Excellent idea. After all, they brought back the Hornets. And the Bobcat logos are nice.

When my MLB league expanded I also had one of the expansion cities in Vancouver. I named them the Wolves. I put them in the National League West.

You are aware that Charlotte is 100 miles from the ocean?

It is all about TV money.... really can not split the state up any more. New Orleans would be the closest place to put a team. The Blue Jays almost played there in 1994 due to Ontario labour laws. Then the work stoppage stopped.

Vancouver Mounties (old PCL team name)
Vancouver Bandits (I had an expansion team named this as a kid on the old All Star Baseball console games) Vancouver Lumberjacks Charlotte Hornets (Both basketball and the old minor league baseball team) Charlotte/Carolina Flyers (Wright Brothers) Charlotte Cherokees Charlotte Aviators (see Flyers entry) Nashville Sounds (I rather like the AAA team's name and color scheme) Nashville Volunteers/Vols Nashville Tigers (minor league name for a brief period) Memphis Blues Memphis Chicks Memphis Red Sox (old Negro League team) Jacksonville Tars (old minor league team) Jacksonville Jets (old minor league team) Jacksonville Red Caps (old Negro League team) Jacksonville Scouts (play on the old Jacksonville Braves minor league team name)

![]() Just think of all the tourists in Orlando that will go to a game. Men can now pitch a road trip to watch their favorite team play in Orlando by saying they want to take the family to Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, etc... and, oh hey, team x is playing in Orlando that week too.

I love to use old minor league names because of their heritage in the cities... but I will also list a few fictional names, too.
Vancouver Mounties... a team for a few years in the 40's and 50's in the old Pacific Coast League. Vancouver Redcoats (from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or Mounties red jacket) Nashville Vols (short for Volunteers) in Southern Association from 1901 to 1960. Nashville Cats (known as Music City, USA... from Lovin' Spoonful's 1960's hit song "Nashville Cats"... I once saw a logo of a cat playing a guitar with music notes all around on the Mod forum. You can hear the wonderful song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4p7prURvIk Charlotte Hornets... began playing pro ball as early as 1892, but really began in 1901... very successful Sally League franchise (short for South Atlantic League). Memphis Chicks (short for Chickasaws, an Indian tribe)... began play in the Southern Association in 1901 to 1960. Memphis Blues... city is famous for Beale Street and Blues music. Jacksonville Tars... minor league team begun in 1904... played in the Sally League or South Atlantic League for years and years... a Tar is a sailor, probably from the tar used to waterproof boats and ships. Jacksonville Commodores... big Naval base in city. Jacksonville Skippers... naval commander is known as "skipper". Jacksonville Blue Jackets or Bluejackets... sailors used to wear navy blue Peacoat...a short, double-breasted overcoat of coarse woolen cloth, formerly worn by sailors in America and Europe. Jacksonville Sun Sox... nickname just fit the area... sunshine and baseball. Jacksonville Jacks... a baseball term for a home runs... "he jacked it out of here". Jacksonville Crackerjacks... taken from the seventh-inning stretch classic "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" with the lyrics "buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks"... also "crackerjack" is a term for someone that is really good at doing something... as in "he's a crackerjack of a ballplayer"... or "a crackerjack of a mechanic". Definition: crackerjack noun 1. a person or thing that shows marked ability or excellence. Birmingham Barons... Southern Association franchise 1901-1960... team name first used in 1885. New Orleans Pelicans... Southern Association franchise 1901-1960... name first appeared in 1887... if Tom Benson, New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans owner, had gotten the Denver Zephyrs baseball franchise, the team would have been the Pelicans, because of its long history in the city, but he lost out to another bidder and would not sell them the Pelican name... Benson owned the rights to the name... the new owner just kept the Zephyrs' name and called the team the New Orleans Zephyrs... the new owner kept the name also because of the great rollercoaster ride... The Zephyr... at the wonderful amusement park in New Orleans called Pontchartrain Beach, which operated from 1928 to 1983... see photos below... it was a great place to swim, ride carnival rides, win teddy bears throwing baseballs at milk bottles, get ice cream, hot dogs, cotton candy...and watch a special event each night at 7 o'clock... circus acts, music acts... Elvis Presley was there in the 50s when he was just becoming famous... many famous singers and groups appeared on the beach stage... and for most of the years, there was no admission charge... it was free to get in... you had to pay for your food, games and rides... swimming was free... if you didn't like swimming in the lake... you could swim in the huge swimming pool, but I think you had to pay a small fee for the pool... great place... New Orleanians loved it. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-06-2015 at 10:53 PM. |

Vancouver Canadians. Use the traditional name for their minor league teams (for the last thirty or so years, anyway. Mounties, if you want to go old school)
Memphis Kings. For Elvis...and, if you're a wrestling fan, Jerry Lawler. ![]() Nashville Sounds. A fitting name. Even if they did steal the Evansville Triplets back in '85. Charlotte Spiders. For Charlotte's Web. Hey, why not? It's a good name, and since Cleveland doesn't seem to want it... Jacksonville Sharks. Never been used in big-league baseball, so why not? Birmingham Barons. Almost has to be Barons, unless you want to go with something like Bulls or Bulldogs. New Orleans Cajuns. That's what I tend to use. Pelicans also works, though. Memphis Pharaohs.
And New Orleans is not Cajun, it's Creole. HUGE difference. Lafayette is Cajun.
