I know it's always been 40 name sets, but why? Couldn't they upgrade it eventually?

So many other areas of this game have been improved so much over the years, but the namesets basically haven't been touched in forever, and its so frustrating. I'm not even asking the dev team to actually compile and include new namesets themselves--just add in 100 or so empty slots, and let the modders put the names together for countries like Israel, South Africa, Haiti, etc. Is adding extra language/ethnicity slots really that hard to code?

It's especially frustrating to have only one generic "Hispanic" set that's supposed to cover all of Latin America, despite many of those countries having very different names and racial makeups from one another. Seriously, why do we have unique namesets for baseball hotbeds (/s) like Azerbaijan, Albania, Norway, and Serbia, but only 1 set to attempt to cover all of Latin America? Y'know... the area of the world where roughly 1/3 of all major-leaguers come from?

the ethnicities are way off also: tons of white guys from the Caribbean for some reason. Just had a white guy named Oliver Lung be a scouting discovery from the DR. that's pretty ridiculous. Jamaica and Haiti are full of white guys for some reason also.

Name improvements would be a big upgrade to fictional universes.

Doing that right now! Languages and ethnicities will be saved in the world XML file. No limits on language sets!

Well, that's not exactly correct. OOTP added Questdog's name sets in version 16 - apart from adding thousands of new names, it dropped the American (Historical) name set in favor of American (African-American). But you're right about the 40-set limit: that hasn't changed since ... well, since ever, as far as I know.

I'm sure it has something to do with changing the code at this point. FHM has 100 name sets, so the developers knew enough not to limit themselves to just 40, but they were starting from scratch.

The problem there is that Hispanic countries like Venezuela and the DR don't have readily accessible data about names, so compiling accurate name sets for these countries is a challenge. And that's not unique to them - information on Canadian names, for instance, isn't easy to find either. The US, in contrast, has exhaustive census data that can be found with just a couple of mouse clicks.

This needs to be mentioned prominently in the Road to Releases - I'm sure there are people out there who will buy OOTP19 just for this feature.

this is actually incredible news!! Creating a complete name set is something I could easily do, but getting the actual name list would be difficult. Anyone want to go in on a mod?

That's true, and I remembered that, which is why I qualified the comment by saying they "basically" hadn't been touched. I've been playing this game off-an-on since OOTP 3, and pretty steadily since OOTP 12, and that one swapping of American namesets is the only change I'm aware of in all that time.

Anyway, Andreas' news about the update is great! I'm slightly worried, because I play fictional-historical and have separate American namesets for multiple eras (1800s-1909, 1910-1929, 1930-1949, etc), so I'm hoping this will still allow me to do that. But the thing about there being "no limits" sounds like it will, so: awesome!

This is WONDERFUL!

I just finished a fictional-historicalish name set last night and had to make some really tough choices about which ethnicities not to include. I'm going to wait for OOTP 19 now before I start the universe.

I'd like to chime in (belatedly) and bang the gratitude gong for this sorely needed and much appreciated improvement being added to OOTP 19. I've been requesting that the restriction on the number of name sets/ethnicities be removed outright or increased for years. I even briefly considered requesting it again this year after the game was announced, but it just seemed like such a lost cause. Then again, hasn't every requested feature/addition at one time or another? Outstanding!

The only thing I'm not clear about is are those extra sets gonna be included in the game already or we have to make our own and add them in?
