i like prospects, but it could be mlb'ers too -- i always have a running list of replacement candidates for various positions. an unexpected dip in ratings is definitely a time i review and expand that position's replacement list. a major dip and i am immediately trying to trade him before the stats portion of AI evaluation catches up with reality of the new ratings. |

As NoOne said, you need to look at more than Overall ratings; in fact, I actually never look at the overall ratings of a player. Base decisions on individual ratings (EYE/POW/MOV/etc)
As TGH said, turn off scouting. Scouting is artificially wrong and misleading at times. If you want more of a 'fog of war' and challenge when making decisions, put the ratings on 1-5. There will be huge range of internal ratings on the 1-250 scale. A '4' could be anything between 121-160 and a '5' anything from 161-250 (if you don't show ratings over the maximum)

I focus on trading for young, durable players who's potential has consistently risen. I sim a LOT, I might sometimes go through 30-60 seasons in a month. There is no better piece of advice I have than that one. Even with the smallest market in the league and the cheapest owner in the league, you'll make the playoffs 9 years out of 10 just trading for young, durable players who's potential has gone up. You're looking for players that were drafted out of high school in the later rounds and by age 20+ their potential has climbed above 60 and they've NEVER been injured (or if you have injury ratings turned on they're durable). As far as drafting goes? Drafting is a complete crap shoot, I just use my own drafted players to trade for the players I want. And the second a player's potential starts to drop? I drop them like a bad habit.

you can even look ahead and draft what the future trading partner needs. a little risk involved if they accumulate some players in the meantime, of course.
when in doubt in first few rounds i go with solid SP. if they really need something, and i'm confident i'll get the target, i'll draft what they need and the right prospect is available. match it to the AI gm's strategies to maximize return. |
