SEMIFINAL #1 -- Benny Leonard (1) vs Jem Driscoll (11)

Round-by-Round
Round 1: Leonard leaves himself open for a cross from Driscoll, but quickly recovers, countering with a jab. He then traps Driscoll in a neutral corner and fires a cross and an uppercut. Leonard’s round.
Round 2: After some clinching, Driscoll breaks free, doubling up on his jab with good effect. Leonard connects with a short hook to the ribs. Close round.
Round 3: Driscoll drills a combination and works his jab. Lenoard lands a right hook. Slight edge to Driscoll.
Round 4: Leonard nails Driscoll with a quick hook to the head. Leonard uses the jab to set up a cross. Driscoll responds with an uppercut. Leonard’s round, as he nails Driscoll with a left hook to the body right before the bell.
Round 5: Not much action, some clinching. Leonard gets off a couple of jabs. Some swelling around the left eye of Driscoll. Unofficial scorer has Leonard up by one (48-47).
Round 6: Driscoll fires a combination. Leonard connects with a hard shot off the top of the head. Driscoll doubles up on his jab and lands a cross. Driscoll’s round.
Round 7: Leonard begins to assert himself, using the jab to set up a straight right. Driscoll is on the defensive, as Leonard connects with a cross and then an uppercut, finally a straight right near the end of a huge round for Leonard.
Round 8: Driscoll takes a more aggressive approach. Leonard scores with a hook. Driscoll is warned for low blows. Leonard scores with an uppercut, Driscoll lands a cross. Slight edge to Leonard.
Round 9: Leonard flicks jab and assumes a defensive posture. Driscoll cannot penetrate, Leonard lands an uppercut to the jaw. The swelling around Driscoll’s eye worsens.
Round 10: Leonard rips a cross to the face of Driscoll. More strong defense from Leonard, who uses his jab to set up a hook. Loneard’s round, although the unofficial scorer has Driscoll ahead (96-95), the punches landed stats strongly favor Leonard.
Round 11: Leonard again puts defense first; he uses his jab effectively, keeping Driscoll at bay and setting up an uppercut. Edge to Leonard, plus Driscoll is now bleeding from a cut on his forehead.
Round 12: The cut is patched up, but Driscoll is telegraphing his punches. Leonard unleashes a flurry of blows, reopening the cut. Driscoll responds, but it is clearly Leonard’s round.
Round 13: The cut on Driscoll’s forehead is still oozing blood. Driscoll lands a straight right, but a strong shot from Leonard causes the cut to splurt blood. The ref steps in an orders an immediate halt.

The winner by TKO in round 13 via a cuts stoppage is Benny Leonard

Note: A peek at the scorecards after round 12 had Leonard ahead on two of the three, but one judge had Driscoll up by 115-114, a close bout.

SEMIFINAL #2 -- Roberto Duran (2) vs Joe Gans (5)

Round-by-Round
Round 1: Gans works to establish his jab. Duran counters with a straight right that staggers Gans. Duran follows up with a right hook. Duran’s round.
Round 2: Gans surprises Duran with a solid hook. Duran drops to the canvas, arising after taking a count of two. Gans is unable to follow up, as Duran covers up and manages to last the round.
Round 3: Both men elect to fight outside. Gans paws with his jab, setting up an uppercut. Trouble for Duran as Gans lands a solid combination right before the end of the round. Big round for Gans, and some noticeable swelling around the right eye of Duran.
Round 4: Duran moves inside and connects with a crippling hook to the head of Gans. Gans is able to recover and land a few shots of his own, making it essentially an even round.
Round 5: Both men try to work inside. Duran scores with an uppercut, as does Gans. Lots of action, slight edge to Gans. (Unofficial scorer has Gans up by three, 49-46, after the first five rounds).
Round 6: Duran fights his way off a neutral corner, firing an uppercut and then a strong combination. Gans responds with a hook to the body, and some clinching follows. Slight edge to Gans in terms of punches landed, and the swelling around Duran’s eye worsens.
Round 7: After a lull, Duran takes charge, nailing Gans with a big hook to the head. Gans covers up, lasting the round without further damage. Duran’s best round of the fight thus far.
Round 8: Both men are looking for a knockout. Gans connects with an uppercut, snapping Duran’s head back. Great round for “the Old Master,” who punishes Duran with blows to the head and body. Duran, in trouble, retreats and manages to survive, although his eye looks much worse from the punishment dished out by Gans.
Round 9: Duran lands an uppercut. Gans flicks the jab, following up with a right. Three-punch combo lands for Gans; Duran appears to tire, and Gans scores again with a right cross to the jaw.
Round 10: Gans unleashes a powerful right. Duran is noticeably slower, unable to slip punches, and his right eye is a mess. Another jab and then a short hook on the inside from Gans, and then it’s all over – the ref is calling the fight on account of the swollen condition of Duran’s right eye, which is practically closed.

The winner by TKO in round 10 via stoppage due to swelling is Joe Gans

Round-by-Round:

Round 1: Gans sticks a jab to the chest of Leonard, who responds by clinching. A cross from Leonard misses, and Gans lands a hook on the inside. Gans follows up with a short uppercut, and Leonard clinches again. Gans rips a hook to the body. Leonard struggles to find the range with his punches. Clearly, first round to Gans.

