To get an idea of what a player wants who says "let me hear your offer" is to look at what other players with similar ratings and attributes to your player have recently signed for. That'll at least give you a ballpark region to start your negotiations with. Rarely do I ever have a problem signing a guy I really want when he tells me to "let me hear an offer."

however, something that I think should be fixed is when a player says "I'm through talking to you, I will play elsewhere", that should be it, he shouldn't listen to any more negotiations, period. I find that if I piss a player off, i can exit out of the screen, go back into it, and offer him what he was originally asking for (if he specified) and he will be willing to sign.

Of course I kid Andy... the Padres suck more than anyone.
hey, the Aces are close to taking their 2nd wild card in only their 3rd year of existence since coming into the NAHHBL as an expansion team. not too shabby, i'd say...

and yes, the Padres do suck.

Excellent, Andy, thank you so much. I'm fairly new to the business side of baseball, so this is invaluable - and I'm really looking forward to part 2!

Quick note:

In a converted league, I am having players show as arbitration eligible in their 2nd ML season. I believe this is a bug, but wanted to make folks aware of it.

must be something to do with the conversion process... not good for online leagues.... although i'm guessing contract status should be able to be edited, so it will just take a bit of busywork to get the contracts straightened out.

It is definitely a valuable post, but I wish you just would have emailed it privately to me. Now that the rest of my league owners have a chance to figure it out as well, I can't use this knowledge to my sole advantage. Thanks a lot!

this is information that every OOTP'er should know, it will still take the successful utilization of the information to win!

Part II will be geared more towards "solo" play but will contain helpful advice for any situation. I won't be giving away all of the secrets of the trade, however, as I have owners to compete and win against as well!!
