Okay. Here's a little more research that, for me at least, complicates the question.
I created two 1901 historical games. First setup: clicked to have real minors appear, set for no amateur draft (rookies to appear as free agents). First day of the off-season, the MLB players (and only the MLB players, around 130 rookies) appeared as free agents. Second setup: clicked to have real minors appear, set for amateur draft. Draft pool (12/1) of 664 players. Players who would eventually appear in the MLB had "real stats." Those who would appear only in the minors were also generated, but without real stats. E.g., Ted Abrahams Minor Leagues Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com So far, this is what I expected to see (although it may be problematic for those who want to play through the majors with a draft but without all the extra players until minor league teams appear in 1919). Now, here's the confusing part: I also found a minor leaguer named John Morrisey, who appears in the game with a milb id, but without real stats. Checking bbref, however, there is no John Morrisey (one "s") listed at any level. Not sure where he comes from. |

I actually kind of wish that the discovery in my last post produced the opposite situation. That is, I wish that when draft is clicked, only the major leaguers would appear, but that, when "appear as free agents" is clicked, the minor leaguers would appear as well. That would allow us to create wholly unaffiliated minor leagues and assign or sign real minor leaguers from the first 20 years of the century. I don't understand nearly enough about how databases are created or accessed by the game, but this is all VERY interesting.