Round 2: Leonard connects with a cross to the head. Gans lands a glancing hook to the side of Leonard. Leonard is pinned against the ropes, but no punches are landed in the exchange. Back at ring center, Gans splits Leonard’s gloves with a piercing jab, but he can’t follow up. Leonard fires an uppercut that misses. Gans doubles up on a hook to the body, getting one solid blow in. Two quick jabs score for Leonard, who does better in this round, but still a slight edge to “the Old Master,” Joe Gans.

Round 3: Gans scores with an uppercut. Leonard retreats to a neutral corner. Gans misses with a hook. Lonard is short with a right cross. Leonard works his jab and is more effective with it in this round. A big left from Gans is sidestepped by Leonard. Better round from Benny Leonard.

Round 4: Both men elect to fight outside. The two men exchange jabs. Gans unleashes a hook to the body. Leonard connects with a cross. Gans bobs and weaves his way inside, where the two clinch. Gans connects with an uppercut, then follows up with a cross. Gans’ round.

Round 5: Good ring movement from both men, making themselves elusive targets. Gans sticks an uppercut to the chest, then follows with a cross. Leonard connects with a hard jab. Leonard lands a three-punch combination. Gans connects to the chest and neck of Leonard. The two engage in more clinching at ring center. Gans scores with a clean jab, then follows with a right cross. Solid round for Gans, who holds a 48-47 points lead on the unofficial scorer’s card at this point.

Round 6: Gans scores with a big hook from the outside. Leonard lands with a right hand. Gans scores with an uppercut. Leonard, trapped in his corner, fights his way off the ropes. Gans uses his jab effectively. Leonard is off target. Another round to Gans.

Round 7: Gans connects with a hard cross. Leonard is warned for holding and hitting. A big cross scores for Gans. Leonard fires a short hook to the ribs. Leonard wings a right. Another close round, slight edge to Gans.

Round 8: Gans scores with a hook to the head. Leonard lands a stinging jab. More clinching. Solid hook from Leonard. Gans fires and misses with an off-target combination. Leonard lands a glancing cross. Right cross to the forehead from Gans. The ref cautions Leonard again, this time for leaning on his opponent’s neck. Close round, but slight edge to Leonard this time.

Round 9: Leonard steps up the pace, deciding to become more aggressive. Gans lands a shot that is part uppercut and part hook. Leonard connects with a straight right and a follow-up cross. Then, he steps back and lands a huge cross that causes some swelling to appear around the right eye of Gans. Leonard traps Gans in a corner but cannot follow up. Although Gans escapes further punishment, there are visual signs of damage done in what is Leonard’s best round of the fight up to this point.

Round 10: Gans is wild with a hook. Leonard connects with a quick hook to the head. Gans, gasping for air, clinches. Gans misses with a jab, then Leonard connects with another big hook. Gans is in full retreat. Back at ring center, Leonard bangs home a hook to the body but cannot follow up. Gans doubles up on the jab. Another big round for Leonard. With five rounds remaining, the ringside observer has the bout even (95-all).

Round 11: Continuing as the aggressor, Leonard lands a right hook. Gans misses, then decides to tie up Leonard. After the break, Gans flicks a jab. Leonard fires and misses. After a lull, Leonard lands a crushing left that staggers Gans. A hook from Gans is blocked. Another good round for Leonard.

Round 12: After a bit of a breather, Leonard is unable to work his way inside. Leonard steps back and lands a big hook. Gans scores with an uppercut. Leonard shoots home a right. Gans is momentarily staggered, but he fires back with a jab. Leonard scores with a hook. Right cross from Gans. Leonard shoots home a jab, then follows with a hook. Another big round for Leonard.

Round 13: Gans pins Leonard in the corner, and he becomes more aggressive, landing a big hook. Leonard manages to wriggle free, but Gans works his jab. Leonard responds by landing an uppercut. Gans is wild with a hook. Leonard scores with an uppercut. Lead right from Leonard is followed up by an effective jab. Great round action, first half of the round saw Gans on top, but Leonard rallied with a strong second half, making it a difficult one for the judges to score.

Round 14: Gans misses with a cross. Leonard lands a two-punch combo. Gans lands a hard jab. Leonard counters with a right jab to the chest. Leonard doubles up on the jab and exhibits good ring movement. Leonard circles his man, scoring with a short hook to the midsection. Gans lands a cross. Leonard’s round.

Round 15: The two touch gloves, commencing the final round of the fight. Gans gets in a couple of quick jabs but then slows noticeably, perhaps low on stamina. Leonard, on the other hand, has plenty left, and he connects with an uppercut to the chin of Gans. The two exchange blows and then both move inside. Gans, weary, clinches. Leonard breaks free and fires a combination. Gans lands a half-hearted uppercut. More clinching from Gans, and then the final bell sounds.

After a long wait, the judges’ scorecards are tallied and read off by the ring announcer.

The result, Benny Leonard is the ATG Lightweight Champion by a Unanimous Decision (scores are 144-141, 143-142, 143-142).

Strong rally by Leonard in rounds eight through 10 and he sealed the win by taking the final two rounds (14th and 15th) on all three cards.
