I almost inevitably plagiarize from traditional minor league team names for places. My only burst of creativity in my league is the Columbus Doves, which in addition to also being a traditional team name (though not for Columbus), is a *redundant* team name.

(Hint: If you don't get it, look up "columbus" or "columba" in a Latin dictionary!)

Some of mine from my fictional league which has been around in one form or another for over 15 years...

Phoenix Rattlers
Boston Stormers
LA Thunderbirds
NY Burnouts (it seemed like a "cool" name when I started using it as kid. They had flames on their jerseys. In hindsight it is kind of a degrading team name!)
Atlanta Asteroids (probably got it from my addiction to the coin-op game around 1980!)
Philadelphia Wildcats (I think someone else in this thread had this exact team!)
Denver Summits
Dallas Outlaws
San Diego Surf Breakers
Miami Greyhounds
Houston Missions (as in NASA)
Reno Snake Eyes
Hartford Hitmen

I always tried to stay with names that ended in plural (as opposed to "Magic" or "Heat" for example). Of course back then, there were few, if any, major league sports team names that were singular. The Mutiny come to mind, if soccer can be called a major sport.

From the soon to be inaugurated AAO:

- Burlington Greens (Green Mountain Boys)
- Lowell Blue Sox
- Wheeling Stogies*
- Oak Ridge Atomics
- Rolla Rooks (as in crows)
- Muscle Shoals Loggerheads
- Winston-Salem Tobs (a paean to tobacco)
- Cairo Rivermen (or perhaps Egyptians or Pharaohs, given Cairo is in the 'Egypt' portion of So.Illinois)
- Schenectedy Mohawks (playing right on the Mohawk River of upstate NY)
- New Britain Whalers
- Muncie Iron Horses
- Lexington Thoroughs (thoroughbreds - they are in Kentucky, after all)
- Dover Pilots
- Charleston Cotton Kings (I dreamed this up thinking about former SC Senator Hammond, who proclaimed that "...Cotton is king!" so they play at Hammond Stadium...then I found out that there is a hockey team in TX with this name!)

* This name was suggested to me by an owner.

Some others from personal fictional leagues:

- Orleans Golden Knights
- Rheims Squires
- Kittyhawk Flyers
- Whitehorse Wild
- Sacramento Rush
- Richmond Grays
- Chancellorsville Fightin' Joes
- Tripoli Corsairs

Since I lived in New York City until recently, I started playing around with teams from the 5 borroughs of NYC. Here's my best shot at "unique" names - just for fun.

Manhattan Skyline
Brooklyn Arbors (Think "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn")
Bronx Cheer
Queens Ransom
Staten Island Fairies

Okay, so the Brooklyn one kind of sucks. Maybe they should be the Brooklyn Bridges instead. Oh well. I can't think of anything better for them.

And can you imagine how comfortable a player would have to be with himself to suit up as a Fairy!? Now I understand why a Free Agent will sometimes respond with "I don't like your organization!"
