.328/35/96)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Padres Ohtani (14-1, 2.60)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Braves Ohtani

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Indians Ohtani

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Tigers Ohtani. He may have been the first time a team used an Ohtani exclusively as a reliever, and he didn't disappoint, allowing just one run in 17 innings.

2028 recap

The Orioles defeated the Giants in seven games in the World Series, and then the Shohei Ohtanis in six games in the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series. It was Baltimore's second championship in three years. Nationals Ohtani contributed to the team at the plate (.275/16/40) but was pretty terrible on the mound (7-9, 5.57).

The Ohtanis have started to move up the career leaderboards and Brewers Ohtani hit his 300th career home run. There are now four Ohtanis playing in ***, and two in the minors with little chance of returning.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Brewers Ohtani (.296/34/86)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Royals Ohtani (12-3, 2.15)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Athletics Ohtani (14-10, 3.74, .274/16/41)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Cubs Ohtani (.236/4/18, 6-8, 6.34)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award:

2029 recap

The Mets defeated the Athletics in seven games in the World Series and went on to top the Shohei Ohtanis in the Shohei Ohtani Championship Series in six games. The Ohtanis are past their prime and starting to show some attrition so the series may not go on much longer. New York benefitted from an excellent (but Ohtani-less) rotation.

Not a lot of heroics from the MLB Ohtanis this year, but Rockies Ohtani, one of the most prolific hitting Ohtanis, threw a no-hitter in ***. The Ohtanis were finally hit by a couple of career-ending injuries after thus far avoiding severe injuries; both Twins Ohtani and Brewers Ohtani had to call it a career. Twins Ohtani had played his whole career in Minnesota. Including the two injuries, seven Ohtanis have now retired, and quite a few others appear to be on the verge of doing so at the age of 35.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Tigers Ohtani (.264/25/68)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Giants Ohtani (15-5, 3.60)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Giants Ohtani (.262/11/42 at the plate)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Reds Ohtani (.175, no homers in 61 at-bats. He retired. )

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Tigers Ohtani, who started 60 games in right field at age 35, and remained a weapon in the bullpen.

2030 recap

The Mets won their second straight championship and dispatched the Ohtanis in five games as well. At this point the Shohei Ohtanis team is made up of half Ohtanis and half ghost players, so the series is CANCELLED as of this season.

Astros Ohtani (playing in Japan) was seen volunteering at a local soup kitchen. Not much else to report about the actual performances of the Ohtanis.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Mariners Ohtani (.265/20/58)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Giants Ohtani (10-9, 3.45)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Giants Ohtani (.274/8/24)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Mets Ohtani (.209/5/19, 5-12, 7.66)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Giants Ohtani. He didn't play much, but was good when he was available.

The Seattle Mariners won their first-ever championship, defeating the Dodgers in seven games. Seattle won 94 games on the backs of a bunch of players no one has ever heard of because it is 13 years in the future. The Shohei Ohtani Championship Series was cancelled because there are just 13 active Ohtanis left at this point. The World Champions ended up winning eight series against the Shohei Ohtanis five.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Angels Ohtani (.271/35/99)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Athletics Ohtani (9-3, 3.28)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Angels Ohtani

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Giants Ohtani (4-2, 5.59 ERA)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Braves Ohtani. He batted only twice, but hit a home run.

The Angels swept the Reds in the World Series.

It was a banner year for Phillies Ohtani- see below. Astros Ohtani hit for the triple crown in Japan. Phillies Ohtani, Athletics Ohtani, and Angels Ohtani (The Original) are the only three Ohtanis who remain active in the major leagues.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Phillies Ohtani (.308/12/39)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Phillies Ohtani (14-7, 4.04)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Phillies Ohtani (obvs)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Royals Ohtani (9.97 ERA in 21 2/3 innings)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Angels Ohtani, who started 118 games in right field as a 38-year-old for the Pirates.

The Red Sox beat the Pirates in five games. Frigging Red Sox.

The Original Ohtani (Angels Ohtani) retired at the end of the season- he actually wasn't so bad this year.

Shohei Ohtani Hitter of the Year Award: Angels Ohtani (.230/20/59)

Shohei Ohtani Pitcher of the Year Award: Athletics Ohtani (2.91 ERA in 34 innings)

Most Valuable Ohtani Award: Athletics Ohtani (also hit .272 with 7 home runs)

Least Valuable Ohtani Award: Phillies Ohtani (.233/3/16, 5.80 ERA)

Most Innovative Use of an Ohtani Award: Angels Ohtani. Started 114 games in right field, and allowed just one run in nine innings on the mound.

The Diamondbacks won the World Series over the Blue Jays in seven games.

Astros Ohtani was the only Ohtani to play professional baseball this season- all the others have retired. At the age of 40, he made a remarkable comeback from Japan, where he had spent the previous seven seasons, and hit .282 with 25 home runs and 76 RBI. He was traded from Arizona to the Cubs at midseason, but he was given a World Series ring. He remains under contract for next season as well.

All the awards: Astros Ohtani

The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series in seven games over the Twins.

Astros Ohtani announced his retirement at the end of the season. He hit .287 with 24 home runs and 65 RBI at the age of 41. He won a Player of the Week Award in September.

EDIT: WAIT! I misread. Actually ROCKIES Ohtani announced his retirement. Astros Ohtani signed a three-year contract with the Mariners (of course).

All the awards: Astros Ohtani

The Cubs defeated the Astros in the World Series.

Astros Ohtani really announced his retirement this time. He hit .238 with 25 home runs and 72 RBI. He had a three-homer game in August.

From here, I'll sim out a couple of years and see which Ohtanis make the Hall of Fame and give out a few summary awards.
