He must still have options because he went down today.

The A's gave him more of a chance than I would. I get it, he makes people swing and miss. It's obvious, he's talented.

It's also obvious that he wasn't ready. He leads the team in homers allowed as a reliever. That is not a fluke. It's because he has trouble with his control. Not only is he wild in a walks sense, he's wild within the strike-zone.

Sonny is pitching well enough to get traded. I mean, not elite by any means, but he does have his stuff back. If he had a reasonable defense behind him, he would be in the low 3s for era.

But he doesn't have a reasonable defense behind him. He has me with a glove, sitting in a lawn chair, with a beer in one hand. So maybe the market might not be there for a guy with a mid 4s era. But then again, maybe this is me just hoping.......

I was going to ask the question: "Does this mean we're trading Plouffe and/or Alonzo?" But right there in the article is says we're dumping Plouffe.

I'd say it's a good move, we should also trade Jed Lowrie and bring up Barreto.

I would think the A's are actively shopping Jed for that exact purpose over the next month. He's having a good year.

Plouffe is traded for a ham sandwich, which is more than I thought we'd get for him.

And Curt Young was fired, which I didn't see coming. I always thought that he was respected & liked in the clubhouse. I guess management wanted to shake things up or thought we'd get more from our pitchers. I just think the pitchers would look a lot better with better up the middle defense.

I didn't see this coming. Stephen Vogt was designated for assignment. I'm pretty sure they will be able to trade for him, although I'm not sure what they'll get for him. I liked him as a person and player, and I wish him the best.

At least the A's are keeping me on my toes. You can't criticize them for not trying new stuff.

Yeah, that one was out of left field (which is oddly the position Vogt played in his last game - maybe that was a clue!).

I'm surprised but at the same time not surprised. He wasn't producing and we're going to be seeing a lot of the Nashville guys in most starting spots by August.

Nice game for all the rookies! 3 players with their first career homer, Barreto in his first game. And as a bonus, Gosset gets his first career win! You have to say, this team might not be good this year, but they are far from boring.

They have a lot of talent, so they might be good in a year or two.....

The A's started selling off their players. First up, a couple of relievers go to the Nationals, which should help them shore up their pen.

Coming back though, is 2 low level prospects along with Treinen. Although Treinen started this year off as the Nat's closer, he wasn't given much of a chance. Not that I think he's closer material mind you, but that's the state of the Nat's pen before the trade.

I don't mind this trade as an A's fan, because I never got attached to madson, and Doolittle's stock won't get any higher that it is right now. He's decent, but he's been pitching out of his mind lately.

With Doolittle gone, the longest tenured A is none other than Sonny Gray. If Sonny is traded, (looking likely, but I'm holding out hope that he isn't) the longest tenured A will be.... um. Canha? Does that count because he's in the minors?

Oh maybe it's Phegley or Semien. Sheesh. You wonder why fans jump ship. There is no on field continuity at all.

As the Panda returns to S.F., Chris Carter returns to the A's. I mean, he's a no-risk player right? Right?

I think the only way he makes the big club is when/if Alonso gets traded. Even in that case, I'd want Healy at first and Carter off the bench.

In that same link, Montas is back with the club. Hopefully he worked out the kinks in the minors. The GM really likes this kid and had a longer leash than I would have given him earlier in the season. But he certainly has the talent.

What are the odds that Sonny pitches tonight? He's scheduled, but it's probably closer to 50/50 that he gets traded before game-time. I'm still hoping he stays with us through the rest of the season.

7th level Dola:

John Axford was playing so badly, he could not be traded. Instead, the A's DFAed him. He's only pitched in 5 games in July, giving up runs in 4 of them.

The A's really do feel as if they are rebuilding, focusing on young players. The thing we'll actually know is if in a few years they'll attempt to keep them.

A couple things happened over the weekend. 2 walkoff homers on Saturday and Sunday. The one on Saturday gave Bob Melvin 1K career victories. All that is good, but more importantly:

Bill King is now in Cooperstown. He's the voice I hear in my head when imagining a baseball moment. I think what's held him out of the HOF for so long is that he was so great of an announcer in Football & Basketball, people just forget that he announced the A's for 25 years. -And the great moments that have his voice attached.

Hatteberg's homer to push the A's winning streak to 20 was featured in Moneyball (the movie) and is probably his most famous. Here's a link that has his most famous calls, as they are hard to find on the internet. Take a listen to "Ramirez Robbed, 8-7-02", it's my personal favorite.
