Damn. Makes me think back to the Steve Olin/Tim Crews boating accident years ago. You hate to see guys that young go so soon, and Fernandez had the potential to be HOF-caliber.

I want to see the Miami position players taking the field with an empty mound the next game

Not sure if they'd be allowed, but yeah, name him as the starter, come out with an empty mound, then make a pitching change.

I feel a bit numb..

One might ask however, what does he do on a boat at 3:30 in the morning on a day he's supposed to pitch?

I thought I had read that his start had been pushed back to tomorrow since Adam Conley was being activated off the DL. If it hadn't been pushed back he may not have been out that late. His girlfriend is pregnant, too...

I was sleeping and as I hit snooze on my phone I see a notification with Don Mattingly crying and Jose Fernandez in it and I immediately shot up. This was terrible news to wake up to. It feels unreal. Obviously I never knew the man, but he was a joy to watch on and off the field. Even as a Pirates fan, he's always been a favorite pitcher of mine to watch. Can't bring myself to watch football today.

3 am is when they found the boat. They don't actually know yet when they crashed.

The Mets broadcasters said he was supposed to start today, and I only caught what little is available from MLB.com and Wikipedia (where the 3:30 thing is gone already now).

Ah, life is sad.

This is incredibly similar to Oscar Taveras' death. The two players are only a month apart in age, both had immense un-tapped potential, both are leaving a very young child, both died in the twilight of the season, both had unique jersey numbers(16, 18). The parallels are interesting.

Heart broken and gutted. He was fantastic pitcher who played the game the right way. I've made a point to watch a several of his starts on MLB.tv over the years. He potential to be one of the greats

Yeah...no words. Just jaw dropping. Great people like that go so tragically and yet the filth and scum in this world get to live another day.

As has been said, this is when the USCG found the boat while on routine patrol.
The boat was found on a shoal off Miami Beach. None of the three fatalities were wearing life jackets. I am just guessing, but they perhaps were boating at twilight or just after dark and hit the rocks at high speed and the boat flipped. It threw one of the people completely clear and the other two got trapped underneath the boat.
They most likely never saw the rocks.
