September 1962
September 1962
Roman Mejias decided that fighting was more important than baseball so the league suspended him four games. I told him myself that if u ever do that again, you are going back to the minors and i mean single A. He was hitting the ball well this year, and unfortunately, that wasnt all he was hitting. 54-108 is my first season record. Well...i did beat 50 wins and i even managed a few games. I thought i would give Dykes a few games off during the season. i was 3-1 in September. Hmmmm....maybe i should manage a few more in 1963...ill shall consider it. I had the most stolen bases in baseball and even my bullpen improved...but lots of work to do in the offseason and i will have to see who is available in the draft. NYY and MIN will play in the ALDS and SF and CIN will play in the NLDS. Im using my playoff format from my http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...istorical.html. Check that out if you want to see what im talking about. The Tigers and Dodgers got byes. Well...lets see how i do in the offseason. But I did beat 50 wins and my Mets are up and running!! No where to go but UP!!!

1962 Offseason
1962 Offseason:
Well, the Minnesota Twins took the 1962 World Series by sweeping the Dodgers 4-0. The took out the Tigers in the ALCS and beat the Yankees in the ALDS. This report is for people who wanted to see who won it all that year. Oh yeah...my score...uhhh...did ANYONE think i would do better than that? Even i didnt. So i will take the 1 out of 100 and throw it in the trash can. Joan Payson, my owner said, "Dont worry about it, hun. There's always next year." I sometimes wonder...good thing i cant get fired.

1963 Preseason
1963 Preseason:
The draft really wasnt very deep in 1963. I drafted Stargell becasue i know he would put some pop in my bats plus i need another good outfielder. Although i know i needed pitching, the pitchers that year really didnt do it for me. I did take Tommie Sisk and he signed but Chris Zachary went back to HS. I got the rest of the players though. So, bad for me, my pitching in the offseason really didnt improve. Pete Rose was taken by the Colt.45s. I could have had him, but it was outfield that really needed as far as batters, not infield. Picked dead last in the 1963 preseason predictions...i kinda figured that...but the Colt.45s...just in their second year...are predicted to have a winning record and they have a chance to make the NLDS! Ill be watching them. So...my lineup is i think above average, but my pitching still reeks!! So without further ado...everyone... PLEASE MEET THE 1963 NEW YORK METS!!!

April 1963
Twib:
I took over as manager for opening day 1963 to see what Willie Stargell might do in his first game. His first major league hit was a triple AND he belted a dinger as we beat the Cardinals 5-4 in the game. He was player of the game for obvious reasons...good way to start off what i hope will be a HOF career. Jim Owens and Ron Kline, two decent pitchers were on the waiver wire so i picked them up. High ratings might help my pitching i hope.

A couple of other games i managed in the month of April. Good pitching by Gaylord Perry and Ryne Duren sealed a good game against the Reds. Then I wanted to see Tommie Sisk pitch against the Cubs, who my AAA manager said he was ready for the majors. Nice to see he was right!

More Twib:
1st in the NL in stolen bases again, 4th in the NL in HR, and the bullpen pretty much in the middle. Starting off 8-12 for the year IMO is not too shabby for this kind of young team. Stargell is my leader in RBI and Crandall is hitting well. The rotation would be very respectable if it wasnt for Owens. I sometimes wonder how my manager thinks that Owens should be a starter and not a reliever. But im banking on him to see what he can do for the rest of the year. Julio Navarro is off to a MUCH better start this year than he did last year. I guess being in the bullpen does help.

May-1963
Twib-May1963:
You hope when you go into the next month of the season that maybe you might just have a good month...unless you are the 1963 Mets. Another tough 31 days as i fell in the standings again to dead last. I can see why not many people want to manage this team, but me, being a Mets fan, i will plow through the storm. Although, right now, the storm is a hurricane. My bullpen gave up a few games this month when we had the lead and my starting pitching, well..maybe i should send the ENTIRE rotation back to the minors. A positive note to the month however, my man Willie Stargell named NL ROTM. I knew i had something special when i got him. I asked him about the award and all he could say was thank you to his teammates. Now i know why everyone gets along with the kid.

June 1963
Twib:
A 12-17 month of June made me feel pretty good about our chances of becoming a better team. Stargell continued to hit well. So did Richardson and Wills. Boy is Wills a thief. I made a few trades during the month, mostly to get rid of a few malcontents. I traded away Thomas for Sadowski to help bolster my rotation a little. You can never have too much pitching IMO. I also traded Mejias for Piersall...needed an extra outfielder. And i also sent Zimmer to LAD for Earl Averill. He was listed as a C but i put him in RF. My lineup is doing pretty good at the halfway mark. 3rd in AVG in the NL is very respectable as well as 4th in OBP, which means my men are getting on base. Now, if only i could keep the OTHER teams from getting on base too. Dead last in Starter ERA and the bullpen continues to be very inconsistent. I lost Roy Face and Don McMahon pretty much for the rest of the 1963 season. I think they will be ready for 1964.

July 1963
Okay, here is how the month of July went. Well, see for yourself:
9-4 to start the month, then Jim Gilliam went on the 15-DL, then no more wins after that and i'm still in the middle of a 14 game losing streak! Jim will be back in a couple of days, but any chance to have a decent month went out the window. However, there were some positives in July as you can see below in the next reply.

Gaylord Perry, Willie Stargell and Bobby Richardson were the first Mets to ever make the all-star game. I didn't have any all-stars in 1962. Richardson wound up a starter for the team and he went 2 for 4 in the game. Please Meet the first ever New York Mets all-stars!!!

August 1963
08/63:
A .500 month! Went 14-14...pretty good for my Mets after losing 14 straight games in July. The team is doing a little better as we prepare to close out the season. 3rd in the NL in AVG and 3rd in bullpen ERA! So my relievers are doing a splendid job. Too bad, the STARTERS can't cut the mustard. 2nd in the NL in stolen bases, so my baserunners are a bunch of Robin Hoods. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor...namely ME! Willie Stargell is some kid! NL ROTM and BOTM!!! I think he has a great chance to get ROTY! However, that translates to money usually, and I know he is going to want a very high paycheck come money time. He's worth it I think. Gonna do my best to keep him. Anyway, roster expansion has occurred and i brought all my 40-man roster up to the majors to see what they can do in the last month. 60 wins is a possibility and that does mean improvement!

Great selection with Stargell - he is turning out to be one heck of a player for you. Great dynasty thread, I am really enjoying following along. Go Mets!

thank you sir...I could have chosen pete rose because he was available for the first pick in the draft...but when i saw "Pops" Stargell, as he came to be known later in his career, i just knew i had to have him..i did need pitching real bad, but i couldnt pass on Willie.

9-63
11 Wins!! That was the amount of positive wins from the year before. 65-97 and 9th place in the NL. My team definately showed signs of improvement and Joan Payson, my owner, was satisfied with the numbers...or at least i think she was. Anyway, im looking forward to the off season and to the draft to see who would like to be a member of the awesome Mets. Stargell i was very happy with as well as Wills, Perry, Gilliam and Crandall. Two of my pitchers in the bullpen, Ryne Duren and Don McMahon, who my manager slated to be long relievers, had ERAs under 2 and that made me very happy...but they both want to be closers next year...ill told them ill talk to Dykes and see what he says. IMO the 1963 season was a good improvement over 1962. Well..on to the Offseason....
